As music lovers, we've all had a soundtrack to our lives....it's provided to us by the radio. Maybe at this point in the 21st century, that's less of a given. Was it the internet that killed the radio star? Who can truly say, but for most of the rock era, radio has provided songs that millions of music fans would discover, sing along to, discuss with their friends, learn to play on their instrument of choice, get amorous to, get stoned to, or cherish for some personal reason. Welcome to episode 179 of Love That Album. It's been said that in the early days of rock and roll, tyranny of distance made Australian music tougher than its Northern Hemisphere counterparts. Henry Silva might have asked, “Bullshit Or Not?” What is for certain is that Australian rock musicians could often become huge in their home country, but not raise an eyebrow anywhere else (the reverse is also true, but that's a story for another episode). Author Glen Humphries has just published a terrific book called “Aussie Rock Anthems: The Stories Behind Our Biggest Hit Songs". He writes 40 essays about popular songs from the 1960s through to the first decade of the 21st century. These essays tell stories about songs that many Australians grew up with. Some became popular outside our borders, some didn't. These songs show a huge diversity – where else will you get Shadap You Face occupying the same tome as Khe Sanh? At some stage or another, these songs all meant something to the wider Australian populus, and Glen weaves fascinating tales that cover politics, sporting pride, cultural cringe, and musical invention. I was rapt to have someone to discuss these songs with me. Neither of us were fans of every one of the songs covered in the book, and inevitably, people will argue about what was left out. What's important is that these songs all have interesting backstories and are worthy of being celebrated. Tune into find which songs Glen and I absolutely detest...and those we love. In the mid '70s, the SKYHOOKS shook and shaped Australian rock almost as much as The Beatles and Elvis Presley. They basically gave the Australian music industry the enema it had been needing. For too long many Australian bands had spent hours copying their American and English cousins and songs about local culture were unheard of. When Skyhooks burst onto the scene, they were cheeky, brash, colourful and wore makeup and costumes (long before Kiss were even conceived). Their irreverence and catchy tunes spoke cynically of local people and places, and they lit the fuse that put Australian bands back on the front covers of newspapers and Australian music on the shelves of record shops. They appeared on Australian tv on the first day of colour transmission, shocking the parents and becoming the pin up heroes for a generation. With a lead singer named Shirley, guitarist Red Symons who wore red satin and flicked his tongue at the masses and bassist and songwriter, Greg Macainsh sporting silver hair and long drop earrings, theatrics were a key feature that added another level to the electricity of the music. When it comes to classic Aussie rock acts, none is more revered than legendary Melbourne ensemble SKYHOOKS. The glam rockers combined melodic guitar riffs and a pub rock sensibility with relatable lyrics addressing drugs, sex and everyday life in a changing Australia throughout the ‘70s. The band boasts a delectable cocktail of chart-topping singles. They did more in seven years than most rock acts achieve in a lifetime. SKYHOOKS helped change the face of rock'n'roll in the 1970s with a string of Number One and Top 10 singles to their credit, as well as two of Australia's biggest selling albums, ‘Living in the 70s', and ‘Ego is Not A Dirty Word'. Joining me this week is Skyhooks' guitarist BOB 'Bongo' STARKIE- a long time member of the band who still performs their songs today. He tells us about those heady days, what it felt like to be idolised by millions of teenagers and what possibility there maybe of a long awaited comeback. I hope you'll join me - this week on A Breath of Fresh Air. Season 22, Episode #1 Well another year down the crapper some may say, and some day I might be apt to agree with them! But for all of its bullshit 2022 has been not a bad year for music, and for personal growth as well. Though I am not sad to see it in the rearview mirror despite it making me another year older. So before I introduce the show, welcome to the new site. I need to apply some spit and polish to it, but this should allow me to post more shows in a more timely manner. I am going to try to upload some of the old content, like the St. Poguetricks Day episode, and some of the root shows. Though it there are any favorites you want let me know by Facebook, here or email. So without further ado, I have long time been raving about how amazing Aussie Celtic Punk is, and that has not changed. But I have really been getting into Aussie Punk and Oi! as well, because it's amazing. I have a connection that takes good care of me, plus I am naturally a freak and find a lot on mine own. Anyway enjoy this as a New Year treat, Oi! Oi! Aussie Rock n Roll, title inspired by Rust! Listen live Thursday from 7 - 9 om EST at www.BootBoyRadio.net. Episode 32 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 11 August 2022. Actually, that isn't quite true it eventually went out at 19h10 due to the all too familiar computer problems that plague internet radio. I am sure by 2025 all these stations will be a lot more reliable. We started off with Volbeat and ‘Step Into Light', then changed direction and decided to go ‘Into the Pit' with Halford instead. That track came off his Live Insurrection album. From there we had a flurry of Aussie Rock in the form of James Reynes performing ‘Boys Light Up, off the One Night in Melbourne live album, it's a rock classic featuring hummers, and not the type Arnold drives. The rest of the flurry came from Airbourne and Rose Tattoo. Around about this time the server decided that that was enough TSORR for one night and I was left with a ton of disappointed listeners and nothing to do except finish the show for the podcast. The live show is such a big part of TSORR because the audience gives the energy and the show is way more chirpy when it's live. Anyway, it was not to be. We continued with some excellent brand-new metal. ‘Saxons and Vikings' from Amon Amarth. It featured Saxons Biff Byford doing the Saxon part of the duet. It's a very, very cool track, one of my best for the year. We then some Soulfly with a track called ‘Superstition' off the brand new album called Totem. There was bit of Dio and Megadeth in the middle of it all and then we took a listen to a track called ‘Asshole' by Helloween. It's a pretty scathing attack on whoever it was aimed at and to be honest at that particular moment I had a long list of suitable candidates. I dedicated Gov't Mule's beautiful track ‘Soulshine to a few of my friends having a really tough time at the moment and then followed up with U2's amazing track 'Walk On' for everyone who just needs a bit of encouragement in these troubled times. It was time to liven things up with some US punky stuff: Blink 182, Wheatus, and Bloodhound Gang did the honours with Anthem, Teenage Dirtbag, and The Ballad of Chasey Lain respectively. The ladies were represented by The Pretty Reckless and the awesome Taylor Momsen, then we had In This Moment and the power of Maria Brink. While we were there we turned the mic over to Angela Gossow and a track called 'The Day You Died' off Rise of the Tyrant. Michal Amott is just phenomenal on this, Rise of The Tyrant was released in 2007, and still has brother Christopher Amott before he finally left to pursue other interests in 2012. The show stayed heavy because from there we went to Slayer and finally switched the pace a bit with two South African tracks, ‘Born on Death Row' by The Uninvited, and ‘Swords' a track off the brand new album from The Black Cat Bones. We ended the evening in good US rock style thanks to John Mellencamp and TSORR's beloved Tom Petty. The final track is really disturbing, 'Slow Motion' by Third Eye Blind should be a movie. Artists featured: Volbeat, Halford, Marilyn Manson, James Reyne, Airbourne, Rose Tattoo, Don Babylon, Megadeth, Static-X, Helloween, Theory of a Deadman, Emigrate, Dio, Amon Amarth, Soulfly, The Cult, Stone Gossard, John Frusciante, Children of Bodom, Gov't Mule, U2, Blink 182, Wheatus, Bloodhound Gang, ACDC, Ratt, Rush, The Pretty Reckless, In This Moment, Arch Enemy, Slayer, The Uninvited, The Black Cat Bones, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Third Eye Blind.
