According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association, there were 654 patients waiting for a bed in a ward in the country's hospitals this morning, which is fourteen people more than yesterday. Dar le Cumann Altraí agus Ban Cabhrach na hÉireann go raibh 654 othar ag fanacht le leaba a fháil i mbarda in ospidéil na tíre ar maidin inniu, sin ceithre dhuine dhéag níos mó ná inné. 446 of the patients were in emergency departments, and the other 208 were on trolleys or in chairs in wards. Is i rannóga éigeandála a bhí 446 de na hothair, agus is ar thralaithe nó i gcathaoireacha i mbardaí a bhí an 208 eile. The situation was worst in Limerick University Hospital this morning, where 110 people were waiting for a bed. Is in Ospidéal Ollscoile Luimnigh is measa a bhí an scéal ar maidin, áit a raibh 110 duine ag fanacht le leaba. Subsequently, 88 people were waiting for a bed in University Hospital, Cork; 65 people in University Hospital, Galway; and half a century at the University Hospital, Letterkenny. Ina dhiaidh sin, bhí 88 duine ag fanacht le leaba in Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Corcaigh; 65 duine in Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Gaillimh; agus leathchéad in Ospidéal na Ollscoile, Leitir Ceannain. In addition to that, eleven children between the three children's hospitals in Dublin were waiting for a bed. I dteannta an mhéid sin, bhí aon leanbh déag idir na trí ospidéal leanaí i mBaile Átha Cliath ag fanacht le leaba. As bad as that was, it was even worse yesterday, when 27 children were involved. Dá dhonacht sin, ba mheasa fós inné é, tráth a bhí 27 leanbh i gceist. The nurses are demanding that non-urgent elective operations be postponed in light of the crisis and priority given to the patients arriving at the emergency departments. Tá na haltraí ag éileamh obráidí roghnacha neamhphráinneacha a chur ar atráth i bhfianaise na géarchéime agus tús áite a thabhairt do na hothair atá ag teacht chuig na rannóga éigeandála. Damien McCallion from the Health Service Executive said that the prevalence of respiratory diseases is at this time of year every year, which is the calmest of the crisis. Dúirt Damien McCallion ó Fheidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte gurb é leitheadúlacht na ngalar riospráide a bhíonn ann an tráth seo bliana gach uile bhliain, gurb é is siocair leis an ngéarchéim. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar accepted this afternoon that far too many people were waiting too long to get a bed in a ward. Ghlac an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar leis tráthnóna go raibh i bhfad an iomarca daoine ag fanacht rófhada le leaba a fháil i mbarda. On the contrary, he claimed that great progress had been made in several years and drew attention to the additional 20,000 people who had been recruited by the health services from 2020. Os a choinne sin, mhaígh sé go raibh an-dul chun cinn déanta le roinnt blianta agus tharraing sé aird ar an 20,000 duine breise a bhí earcaithe ag na seirbhísí sláinte ó 2020. The Taoiseach also said that Ireland is among the five countries with the highest number of nurses per person in the population. Dúirt an Taoiseach freisin go bhfuil Éire i measc na gcúig thír ina bhfuil an líon is mó altraí in aghaidh gach duine sa daonra. RTÉ News and Current Affairs Nuacht agus Cúrsaí Reatha RTÉ

There are 651 patients in hospitals across the country still waiting for a bed, according to the latest daily figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association. Tá 651 othar in ospidéil ar fud na tíre fós ag fanacht le leaba, de réir na bhfigiúirí laethúla is déanaí ó Chumann Altraí agus Ban Cabhrach na hÉireann. 495 of the patients are in emergency departments and the other 156 are in wards. Is i rannóga éigeandála atá 495 de na hothair agus is i mbardaí atá an 156 eile. The situation is worst at Limerick University Hospital, where 116 people are waiting for a bed - 56 of them in the emergency department and the other 60 in wards. Is in Ospidéal Ollscoile Luimnigh is measa atá an scéal, áit a bhfuil 116 duine ag fanacht le leaba – 56 acu sa rannóg éigeandála agus an 60 eile i mbardaí. Yesterday, there were 104 patients in that hospital waiting for a bed. Arú inné, bhí 104 othar san ospidéal sin ag fanacht le leaba. In light of the latest crisis, all operations at the hospital have been postponed – apart from time-sensitive elective operations – and priority is being given to children and the elderly. I bhfianaise na géarchéime is déanaí, tá gach obráid san ospidéal curtha ar atráth – seachas obráidí roghnacha a bhfuil práinn ama leo – agus tá tús áite á thabhairt do pháistí