Explaining History (explaininghistory) (explaininghistory)

There are two main ways that historians have conceived of the causes of the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, both as a struggle between liberalism and authoritarianism and between a people's socialism and a new rising state capitalism. This episode explores the arguments of Yueran Zhang, who suggests that there is a different explanation that can be understood from the motivations of the students and workers who stood up to the regime. Hong Kong's history is being revised and erased - it's early origins, colonial legacy, post 1997 handover period and the crucial years since the mass 2019 democracy protests are being uprooted, overturned and rewritten by a government guided by the ruling Communist Party in Beijing. This 'rewriting' of history is being enforced in schools, universities, libraries, the local media and online. This process has seen library shelves raided, museums closed for 'review', art galleries censored, media archives wiped, commemorations and memorials banned. Every department of government seems affected - library users asked to scour the shelves for 'banned' books, the arts sector to purge itself of 'anti-China elements', the annual commemorations of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre shut down. Democracy activists, authors of children's books, students, and newspaper owners have been jailed for holding contradictory views, telling alternative narratives. All in the few years since 2019 and Covid-19. Hong Kong is a changed place - a place where memory wars are being fought, where history and your interpretation of it can lead to long prison sentences or exile.

Most of the slaughters atrocities that communist governments worldwide perpetrated on their own people in the 20th century weren't viewed in real-time. Tiananmen Square was the first time Americans clearly witnessed the difference between a Christian country that values life and a Communist country that values totalitarian control by any means necessary. If we fail to remember the massacre and learn the lessons of history, America could soon be doing the exact same things openly in cities across our land. When big government feels it is losing control, it will do anything it can to maintain its power. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/curtisbowers/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/curtisbowers/support

It's Wednesday, June 5th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Tiananmen Square massacre anniversary Yesterday was the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in China. In the weeks leading up to the massacre in 1989, students were leading pro-democracy protests in Beijing. In response, the Communist Chinese government forcibly put down the protests, killing hundreds if not thousands. China's military also arrested leaders in the underground church which had fueled the protests.  Persecution of Christians in Hong Kong Speaking of China, the country's persecution of Christians continues and is spreading to Hong Kong.  Since 2020, China has extended control over Hong Kong. This has led to the arrest of church leaders and the closure of some religious groups. Many Christians have left Hong Kong for the United Kingdom, making the Chinese church the fastest growing one in Britain.  Hong Kong Christians put out a commemorative prayer for the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Despite authorities banning candlelight vigils, the prayer says, "Let us, in the great light of the Lord's amazing grace, light a candle in the depths of our souls, to continue their unfinished aspirations in the prayers and shadows, never to be lost or forgotten. O Lord! Let there be light in our hearts.” In Matthew 5:14, Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” United Kingdom blocks puberty blockers Last Wednesday, the United Kingdom issued new restrictions on puberty blockers for children in England, Wales, and Scotland.  The emergency ban lasts from June 3 to September 3, 2024. During the timeframe, doctors cannot prescribe the transgender drugs to people under 18. The new policy also introduced indefinite restrictions to the prescribing of these drugs by primary care providers in England's National Health Service.  Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Biden caps southern border illegals to 2,500 per day Ahead of the U.S. presidential election, President Joe Biden issued an executive order yesterday to curb illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border. The order limits asylum requests once the average number of daily border encounters hits 2,500. The number of daily encounters is already above that. So, the order is expected to go into effect immediately.  It will stay in effect until the number of daily encounters drops to 1,500 or lower. The last time border encounters were at that level was 2020. Texas and Florida responsible for half of America's new jobs In the last five years, just two states were responsible for over half of new jobs in America. Those states are Texas and Florida.  The conservative states feature lower wages which is attractive to companies wanting to create jobs, and lower cost of living which is attractive to workers. Not surprisingly, many people with remote jobs moved to states, like Florida and Texas, which have a lower cost of living. Meanwhile, liberal states with high wages and cost of living fell out of the top 10 job-creating states. They include California, New York, Washington state, and Massachusetts. California used to be the top job creator between 2014 and 2019. Now, it's at the bottom.  