Twenty-five years ago, Dave Parkin opened Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth, Western Australia, an independent recording studio that he own's and manages. Since then, he's been working in the music industry, picking up awards along the way—including 14 WAMI Producer of the Year wins and an ARIA-winning song—plus a handful of nominations. Dave's had numerous songs chart in the ARIA rankings and a few tracks in the Triple J Hottest 100, with one reaching #2 and several others making the top 10.Beyond the accolades, one of the most rewarding parts of his career has been working closely with bands such as Jebediah, South Summit, Old Mervs, Great Gable, and Spacey Jane, to name a few, on song structure, arrangement, and helping shape their sound. He's had the privilege of contributing to the launch of many successful artists, both independent and signed to record labels, guiding them through the creative process and bringing their music to life.Despite all that, Dave has kept a pretty low-key online presence and hasn't relied much on advertising— he's always preferred to let the music speak for itself, and people find him through the work he's done. More than anything, Dave loves what he does and feels lucky to have built a career around it. These days, he's found a better balance between work and family, trading the long, late hours of his 20s for a more sustainable routine. Making music is still his passion, but so is spending time with his wife and kids.IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:Getting started with running a studioHow to find good bands to trust you with working on their musicBeing open to experimentationDealing with impostor syndromeHow to create clarity with effectsAutomating effects during the tracking stageWhen to use reverb vs. delayCreating movement in a mix through sidechained effectsDistorting drumsHis trick for tracking big, fat snare soundsTo learn more about Dave Parkin, visit: http://www.blackbirdstudio.com.au/Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Check out our Sponsors:Want more Mixing or Mastering clients? Join Matty O on Triple M Homegrown for a landmark episode featuring Kevin Mitchell from Jebediah. In this exclusive interview, we celebrate a monumental occasion: the release of Jebediah's first album in 12 years, 'Oiks', set to drop on Friday, 12 April 2024. The excitement is palpable as we delve into the details of this highly anticipated album and the release of their new single, 'Rubberman', out now. Kevin Mitchell takes us on a nostalgic journey, reflecting on Jebediah's evolution since their formation in 1994 in Perth, WA. As the band approaches its 30th anniversary, Kevin opens up about the early days - the naivety, the thrill, and the drive that propelled them from local Perth stages to national acclaim. We explore the unique WA pride and how Jebediah paved the way for local bands, choosing to grow their roots in Australian soil instead of seeking fame overseas. This episode is more than a trip down memory lane; it's a celebration of Western Australia's burgeoning music scene. With bands like Spacey Jane and Tame Impala also hailing from Perth, we discuss the incredible growth of the music industry on Australia's West Coast over the last three decades. Being hailed as the poster child for a Covid generation might sit uncomfortably with some indie bands but Caleb Harper, frontman of Spacey Jane—a four-piece from Perth, Australia—takes it in his stride. Their 2020 debut Sunlight is defined by intimate lyrics often rooted in Caleb's strict, religious upbriging, that had made his transition to adulthood particularly fraught. Being part of Spacey Jane with Kieran Lama, Ashton Hardman-Le Cornu and Peppa Lane has continued to help him process feelings of anxiety and alienation. Bouyed by the sunny melodies, these songs have in turn, resonated with young millenials who came of age during the pandemic. For their 2022 follow-up Here Comes Everybody Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy gave his blessings for them to use the working title of Wilco's 2001 masterpiece Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Many thanks for making this possible: — Thank you Caleb for a heartfelt conversation and looking forward to maybe a 'not so sad' song.' Thank you to Kobalt US and Dew Process Publishing for use of all songs. And to Zoe Hines and Grace Jones at Grandstand Media for support.Songs Featured: "Sitting Up," "Thrills," "Good Grief," 'Love Me Like I Haven't Changed," "Booster Seat," "Lunchtime," "Hardlight," "It's Been A Long Day," and "Pulling Through."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com Or leave a voice message here. Spacey Jane have had a breakout few years. The Perth outfit's 2020 debut album Sunlight hit Number 2 on the Australian charts, and their just-released follow up Here Comes Everybody landed at Number 1. Go back to 2016 when the band formed, though, and it's unlikely singer-guitarist Caleb Harper was thinking about this kind of success – at that point, as he was crashing out of university and unsure of what to do with his life, being in a band was simply one of the few things that kept him going. We talk about Caleb's journey from then to now in this interview, as well as his upbringing, the realities of adapting to life in a successful band, and Spacey Jane's decision to remain independent throughout.
Richard speaks to members of the triple j music team to pinpoint their highlights for June.
