The Lazarus Heist – From Hollywood to High Finance: Inside North Korea's Global Cyber War, is a book that sprang from the hit 10-part BBC podcast series of the same name, which our guest today, Geoff White, co-hosted and which immediately ranked number one in the UK Apple chart and within the top 7 in the US. Season 2 of the podcast will be out in late 2022.About The Lazarus HeistMeet the Lazarus Group, a shadowy cabal of hackers accused of working on behalf of the North Korean state. It's claimed that they form one of the most dangerous criminal enterprises on the planet, having stolen more than $1bn in an international crime spree. Their targets allegedly include central banks, Hollywood film studios and even the British National Health Service. North Korea denies the allegations, saying the accusations are American attempts to tarnish its image. In this staggering, global investigation, award-winning journalist Geoff White examines how the hackers have harnessed cutting-edge technology to launch a decade-long campaign of brazen and merciless raids on its richer, more powerful adversaries. It's not just money they're after. The Lazarus Group's tactics have been used to threaten democracies, gag North Korea's critics and destabilize global peace. From the bustling streets of Dhaka, to the glamorous studios of Hollywood, to the glittering casinos of Macau and the secretive dynastic court of Pyongyang, this shocking story uncovers the secret world of the Lazarus Group, their victims and the people who have tried - and ultimately, so far failed - to stop them._____________________________GuestGeoff WhiteAuthor, speaker, investigative journalist and podcast creator who has worked for the BBC [@BBC], Audible [@audible_com], Penguin [@penguinrandom], Sky News [@SkyNews], The Sunday Times [@thetimes] and many moreOn Twitter | https://twitter.com/geoffwhite247On LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/geoffwhite247/On YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/user/c4newstechnology_____________________________This Episode's SponsorsBlue Lava: https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qs_____________________________ResourcesBook | The Lazarus Heist – From Hollywood to High Finance: Inside North Korea's Global Cyber War: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/447/447163/the-lazarus-heist/9780241554258.htmlBook | Crime Dot Com: From Viruses to Vote Rigging, How Hacking Went Global: https://www.amazon.com/Crime-Dot-Com-Viruses-Rigging/dp/1789142857MITRE ATT&CK Entry for The Lazarus Group: https://attack.mitre.org/groups/G0032/Article: https://www.nccgroup.com/us/the-lazarus-group-north-korean-scourge-for-10-years/Previous Episode: https://itspmagazine.simplecast.com/episodes/the-hacker-journalist-dance-the-need-for-trust-transparency-and-storytelling-in-cybersecurity-a-conversation-with-geoff-white-and-jake-williams_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsFor more about Black Hat and DEF CON  in our event coverage podcasts, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/black-hat-2022-and-def-con-hacker-summer-camp-las-vegas-usa-cybersecurity-event-and-conference-coverageAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?

Back in May I had a conversation with Susanne Paech, the wife of pioneering computer artist Herbert W. Franke. Franke passed away on July 16th. He had just turned 96 in May. Franke was a true innovator, exploring with a pioneer's curiosity the ways humans and machines could collaborate to create unexpected work together. Before computer art was "a thing" and before it was at all obvious as to the processes by which one would create or collaborate with a machine, Herbert was pushing ahead. As with most innovators, it wasn't at all clear to those who had a firm grip on what could count as 'aesthetics' or 'art' that this was anything worthy of consideration. Nevertheless he continued to place value on these explorations and collaborations with everything from an oscilloscope to an Apple II and onward. Please support this podcast over at Patreon! It makes a big difference, and helps me continue to develop and produce this content. And please rate the podcast, write a review on whatever platform you're listening, and share it widely!

