Find out more about the Plant Cunning Conference – In-Person in New York – July 24-26, 2026Today, AC & Isaac interview Trista Haggerty, author of When the Dark Mother Calls, about her path into mysticism after a dark night of the soul and two decades of mentoring with a German mystic while traveling to sacred sites in places such as Peru and Ireland. They discuss what makes power spots sacred, stone circles as “acupuncture,” and caves as initiation spaces, plus practices for trusting intuition through body-based discernment. Trista shares her work at Hawk Circle, a couple-hundred-acre land project where she's building stone circle, trails, and a perfumery inspired by Egyptian temple recipes to fund youth nature programs. The conversation also explores fairies, dragons, the “threefold path,” and her upcoming talk at the Plant Cunning Conference (July 24–26) alongside other speakers.01:38 Trista Meets Her Mentor03:31 First Sacred Site Journeys06:21 Earth-Based Mysticism Lessons08:22 What Makes Sites Sacred11:26 Primal Earth Energy Work15:08 Mystic Path and Hidden Teachings19:07 Trusting Intuition in Noise23:51 Hawk Circle Vision and Land29:51 Perfumery and Temple Scents31:49 Essential Oils Impact32:04 Ritual Perfumery Journey33:11 Fairy Lore Explained37:15 Threefold Path Teachings40:14 Dragons and the Land42:08 First Dragon Encounter43:45 Connecting With Dragons47:39 Awakening Landscape Dragons48:38 Dragon Humor and Myths53:31 New Earth Vision56:41 When the Dark Mother Calls

Wowie! So many excellent fragrances to get your noses around in this episode, it was difficult to know where to begin. But with so many to explore we started with a recap of the recent barnstorming success of Barnes Fragrance Fair...We talked through Suzy's choices for her sold-out talk with Alice du Parcq (and if you couldn't go or were there but missed any of the talks: never fear! They were all recorded and will be on the Barnes Fragrance Fair YouTube channel when they're all edited. We'll let you know when they're up, but meanwhile you can watch last year's talks there, including the ‘Top of the morning' show we so loved doing.)Suzy chose:Shloksha Soapy HeartBased in Tunbridge Wells, founder Jay says “Moving from India to the UK in mytwenties, I do miss the immersive sensory joys found in everyday Indian culture.Sourcing and working with traditional Indian materials connects me to mychildhood—scented trips down memory lane!”Opening notes - red mandarin and grapefruitHeart notes - jasmine, ylang ylang, green grass and saffronBase notes – sandalwood, fruity musk, oudh“You slip on your fine silk robe, gorgeously patterned with tropical birds, andquietly pad along the hallway to the bathroom. Glittering beads of water dance in the diffuse light. You perch your hip on the side of the bath as your ears fill pleasantly with theroar and tumble of the cascading water. Your life is very busy and demanding, and you get few opportunities to indulge yourself. But a long, quiet bath is oftenwhat you crave.Your eyes glance along the rich turquoise tiled shelf as you ponder how to scentyour watery sanctuary. Antique crystal jars hold delicately fragrant floralsalts—you carefully lift their lids- one by one - and their enchanting perfumesmingle with the steam. But they're perhaps not exactly what you're in the moodfor.A waxed paper tablet of old-fashioned, handmade soap sits demurely at theend of the shelf. Fresh, brand new and unopened. Your fingertips softly caressthe crackling paper as you carefully unwrap it and the dense, creamy pebbledrops into your silken lap.You dip your hands briefly in the warm bath water and rotate the smooth soap inyour hands. Infused with caramel, tonka, vanilla, and benzoin, this creamy haze lends the amber structure an irresistibleand unforgettable signature. A fragrance that draws you in… and keeps youclose."‘With Ambre Latte, Jordi Fernandez offers a unique and exquisitely refined takeon indulgence. The fragrance unfolds in a vaporous cloud of almond milk, delicately infused with roasted tonka bean. Indulgence settles in — irresistibleyet perfectly controlled — as a luscious dulce de leche caramel melts into theenveloping softness of vanilla, benzoin and white musks.Very soon, the fragrance reveals its duality. Beneath the milky caress emergesan intensely addictive woody-amber alchemy. Ambrofix, Georgywood,Akigalawood and white sandalwood structure the composition, infusing it withdepth, sophistication and modernity. They extend the trail with sensual richness, leaving an unforgettable imprint — the perfect balance between gourmandiseand addiction.'Escentric Molecules Cologne OneSuzy described this as feeling like a Cologne that's been whizzed up in a SodaStream machine! The brand says: ‘Cologne One captures the freshness of a ginand tonic in a single, sparkling gesture: effervescent, bright, unmistakably clean. The fragrance lives in its top notes: juniper for the gin, lime and citrus for lift, atouch of bergamot and mandarin, a whisper of ginger for a delicate spiciness, and a hint of cucumber's neutrality to enhance the crispness without becomingliteral. It is freshness concentrated, transparent, and immediate. The heart remains understated: iris, rose, and hedione offer just enoughstructure to support the top note, allowing the bright citrus and juniper to linger. The dry down is linear, calm, and unobtrusive: Ambroxan, Iso E Super, and atrace of musk. Nothing competes, nothing distracts.“We have a very different approach to fragrance, so our first cologne capturesthe very unique and wonderful freshness of a gin and tonic. I think it's quite newwith that sort of freshness. It's the idea of the sparkling, effervescent gin andtonic first scent, this sort of your nose in the drink,” says perfumer Geza Schoen.Cologne One is a cologne reimagined by Escentric Molecules: 15% concentrationfor lasting freshness without leaving an overwhelmingly fragrant impression. It isrefreshing, refined, and gender-neutral....

