Though AC/DC are one of the most revered and successful bands in the history of rock n roll, in 1979 they hadn't cracked the Top 100 in the US. The killer riffs laid down by Malcolm Young had gained them a strong following in Europe and their native Australia but they had yet to breach the great big U-S-of-A. So in 1979 they brought in a new producer, Robert John "Mutt" Lange to give them an edge. And though they were all skeptical after giving Eddie Kramer a shot, once Mutt showed them he knew how to sing, how to get the most out of Angus's guitar and how to put together songs, they were all on board. However, though this would be their big breakthrough in America with Highway To Hell reaching the Top 20, the celebration wouldn't last as lead singer and primary antagonist Bon Scott would soon die while living that rock n roll life. But before he left he gave us some of his patented sexual innuendo (Walk All Over You, Love Hungry Man, Touch Too Much) and his description of his lifestyle in the title track. Cliff Williams had settled in on the bass after Powerage and the live album If You Want Blood You Got It and Angus Young came of age with the help of Mutt Lange in the studio. The result is some of their greatest riffs (Highway To Hell, If You Want Blood (You've Got It), fan favorites (Girls Got Rhythm, Shot Down In Flames) and controversy (Nightprowler). It marked the end of an era with Bon Scott but the start of working with Mutt Lange who would help their next album become the 2nd biggest selling album of all time. This week is another episode all about bands playing other bands' songs… well one band in particular this time around. For those about to rock: we are paying tribute to the one and only; AC/DC! It only took a little thunder and lightning striking experience by way of Kevin's lack of electrician skills to prompt this appreciation!!! It may have taken a few years off his life, but at least we got this killer concept of an episode out of it. AC/DC is such a staple in rock, but perhaps these covers will put a new spin on their amazing songs! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:Hard-Ons – “Let There Be Rock (featuring Henry Rollins)” from Let There Be Rock - single (1991)Lemmy & Jake E. AC/DC's 1978 banger, POWERAGE (pronounced like voltage, amperage, and sausage; NOT like volt-AGE, amper-AGE, or saus-AGE) is undoubtedly one of “the most 1978 sounding” albums that has ever been released in rock and metal.  And after giving it a listen, you'll undoubtedly agree.     It's the first album to feature Cliff Williams on bass, the first album to not have a title track and (perhaps most importantly) it's the favorite AC/DC album of both Keith Richards and Edward Van Halen.  Relative to the rest of their catalog, POWERAGE is quite simply an album beyond comparison.   Prepare to plug in “all three inputs” and remember that “you gotta bro up before you glow up” when talking to your “uncle cousin” (even if he “identifies as a noun”). Behold the advancements in “alien technology”, accept the “invitation” of embracing the uniqueness of the moment and JOIN US for the incomparable 1978-ness of AC/DC's POWERAGE.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. The End Of An Era With SIMON & RASHID From MASSIC

