Michael Craig-Martin talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Craig-Martin was born in Dublin in 1941, and grew up in the US, but has been based in London for most of his working life. Over the past six decades he has created an instantly recognisable body of work in which everyday objects are depicted simply in black outlines and often filled and surrounded by saturated, bright colour. The objects can be alone, in close-up fragments, or in complex combinations, and are captured in everything from small prints to room-scale installations. Intending at first to eschew style, Craig-Martin came to realise that his technique is inimitably his. And the works' meaning has also shifted over the decades, gaining new and poetic meanings. Fifty years on from his first drawing, his core questions remain: what is it to represent something, to make an image of it? How does image-making work? What does it allow you to do? And what happens when a viewer encounters what you have done? The result is a world of sensation and visual and experiential pleasure that might seem unexpected given the nature of the items he depicts. This knack of making the humdrum compelling, even lending it a sensory power and emotional resonance, is why Craig-Martin has remained an enduringly significant figure in contemporary art. He talks about returning to the basics of drawing in the mid-1970s when it was “forbidden territory”, his slow but eventually hearty embrace of colour, why humour is a useful tool in addressing subjects of the utmost seriousness, his early encounter with the work of Picasso as a child in Washington DC, the effect of studying according to the principles of Josef Albers at Yale, his admiration for Bruce Nauman and Gerhard Richter, and his love of the work of Samuel Beckett. Plus, he responds to our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Michael Craig-Martin, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 21 September-10 December; Michael Craig-Martin: An Anthology, Prints and Multiples 1996 – 2024, Cristea Roberts, London, 25 October-23 November. Two experts discuss the geopolitical risks of solar geoengineering and the need for global governance frameworks to prevent conflict. --- Solar geoengineering, the deliberate modification of Earth's atmosphere to curb global warming, still seems like science fiction. However, research is progressing rapidly, and geoengineering's potential implementation has drawn the attention of the United States Congress, which has mandated a research plan to explore its human and societal impacts. On the podcast, two experts explore one of the least understood, but potentially weighty societal issues surrounding solar geoengineering, namely the potential for the technology to be the source of geopolitical tension and even war. Scott Moore, Practice Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, and Craig Martin, a specialist in public international law at Washburn University, discuss their forthcoming research that considers the uneven distribution of benefits and risks that would result from geoengineering, and how this might lead to conflict between countries. They also explore governance frameworks to help manage geopolitical tensions, if and when solar geoengineering is implemented. Scott Moore is Practice Professor of Political Science, and Director of China Programs and Strategic Initiatives, at the University of Pennsylvania. Craig Martin is a professor of law at Washburn University who specializes in public international law, in particular law pertaining to armed conflict and climate change. With a father who was primarily a jazz drummer, but would play all kinds of local pickup gigs (and still plays today at 87 years young) music came naturally to a blooming Mike Redmond. So it's no surprise an early career in music retail came naturally to young Mike. Starting in Sherman Oaks under the tutelage of Dave Montes, Redmond found himself early on working for Craig Martin in Marina Del Rey. Working in a Supervisor role, then Video Sales Manager, and ultimately Record Sales Manager Mike was promoted to the position of General Manager at the Dublin, CA Tower Records. As expansion continued into the late 90's Mike found himself heading up the store in Stamford CT, best known as a suburban hub for all the CEOs of record labels and media companies, similar to Paramus NJ. It was in Stamford that young Redmond would pepper the GM of the new store on Ave of the Arts Philadelphia regarding sales and other metrics. Duty called and Redmond took over the Washington DC store for close to four years. He finished his time with Tower in Rockville, MD where he worked until the company was sold at auction to the Great American Liquidators. On his way out the door, he threw the (former) GM of that Philadelphia store a lifeline. Join us for a conversation about the joys of working for the world's greatest record store chain.