When art & design turn their ambitions toward technology and olfaction, how much does a machine powered by algorithms, AI, or both, challenge an industry known for gatekeeping (and upcharging), and how much does it supplant the craftsmanship and skill of a perfumer? We discuss such iffiness after experiencing a custom scent-making installation that questions, "What if every human could create their own scent?"[What we smell like today: Prada Infusion de Santal Chai, "Forever Yong" made by Sable using Algorithmic Perfumery]

Meet Elodie Durande, a French Perfumer whose journey into the captivating world of scents began in a quaint countryside village in Normandy, France, where she spent her childhood. With a creative mind and a rational scientist's brain, perfumery emerged as the perfect fusion of both her passions. Elodie's academic journey led her to study chemistry before she embarked on a transformative two-year Perfumery course at the University of Montpellier, France. During this pivotal period, she immersed herself in the fragrant world of Grasse, working as an intern. Fate intervened when she encountered Master Perfumer François Robert on the Île Sainte-Marguerite. From that moment, François became her mentor, guiding her on the path to realizing her dream of becoming a Perfumer. In February 2014, Elodie commenced her journey with Quintessence Fragrances as an intern. Swiftly rising through the ranks, she joined the evaluation team within six months. Three years later, an opportunity to continue her training as a Junior Perfumer presented itself, with François as her mentor. In January 2019, she officially earned the title of Perfumer. Elodie finds joy in the perpetual process of learning. A self-proclaimed globetrotter, she draws inspiration from her travels, reveling in the diverse cultures and natural wonders our planet has to offer. Her unique ability lies in finding beauty in the ordinary, turning the "ugly" into a masterpiece through the transformative art of perfumery. With a palette boasting hundreds of ingredients, Elodie is captivated by the alchemical process of discovering the hidden charm of scents that may challenge conventional notions. She perceives scents not just as fragrances but as textures, shapes, and colors, infusing each creation with a multidimensional allure. Her mission is to craft fragrances that transcend the olfactory senses, eliciting emotions and transporting individuals to distant landscapes or cherished memories. Elodie Durande has been the nose behind Ffern since 2018. Together with Owen Mears, the founder of Ffern, and his sister Emily Cameron, the creative director, the team conceive and develop each seasonal scent. As Ffern's in-house head nose, Elodie is fuelled by a passion for experimental and innovative natural perfumery. Beyond perfumery, Elodie's eclectic tastes manifest in an array of hobbies, from cooking and pottery to leather work and acroyoga. Her life rhythm is complemented by a love for music, series, films, and the serene embrace of paddleboarding. This week Karen follows on from the conversation she had about learning to evaluate your perfumes. She covers something that is done as a matter of course in the industry. It's something a lot of people, especially when they're new, don't really get - making more than one version of your fragrance. Or, in industry terms, making a mod. Karen explains why learning to be patient and tweaking your perfume gradually is an essential skillset and how to perfect the art of iteration. KEY TAKEAWAYS Feeling disappointed with your first perfume draft is normal; instead of interpreting your setbacks as a lack of talent, treat each version as a learning step that even experienced perfumers face. Change only one element at a time and refrain from altering your original batch. Record each change and its impact on a spreadsheet so you can clearly track what makes things better or makes things worse. If you reach a creative block after many iterations, it's fine to set a project aside and return later with a fresh perspective. Sometimes, solutions only emerge with time and new experience. Perfumery is a journey of constant learning and self-improvement. Make use of community resources and classes as needed, and keep up the habit of practice and iteration. BEST MOMENTS “The truth is nobody makes a perfect perfume in one go….you are creating your first draft.” “Without a clear direction (a brief) you are not going to be able to evaluate anything - if you can't evaluate it, you are not going to be able to improve it.” “The whole point of creating mods, or iterations of a fragrance, is comparison.” VALUABLE RESOURCES In-Person Classes: https://www.karengilbert.co.uk/studio-classes Fragrance For Skincare Course: https://www.onlineperfumeschool.com/creating-fragrance-for-skincare-products-online-course Last week´s evaluating your perfume episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/evaluating-your-fragrances-how-to-judge-your-scent/id1693602939?i=1000738045728 Getting Started Guide: https://www.karengilbert.co.uk/podcast-getting-started-guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind: https://www.karengilbert.co.uk/artisan-perfumery-mastermind ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. What happens when the romance of perfume meets the reality of child labor? In this episode, Tanya speaks with BBC producer Natasha Cox, director of Perfume's Dark Secret — a documentary uncovering the supply chain behind Egyptian jasmine and the hidden cost of luxury fragrance. We cover:• What 3 weeks in the jasmine fields revealed• Why audits and “tick-box” ethics don't protect workers• How perfumer Christophe Laudamiel helped break the silence • And why stories like this matter — even when change is slowPlus, Natasha shares:
