Send us a textFrankie and Kelly Maxwell stop by the show to discuss how the band came together, their father and his love of music, their new EP, Red Shelter, sobriety, and more. *****Shurr Jr is a family power trio that consists of a guitarist/vocalist, Nick Maxwell, Drums, Frankie Maxwell, and Kelly Maxwell on bass. The siblings' father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn't fall far from the tree. They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls. Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago. Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad... The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay."The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... He wanted to name a band or album "Red Shelter," but he passed away before he could make that happen, so the kids in Shurr Jr. decided to name that album as another tribute to him.Musically, they take elements of Pixies, Elliott Smith, Husker Du, Avett Brothers, the Replacements, and Title Fight. This is the new single/video, "Ink": https://youtu.be/u1-p5WtdQ9o?si=lEal3FveTCWIiMcz*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. “Were you ready?” they ask. You'd think I'd have a ready answer to a question asked so often. One I'd prepared earlier.Maybe it is less question and more response when people learn I was appointed CEO of the Richmond Football Club at age 24.This thought comes to mind when I am interviewing Collingwood Premiership Captain Nick Maxwell, the perfect guest “In the Arena” in Grand Final week. Since retiring as an AFL player after a remarkable career, Nick has been Leadership Coach and Mentor of Melbourne Storm in the NRL, Greater Western Sydney and Collingwood, and is now CEO of the wonderful Eclat, where designCEO is proudly located. The first team Nick Maxwell captained was Collingwood, the biggest and most famous in the country. He was never a captain of any of his junior teams because that honour generally went to one of the better players, which, in his own judgement, was never him. This judgement prevailed when the hundreds of names were called in draft after draft, but never his. He was good enough to be invited for tryouts over pre-season with AFL clubs, and the effort this asked of him, motivated by hope rather than expectation, only to be rejected time and again.Eventually, Collingwood did take a chance, but the stakes were low, as were the expectations, selection #15 in the Rookie Draft, which effectively made him the 99th player selected that year.It took him a season before he won a place in the Collingwood senior team, and after only twenty games, he was asked by legendary captain Nathan Buckley to join the player leadership group.“Were you ready?” I wonder.I have never really had a good answer, but as years pass, I now understand when taking on anything difficult, be it a personal goal, ambition or desire, or a circumstance or situation you find yourself, my answer is now:“You are never ready”.Nick Maxwell is now In the Arena. Play on!

They discuss challenges in the film industry and opportunities for new models to empower creators through technology. We also talk about: - The meaning of "making it" in the film industry and how technology can empower creators - Challenges in the current entertainment system, including unfair contracts and lack of transparency - The mission and features of Kino Studios' digital premiere app to help filmmakers launch globally - Inefficiencies in film marketing and distribution that new models could improve - The potential for education and training programs to develop emerging storytellers Enjoy! Indie Artist Spotlight niko! niko! Is the moniker of Colombian-American musician and songwriter Nick Maxwell, a gifted young bedroom producer cooking up some really cool Alternative R&B. He has garnered over 400,000 streams and was featured on Apple Music's Editorial Playlist, “Brown Sugar." Taking inspiration from Childish Gambino's “Redbone", niko! taps into a sultry and raw side of R&B that's filled with lo-fi synths and off-beat drums, which help deliver an experimental indie aesthetic. As the second single off of his upcoming project, ‘Love Fi', this track specifically deals with themes of desire, doubt, and the way a person makes another feel. niko! on social media https://www.instagram.com/niko.wav/ https://www.facebook.com/niko.artist.music
Episode 1 Series 1: Reputation Matters with Clinton Bown & Nick Maxwell Nick Maxwell captained Australia's biggest sporting club, the AFL's Collingwood Football Club to premiership glory in 2010, breaking a 20-year premiership. But Maxwell's role in this story is one that may never have been, but for his dogged determination, hard work, and ability to lead, despite not being, in his own words, the most talented of players. Maxwell's reputation grew over time, enriched by its tough beginnings, being overlooked and being underestimated. In this first episode of Reputation Matters, host Clinton Bown chats candidly with Maxwell about his learning through professional sport, and how he's taken those opportunities and reputation into his business life. SHOW NOTES for Reputation Matters What to expect in this episode:(05:02): Internal Reputation vs External Reputation – finding the balance(07:55): Control what you can control – that's all you can do(13:42): (Trust) is absolutely critical, it's everything. The most important thing is to do what you say you are going to do. For all other resources:
In this episode of the GASB Podcast, hosted by Michael Denehey and Troy Trewin, former Australian rules football captain Nick Maxwell, founder of Eclat shares valuable insights on the parallels between sports and business leadership. He highlights the importance of consistency, adaptability, and the power of asking questions. Maxwell's experiences provide a unique perspective on effective team dynamics in both sports and the business world. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: Nick shares that the hardest thing in Growing a Small Business is the importance of not trying to be everything to everyone. It's okay for leaders not to have all the answers. Collaboration and seeking input can lead to more informed decisions. Nick's recommendation for favorite business Book is "The Starfish and the Spider." It explores adaptability and the concept of whether your business operates like a starfish or a spider. This book challenges the idea of being the "be all and end all." For personal development, Nick enjoys podcasts that allow him to unwind during his commute. He explores true crime and stays connected with friends through American football and fantasy football discussions. Nick's go-to tool for small business growth is the remarkable device for note-taking. Keeping everything in one place and being organized can significantly help small businesses. Nick's advice for day one of starting out is to ask more questions and look at both sides of the equation. Educate yourself to make well-informed decisions. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Don't miss out on this opportunity to take your small business to new heights! Enjoyed the podcast? Please leave a review on iTunes or your preferred platform. Your feedback helps more small business owners discover our podcast and embark on their business growth journey.