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 21, 2023 39:26

Interview by Kris PetersOne of the most powerful and humbling things about being a part of the global metal family is the bonds that are forged through music. Not only the out and out friendships and life changing moments, but also the subtle nuances that often go unnoticed by all except the parties directly involved. It can be a smile, a glance, a guttural scream to the face, even a wayward elbow in the mosh pit but no matter the genesis of the act the outcome is always the same.We are one, we are many, and we are united in music as in life. While every band starts out this way to an extent the trivialities and triumphs of everyday life can often skew these ideals but while physical connections may fade no one can ever take the one thing away that matters to the core. The music.Which is why many people are often left shattered and disillusioned when their favourite bands retires or makes it to the inevitable next level that elevates them beyond the reach of early fans. Music is life and life is music. Not just for metalheads, but for every person who has been touched in some way by any form of music. That may explain moments of mass hysteria when one of The Beatles appeared at a window, or when Ozzy Osbourne peered over the top of his microphone and lovingly told everyone within earshot to fuck off.Perhaps one of the more magjical components of music is its universal acceptance and maniacal obsession. Many will still remember where they were when Lemmy died or the day Cliff Williams left this realm while others around him suffered barely a scratch. It's like you have lost one of your own and unfortunately that feeling never gets easier to bear.On a less global - but still highly relevant - scale, the Brisbane, Queensland and Australian music community will mourn as one when Brisbane masters of groove and metal Massic play their last show together at The Zoo in Brisbane on Friday, March 24. The fact the band are still active to plan their exit is testament to the courage and strength of vocalist Simon Russell-White whose well publicised heart failure a mere 18 months ago almost brought a premature ending to everything. The fact he got to reunite with his Massic brothers on stage and continue to play and record is a blessing from the Metal Gods themselves and now Massic get the chance to go out on their terms. At their choosing. At their own triumphant farewell.People unfamiliar with the band might be wondering what I am waffling on about, but if you have ever heard, seen, or been welcomed into the all encompassing arms which all five band members extend willingly then you know the score.HEAVY had the honour of sitting down with Simon and bass player Rashid for what could well be Massic's final interview and despite the sense of sorrow hanging in the air we still managed to throw together a decent yarn befitting of the indelible mark the Brisbane outfit has made on the music scene.Massic has also hand picked a stellar supporting cast for their farewell, with Flaming Wreckage, The Black Swamp and From Crisis To Collapse granted the priviilege of sharing the stage with them for the final time, with Simon admitting the process of asking which band to play on the night was difficult to say the least."We were really lucky in the fact that when we got together and decided we were going to do this, which bands did we want to play with us," Simon measured. "There was a fairly decent list in our heads at least, and, like I have said previously, there was no real order. We just had three bands that we wanted to ask first and they all said yes (laughs)."As long as the list of bands was in their heads, the actual number who would have gladly offered their services to play the show was probably double."There was a weighing up there of bands we had played with recently," Rashid offered. "We kind of wanted to reach back over the entire career of Massic and bands that we have played really memorable shows with and maybe haven't had a chance to play with over the last few months to a year.""The Black Swamp we actually did our first album launch with," Simon continued, "so they were a special mention. Flaming Wreckage we met in Sydney for our first - and ultimately only - East Coast tour. We played a couple of shows with them and those boys in general are incredible. From Crisis To Collapse, they're our guys. We played 36 Crazyfists with them and a lockdown show and formed bonds with too. There's other bands that I made a point of not mentioning because they know who they are, but were obvious choices but half of those guys are coming to the show anyway. We were lucky. The first three we wanted to ask, in no particular order, said yes otherwise it was going to be a case of let's go down the line. As Rashid said, some bands that we played recently with a lot we decided let's just catalogue out.""Like Si says, they will probably be in the crowd anyway,"Rashid took over, "which also means they will probably be on stage with us as well anyway (laughs)."In the full interview, Simon and Rashid run us through the plans for Friday's show, hint at some special surprises, talk about the bond they share with their fans and the power of music, recall some of their memorable moments with the band, discuss both albums Redshift and Cognisant and which they feel is better, the main reasons behind the decision to call it a day, regrets, joys, guest performers on the night, the emotions involved and how they plan to deal with them, unfinished business and more.On behalf of everyone who loves metal boys, thanks for enriching our lives musically and personally. It's been an honour, and a pleasure. There are surprisingly still a few tickets left for Friday nights show so if you haven't booked yourself in yet, grab your tickets now from www.oztix.com.au

Más tarde, ese mismo año, editaron el sencillo It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll), que se convirtió en su himno. En otoño de 1977, publicaron Let There Be Rock.

'Give It Up' y 'Can't Stop Rock n' Roll'.

