----------------------------------- SEGUICI SU: - Web Page: https://www.nippop.it - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nippopbologna - Twitter: https://twitter.com/NipPopOfficial - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nippopofficial - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/nippopbologna

Katie and Sally discuss “Beautiful Darkness” (2014) by Fabien Vehlmann and Kerascoët, an adorable tale about some cute little sprites who live in — DEAR GOD. Topics discussed include Tales from the Crypt, Red Wall, Red Bull, working with watercolor, Hans Christian Andersen, Miyazaki, and Sally presents a theory about artists and noses. Next time: “Orochi: The Perfect Edition, vol. 1” by Kazuo Umezu. (We say Moyoco Anno's “In Clothes Called Fat” is next in this episode, but are putting that on hold to celebrate the release of the new Umezu volume which snuck up on us!) I said this in the latest episode of the Taiiku Podcast's post, and retweeting things from the Manga In Your Ears Twitter account, but Black Lives Matter. Please donate to organizations if you can, and keep tweeting, call your legislature, protest, and vote. And through it all, stay safe; there's still a pandemic on. This episode, we're talking about Moyoco Anno's In Clothes Called Fat published by Vertical and Hikaru Nakamura's Saint Young Men published by Kodansha. The song you heard at the top of the episode was "YMCA" by the Village People, a song I forgot included the lyrics "young man" and assumed that was just a completely separate song from YMCA. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen's writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. Check out Helen's review of Saint Young Men over at The OASG. Listen Show notes: 0:46 - We talk about In Clothes Called Fat! 12:07 - We talk about Saint Young Men! Next time is Buddha and Beastars!

Episode lucky number seven, unlike the movie Lucky Number Slevin, which is an alright movie and has Lucy Liu, but anyway. The Dodgers and Astros are in the midst of the World Series as I type this and I’m missing the hot action (seriously, it’s 90+ degrees in Los Angeles) as I type this, so let’s get on with it! This time, we’re talking about Moyoco Anno’s Insufficient Direction published by Vertical Comics and Takako Shimura’s Sweet Blue Flowers published by Viz Media. The song you heard at the top of the episode, and that I forgot to introduce, is “Aoi Hana” by Kukikodan from the Sweet Blue Flowers anime. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen’s writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. Listen Show notes: 0:41 – We talk about Insufficient Direction! 10:46 – We talk about Sweet Blue Flowers! Next time is Pluto and Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches! We will revisit Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind at some point in the future because that manga is good, but just gotta get all our hands on it.
It’s a podcast crossover as Trash Twins co-host Katie Skelly shows up to talk about Moyoco Anno’s Insufficient Direction. Then Joe and Chris talk about Dominique Goblet’s Pretending Is Lying. It’s a short episode but we actually got decent audio recording equipment for once. Don’t expect that to ever happen again.
For July's manga episode, Shea and Derek discuss two distinctly different titles. They begin by looking at Naoki Urasawa's Monster series published through Viz Media. The fifth volume of the new Perfect Editions was just released last week, so the guys thought this would be a great opportunity to introduce listeners to this dramatic saga. Monster is the story of a brilliant young surgeon, Dr. Kenzō Tenma, who's accused of murder and then goes on the lam to find the real killer: a boy that he had perviously saved from a traumatic head wound. Tenma's search for the enigmatic and elusive figure, now growing into young adulthood, becomes the driving force of the narrative, with Urasawa introducing a variety of characters and unlikely scenarios along the way. The itinerant nature of this series reminded Derek of the old The Fugitive TV series starring David Janssen. And Shea, in fact, thought that the episodic feel of the title began to wear thin as the story progressed, with Urasawa introducing diverse characters in an almost formulaic manner so as to keep teasing out the drama. But this is a highly engaging series with clean, detailed line drawing and rarely flagging momentum. Next, the guys turn from seinen to josei with Moyoco Anno's In Clothes Called Fat (Vertical). This is a one-volume story about eating disorders, body image, and the dark side of fashion consciousness on young women. Anno herself comes from a fashion background, and her insights on cultural psychology are the underlying bedrock of this narrative. In fact, both Shea and Derek are highly impressed by the ways in which Anno gets into her characters, adeptly revealing how they think and the complexities driving their actions. Body image isn't the only focus of this story. Anno shows how social pressures, groupthink, and low self-esteem undergird many of our dysfunctional relationships. While Shea likes the book but isn't completely satisfied with its ending -- he feels the pacing shifts too dramatically in the conclusion -- Derek is impressed with Anno's style of narration, allowing characters multiple modes of expression that represent the psychological mechanisms at work. In all, this is an important and socially conscious work for male and female readers alike.