It was a dark and stormy night … Ok, what happened? But, wait — How stormy? Lightning? Thunders? How dark? Where? You could leave that to the listener/reader's imagination when you tell a story, but when you need to visualize it, how you render it will lead the audience into the story. In this episode, we welcome back Rafael and Carey to continue our videogame and storytelling conversation we started last month [  https://audiosignals.simplecast.com/episodes/games-blockchain-cloud-storytelling-and-metaverse-a-conversation-with-rafael-brown-and-carey-dsouza-audio-signals-podcast-with-marco-ciappelli-sean-martin  ]We started with some old-school Arcade Games talks and how the evolution of technology has changed how we can build scripts and stories for games and movies. Of course, there are many parallels and divergences in the gaming and movie industry, but there is a big lesson on how knowing the technology you have at hand can help or damage the story you choose to tell. We also discuss the differences between large and indie projects and the best environment to promote creativity outside the box: budgets, time pressure, team size, available technology, a good story, and what else can add to the perfect mix that can promote innovation and genius? Is the book always better than the movie? Or the game? Or what is it that makes great? Maybe it is the correct adaptation to the medium used, and sometimes maybe is even better to tell a partially different story — BladeRunner case, anyone?!We can say that Marshall McLuhan was right: "The medium is the message" [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_medium_is_the_message]BTW, did you watch Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers? [ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3513500/ ]Well, according to Rafael, it should be on your list!Enjoy this conversation, catch up on the first one, and stay tuned for more! Prior Episode:https://audiosignals.simplecast.com/episodes/games-blockchain-cloud-storytelling-and-metaverse-a-conversation-with-rafael-brown-and-carey-dsouza-audio-signals-podcast-with-marco-ciappelli-sean-martin  _____________________________GuestsRafael BrownCEO/Founder at Symbol ZeroOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/rafaelbrown/Carey D'SouzaCEO and Co-Founder at IAMPASS [@iampassHQ]On LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/careydsouza/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/carey_dsouza_____________________________This Episode's SponsorsBlue Lava: https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qsNintex: https://itspm.ag/itspntweb_____________________________ResourcesListen to the previous episode: https://itsprad.io/audiosignals-34_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?

Achieving goals, whatever they may be, is never an overnight event. It takes time, dedication, and, most of all it takes resiliency. Once you have a dream and you want to make it happen, there is one thing you can do “Keep On Pushing.”In this episode, our guest is Devon Harris, Three Times Olympian & Member Of The Jamaican Bobsled Team That Inspired The Classic ‘80s Movie “Cool Runnings,” whom we know because he is part of The Mentor Project. He is sharing with us his story of how he went from growing up in the Kingston ghetto of Sunrise Drive in Olympic Gardens to traveling and experiencing the world thank to his military and athletic career; and how it went full circle back to his elementary school to inspire young kids that just like him may need that one dream and someone to tell them that it can become a reality. As kids, our imagination makes us see ourselves as extraordinary individuals, full of potential, and able to achieve our dreams. Still, reality and fears of taking the first steps can often get in the way. As adults, we must help kids dream and encourage them to go for it.We talk about this and much more in this fun and engaging conversation.Join us! About Devon HarrisBorn 1964, Devon Harris OLY is a Jamaican retired bobsledder and military officer. He was one of the founding members of the Jamaica national bobsled team, which first competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. Nicknamed "Pele" after the famous football star, Harris went on to compete in the 1992 Winter Olympics and the 1998 Winter Olympics.Harris grew up in the Kingston ghetto of Sunrise Drive in Olympic Gardens (known as "Waterhouse," or "Firehouse," because it was a volatile area). A graduate of Drews Ave Secondary School, Ardenne High School, and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Harris had been an avid football player and track and field participant, with his dream being to represent Jamaica in the 1984 Summer Olympics in the 800m and 1500m events. Since the idea for a Jamaican Bobsled Team was pitched to the Jamaica Defence Force, Harris, as a lieutenant in the Second Battalion, first came across the proposal in a weekly army publication called "Force Orders" in September 1987. The text had called for those who wished to "undergo rigorous and dangerous training" to represent Jamaica in the Winter Olympics. Harris initially thought the idea was ridiculous, but was eventually convinced to participate by his colonel, Lt. Col Alan Douglas. At the team selections, Harris ended up with the fastest push time.Harris returned to the military after Calgary and later became a civilian in 1992 after his second Olympics in Albertville, France. He also competed in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. He now works as a motivational public speaker and writer.Harris wrote the 2008 children's book, Yes, I can! : the story of the Jamaican bobsled team, illustrated by Ricardo Cortes and in 2010 published his semi-autobiographical motivational book; Keep On Pushing: Hot Lessons From Cool RunningsIn 2006, Harris founded the Keep On Pushing Foundation which supports the education of kids in disadvantaged communitiesDuring the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, Devon was honored by the World Olympians Association and inducted as an Olympian For Life in recognition of the significant contribution he has made to society in inspiring other never to give up.About The Mentor ProjectThe Mentor Project is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit. Our mentors are experts in science, technology, engineering, the arts, mathematics, business, and law. From developing a patent on how to use credit cards on the Internet to insights on space exploration and astronomy, to titans of industry and world-class technologists, TMP mentors share their skills and knowledge to inspire and guide their mentees._____________________________GuestDevon HarrisMotivational Speaker at Devon Harris & AssociatesOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/keynotespeakerdevonharris/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/Keeponpushing88On YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/KEEPONPUSHINGALWAYSOn Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/keeppushingOn TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@kopbrandThe Mentor Project: https://mentorproject.org_____________________________This Episode's SponsorsBlue Lava: https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qsNintex: https://itspm.ag/itspntweb_____________________________ResourcesMore about Devon Harris: https://www.Devonharris.com_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsTo hear more from The Mentor Project Series, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/the-mentor-project-podcastAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?

