The trek would take us along the Trans Canada highway following a route around Lake Superior and passing through cites like Wawa, which had an enormous Canada goose statue, Dryden with the monumental statue of Max the Moose, and Sudbury Ontario with the Big nickel.The big nickel. It was enormous. This thing was a towering 30 feet tall and was said to be about 64 million times the size of the nickel you'd have in your pocket. In a time when penny candy stores were a big thing for a youngster in the late 60's, how much that nickel could buy at Ed's market, the candy store a walk from my parent's house, was beyond imagination. Sudbury was also one of the largest nickel mining areas on the planet. My memory of Sudbury at that time was that it was desolate. For miles around the nickel mines, Sudbury was gray. The landscape was just gray. There were no trees. There was no grass. It was the closest thing my young mind could have imagined when thinking about what the surface of the moon would have looked like. In those seemingly dead zones, it was stark and infertile.In 1971 and '72 NASA actually sent its astronauts to train there for the Apollo 16 and 17 missions, because it approximated what astronauts would encounter when they landed on the lunar surface.While I passed through as a tourist on vacation, there was another boy who lived there in the house at the end of a street beyond which there was only 200 miles of Boreal Forest. As an adult the boy who lived at the end of the street before the forest started would describe those years as ‘lawless' and like walking a Vaseline greased edge on which a misplaced step would send you careening into a chasm from which you would never climb out. Finding his way out of the Boreal Forest, it turns out, would also serve in later years as an apt metaphor for finding a way out of a childhood of adverse experiences to a career as one of the most successful designers of the last 50 years. The house of the end of the street was not the end of the road for Bruce Mau. At a young age, he had other plans to not slip and fall into the chasm, but to find his way out of the forest. To follow a path with an entrepreneurial spirit, of exploration and discovery, continually scanning the world for opportunity. Mau believes that “you need to be taught the entrepreneurial mindset of being lost in the forest and discovering a methodology for finding your way out. You need a compass. You need a way of actually navigating any forest not just the one in front of you.” That, he says, is a very different mindset and design is actually built to do it. That's what designers do…”Looking back, Mau now deeply appreciates how those decisions that he made when he was twelve set that in motion and kind of created the space for him to do what he does and to be who he is.Despite his extraordinary success, he understands that, whatever the kind of problem and no matter how right he believes his solution is, it is it's meaningless if he can't inspire people to do it.He explains that “..I have to show them what that means. I have to show them the destination and I have to take them there in their imagination. I've got to say, ‘look I know we're here now but we're going to go over there. I'm telling you over there is awesome and here's what's going to happen…”I was first exposed to Bruce's creative thinking process through his landmark architectural book “S, M, L, XL”with the world renowned architect Rem Koolhaas. Inspiration to many of today's international contemporary galleries, Maureen was in fact the reason our co-host Robert Diament became inspired to change careers to work full-time in a gallery!We discover how she began her gallery programme in 1984 in a Victorian terraced house in London's East End. Initially named Interim Art, the gallery changed its name to Maureen Paley in 2004 as a celebration of its 20th anniversary. Since September 1999 the gallery has been situated in Bethnal Green, and in September 2020 relocated to Three Colts Lane. In July 2017 Maureen Paley opened a second space in Hove called Morena di Luna. In October 2020 a third space was opened in Shoreditch, London called Studio M. From its inception, the gallery's aim has remained consistent: to promote great and innovative artists in all media.-Maureen Paley was one of the first to present contemporary art in London's East End and has been a pioneer of the current scene, promoting and showing a diverse range of international artists. Gallery artists include Turner Prize winners Lawrence Abu Hamdan, 2019; Wolfgang Tillmans, 2000 and Gillian Wearing, 1997 as well as Turner Prize nominees Rebecca Warren, 2006; Liam Gillick, 2002; Jane and Louise Wilson, 1999 and Hannah Collins, 1993. Tom Wilmott selects 'The Exorcist' by William Peter Blatty. Published in 1971, the novel portrays the wildly disturbing behaviour of 12 year old Regan, whose mother seeks help from a plethora of medical specialists until, in desperation, she arranges a priest to perform an exorcism of her daughter to cast out the devil. In a fascinating and deeply personal reading of the book, Tom sees the devil as a stand in for depression. We discuss the lengths to which he has shaped his practice in a dedicated effort to keeping his own destructive side at bay and maintain mental wellness. Resulting in a non-commercial art practice, his unique approach has also given rise to