How Indiana cut abortions by 98% The Indiana Department of Health released a report on abortions in the state for the first quarter of 2024. Remarkably, there were only 45 abortions during the first quarter, down from nearly 2,000 during the first quarter of 2023. That's a 98% decrease! Indiana's abortion ban went into effect last August. It outlaws abortions at all stages of pregnancy with some exceptions.   Arkansas had no abortions in 2023 Meanwhile, a report from the Arkansas Department of Health's Vital Statistics found there were no abortions reported during the entirety of last year. The state started enforcing its abortion ban in 2022. Before that, yearly abortions were over 3,000. Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral restored by December after fire The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France was devastated by fire back in 2019. Since then, hundreds of companies and craftsmen have been working to restore the cathedral by December of this year. Last month, workers restored the iconic cross on the cathedral's roof.  A project manager told CBS News it was a miracle that the cross didn't burn a lot. The restored cross spans 40 feet and weighs over 3,000 pounds. In other Notre Dame news, Lego just released a 4,383-piece model of the cathedral. It's the first model of a religious structure the toy company has released since it produced a model church in 1957.  The Worldview: A “five-minute dose of freedom” In response to my request for Worldview listeners to email me at Adam@TheWorldview.com to share what the newscast means to them, I heard from Max Wood in Macon, Georgia. He wrote, “John 8:32 tells us that we shall know the truth and the truth will set us free. June 4 marked the 34th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, in which the Chinese Communist Party put down a pro-democracy protest movement that had bubbled up in Tiananmen Square and throughout mainland China. For many, it served as a stark reminder the brutality of the country that, under the autocratic leadership of Mao Zedong killed between 40 and 80 million of its own people, could still be just as brutal.Tiananmen happened just three years before Benedict Rogers moved to China to begin teaching English. For Rogers, this marked the beginning of a professional career focused on issues in and around China and Hong Kong that saw him work as a journalist in Hong Kong for the first five years after the handover to traveling to China's borders with Myanmar/Burma and North Korea to document the plight of refugees escaping from Beijing-backed satellite dictatorships and then campaigning for human rights in China, especially for Uyghurs, Christians and Falun Gong practitioners, human rights defenders, journalists and dissidents, and the people of Hong Kong.Rogers, who today runs the organization Hong Kong Watch, a watchdog organization which researches and monitors threats to Hong Kong's basic freedoms, the rule of law and autonomy as promised under the ‘one country, two systems' principle which is enshrined in the Basic Law and the Sino-British Joint Declaration, is the author of the new book, “The China Nexus: Thirty Years In and Around the Chinese Communist Party's Tyranny.”In the book, Rogers takes the readers on a journey through some of the leaders and participants in the Human rights activities that China has suppressed since its inception in 1949. He goes on to dispute and lays to rest all of the specious claims by the tyrants in Beijing that all Chinese citizens are equal and are afforded human and civil rights. Currently, the regime is engaged in re-education, cultural assimilation, and multiple genocides, leading to better citizens for China and the world if one believes Chinese officials.Today, Eric Kohn talks with Benedict Rogers about his book, China's history, its rise as a global power, its record on human rights, and what the future holds the Chinese Communist Party and the people under it's thumb. The Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing, China in 1989  is one of the most important, noteworthy tragedies in modern Chinese history. It was the biggest protest against communism rule in over sixty years. But thanks to the consistent suppression and propaganda of the modern Chinese government…  many if not most Chinese citizens today...don't even know it ever happened. Why is the communist regime in charge of China so insistent on erasing the history of this event? What IS the history of this event? I learned so much about communist China's history this week and now really fully understand why the Tiananmen Square  protests occurred, and why they were violently ended. I hope you learn a bunch too and get some laughs in as well. Iranians protest over Morality Police killing woman over hijab With increased authoritarianism among governments, Iranian citizens have taken to the streets to protest.   At issue is the killing of a Kurdish woman, who was beaten to death by the Morality Police for improper use of a hijab, a clothing government that covers the hair. Over 40 people have been killed in the protests that ensued.   Freedom House reports a growing autocracy throughout the world.  Over the last year, the think tank concluded that a total of 60 countries suffered declines in political rights and civil liberties over the past year, while only 25 improved. The worst countries on the list include China, Russia, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Mali, and Hong Kong. The world has witnessed a 16-year-long, loss-of-freedom run, according to Freedom House.  