The future may still be unpredictable. Disasters, however, are not. While the devil may not always present as such, the boom is still there and, with some new thinking, we can put ourselves to the left of the boom.In this episode, Sean gets to connect again with Juliette Kayyem to talk through some of the real-life stories she discusses in her new book, The Devil Never Sleeps.About the bookIn The Devil Never Sleeps, Juliette Kayyem lays the groundwork for a new approach to dealing with disasters. Presenting the basic themes of crisis management, Kayyem amends the principles we rely on far too easily. Instead, she offers us a new framework to anticipate the “devil's” inevitable return, highlighting the leadership deficiencies we need to overcome and the forward thinking we need to harness. It's no longer about preventing a disaster from occurring, but learning how to use the tools at our disposal to minimize the consequences when it does.Filled with personal anecdotes and real-life examples from natural disasters like the California wildfires to man-made ones like the Boeing 737 MAX crisis, The Devil Never Sleeps is a guide for governments, businesses, and individuals alike on how to alter our thinking so that we can develop effective strategies in the face of perpetual catastrophe._____________________________GuestsJuliette KayyemBelfer Lecturer in International Security at Harvard Kennedy School [@Kennedy_School], Security Analyst at CNN [@CNN], and CEO and Co Founder at Grip Mobility and ZemcarWebsite | https://juliettekayyem.com/On LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliettekayyem/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/juliettekayyem_____________________________This Episode's SponsorsBlue Lava: https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qsNintex: https://itspm.ag/itspntweb_____________________________ResourcesBook | The Devil Never Sleeps: Learning to Live in an Age of Disastershttps://juliettekayyem.com/the-devil-never-sleeps/Podcast | RSAC Event Coverage | Digital life, real life, complexity, risk, and keeping the flow: https://itspmagazine.simplecast.com/episodes/chats-on-the-road-to-rsac-usa-2020-three-with-juliette-kayyemPodcast | Defining Critical Infrastructure | With Juliette Kayyem, Emilian Papadopoulos, Mati Epstein: https://itspmagazine.simplecast.com/episodes/defining-critical-infrastructure-with-juliette-kayyem-emilian-papadopoulos-mati-epstein_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?

Once upon a time, a student that hated the school system made his mission to change it. Today he is going strong at it, and he is telling us how and his vision for 2030.Inspired by one of his articles, we invited Michael Yates, Co-Founder of Guide, Keynote Speaker & Education Consultant.“What was school like for you? I hated school. I hated the desks in rows, the standardized testing, and the awful cafeteria food. More than anything, I could not stand the vast amounts of time I felt I was wasting by learning things that held no relevance to my adult life. As a student, I dreamed of doing school a different way. I now spend almost every day working to disrupt and change the system that I believe failed me and so many other students. I talk, write and dream so much about the future of learning, education, and schools. Here is what I think school could look like in 2030.”Join us for this passionate conversation about what school should and should not be. _____________________________GuestMichael YatesSenior Managing Director of Network Strategy at the TFA Reinvention Lab, powered by Teach For AmericaOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-yates/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/justmikeyatesOn TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@justmikeyatesOn YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzDbw_YMuH_rSPU5hxXPOFg_____________________________This Episode's SponsorsBlue Lava: https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qsNintex: https://itspm.ag/itspntweb_____________________________ResourcesInspiring post on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/heres-what-school-could-look-like-2030-mike-yates/More about Mike Yates: https://www.yatesmike.com/home_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signals_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?