This week The Ox is back from the 'fat farm' (his words not ours) and after doing a bonus pod a couple of weeks ago with Magpies legend Nick Maxwell, we've come back to Maxy's joint for a 'normal' podcast episode. The Ox is looking good, and gives us an update on his Bali trip and the new 'hobby' of getting an outrageous number of colonics in a short period of time. Marko is keen to hear about the hobby and wants all the details….and oh my gosh do we get the details. It isn't pretty. Highly suggest you fast-forward through the first 10-minutes of the show. But the good news is that The Ox has lost a decent amount of weight, and is looking great, he also got some teeth work done, and looks very Shane Warne-esque. And after the discussions about Ox's desire for an ‘urban cool' look, Marko reckons he is well on the way. Looking good and dressing sharp. We get a call from family member Malcolm ‘the little engine that could' who has been on his own health journey and achieved brilliant results, and wants to give Ox a pump up.Marko has a confession, a ‘can we still be friends' question for Ox. It is something he's brought up before on the pod, but it has now evolved into a regular thing, rather than a one-off. Ox is reminded of one of his favourite movies, Police Academy, and reckons Marko reminds him of Hightower in the movie. Flower chat. We have a 5-minute chat on flowers. Apologies in advance. This podcast has really gone downhill. The Ox has a business idea about buying plain shirts, but creating iron on logos from expensive brands. Speaking of business ideas, The Ox was looking at Producer Dan's phone and saw a message pop up about a business idea Dan has had to do with Sausage Dogs. We brainstorm it, and Ox decides to call a mate, Nigel, who is an important bloke at Petstock, and bounce it off him. Could it fly?The Ox reckons he has been ripped off at a cafe. He explains what happened and the cost, and it is indeed quite ridiculous. Marko is keen to hear other ripoff stories from cafes. Let us know on the socials, or leave us a voicemail here. Are cafes ripping us off, or are the prices fair?Ox makes a big claim that when the petrol tank says zero, there is a secret reserve of 30ks left. Marko is unsure about this, but Ox is adamant that all cars have a secret 30k reserve. Is he right? Marko shares a story of getting on the wrong side of his mother-in-law with a shonky petrol gauge.Lots of feedback this week, and the results of a poll that Ox put up on a recent business idea of his - Tindermat - an app that helps match people at laundromats. Ox and Marko can't believe that the family has voted the way that they have. And, we have a suggestion for a poll from family member Rob the Train Driver. It's a good one.We spin the wheel, and who'd have thought, a train joke….how does this happen?Follow a Couple of Blokes, Couple of Beers and get involved with the show on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, or send a voicemail to Ox and Marko here. With one of the biggest events on the Footy calendar fast approaching we were grateful that Terry Daniher made time to pop in for a chat. The Big Freeze is back on Monday night and while a game of footy will be played the most important part of the day is raising money and awareness for the fight against MND.Terry took us on a trip down memory lane. He talked to how the night life in Ungarie and Melbourne we so different that he has a start to AFL somewhat similar to Dane! How despite his Dad pimping out Neale to all the footy clubs, ultimately he was the best Foot manager they both could have asked for.A smile crept across his face when reminiscing about belting Derm and a few of the Tough Hawthorn players of the 80s and when he spoke of a young lad by the name of Nick Maxwell he used to coach, he spoke to how every kid should model themselves off him.Enjoy the tales of Terry Daniher. Nick Maxwell, Head of FFIS research partnership between the RUSI Centre for Financial Crime & Security Studies and NJM Research chats with Marie Lundberg and Sam Sheen about public -private partnerships establishing and developing across the globe to exchange valuable information for the detection and prevention of financial crime, both at the national level and across jurisdiction. Nick Maxwell is a former AFL player and premiership captain of the Collingwood Football Club. Throughout his 204 AFL games, he developed a reputation and was respected for his leadership, endeavour, courage and loyalty and because of this has become a sought after leadership consultant who works with the Collingwood Football Club and the Melbourne Storm NRL club currently. It wasn't easy for Maxwell though, who was initially overlooked in two national drafts and although he trained and had interest from several clubs, they chose to pass on him as well. He moved to Ballarat to study and would find his feet and begin his journey to the AFL via VFL club North Ballarat. After two seasons with North Ballarat, Collingwood drafted Maxwell as a rookie where he would fight to earn his position in the senior side over time.Maxwell worked for everything he got throughout his career and after listening to what he had to overcome, the obstacles he faced and his approach to it, he thoroughly deserved it all.Maxwell's story is one of persistence, belief and humility. Whatever perception you have of Nick Maxwell, let it go now because he is incredibly grounded, self aware and real. Our conversation provides a fantastic insight into the mental approach and application Nick showed to reach his goals and how you can duplicate his mindset to reach your own. He also talks about his leadership approach throughout his playing days, dealing with the infamous 'rat pack' at Collingwood, his training habits and his surprising take on the abrupt end to his career. Please enjoy this open and honest conversation with Nick Maxwell.
In this episode of The One Shot Movement, we had the pleasure to talk to Nick Maxwell, the last Collingwood Football Club Premiership Captain.