Pro-lifer, father of 7, arrested by 15 FBI agents The U.S. government is busy making arrests.  This time, a Catholic pro-life family's home was raided by 15-20 FBI agents on Friday. Mark Houck, a father of seven children, was arrested on charges of violating the Freedom of Access to [Abortion] Clinic Entrances Act. Mark's wife said, “They had about five guns pointed at my husband, myself, and basically at my kids,” reports LifeSiteNews.com.  Mark would drive “two hours every Wednesday to speak outside of abortion clinics for six to eight hours at a time and at times would bring their 12-year-old son.” The GiveSendGo website noted that “Mark's ‘crime' was protecting his son from an aggressive Planned Parenthood escort in downtown Philadelphia.”  Conservative woman becomes Italy's new prime minister Once more, “The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will.” (Proverbs 21:1) Now, Italian politics is moving conservative with the Brothers of Italy Party, gaining 26% of the vote in the recent national elections.   Giorgia Meloni won the election as the first female Prime Minister for the country, reports the BBC. Meloni wants more secured borders and has announced her opposition to the LHBT and Gender Identity ideology.  She opposes big international finance and the bureaucrats of Brussels (a reference to the European Union).  The BBC called it the most right-wing government for Italy since World War 2.  Ms. Meloni will be the 16th female head of state out of 45 European countries, a list that includes the UK, Scotland, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden. That's the largest number of women leading countries in European history. The domino effect of European food shortage Turmoil in Europe is producing a food shortage worldwide. Between 2018 and 2020, Russia provided 32 percent of African wheat imports while Ukraine contributed 12 percent. World Magazine reports that 70% of Somalia's grain comes from Ukraine. Consequently, more than 800,000 Somalians have been displaced due to hunger and drought conditions. Plus, hundreds have already died of starvation. Keep in mind worst case conditions for hunger have hit Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Haiti, Honduras, Nigeria, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the countries in the Horn of Africa. In Amos 8:11, the Sovereign LORD declared, “The days are coming when I will send a famine through the land—not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD'”. Americans concerned about economy and crime ahead of abortion As we approach the 2022 elections Americans are more interested in the economy and crime than abortion. Whether pro-abortion or pro-life, the issue of abortion takes second fiddle in the American mind, according to an ABC/WaPo poll released Sunday.  Americans are most concerned about the economy (89%), education (77%), and inflation (76%). Only 62% are concerned about the abortion issue.  Immigration and climate change were of least importance (standing at 61% and 50% respectively).  But Americans still lean pro-abortion when it comes to public policy in recent polls.  The ABC poll found the “public trusts the Democratic Party over the Republican Party to handle abortion by a wide 20 points.” A Pew Research poll found 61% of Americans wanted abortion legal in all or most cases. And a Gallup poll found 67% of Americans want abortion legalized in the first trimester — the highest number recorded in 25 years of polling.  NBC's story on 3D Ultrasounds and reference to “baby” in womb And finally, the NBC Today show did an extensive piece on 3D ultrasounds featuring videos of children in the womb who appear to be reacting to bitter or sweet flavors consumed by their mothers.   Interestingly, the coverage referred to the children as “babies,” not “fetal tissue.”  NBC REPORTER: “So, you guys have to see this!  Have you heard about this? So, this morning, we wanted to show you some amazing baby faces. “Look at this. Researchers in Britain wanted to know if babies in the womb react when the mom ingests a flavor of food. And this is what they saw. “So, the left is of a baby and its resting state. And then on the right, you see he smiles, 20 minutes. The mom ate some carrots. AL ROKER: “So, were there other foods?” REPORTER: “Yes, there were other foods. I'm glad you asked. You want to look at this baby's reaction? Mom had kale.” ROKER: “Wow!” REPORTER:  “So here's the thing. Let's say he's co-author says the images could just show muscle movements when a baby's reacting to maybe a flavor that's bitter.” The Worldview wonders, “Do any of these reporters, who marveled at the humanity of the babies in the womb, advocate abortion?” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, September 27th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. On April 25, 1999 between ten and sixteen thousand Falun Gong believers, clutching the little blue book of Li Hongzing, gathered outside the Chinese Communist Party's headquarters in Beijing. They stayed from dawn until well after sunset for what was the largest public protest in China since the 1989 democracy movement that resulted in the Tiananmen Square Massacre. For Chinese authorities, Falun Gong or Law Wheel Cultivation was a dangerous “devil cult” worthy of persecution decreed from the very top of the government and party structure.