Can Artificial Intelligence Be An Artist? | An Audio Signals Conversation With Ben Kovalis

This is a story that you haven't heard yet, but we guarantee that it won't be the last of its kind. It is a tale of art, technology, digital collectors, Artificial Intelligence, creativity, NFTs (Non-fungible tokens), and so much more.It starts with a painter that has spent precious time creating an original piece of art. As soon as the brush rests on the table, an art critic judges the job, forcing the artist to start over again and do better. The painter returns to work, the critic weights in again, and the process repeats until the antagonist is fooled. Finally, the adversarial challenge is over; the piece is minted and eventually sold to a human collector. Because you see, the artist is AI. And so is the critic. Now the collector that acquired the piece is challenged as well. A new decision must be made: keeping the digital art, auctioning it, or obtaining a second one and eventually renounce both to create a new unique piece of the two originals that will be “burned” to give life to the new one and eventually be acquired, potentially changed by the new owners that will add yet another chapter to the history of the piece.  An ever-changing art story is possible because of AI, NFTs, and the human creativity that fuels art.So, can Artificial Intelligence be an artist? Can it be it on its own, or it must have the human input to be considered such?Of this and much more, we talk in this podcast with Ben Kovalis and Marco Ciappelli.Enjoy, and let us know your thoughts about the matter. Whether you are a digital or human entity, either way, we will treasure your feedback.

We'll discuss how simple techniques with limited technology back then could yield compelling pieces. We'll see how the history of computer displays and printers have evolved in the 1950s to 1980s. While quite a bit of retro art survives today, most of them do not come preserved with their algorithms. In this talk, I'll also demo some attempts to recreate retro art pieces using p5.js, a JavaScript graphics library as well as talk through some of the techniques of creating generative computer art.

Carolyn L. Kane’s new book traces the modern history of digital color, focusing on the role of electronic color in computer art and media aesthetics since 1960. Chromatic Algorithms: Synthetic Color, Computer Art, and Aesthetics after Code (University of Chicago Press, 2014) places color at the center of media studies, exploring some amazing works of art and technology to understand the changing history of the relationship between color as embodied in machine code and screen interface. Using a methodology called “media archaeology” that is informed by the work of Foucault, Nietzsche, Kittler, Heidegger, Stiegler, and others, Chromatic Algorithms traces a transformation of color from optics to algorithms.  The chapters trace a history of synthetic color in Western aesthetics and philosophy, the rise of Day-Glo, the aesthetics of color in video art from the 1960s and 1970s, the technology of color TVs, the connection between color and notions of transcendence and utopia, “democratic color” and Salvador Dalí’s urinated-upon pen, the early history of art/engineering at Bell Labs, the technology of digital infrared visualization, the aesthetics of “Photoshop cinema,” bioart and its glow-in-the-dark bunnies, and the work of some amazing artists including Lillian Schwartz, Jeremy Blake, and many many others. November 2, 2012 With Sara Diamond and Pamela Jennings In a broad sense, agendas for research development are often shaped by political and economic forces external to art and design institutions. Criticisms of the arts and humanities, policies geared toward economic development, and evaluations based on the instrumental value of research create familiar tensions and fault lines within our faculties and research communities. We are interested in investigating both the present state and the future possibilities of this political–economic landscape with a focus on its implications for the advocacy and funding of research in art and design. Sara Diamond is the President of OCAD University, Canada’s “university of the imagination”. She holds a PhD in Computer Science and degrees in new media theory and practice, social history and communications. She is an appointee of the Order of Ontario and the Royal Canadian Society of Artists. While retaining OCAD University’s traditional strengths in art and design, Diamond has guided the university in becoming a leader in digital media, design research and curriculum through the Digital Futures Initiative, new research in Inclusive Design, health and design, as well as in sustainable technologies and design. She also played a leading role in OCAD University’s establishment of the unique Aboriginal Visual Culture Program. These initiatives have built strong partnerships for OCAD University with science, business and communities, in Ontario and abroad. Sara was the Artistic Director of Media and Visual Art and Director of Research at the Banff Centre, where she created the Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) in 1995 and led it until 2005. Her book (with Sarah Cook) Euphoria & Dystopia: The Banff New Media Dialogues, a history of the boom, bust and reset years of the first wave of digital media is currently available; published by Banff Centre Press and Riverdale Architectural Press, University of Waterloo. Pamela L. Jennings is the Director of the Earl and Brenda Shapiro Centers for Research and Collaboration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). The Shapiro Center was established to support the development of sponsored research opportunities and partnerships with civic, academic and corporate entities. Jennings is a former National Science Foundation Program Officer. She managed the NSF CreativeIT and co-managed the Human Centered Computing programs. Jennings’ research in cyberphysical systems for new game, learning, and design platforms includes the development of mixed-reality systems using wireless sensor networks. Her projects are informed by critical theories of technology, discourse analysis, and theories of the public sphere with the premise that advanced technologies and complex systems can be the anchor of interactive experiences that are catalyst for discourse, discovery, and change. Pamela received funding from the National Science Foundation; Alberta Informatics Circle of Research Excellence; Rockefeller Foundation; New York State Council on the Arts, Carnegie Mellon University and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She completed her Ph.D. in Human Centered Systems Design and Digital Media, University of Plymouth, UK; M.F.A. in Computer Art, School of Visual Arts, NYC; M.A. in Studio Art, International Center of Photography/New York University Program; and B.A. in Psychology, Oberlin College. Pamela is enrolled in the Executive MBA program at the University of Michigan anticipated completion in 2013.