agus do sheanóirí. The management of the hospital said that 252 patients came to the emergency department between 8 o'clock yesterday morning and 8 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Dúirt bainistíocht an ospidéil gur tháinig 252 othar chuig an rannóg éigeandála idir 8 a chlog ar maidin inné agus 8 a chlog tráthnóna inné. According to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association, there are 74 patients at University Hospital, Cork waiting for a bed; 52 in University Hospital, Galway; and 47 at University Hospital, Tallaght. De réir na bhfigiúirí ó Chumann Altraí agus Ban Cabhrach na hÉireann, tá 74 othar in Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Corcaigh ag fanacht le leaba; 52 in Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Gaillimh; agus 47 in Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Tamhlacht. In that regard, there are 27 children in the three children's hospitals in Dublin waiting for a bed. Ina cheann sin, tá 27 leanbh sna trí ospidéal leanaí i mBaile Átha Cliath ag fanacht le leaba. The General Secretary of the Association Phil Ní Sheaghdha claimed that things have once again gotten out of control and said that the nurses are looking for an urgent meeting with the new head of the Health Service Executive to discuss the situation. Mhaígh Ard-Rúnaí an Chumainn Phil Ní Sheaghdha go bhfuil cúrsaí imithe ó smacht arís eile agus dúirt go bhfuil na haltraí ag lorg cruinniú práinneach le ceannasaí nua Fheidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte chun an scéal a phlé. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/2pgufm28 Contact: irishlingos@gmail.com Hospitals across the State under tremendous pressure today - Union. Ospidéil ar fud an Stáit faoi bhrú as cuimse inniu - Ceardchumann. Hospitals across the State are under immense pressure, says the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association. Tá ospidéil ar fud an Stáit faoi bhrú as cuimse, a deir Cumann Altraí agus Ban Cabhrach na hÉireann. The Association says they have never seen so much overcrowding at this time of year. Deir an Cumann nach bhfaca siad an oiread seo de róphlódú ariamh ag an tráth seo 'bhliana. The union said that all hospitals, large and small, are struggling as it becomes difficult for them to provide safe health care to patients. Dúirt an ceardchumann go bhfuil na hospidéil uilig, idir bheag agus mhór, ag streachailt agus é ag dul dian orthu cúram sláinte sábháilte a chur ar fáil d'othair. The Association wants private and public hospitals to function as one system in order to reduce the pressure and ensure that the situation does not get worse. Tá an Cumann ag iarraidh go bhfeidhmeoidh ospidéil phríobháideacha agus phoiblí mar aon chóras amháin ar mhaithe leis an bhrú a laghdú agus chun a chinntiú nach rachaidh an scéal chun donais. The Society's General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha said that any emergency policy "must be implemented immediately because it will not be possible to deal with the emergency in a safe way if the conditions in the hospitals get worse." Dúirt Ardrúnaí an Chumainn Phil Ni Sheaghdha go gcaithfear aon bheartas éigeandála "is gá a chur i bhfeidhm láithreach bonn mar nach mbeifear in ann plé leis an éigeandáil ar bhealach sábháilte má éiríonn cúrsaí sna h-ospidéil níos measa." It is not normal for the number of patients in hospitals to be this high that 570 people would be so ill that they would need hospital care and there would not be enough beds for them, said Phil Ní Sheaghdha. Ní gnáthach leis an líon othair in ospidéil a bheith chomh hard seo go mbeadh 570 duine chomh tinn sin go mbeadh gá acu le cúram ospidéil agus nach mbeadh dóthain leapacha ann dóibh, a dúirt Phil Ní Sheaghdha. Early in the new year the hospitals get busy but the Association says they have never seen this much overcrowding. Go luath san athbhliain a éiríonn na h-ospidéil gnóthach ach deir an Cumann nach bhfaca siad a oiread seo de róphlódú ariamh. "Sick people have no choice but to go to the Emergency Departments of hospitals because they are unable to get an appointment with their family doctor," said the leader of the union. "Níl aon rogha ag daoine tinne ach dul chuig Rannóga Éigeandála na n-ospidéal mar nach bhfuil siad ábalta coinne a fháil lena ndochtúir teaghlaigh," a dúirt ceannaire an cheardchumainn. The Health Executive has decided to help GPs provide additional clinics to attend to patients to ease the pressure on the health system. Tá sé socraithe ag an Fheidhmeannacht Sláinte go gcabhróidh siad le dochtúirí teaghlaigh clinicí breise a chur ar fáil le freastal ar othair chun an brú ar an chóras sláinte a mhaolú.