In 1949 Bill Gargan appeared in Dynamite for Paramount Pictures. It would be his last film until 1956. On March 3rd he appeared on Guest Star. That year he was in New York City when he phoned acquaintance Frank Folsom of RCA. Folsom invited Gargan for lunch. He went to the fifty-third floor of 30 Rockefeller Center. Inside were executives from BBD&O, The New York Stock Exchange, and others. During lunch Gargan mentioned that he was looking for a job in TV. Folsom phoned Norm Blackburn, VP of TV and Radio at NBC and a good friend of Gargan's. Gargan was asked if he'd be interested in playing a pipe-smoking detective, sponsored by the U.S. Tobacco Company. The show became Martin Kane, Private Eye. It would be shot for TV and separately done for radio as well. Mutual Broadcasting carried the radio series. It debuted on Sunday August 7th, 1949 at 4:30PM eastern time. Meanwhile, the TV version aired on NBC Thursdays at 10PM. It was live, and the first detective series on network TV with an enormous following. Gargan realized early on that there was only so much you could do with a plot in a half-hour, so he made the series a showcase for himself. He developed a tongue-in-cheek style. Kane's 37.8 TV rating for the 1950-51 season was twelfth overall. Gargan later said “This was TV's early era, but a few people tried to make the casual intimacy of TV a sexual intimacy. The sight of pretty women, a touch of deep cleavage, a show of thigh became—to these producers—more important than the content of the show. The result was we often had pretty, empty headed girls blowing their lines all over the lot. “In Desperation, I began to mug for the camera more and the script writers began to write more blatantly. You get into a terrible rut this way. Everybody works harder to undo the damage, and the result is more screeching, overacting, and overwriting. It drives the viewers away, and to get them back you come up with more and more desperate gimmickry. “What was worse, to me, was the embarrassment. I'm no prude. Probably the best part I ever did on film was that of Joe in The Knew What They Wanted, a wife-stealer. But this was just sleazy.” The next season the show's rating fell out of the top thirty. By then, Gargan was friends with New York's Cardinal Spellman. A friend of Gargan's mentioned that the Cardinal watched the show. Gargan went to the studio execs and told them to write better scripts or get another star. They got another star — Lloyd Nolan. After eighty-five weeks, Bill Gargan was no longer Martin Kane. Shortly after, Gargan signed a deal with Sonny Werblin, then of MCA, to do a new private eye show for NBC. The show would eventually be called Barry Craig, Confidential Investigator.

This week on The Hockey News On The 'E' Podcast with Jacob Stoller and Justin A. Cohn: - Justin tees up Game 7 between the Fort Wayne Komets and Cincinnati Cyclones, which happened Wednesday night. Heading into Game 7, the Komets came off a commanding 6-0 victory. - Justin originally picked Cincinnati to win in six games, and that brought us to the legend that is "Witchita in six." One of Justin's predictions — and the fallout from it — made national headlines back in 2012. - After being down 2-0 to Utah, Idaho won four straight games to advance past the first round and avoid being on the wrong side of a massive upset. Idaho was the ECHL's best regular-season team this year. - Justin picked South Carolina to win the Kelly Cup....but they got bounced in the first round to Florida. How? Why? Justin explains. - The Jacksonville Icemen are the team of the week. Charles Williams, a goalie on an ECHL contract, played the first four games of the series. That's rare, as usually, NHL/AHL players get the nod. Justin also dives into key performances from Ara Nazarian and Craig Martin.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“You can't fire me!” Was it an inside joke this week's guest shared with friends and confidants or was it a statement of fact, out there in the open? Craig Martin, son of Tower Records CFO Walter “Bud” Martin started working at the 16th & Broadway store in the summer of 1975 at age 15 with  Carl Michelakos  as the store's General Manager. As a young man he got turned on to a variety of jazz guitar players and went down that road learning all that he couldAfter Michelakos left, Craig stayed with Tower in the summers, but instead worked at the Sacramento warehouses before a couple years later moving to San Diego to work with Wayne Ennes. Craig went to great lengths to quiet his relationship to his father so that he would be accepted amongst the crew.  Once Wayne left, his replacement was said to have told the whole store about Bud & Craig, father & son. Working on some of the A Teams, Craig helped open the original store in Seattle, Lincoln Center's original NYC location, Washington DC and London Picadilly Circus. It was in London Craig ran into legal issues and was deported for not having proper work papers. He made his way back, continued to work at Piccadilly and was the General Manger of the London store for four years. After more than five years in London (he was originally supposed to be there for six months) he talked to Stan Goman about coming back to the US. Craig ended his career running the Marina Del Rey store from 1992-2005. Craig recalls his lifelong relationship with Tower Records founder Russ Solomon, whose office he used to pilfer promos as a child.

