On the final day of the Monsters of Rock Cruise, Eddie Trunk welcomes Jeff Scott Soto, Jason Bieler, and David Ellison for an engaging discussion about their musical collaborations and individual projects. The trio talks about Saigon Kick's recent performances with Jeff on vocals, replacing the original singer while maintaining the band's authentic sound. David shares updates on his work with Metal Church and Kings of Thrash, while Jeff discusses his successful run with Trans-Siberian Orchestra and his remarkable recovery from knee replacement surgery. After that, members of Queensrÿche join Eddie to discuss their unique position straddling both metal and progressive rock genres. Todd La Torre shares insights about his vocal approach and maintaining his voice after 14 years with the band, while Michael Wilton and Eddie Jackson talk about their side projects and the band's musical DNA. Then, Michael Sweet of Stryper sits down with Eddie to discuss the band's increasingly heavy sound, which even impressed Sebastian Bach. Sweet provides an update on his cancer battle and shares news about Stryper's 18th studio album coming in September. Last but not least, Davy Vain joins to talk about his band's raw, attitude-driven sound, their production approach on the classic 'No Respect' album, and their upcoming show at the Whisky a Go Go in September. Queensryche were always different from their hard rock & hair metal brethren in the 80s & 90s. Based out of Seattle, Geoff Tate (vocals), Chris DeGarmo (lead guitar), Michael Wilton (lead & rhythm guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) created a more prog rock sound akin to that of Rush or Dream Theater. Tate's soaring vocals against the brilliant guitar work and fiesty rhythm section gave them a sound all their own in a sea of hair, power chords and the occasional power ballad. After coming off 1988's concept album Operation: Mindcrime, the band were confident and ready to take the next step to superstardom. 1990's Empire is generally referred to as their best effort and was their best seller with more than 3 million in the US alone. Thanks to MTV and rock radio, Queensryche music was in the air in 1990 and 1991 (at least until the fall) thanks to big hit like the title track, Best I Can, Jet City Woman and Another Rainy Night (Without You) and perhaps the greatest hard rock power ballad of all time, Silent Lucidity. That last song topped the mainstream rock charts and landed in the top ten on Billboard. However, thanks to elements at work in their hometown, the party didn't last. Once Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves in the fall of 1991, hard rock and hair metal would soon be shown the door by record companies looking to capitalize on the new trend. Though 1994's Promised Land went platinum and had some highlights, it was very out of place in the new flannel-clad culture. Eventually, DeGarmo would leave never to return and turmoil would separate Tate from his band in the 21st Century. However, this album stands as a testament to the bands talent and should be remembered as one of the best of the era. Currently out on a headline tour across the United States supporting their latest album Digital Noise Alliance, I caught up with Queensryche guitarist Michael Wilton. Michael is a founding member of this legendary metal band and over the course of their 40-year career, they've stuck to their ways and have carved out their own path. Not a lot of bands who have faced the kind of adversary that they have can say the same. Their latest offering is another example of their greatness but also includes an interesting cover choice. It's an absolute honor to have a conversation with one of rock's greatest players.

On the 39th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1988 concept album by Queensryche, "Operation: Mindcrime." This was Queensryche's 3rd studio album. Lead singer, Geoff Tate cam up with the idea of the concept album after living in Canada and then convinced guitarist, Chris DeGarmo who then got the rest of the band interested. The story is about a man named, Nikki who gets involved in political assassinations, drugs and revolutions. The band was led by vocalist Geoff Tate and his unique look and incredible vocal range. The dual guitar attack of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton and rhythm section of bassist, Eddie Jackson and drummer, Scott Rockenfield provide the unique Queensryche sound. The album was produced by Peter Collins and showed that Queensryche although wrongly lumped in with hair metal bands of that era, was something original and had something to say. . As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 35 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This week is our 8th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we pay homage to the rock n' roll rags to riches story that is the metal god-like voice that is Tim “Ripper” Owens. He inspired a major motion picture, not to mention gave opportunities to countless other singers from tribute bands to perhaps be considered as the replacement for the real deals. This guy has some of the most sought-after pipes of the last 25 years. All hear our warning; never turn your back on The Ripper!New to InObscuria? It's all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode originally aired on July 31st, 2017. Steve Cooper talks with guitarist Michael Wilton. Michael is one of the founding members in 1982 of the band Queensryche. The band has released 14 studio albums, 1 EP, several DVDs and continues to tour and record. They have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, including over 6 million albums in the United States. The band received worldwide acclaim after the release of their 1988 album Operation: Mindcrime which is often considered one of the greatest heavy metal concept albums of all time. Their follow-up release Empire, released in 1990, was also very successful and included the hit single Silent Lucidity. The band has received three Grammy nominations for songs from both albums. His nickname is The Whip for how fast his fingers "whip" around the guitar fretboard and he also has his own beer called Whip Ale. Michael Wilton of Queensryche talks to Rock Scene about his very young years in San Francisco, moving to Seattle Washington and playing bass in garage bands while growing up. Eventually switching instruments with a guitar player, Michael began learning all that he could about the guitar. After high school, he attended the Cornish Institute of Allied Arts for a year and a half until running out of money, forcing him to take a job. In doing so, he met Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Chris DeGarmo. They started jamming and eventually put together a 4 song E.P. The only thing missing was a singer. Chris DeGarmo recruited Geoff Tate to lay his vocals down, and Queensryche was born.
O QUEENSRŸCHE deixou sua marca na história da música como sendo uma das maiores referências no quesito álbum conceitual e ópera rock após do lançamento do "OPERATION: MINDCRIME". O disco conta uma única história, dividida entre as seguintes faixas: "I Remember Now", "Anarchy—X", "Revolution Calling", "Operation: Mindcrime", "Speak", "Spreading the Disease", "The Mission", "Suite Sister Mary", "The Needle Lies", "Electric Requiem", "Breaking the Silence", "I Don't Believe in Love", "Waiting for 22", "My Empty Room" e "Eyes of a Stranger". A banda era formada por Geoff Tate (vocal), Chris DeGarmo (guitarra), Michael Wilton (guitarra), Eddie Jackson (baixo) e Scott Rockenfield (bateria).