On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Steve Luongo, someone Pipeman is super excited to be interviewing and it makes for an awesome interview. Steve starts with why he's here today, to talk about the John Entwistle Rarities Oxhumed - Volume One, which is a collection of never heard before music, and they decided it was time for the world to hear them, especially with dans pleading with him to put some material out for the last couple years. Pipeman compliments the album cover, which he feels the younger generation are missing out on, and Steve agrees and talks about how the album cover and visuals was all you could go on for when you were buying an album. They move onto the concept of the album which Steve worked on with John's son Chris who he is close with.Steve talks about the double edge sword he feels since John passed away, saying he still feels connected to him, but because their friendship was so long distance, he's used to the absence of him. He continues to talk about his relationship with John and how they became connected so closely. Steve talks about the new album, saying he could have taken the live performances and cleaned them up but that's not true to the performances. John may have hit a bad note here or there, but the energy and the performance is really what people want to hear. He also says there's tracks they weren't going to do anything with which he decided to include in volume 1 too, as well as a song with Keith Moon. The best place to find the new album would be to go to johnentwistle.com, where you'll be able to find a number of collectables, and will also be the place to find Volume 2 when that comes out too!JOHN ENTWISTLE‘S RARITIES OXHUMED - VOLUME ONE, FEATURING UNRELEASED AND REMASTERED STUDIO TRACKS, DEMOS, AND LIVE RECORDINGS IS COMING OCTOBER 21ST. PREVIEW TRACK “I'LL TRY AGAIN TODAY” IS OUT NOW.Steve Luongo has produced, performed, and recorded with several well-known artists including Leslie West of Mountain, Cream bassist Jack Bruce, Eddie Money, Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, Heart's Ann Wilson, Ritchie Blackmore, Mark Farner, Joe Walsh, Billy Squier. The most prolific and significant of all his work was with John Entwistle, best known as the iconic bass guitarist for The Who. The two musicians became the best of friends. Luongo produced, performed, co-wrote, and toured with The John Entwistle Band until Entwistle's death in 2002. Their last live performance together was in Japan during the A Walk Down Abbey Road tour. Later that year he was invited by The Who and Entwistle's family to write and read the eulogy at Entwistle's memorial service in London. In 2007, Luongo served as producer and composer for a studio band he created with AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams, in which Williams recruited frontman Brian Johnson as the vocalist. The project later known as Forklift gave birth to 7 tracks. "Chain Gang on the Road" was the only track offered by the quartet and was briefly available for a free download during a run of US tour dates in 2007. In 2012 Luongo began a musical partnership with Cheap Trick vocalist Robin Zander by forming The Robin Zander Band. Zander was among the first to be asked to appear in Luongo's documentary film An Ox's Tale - The John Entwistle Story about the late John Entwistle (https://youtu.be/PwZrLRBkAfk)John Entwistle is best known as the legendary bassist for the Who. Nicknamed the Ox and Thunderfingers, Entwistle's music career spanned over four decades and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of the Who in 1990. Renowned for his musical abilities, he was voted as the greatest bassist of all time in a 2011 Rolling Stone magazine readers' poll and in its special "100 Greatest Bass Players" issue in 2017. Bass Player magazine named Entwistle at number seven.Rarities Oxhumed - Volume One is the first in a series of posthumous releases coming from John Entwistle as part of a new partnership with Deko Entertainment and longtime friend and collaborator Steve Luongo. This first one has unreleased and remastered studio tracks, demos, and live tracks with gems like “Bogey Man” featuring Keith Moon, “Where You Going Now” (demo for the Who), and a raw live version of “Trick of the Light” recorded during the John Entwistle Band's final tour in 2001. We will also take you behind the scenes with an expanded booklet with never-before-seen photos and a look into life on the road with John Entwistle. As Steve Luongo comments, “John and I began touring together in 1987. Every tour was more fun than the last. That was the idea. Play loud aggressive rock & roll, have fun, laugh our asses off, travel to the next gig, and repeat. During the 15 years that we worked together as a rhythm section, we remained true to that cause. Along the way we recorded some records and created a sizable catalog of ideas and material for the future. The future is now.”The album cover concept was conceived by Steve Luongo and Chris Entwistle (John's son). It gives a nod to John's dark sense of humor and includes many of John's favorite things. The two also worked with celebrity designer Queenie (Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Cardi B) to create two commemorative pieces of jewelry based on the Entwistle Crest. These are limited to only 300 each of both a necklace and keychain. As Deko president, Bruce Pucciarello, states, “Hearing the foundation of sound that John Entwistle provided Pete Townshend on Live at Leeds was transformational for me. Watching Steve find these never heard gems from John's career and making them available to the public is an honor for everyone involved.” The first preview of what's to come is the remastered release of “I'll Try Again Today.”Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. We take a look at the period from 1974 to 1980 where Bon Scott, Angus and Malcolm Young led AC/DC to conquer the rock scenes in Australia, Europe and the UK before they were set to go global with the US market finally warming to them with the release of the Highway To Hell album. Bon was excited for the future with early work kicking off on the "Back in Black" project only for Bon to tragically pass away at the age of just 33 after a heavy night out drinking, leaving the band in limbo and wondering whether or not they should continue on.   Also included in this episode are AC/DC's feuds with punk rock, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, we take a look at the deeper meaning behind the lyrics on the albums High Voltage, TNT, Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, Powerage and Highway To Hell as we discover just how great of a poetic lyricist Bon actually was and we get introduced to Mark Evans, Cliff Williams, Phil Rudd and producer Mutt Lange.