Show Notes, Episode 51: Who are you? With Craig MartinAbout this show:Last spring several of the assistant principals in our APEx group asked if we could work on howAPs can influence school culture without over-stepping their boundaries. One AP noted thatthis could be especially problematic if you and your principal had very different styles. Backthen I approached this as a culture question, but today I'm looking at it differently. Today, I'mthinking about this through two lenses. The first is authenticity: how do I do a job whereeveryone is watching me all the time, and make sure that I am true to myself? The second lensis sociological. If we were in a room together and someone introduced me as “a leader” you would not besurprised because I look the part. I'm a 6-2 white male in my late 50's, I have a good speakingvoice and I know how to engage with people. And yes, I coached football. In other words, Imeet the societal expectations of what leaders look and sound like in our culture. But what about everyone else? What does it mean to be a leader in schools when you don'tlook like me? How do you maintain your authenticity when the expectations of who can leadand how they should lead are still relatively narrow and rigid?Notable QuotesCraig Martin“To be authentic, in my opinion, means that you recognize in the spaces where you walk, youbreathe, you lead, that you allow the pulses of the young people who are moving about, theteachers who are working with the young people, the custodians, the food service community, the parents, the community partners, you allow those pulses help you center on what you feelled to that important.”“People want to know you're human, they want to know you care”“Being authentic is about, in my Opinion, being open to sharing parts of who you are in yourhuman experience that connect and resonate with others”“Not all acts of vulnerability are created equal. There is a ladder within yourself that is uniqueto you.”“Sometimes the smallest moments are the actually the most meaningful for people when wetalk about vulnerability”“Our kids know us”Assistant Principal Excelerationhttps://www.frederickbuskey.com/apex-members-page.html“In your ability as a leader, you have the ability to transcend what is most important. You havethe ability to send signals to people on ‘this is what i believe in, this is what i am about.' andpeople will find harbor with you, they will look to you for council and coaching anddevelopment. they will want to take those walks because they want to be in spaces where theyfeel safe, they feel affirmed, they feel seen, and they know they will be supported and loved.”“Be okay with not being okay, but consistently love on yourself. and thats a thing I have to keepdoing. I have to keep reminding myself “I am loved, I am thriving, I am safe” but I need to keepfilling myself with those kinds of messages and affirmations”Frederick“Authenticity is not about you, it is about how you relate to all of these other people, andauthenticity involves serving, connecting, and supporting other people”“Our authenticity should remind other people of the best parts of us and the best parts ofothers”Links:Craig's Twitter: @CraigCMartin12Craig's Website: https://www.craigcmartinleads.comMy email: frederick@frederickbuskey.comThe Assistant Principal Podcast website: https://www.frederickbuskey.com/appodcast.htmlSign up for the daily leadership email: https://mailchi.mp/c15c68e6df32/specialeditionWebsite: www.frederickbuskey.comBlog: www.frederickbuskey.com/blog (reposts of the daily email)

Five for Friday OutlineHello colleagues and welcome to the Assistant Principal Podcast. I'm your host Frederick Buskey. The goal of this podcast is to help improve the life and leadership of assistant principals. Today's episode of Five for Friday recaps the strategic leadership emails for the week of December 19-23, 2022. Imagine setting a leadership intention at the beginning of each day. That's what many readers of the daily email do. For some, it has become a ritual: Pour a cup of coffee, open your email, read the Strategic Leader Daily, and set one intention to be aware of or execute for the day. The daily email is a powerful leadership practice so if you aren't already a subscriber, I hope you'll consider joining the list. It's just one more way to include me on your leadership journey, and that would bring me joy. You can find a link on my homepage at https://www.frederickbuskey.com/ Recap…Monday: : Traditions have origins, and traditions change.Three pictures: My mom's Christmas tree Pam and I's Christmas tree Mara's (my daughter) Christmas tree There are lots of similarities because things like Christmas trees are heavily influenced by traditions. Not just the traditions of the family members who preceded us, but also the traditions of our friends, neighbors, and the broader society. There are also some differences between the trees. Traditions are not replicated, they are renewed, and in the process of renewal, some things change.Education example??? Teacher break room? Cigarettes and negativity?Today's intention: Be aware of what you do during this season and why you do it.Tuesday: Productive FailureIt doesn't take courage to fail.It does take courage to publicly acknowledge it, and to turn it into something different. Productive failure. This is a re-release of episode 26 that aired way back in May 2022. This episode is one of my top three favorites, so I hope you listen and grow from it as much as I have. Today's intention: Think about a recent failure, big or small. Is or was there a way to publicly dissect it and learn from it so that others would see how failure can be productive?Wednesday Developing people requires a systems approach. We generally hold athletic coaches in high regard. Unless they lose to their rivals like my Buckeyes did last month

The fifth episode of Making a Mark explores the graphic work of Michael Craig-Martin (b. 1941), one of the best-known artists of his generation. Today his brightly coloured works of everyday objects, from mass-produced consumer goods to fruit and flowers, are easily identified by viewers the world over.   We meet Craig-Martin in his home to discuss his iconic work. He speaks about his earliest prints, the development of his drawing, the introduction of colour to his work, his choice of subject matter including era-defining representations of once familiar yet obsolete technology, and his newest body of prints which pay homage to some of his favourite artists and artworks from Western art history.   We also hear from art critic Ben Luke; artist Julian Opie, who was Craig-Martin's student in the 1980s; writer and broadcaster Louisa Buck and founder and gallery co-director, Alan Cristea, who first suggested to Craig-Martin he make prints over 40 years ago.   Presented by writer and critic, Charlotte Mullins. Making a Mark is a podcast by Cristea Roberts Gallery exploring the relationship between artists and printmaking. Artworks discussed in the episode can be viewed online via https://cristearoberts.com/podcast/ Photo: Caroline True #michaelcraigmartin #printmaking #silkscreen #screenprint #worksonpaper #workonpaper #painting #drawing #everydayobjects #conceptualart #theeveryday #julianopie #josefalbers