"Rannóga éigeandála ospidéil na tíre faoin mbrú is mó riamh". The accident and emergency departments of the country's hospitals are under the greatest pressure they have ever experienced, says a new report from the Health Information and Quality Authority. Tá rannóga timpistí agus éigeandála ospidéil na tíre faoin mbrú is mó a bhí riamh orthu, a deirtear i dtuarascáil nua ón Údarás um Fhaisnéis agus Cáilíocht Sláinte. As evidence of how bad things are, the report draws attention to the case of one patient in Limerick University Hospital who was waiting 116 hours for a bed - that's almost five days. Mar sholaoid ar chomh dona agus atá cúrsaí, tarraingítear aird sa tuarascáil ar chás othair amháin in Ospidéal Ollscoile Luimnigh a bhí ag fanacht 116 uair an chloig le leaba - sin beagnach cúig lá. That is one of the worst cases, however, and the Authority says that it is rare for patients to wait more than 80 hours with a bed. Sin ceann de na cásanna is measa, áfach, agus deir an tÚdarás gurb annamh othair ag fanacht níos mó ná 80 uair an chloig le leaba. As with triage care, it is said that patients can wait between one and three and a half hours, although not often. Mar le cúram triáiseála de, deirtear gur féidir le hothair a bheith ag fanacht idir uair agus trí huaire an chloig go leith, cé nach minic sin. Triage care is a preliminary assessment of the patient's needs and, of course, the patient's health can deteriorate if there is too much delay, says the Authority. Réamh-mheasúnú ar riachtanais an othair is ea cúram triáiseála agus, dar ndóigh, is féidir le sláinte an othair dul in olcas má bhíonn moill rómhór ann, a deir an tÚdarás. To top it off, it is said, there are not enough beds - or indeed enough staff - to prevent the lack of community health services. Mar bharr ar an donas, a deirtear, níl dóthain leapacha ann - ná dóthain foirne go deimhin - gan an easpa seirbhísí sláinte pobail a bhac. The report is based on an inspection of seven accident and emergency departments, namely Cavan and Monaghan Hospital; University Hospital, Cork; Limerick University Hospital; Mayo University Hospital; Sligo University Hospital; Saint Michael's Hospital, Dun Laoghaire; and St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin. Tá an tuarascáil bunaithe ar chigireacht a rinneadh ar sheacht gcinn de rannóga timpistí agus éigeandála, mar atá, Ospidéal an Chabháin agus Mhuineacháin; Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Corcaigh; Ospidéal Ollscoile Luimnigh; Ospidéal Ollscoile Mhaigh Eo; Ospidéal Ollscoile Shligigh; Ospidéal Naomh Micheál, Dún Laoghaire; agus Ospidéal Ollscoile Naomh Uinseann, Baile Átha Cliath. According to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association, 638 patients were waiting for a bed in hospitals across the country this morning. De réir figiúirí ó Chumann Altraí agus Ban Cabhrach na hÉireann, bhí 638 othar ag fanacht le leaba in ospidéil ar fud na tíre ar maidin inniu. 75 of them were at Limerick University Hospital; 68 were in University Hospital, Cork; 51 in Letterkenny University Hospital; and 47 in Tallaght University Hospital. Is in Ospidéal Ollscoile Luimnigh a bhí 75 acu; bhí 68 in Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Corcaigh; 51 in Ospidéal Ollscoile Leitir Ceanainn; agus 47 in Ospidéal Ollscoile Thamhlachta.