charitable initiatives including Painting Pro Bono and Painting Per Diem. Christian Lauchenauer studied 5 years of Industrial Design. Afterward, he worked for one year as an Industrial and Human-Centered Designer in a Swiss design office. After several projects with no budget and actors, he decided to study film in Zürich. But he had already more preferences for video art and got inspired by artists like Bill Viola, Jean-Luc Godard, Richard Serra, Peter Liechti, Steve McQueen, and Douglas Gordon. Today he is a video artist and designer and lives and works in Basel. On The Dissolution of Content: More and more I saw myself faced with the addiction to the consumption of information on my smartphone. As well I observed at many places around me people using their smartphone while avoiding any circumstances in their environment. But the initiation for the movie was my consideration of the speed of our consumption of information. Are we still able nowadays to comprehend and keep in mind what we were reading on our digital device? Where is the speed limit of information consumption, after that we just read a text or watch a video without processing any information or content? The dissolution of content is a critical movie project about our incredible fast-changing world, where it is maybe rather about our addiction to”Infotainment” than getting informed. If you reflect on the structure of the video feeds of popular social media platforms, you jump from a violent war video to a funny cat and may end up at a heartbreaking talk of a political activist. Therefore it happens you remember only a few of all the videos you just have watched and often in a weird combination. Anyway, each video is a click away. Sometimes it seems to me we gather information as we are eating without digesting. Is it immorally just consuming infotainment without attaching any importance to content? En septembre dernier, Delphine Roche proposait au Consulat, la performance « Why do we sweat », installant un ring de boxe en plein cœur de l’exposition Ocean Memories de Mathieu Lehanneur, disant chercher à interroger la chorégraphie sociale, ainsi que la construction par le corps d’archétypes sociaux. De cette performance vient une interrogation large et qui ne date pas d’hier : celles des manières d’articuler art et sport, et surtout des intentions qui président à la conjonction de ces deux pratiques, à cette friction entre ce qu’a priori on considère d’un côté comme une activité physique et collective, de l’autre comme une expérience surtout intellectuelle, et solipsiste. Du renversement de cet a priori, on en trouve de toutes formes, de tout médium, et de toutes époques. Et surtout, on peut dire que tous les sports y passent : le football avec le film de Philippe Parrenno et Douglas Gordon sur Z. Zidane ; la boxe avec les chats prêts à en découdre d’Alain Séchas; le Tao du salarié pour Julien Prévieux ; ou encore le basket avec les Two balls total equilibrium tank de Jeff Koons. Autant de sport, de médiums, de pratiques esthétiques et de visions de l’art différentes, avec peut-être néanmoins un même prédicat de départ, qui souligne l’évidence : art et sport sont en un sens des pratiques qui se construisent à plusieurs dans l’espace social et viennent cadrer la vie quotidienne, tout en apportant un surplus de sensibilité et un dépassement de soi dans l’expérience sportive et dans l'expérience esthétique. Synopsis Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Douglas Gordon (24 Hour Psycho, Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait) returns to the Festival with this intimate portrait of avant-garde cinema legend Jonas Mekas. "An adventurer can always return home; an exile cannot. So I decided that culture would be my home." Jonas Mekas Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Douglas Gordon returns to the Festival with an intimate portrait of Jonas Mekas, the legendary poet, film critic, risk-taking curator, "the godfather of the American avant-garde cinema" -- and, at 93 years old, among the remaining few to have escaped and survived Nazi persecution. I Had Nowhere to Go plunges us into both a collective and individual space of memory via long, imageless stretches over which Mekas narrates, in his inimitable voice, excerpts from his memoir (which lends the film its title). An extraordinary life story emerges as the film zigzags between Mekas' early years in a forced labour camp and a Displaced Person centre during WWII and his arrival in New York as a young Lithuanian émigré. With an immersive sound environment and intermittent, fleeting images that stand in evocative juxtaposition to Mekas' anecdotes, Gordon's film reveals in its subject a puckish humour that outweighs despair, and an unabated zest for life that both illuminates and softens the sadness. A deeply moving tribute from one great artist to another and a singular work in its own right, I Had Nowhere to Go has timely resonance today as mass migratory movements are displacing millions of people throughout the world as refugees, exiles, and stateless persons. While Mekas is certainly no ordinary person, the story he tells is a profoundly humble one, as much about daily survival as it is about aspiring to accomplish so much more. Gordon, who is ingenious at activating memory and the cinematic imaginary, compellingly presents quotidian moments outside of Mekas' famous