Last week, in one of Karen's classes, a student was surprised to learn that some information she had received from ChatGPT was inaccurate. With AI becoming increasingly common in perfume making - from formulations to safety advice - this week, Karen is offering an overview of how AI fits into the world of fragrance, where it can be helpful, where it falls short, and how you can get the most out of this ever-evolving tool. KEY TAKEAWAYS How exactly do models like ChatGPT work? Where do they get their information from, and how do they differ from search engines? Karen explains it all. Any answer you get from ChatGPT sounds 100% correct and authoritative. As Karen explains, not only is there a reason for this, but it's also one of its major flaws. A lot of the big perfume houses have been very vocal recently about incorporating AI into their formulation process. However, as Karen points out, it's not in the same way that you might be using it. However, despite its flaws, AI can be a very useful tool in some areas. Karen lays out some of the ways in which AI can help you. BEST MOMENTS “ChatGPT doesn't evaluate credibility or cross-check sources to see what is accurate.” “It isn't just incorrect, it's wrong with confidence.” “If the AI models have been trained by mistakes on the internet, then you can start to understand where the mistakes are coming from.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. This week on the show, Karen is finally addressing an issue that has been annoying her for years - the obsession with extreme longevity of a fragrance. There is a theory that the longer a perfume lasts, the more desirable and worthwhile it is - but Karen is calling that a myth. In this week's episode, Karen is here to explain that just because something doesn't last, that doesn't mean it's bad. Instead, she argues that perfume is meant to be savoured in personal moments—it's something for yourself, not for others. The real challenge lies in how to embrace this idea during the creative process without sacrificing your work. KEY TAKEAWAYS Recently, consumers and perfumers have begun to confuse durability with quality. Karen breaks down why she thinks this is happening and why it is bad for the fragrance industry. Karen explains why the beauty of a perfume is not in its longevity but in the smaller moments that make you realise why you're wearing it in the first place. When somebody makes a scent they love, but doesn't last a long time, they try to add materials in a desperate attempt to create longevity. Karen explains why this never works and why it will destroy your scent. Adding materials that fade away can be an invaluable tool to creating a unique scent. Karen explains why this is and how to achieve this. BEST MOMENTS “Perfume isn't a marathon, it's a moment, an experience. Something that you enjoy whilst it's happening.” “The obsession with longevity is drowning out the subtle approach.” “Don't start with longevity as the goal. Start with the perfume you want to create.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Perfume Making 101 Masterclass Materials Mastery Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. VYS0045 | This Is Not The End Times; This Is A Rescue Mission - Vayse to Face with Bob Cluness - Show Notes Even more bewildered than usual, Hine and Buckley welcome writer, researcher, academic and DJ, Bob Cluness to Vayse. Bob's areas of interest include cultural studies, aesthetics, phenomenology, film studies, the weird and the eerie. Hine and Buckley nod along and try to keep up as Bob showers them in interconnecting concepts and fascinating insights with torrential force: What is hyperstition? Who were the CCRU? How does accelerationism work? Was Chaos Magick a revolutionary movement or an emanation of the emerging neoliberal capitalist system of the time? And exactly what is Nick Land's problem... (Recorded 29 July 2024) Thanks to Bob for patiently explaining everything and thanks to Keith for the mammoth effort in show noting this one! In this episode, Frauke sits down with San Francisco perfumer Dannielle Sergent to talk about the creative intersection of Perfumery, Painting, and Architecture. They begin with a fun word association game to dig deeper into the creative mind. Dannielle then shares how she got started as a painter, explains the concept of “fat over lean”, and her approach to painting. She then reveals what led you to pursue architecture, explains different ways you can manipulate a design using materials, light and