Manga review of Happy Mania Volume 3 by Moyoco Anno. Translated by Shirley Kubo. Adapted by Leah Ginsberg. Originally published in Japan by Shodensha. Published in US by Tokyopop, $9.99, Rated Mature 18+. Shigeta finally found a nice guy in the form of her ex co-worker, Takahashi, and even discovered that he was attending the prestigious Tokyo University. They even had sex last volume, but almost immediately afterward Takahashi announced that he was going to the US to study. Just when Shigeta had thought the man of her dreams had arrived on a slightly nerdy white horse! Without Takahashi in her immediate vicinity, Shigeta's too numerous to count psychoses begin to surface. She begins to doubt his faithfulness and worries that he will forget her because Takahashi is going to be away for 6 months. She soon begins to fall for a young ceramic artist named Goro who has some work on display in an exhibition at the department store where Shigeta works. As we have seen so often, Shigeta lets herself get absorbed by her obsession for a guy, at the expense of her survival and a previously existing relationship. She even convinces herself to quit her job and become a ceramic apprentice just to get closer to Goro. Just when I had begun to believe that Shigeta had matured a bit and gotten a clue last volume, she destroys any progress she had made in her love life. She has a very fragile psyche. As soon as she doesn't have a guy fawning over her or constantly calling her, she gets insecure. It's almost like she uses sex to remind herself that she is desirable. Without the continuous stream of bedded guys, she has to look at the hollow void within herself. I don't know if Moyoco Anno is simply chronicling the comical misadventures of a young single Japanese woman or critiquing the never ending quest to seek self-fulfillment in a manner that will never attain it. Shigeta keeps on looking for the antidote to her loneliness in guys. She never seems to understand that she needs to improve herself and her own life situation before she goes barging into other people's. She's on the ultimate ego trip, which in turn makes this series funny and sad at the same time. My Grade: B-
Manga review of Happy Mania Volume 2 by Moyoco Anno. Translated by Shirley Kubo. Adapted by Leah Ginsberg. Originally published in Japan by Shodensha. Published in US by Tokyopop, $9.99, Rated Mature 18+. Shigeta has made a New Year's resolution. She's decided to give up on guys and love and focus all of her attention on her work. Uh, the thing is, she doesn't have a JOB! She got fired from her job at the bookstore last volume for missing too many days. Just when she's filled with the utmost optimism she discovers that her wallet, which had all her money, has been stolen. And then her roommate, Fuku, tells Shigeta that she's getting married and that she's moving out at the end of the month. So Shigeta's life is pretty screwed up at the moment. The only thing for it is to ask her mom if she can borrow some money. We find out that Shigeta is seen as a loser by her family since she hasn't got an education, doesn't have a decent job, and has yet to get married. But her mom does have a guy in mind for Shigeta. Meanwhile, Takahashi, the one guy that actually cares about Shigeta, decides he's just getting in her way, and that he has to leave the picture if she's ever to find her true love. Ok, I still believe Shigeta is a complete idiot. By the age of 24 I think someone would figure out that love is not just sex and vice versa. But I guess that's still pretty young, but come on, get your head together, Shigeta! She does seem to be making some progress as she at least TRIES to convince herself that life is not just about getting a boyfriend. It's also about being able to be independent and taking care of yourself. Too bad she doesn't really have a reason to be disciplined. She's always falling back on people, like her mother or Fuku. I think Fuku really does care for her, but what can she do? You can't coddle someone forever. Shigeta is gonna have to learn to be a responsible adult. She does begin to at least entertain the idea of having Takahashi as a boyfriend in this volume as she finds out there is more to him than just the total nerd image. My grade: B
Podcast manga review of Happy Mania Volume 1 by Moyoco Anno. Translated by Shirley Kubo. Adapted by Leah Ginsberg. Originally published in Japan by Shodensha. Published in US by Tokyopop, $9.99, Rated Mature 18+. From the back cover: Watch out, Bridget Jones-- here comes Shigeta, a 24 year old woman-about-town who is obsessed with the right man. The only problem is that the guys she meets are all duds, not studs. Case in point: Takahashi, a geeky co-worker who is head over heels for our heroine. But she'd rather eat nails than be with that loser! After Shigeta reads her love horoscope in a magazine, she's convinced that the right guy is just around the corner. But the next guy she meets just wants to bonk instead of bond. When Shigeta's doomed romance comes to its inevitable conclusion, she runs to her best friend for solace and a much-needed reality check. But it's not long before another Mr. Wrong enters the picture, and Shigeta is hooked all over again! They say love happens when you least expect it-- but if you expect it 24/7, then what? Join Shigeta and her gal pals in their hilarious hunt for love, romance, and together-forever commitment.
