Stu Watts chats with Hugh Lake, who is a 28-year-old songwriter, producer and DJ who has already made a mark on the Australian music scene with an diverse mix of creative projects to his name. Lake's unorthodox journey to success follows his start as HFNR, notorious club DJ in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia; he is known for his eclectic RnB and Afrobeat influenced sets appearing alongside Sophiegrophy, Lil Spacely, Genesis Owusu, Manu Crooks, Kwame and 360. He soon moved into production, first in his bedroom and then in makeshift studio “The Cabin” built in the backyard of close collaborator and friend Kwasi, with whom he signed to urban label WVS/Onelove in early 2017 as “Kwasi x HFNR”. The HFNR era saw a slew of new wave hip hop projects that were pivotal in shaping the Australian sound. In 2020 he dropped the HFNR moniker, broadening his scope as a genre-bending songwriter and producer that infuses Hip Hop, RnB, Electronic and Pop like no one else. He would show off his tastemaking, writing and production skills on R&B artist Ceeko's debut EP ‘Where Do We Begin', and in that same year he co-wrote and produced Platinum hit “Bigger” with Stan Walker and close collaborator and fellow producer HAMLEY. They would collaborate again to mix and produce a re-imagining of the Split Enz classic “Poor Boy'' to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their seminal album “True Colours”. He then cemented his genre-hopping presence after a move to Sydney, collaborating with Phi11a, BOY SODA, Nardean and Zia Jade. He continues to expand his repertoire as Executive Producer on Lara Andallo's debut EP ‘Diamonds and Deja Vu', as well as Music Direction and Tour Management for her support of the Blxst Australian Tour and the Diamonds and Deja Vu Tour. We have another fantastic episode devoted to travel! Join me as I go behind the scenes with Jaclyn Leibl-Cote, Collette's President & Chief Customer Experience Officer. My relationship with Collette goes back five glorious years. I have been fortunate to tour with their team on two epic trips. I traveled to Japan on the Cultural Treasures of Japan tour, and the second fantastic tour was to explore Iceland on the Land of Fire & Ice tour. This delightful conversation is packed with fascinating travel stories, news, ideas, and inspirational travel itineraries. Let me share some background about my special guest. Jaclyn Leibl-Cote is Collette's President and Chief Customer Experience Officer. As an accomplished Collette Team Member, she has been a tour guide, worked inside the customer care center, designed US and Australia tours on the product development team, and so much more. Her leadership style stems from years of tackling every corner of the business, asking questions, and evolving so that Collette can continue being a leader in travel. Not surprisingly, she's never encountered a challenge that didn't excite her – because obstacles are often the best opportunities. If you ask her, she'll tell you that from 1918 to today, you must grow, change, and always stay true to your values. Overseeing the Product, Tour Management, IT, Marketing, and People & Culture teams, she still finds time to travel. After a lifetime of exploration, New Zealand remains her #1 recommendation and favorite destination. And she did a bungee jump there in 2005 because… "when in Queenstown." And now, she's brought her love of travel to a new generation. She loves exploring the world with her husband and three children and believes the best gift is family travel memories. She hasn't been to Antarctica yet, but it's on her list. We covered a lot of ground in this interview, but here are some of the highlights! Collette celebrates 105 years! What is the power of travel? How the guest experience is the most essential part of the Collette business. The importance of product design. What does this mean exactly? How is a tour created? Why are the tour guides one of the most impactful aspects of a tour? The beauty and splendor of Iceland! Jaclyn's Finland adventures Details of my upcoming Safari with Collette (Can't wait!) 2023 is shaping up to be one of our most amazing travel years ever! I am so excited to share it all with you. How 15 year old Michael Chugg transformed his love of music, and particularly Aussie rock music, into a major business empire, that ended up bringing to Australia, promoting, staging concerts and touring many of THE biggest music stars & bands in the world. Stars like Elton John, Robbie Williams, Bob Dylan, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Police, Dixie Chicks, Madonna and so many more. Michael Chugg backed himself, built relationships in the music business not just locally, but in the UK and the US as well. So how did he do it? By never being afraid of hard work, doing everything that was needed to put on a major concert tour, and he means EVERYTHING. And what are his insights into resilience and longevity in a fast-changing music industry? Always putting the customer – that is, the acts and the fans – first, he says. They are the most important piece of the pie, and if they are right, well, the money would follow. Michael Chugg started Michael Chugg Entertainment in the late 70's; then co-founded Frontier Touring with the late Michael Gudinski; and more recently he started Chugg. Entertainment on his own. Over 5 decades later, he's still taking risks, still scouting and supporting young Aussie music talent, and in this time of the pandemic when musicians are joining together to urge us all to get vaccinated, Michael Chugg is still optimistic about the post-COVID-19 live music scene. Hope you enjoy Part 1 of my chat with Michael Chugg. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