space, and what role scent can play in design. Dannielle then shares how she got into Perfumery, talks about “painting with scent,” and how perfume creation is different from architecture and painting. Finally, she gives her perspective on what painting, architecture, and perfumery share in common and how she brings the disciplines together. In this episode, Frauke sits down with animistic perfumer Mauricio Garcia to talk about the spiritual and magical parts of Perfumery. Mauricio shares his childhood experiences with scent and how it shaped his connection to the environment. They discuss the societal disconnect from Nature and the need to return to a more symbiotic relationship with Mother Earth. Mauricio explains what he believes our role and connection to Nature is, and shares what he means by the “botanical power of fragrance.” They then discuss the more subtle, intuitive meaning of spirituality, non-religious spiritual systems, and why perfume creation is such a spiritual (and magical) process. Mauricio shares how he got interested in Perfumery, and explains why he believes scents are portals of memories. He also reveals how scents can be offerings for intentions we want to manifest, and shares how to anoint yourself. Importantly, Mauricio tells us about The Coalition of Sustainable Perfumery he co-created, which aims to be a hub and conversation starter for thoughtful and intentional Perfumery. This conversation will fill you with joy and inspiration for a side of Perfumery that's not often talked about. Dr Luca Turin is a biophysicist, writer, and perfume connoisseur whose work on fragrances seems to suggest that we don't smell molecules, per se - we smell the complex vibrations of an atomic structure. Turin came to be convinced of this model for olfaction at the expense of the standard model of receptors binding smell molecules just on the basis of their shape due to a prediction he made about the smell of sulfur. If the pungent odor of rotten eggs and brimstone was due to the vibrational frequency of the sulfur atom attached to the molecule, then any other atom with a similar vibrational frequency, no matter its shape, should also smell of sulfur. This week on the show Karen is joined by Liz Moores, founder of Papillon Perfumery. When Liz started her brand she was taking a huge gamble. Self-taught, inexperienced and jumping into an already heavily populated marketplace, Liz's view was “I've got nothing to lose.” If her venture didn't work out, she was prepared to sell her initial batch of fragrances at a car boot sale to recoup her investment. However, after some early positive reviews, Liz found great success and her brand has grown from strength to strength. In this interview with Karen, Liz details her unique approach to business and perfume making, how to deal with rumours and gossip and inspires you to take a leap of faith. KEY TAKEAWAYS Like most perfumers, Liz was drawn into setting up her own business through her love of fragrance. After some initial high-praising reviews from bloggers, she was approached by retailers who wanted her perfume. She talks about how this early success has influenced her overall approach to business. Setting up your own business can be daunting, but it can also give you incredible freedom. Liz talks about how she embraced that freedom with her marketing and creations and how ‘being naive' enough to do this has led to her success. In agreement with Karen, Liz believes that it is essential to have a strong story behind any scent you are creating. She details her process in creating stories and why, sometimes, it is essential to take a step back and not rush the process. Karen and Liz discuss how the perfume industry has exploded over the last ten years as perfumery has turned from an artform to a consumer trend. How this has flooded the market with thousands of perfumes and how you can still stand out in the market if you have the right approach. BEST MOMENTS “Create fragrances that you love yourself, everything after that is a bonus.” “If you don't have a strong story all you're doing is chucking materials together and there's no guarantee that the process will work.” “It is crucial, as an artisan perfumer, to forge strong relationships with your suppliers and customers. Your reputation is everything.” EPISODE LINKS Papillon Perfumery Website Papillon Perfumery Instagram VALUABLE RESOURCES Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. On its bad days, Pittsburgh has some weird smells – rotten eggs, from pollution along the Mon Valley. That urine scent from all the ginkgo trees. And sometimes when it rains, it smells like wet dog. But these aren't the scents that local perfume makers think should define the city. We're bringing back a conversation with City Cast's Elizabeth Kauma… to talk about a few Pittsburgh scents that hit all the right notes. We always cite our sources: We spoke with artisanal perfumer Darren Alan, fragrance journalist Patric Rhys, and Scott Kindberg, the artist behind 5:55 Perfumery. Another local perfumer we mention is 837 North. Local journalist Patric Rhys covered the history of fragrance. Loved this episode about scents?
