Page One, produced and hosted by author Holly Lynn Payne, celebrates the craft that goes into writing the first sentence, first paragraph and first page of your favorite books. The first page is often the most rewritten page of any book because it has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. We interview master storytellers on the struggles and stories behind the first page of their books.About the guest author:MATT SEDILLO, the first poet on the Page One Podcast, is being hailed by historians and journalists as the "best political poet in America." He has written two collections of poetry, CITY ON THE SECOND FLOOR and MOWING LEAVES OF GRASS, which are currently being taught in several California colleges. Matt Sedillo has also been described as "the poet laureate of the struggle" by academics, poets, and journalists. He has appeared on CSPAN and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times and other publications, in addition to traveling the world to speak at major conferences, forums, and universities including Cambridge. Our love of travel and food converge in spectacular fashion in this exploration of Mexico and its many regional cuisines with chef and TV host Pati Jinich. Matt Sedillo takes on the Western canon, discussing how many of the literary giants, such as Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg, disparaged Mexico/Mexicans. In his poems, Matt reclaims Chicanx/Latinx/Indigenous literary traditions and histories. Matt Sedillo has been described by critics as the "best political poet in America" as well as "the poet laureate of the struggle." Sedillo was the recipient of the 2017 Joe Hill Labor Poetry award, a panelist at the 2020 Texas book festival, and a participant in the 2011 San Francisco International Poetry Festival and the 2022 Elba Poetry Festival. Sedillo has appeared on CSPAN and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Axios, and the Associated Press among other publications. Sedillo has spoken at Casa de las Americas in Havana, Cuba, at numerous conferences and forums, such as the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, the National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in American Higher Education, the National Association of Chicana/Chicano Studies, the Left Forum, the US Social Forum, and at over a hundred universities and colleges, including the University of Cambridge, among many others. Zarela Martinez is an acclaimed restaurateur and cookbook author in New York City. Her books include Food from My Heart, The Food and Life of Oaxaca, and Zarela's Veracruz, the companion to her PBS series "Zarela!! La Cocina Veracruzana." Gustavo Morales-Cirión of the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington D.C. walks contributor Ben Jackson through its exhibit "Constructing Mexico68," which looks at the venues and sculptures (and Raquel Welch videos) of these Games. The exhibit is open until August 15, so if you're in the DC area, check it out (note: it's a pretty small exhibit). Speaker Biography: The host of PBS's popular cooking show "Pati's Mexican Table" is Pati Jinich, who was born and raised in Mexico. Jinich says she grew up in a family of "accomplished cooks and food maniacs." But Jinich did not start out as a chef. She was a political analyst and has a master's degree in Latin American studies from Georgetown University. All the while, however, her passion for food remained. She launched "Mexican Table" in 2007, at the urging of the director of the Mexican Cultural Institute. Jinich's new book is "Pati's Mexican Table."