With John Wilson Ben Elton began his career as a stand-up comedian, and went on to write TV comedies, musicals and novels including Popcorn. His latest novel is Two Brothers, inspired by his family history about adopted brothers who go on to fight on opposite sides of the second world war. He reveals why this is a story he'd always wanted to tell. Danny Boyle - film-maker and impresario behind the London Olympics Opening Ceremony - joins regional theatre directors from across the UK who are meeting at the National Theatre to raise concerns about their funding and the potential cuts they may soon face. Creating art on a computer is commonplace now, but in the early days of computing, it was quite unexpected. As new solo shows of work by pioneering computer artists Ernest Edmonds and Manfred Mohr open this week, Catherine Mason, author of A Computer in the Art Room, discusses how they created a new area of art in the 1960s and changed the way that computers are viewed. As Silver Linings Playbook is released in cinemas next week, critic Jane Graham considers other film titles which may seem baffling or too long and considers whether a bad title can affect a movie's box-office takings Producer Jerome Weatherald.

In today’s high school art curriculum there is a separation between the visual art class and the technology class. The current high school art curriculum’s focus is on traditional media with very little integrated technology. Technology is separated from traditional visual art classes and given it’s own course titles such as Computer Art. Likewise, there is a separation in the selection of art medium. Though the art world has evolved to using a plethora of new materials, the majority of art class storage rooms are filled with pencils, tempera paint and other traditional media. Our challenge as art educators is twofold. First, merge new technology into our everyday art lessons. Second, share with students concepts and ideas that use both traditional materials as well as branch out to media traditionally not consider art material. In this presentation we will explore ways to incorporate technology into the full range of an art project. We will explore everything from jump starting the ideas, to developing maps and templates, to critiquing online and digital grading. Furthermore, we will accomplish this through the exploration of such nontraditional materials as post-it notes, glow sticks and mud.

Sol LeWitt published “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art” in Artforum, June 1967. They became an influential theoretical text on art of the twentieth century. They played the role of a manifesto even though they appeared when their topic - concept over matter - had already existed for about a decade. Digital computer art had had its first exhibitions in 1965. It seems it never produced a manifesto, with the exception, perhaps, of Max Bense’s “Projects of generative aesthetics” (1965, in German). Since computer art is a brother of conceptual art, it is justified in a late manifesto to borrow the style of the old title.

Computer art was started by a small group of pioneering artists who had the vision to see what digital tools and technology could bring to the creative process. The technology at the time was primitive, compared to what we have today, and these artists faced resistance from the traditional art establishment. Several organisations, such as the New York Digital Salon, were started to promote digital creativity through exhibitions, publications and websites. This paper will explore how to create continuity between computer art history and a new generation of artists that does not see making art with computers as unusual and views it as contemporary art.
