Michael Craig-Martin talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Craig-Martin was born in Dublin in 1941, and grew up in the US, but has been based in London for most of his working life. Over the past six decades he has created an instantly recognisable body of work in which everyday objects are depicted simply in black outlines and often filled and surrounded by saturated, bright colour. The objects can be alone, in close-up fragments, or in complex combinations, and are captured in everything from small prints to room-scale installations. Intending at first to eschew style, Craig-Martin came to realise that his technique is inimitably his. And the works' meaning has also shifted over the decades, gaining new and poetic meanings. Fifty years on from his first drawing, his core questions remain: what is it to represent something, to make an image of it? How does image-making work? What does it allow you to do? And what happens when a viewer encounters what you have done? The result is a world of sensation and visual and experiential pleasure that might seem unexpected given the nature of the items he depicts. This knack of making the humdrum compelling, even lending it a sensory power and emotional resonance, is why Craig-Martin has remained an enduringly significant figure in contemporary art. He talks about returning to the basics of drawing in the mid-1970s when it was “forbidden territory”, his slow but eventually hearty embrace of colour, why humour is a useful tool in addressing subjects of the utmost seriousness, his early encounter with the work of Picasso as a child in Washington DC, the effect of studying according to the principles of Josef Albers at Yale, his admiration for Bruce Nauman and Gerhard Richter, and his love of the work of Samuel Beckett. Plus, he responds to our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Michael Craig-Martin, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 21 September-10 December; Michael Craig-Martin: An Anthology, Prints and Multiples 1996 – 2024, Cristea Roberts, London, 25 October-23 November. Join us ‘in conversation' with Michael Craig-Martin and A Level art students from South Wilts Grammar School in Salisbury discussing topics such as the artist's approach towards colour, the importance of creativity in any profession and Craig-Martin's journey towards becoming an internationally-renowned artist. Craig-Martin is best known for his vibrant representation of everyday objects that celebrate the ordinary and everyday. The artist was awarded a CBE in 2000, was an elected Royal Academician in 2006 and knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2016. Craig-Martin blurs the boundaries between what is 2D and 3D in his sculpture by representing an upscaled object in one continuous outline as seen in Fountain Pen (turquoise), 2019, which is currently on display at Roche Court Sculpture Park. This is further illustrated by his untitled glass etching piece also exhibited at Roche Court which shows many everyday objects layered on top of each other. The accessibility and relatability of the artist's subject matter is what continues to fascinate the viewer and why his work has been exhibited across the US, Europe, South Korea, China and London. The Roche Court Educational Trust works with over 6,000 children, young people and specialist groups annually, at both the Sculpture Park and elsewhere. We encourage an exploration of modern and contemporary art through our specialist looking, thinking & speaking approach. As an independent charity, we rely on donations to deliver our program. Nick Fudge is a British painter, sculptor and digital artist. He studied at Goldsmiths College in London alongside fellow students such as Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Gary Hume and David Landy under the tutorship of Michael Craig-Martin and Jon Thompson. Such was the talent of this emerging group of artists, they attracted the attention of the top London Galleries and investors and collectively they became known as the Young British Artists - a movement that revitalised the contemporary British Art scene. However, on the eve of his graduate show, Nick took the decision to destroy his collection of work and disappear. He left the UK for the United States and a 25 year long period of self-imposed exile. He became known as the Lost YBA, but he continued to work only recently deciding to return from the United States with a view to exhibiting his now large body of work. Nick, who now lives near Órgiva in La Alpujarra, talks candidly about his decision to leave behind the immediate commercial success of his fellow students and how this decision impacted both his life and his work. Michael Craig-Martin is one of our most influential artists, celebrated for his huge black and white wall drawings and intensely coloured paintings of everyday objects, as well as his installations, sculpture, and computer-generated works. A pioneering conceptualist, he's always provoking questions about what we understand to be art. Born in Dublin in 1941, Michael Craig-Martin grew up in the United States but returned to Britain in the 1960s where he's lived and worked ever since. He's had numerous solo exhibitions and his work is in national collections worldwide. He is Emeritus Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmiths, having taught there for over four decades, and he's been nicknamed 'the godfather of the Young British Artists', who include Damien Hirst, Gary Hume and Sarah Lucas. He received a CBE in 2001 and was knighted in 2016. Michael Craig-Martin talks to Michael Berkeley about the parallels between his art and the music he loves, including Satie, Bach, the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt, and he reveals his long-standing passion for opera. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

These are some of the questions that were explored in this Intelligence Squared Asia debate in Singapore in January 2013.