film-related activities in order to reveal the desires, impulses, melancholy, and perseverance that inform Mekas' filmmaking and infectious love of cinema. Even when truly having nowhere to go, Mekas always saw brief glimpses of beauty as he was moving ahead. Biography Jonas Mekas - Writer Jonas Mekas born December 24, 1922, is a Lithuanian-born American filmmaker, writer, and curator who has often been called "the godfather of American avant-garde cinema." His work has been exhibited in museums and festivals across Europe and America. In 1944, Mekas left Lithuania because of war. En route, his train was stopped in Germany and he and his brother, Adolfas Mekas, were imprisoned in a labor camp in Elmshorn, a suburb of Hamburg, for eight months. The brothers escaped and were detained near the Danish border where they hid on a farm for two months until the end of the war. After the war, Mekas lived in displaced person camps in Wiesbaden and Kassel. From 1946-48, he studied philosophy at the University of Mainz and at the end of 1949, he emigrated with his brother to the U.S., settling in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. After his arrival, he borrowed the money to buy his first Bolex 16-mm camera and began to record moments of his life. He discovered avant-garde film at venues such as Amos Vogel's pioneering Cinema 16, and he began screening his own films in 1953 at Gallery East on Avenue A and Houston Street, and a Film Forum series at Carl Fisher Auditorium on 57th Street. In 1954, he became editor of Film Culture, and in 1958, began writing his "Movie Journal" column for The Village Voice. In 1962, he co-founded Film-Makers' Cooperative (FMC) and the Filmmaker's Cinematheque in 1964, which eventually grew into Anthology Film Archives, one of the world’s largest and most important repositories of avant-garde films. The films and the voluminous collection of photographs and paper documents (mostly from or about avant garde film makers of the 1950-1980 period) were moved from time to time based on Mekas' ability to raise grant money to pay to house the massive collection. He was part of the New American Cinema, with, in particular, fellow film-maker Lionel Rogosin. He was heavily involved with artists such as Andy Warhol, Nico, Allen Ginsberg, Yoko Ono, John Lennon, Salvador Dalí, and fellow Lithuanian George Maciunas. In 1970, Anthology Film Archives opened on 425 Lafayette Street as a film museum, screening space, and a library, with Mekas as its director. Mekas, along with Stan Brakhage, Ken Kelman, Peter Kubelka, James Broughton, and P. Adams Sitney, begin the ambitious Essential Cinema project at Anthology Film Archives to establish a canon of important cinematic works. Mekas' own output ranging from narrative films (Guns of the Trees, 1961) to documentaries (The Brig, 1963) and to "diaries" such as Walden (1969); Lost, Lost, Lost (1975);Reminiscences of a Voyage to Lithuania (1972) and Zefiro torna (1992) have been screened extensively at festivals and museums around the world. In 2001, he released a five-hour long diary film entitled As I Was Moving Ahead. Martin Scorsese said once: "Jonas Mekas is the one that gave me the desire and strength to be a director." Douglas Gordon - Director Douglas Gordon's practice encompasses video and film, installation, sculpture, photography, and text. Through his work, Gordon investigates human conditions like memory and the passage of time, as well as universal dualities such as life and death, good and evil, right and wrong. Gordon's oeuvre has been exhibited globally and his film works have been presented at many competitions, including the Festival de Cannes, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the International Venice Film Festival. Gordon received the 1996 Turner Prize, the Premio 2000 prize for best young artist at the 1997 Venice Biennale, and the 1998 Hugo Boss Prize. Most recently, in May 2008 he was awarded the Roswitha Haftmann Prize by the Kunsthaus Zurich and, in 2012 the KätheKollwitz Prize from the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. Gordon was the International Juror at the 65th International Venice Film Festival, and in 2012 he was the Jury president of CinemaXXI at the 7th International Rome Film Festival. In December 2014 Douglas Gordon and pianist Hélène Grimaud have joined forces to explore the beauty of water in an extraordinary performance at Armory on Park, New York. The collaboration continued when Gordon directed the theatre performance Neck of the Woods starring Charlotte Rampling and Hélène Grimuaud at the 2015 MIF - Manchester International Festival, Manchester. Born in Scotland, Gordon lives and works in Berlin and Glasgow and teaches film at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. İstanbul Eindhoven-SALTVanAbbe, a collaborative project between SALT and Van Abbemuseum, will evolve over the course of three exhibitions presented across both SALT venues throughout 2012. The first exhibition, İstanbul Eindhoven-SALTVanAbbe: Post ’89, opens on January 27 and presents art works loaned from the Van Abbemuseum collection that were produced after the year 1989. In collaboration with the team at Van Abbemuseum, SALT has selected over forty individual works by fifteen international artists who have either never shown in İstanbul or have been rarely exhibited despite their notoriety.