STRIKING FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE: Episode 2/ Trade UnionsPresenter: Vivien Langford Producer: Andy Britt Trade Unions are responding to the global call for action on September 20th. Will you join them? This will be 3 days before the UN Emergency Climate Summit in N.Y. Greta Thunberg will arrive by sailboat bringing with her the hopes of many children unable to vote.Naomi Klein starts the show with a question "What are climate jobs?".Dr Colin Long answers. He is the Just Transition Officer for the Victorian Trades Hall Council. STRIKING in Australia involves harsher penalties than in any other OECD country. But workers from many unions are up for the task of a transition whose scale and cost is unprecedented. They want jobs they can be proud of but do not want to be abandoned as in previous restructuring.  Dr Janet Roden takes us to the coal and gas communities she visits for the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association. You will be horrified to learn of the impact on babies even born 200km away from the climate changing pollution. She finds community members confused because there is no clear transition plan. "It's just steam" they say. This is highlighted in her research report for the NSWNMA, "Muswellbrook: between eight coal mines and two power stations". We cannot see the climate impact of the emissions from coal stations and gas wells  but the effect on babies and children is witnessed by midwives and nurses every day. She explains why the NSW NMA wants to stand with the children on September 20th. Erima Dall was inspired by the Green Bans and AYCC when she was at university. Now a member of the MUA she drives a crane and is well aware of the tragedies caused by our emissions overseas. She is an eloquent speaker and tells us why  MUA members will join the strike on September 20th. Chris Breen is a teacher and member of the AEU. His article "Lessons we can learn from the last Climate Movement" takes us beyond the vague slogans of " Climate action" and "Just transitions". He wants the climate movement to be on the front foot as BZE is, to find where jobs can be created by a nimble government  e.g. building the first solar thermal plant at Port Augusta or kickstarting the export of renewable energy from the Northern Territory. Thanks to the MUA who hosted the meeting about the September 20th strike, where I met or heard about today's guests. Thanks to Stephen Langford for liaising.

The fourth global Women Deliver conference in May brought nearly 6,000 experts and advocates to Copenhagen to address the health and rights and women and girls, including a small group of young midwives who attended a symposium beforehand. “I went in a little bit skeptical,” says Alix Bacon, president of the Midwives Association of British Columbia and one of 32 women under 35 who received a scholarship to attend, in this week’s podcast. “And I came home a changed woman and a believer.” Bacon said the ability to escape the immediacy of the day-to-day clinical requirements of midwifery and think about how they can grow as a network was invaluable. “There isn't an advocacy component to your midwifery training,” she says, “And this is where the midwifery symposium really shined. It addressed our weaknesses, regulation, research, policy.” In the context of regulation and public funding, midwifery in Canada is relatively new, Bacon says, which puts them in a unique position among wealthy countries to partner with developing countries facing some of the same challenges. They have developed a 30-year roadmap from “zero to functional that we can share with our partners,” for example, she says. One such partnership is with South Sudan and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The “twinning” project matches midwives together with the aim of increasing capacity, “supporting a strengthened, enabled environment for gender-sensitive maternity care.” Partnerships like this are crucial for the world’s newest country, which has among the world’s highest maternal, newborn, and child mortality rates. “Only 15 percent of births are attended by a skilled birth attendant,” Bacon says. The latest renewed violence and mass displacement has “had wide-reaching effects on our ability to implement this project,” she says. They had to pull Canadian staff out of the country in June, but Bacon still believes in the promise of the partnership. “It's about positioning midwives as experts in maternity care,” she says. “And when you're positioned as an expert and supported by the ideal partner, you grab the attention of policymakers locally.” With a global standard of education and the proper policies in place, “midwives can meet 87 percent of the needs of women and children,” says Bacon. “We also happen to be terribly cost-effective, which really makes us a best buy when it comes to maternal newborn child health.” Alix Bacon spoke at the Wilson Center on July 18, 2016.
