This week on Black & Published, Nikesha speaks with Myah Ariel, author of the novel, No Ordinary Love. Myah, who is a journalist, film enthusiast, and lover of all things pop culture said she decided to try her hand at writing after spending the pandemic reconnecting with her love of reading romance novels. In our conversation she discusses how she managed to write, sell and publish two books in the four years from when she first approached the page. What intimidated her the most about novels after spending years reading screenplays and art criticism. And why she keeps coming back to the toxicity of the entertainment industry as a setting for her stories about love, hope, and reclaiming your name and life in the midst of fame. When I found BB Gabriel on Instagram (), and read about her book, No Ordinary Love, I wasted no time in reaching out to her to ask her to be a guest on this show. BB readily agreed, but due to some medical issues that came up for her, we had to wait awhile to get her episode recorded. It is with tremendous honor that I am finally able to bring you this episode!  BB had no hesitation in sharing her profound journey as a survivor of multiple sexual assaults and domestic violence. She discusses her ongoing medical challenges, the emotional impact of her experiences, and the importance of healing and self-discovery. BB also emphasizes the significance of safe spaces for survivors and the role of mental health in recovery. Tracy endured and survived 23 years of domestic and spiritual abuse in a marriage to a prominent minister. For years she lost her voice and agency, living in silence as her spirit was bruised behind closed doors. In the early 80s, when emergency shelters were scarce and conversations about unhappy marriages were taboo, she struggled to even recognize her suffering as abuse. When she finally escaped, the disbelief she faced from those who revered her abuser made her path to healing even more challenging. Inspired by the "Start by Believing" movement, she became an advocate for victims, eventually leading her to chair a local domestic violence shelter agency. Haunted by the tragic outcomes of those who never reached out for help, she decided to take action. Her response? Creating the film “No Ordinary Love”, which tells the story of two women grappling with toxic relationships, aiming to raise awareness and spark crucial conversations about domestic violence. The film is now streaming worldwide. In addition, Tracy has no hesitation in telling her story because she believes in the importance of pushing the conversation, and the movie she produced, out to everyone she can to help bring justice to victims and survivors; because we all know someone whose life has been impacted by rape, sexual assault, or domestic violence. EVIDENCE-BASED BIRTH PRACTICES MAKE BIRTH HEALTHIER AND SAFER FOR MOTHERS AND BABIESAt The Eudaimonia Center, we know what makes birth safe for mothers and babies AND standard maternity care in the United States is not evidence-based and does not reflect this knowledge. Therefore, the health-care provider and place of birth will influence the care that Mom receives in powerful ways. The result is that birth is less safe for mothers and babies than it should be, causing harm where it could be avoided. The World Health Organization identifies four care practices that promote, support, and protect normal birth. Lamaze International identifies two additional practices. Together, these six practices are supported by research, including systematic reviews from The Cochrane Library and the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (2007). Written for women and their families, the Lamaze Healthy Birth Practice papers describe the importance of each of the six practices for a healthy, safe birth and provide a synopsis of the evidence that supports each practice. Every pregnant woman needs to know that these six evidence-based birth practices make birth healthier and safer for mothers and babies.Healthy Birth Practice #1: Let Labor Begin on Its OwnHealthy Birth Practice #2: Walk, Move Around, and Change Positions Throughout LaborHealthy Birth Practice #3: Bring a Loved One, Friend, or Doula for Continuous SupportHealthy Birth Practice #4: Avoid Interventions That Are Not Medically NecessaryHealthy Birth Practice #5: Avoid Giving Birth on the Back, and Follow the Body's Urges to PushHealthy Birth Practice #6: Keep Mother and Baby Together – It's Best for Mother, Baby, and BreastfeedingBirth is intended to happen simply... without worry or trouble.About Our Guest:Gina Mundy is an attorney specializing in childbirth cases. The sermon also digs deeper into the idea of God's love and desire for a relationship with us. While we are ultimately judged by God, we are not condemned thanks to the salvation provided by Jesus.

In episode 327 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we interview Tracy Rector. She is a speaker, an award-winning film producer, an author, and a survivor who uses her voice to raise awareness of gender-based violence. USA Today recognized her film, No Ordinary Love, as one of the "biggest summer movies" in 2021. She's spoken at events in the US, including Guam, Asia Pacific and the UK. Tracy served as board chair of the 2nd largest domestic violence agency in Texas. Her passion and energy are ever-present on stage. After the film's release, she launched PROJECT #RaiseAwareness to screen the film at colleges as a Title IX event. We find out why she decided to attend Texas Tech for her undergraduate experience, what was special about Tri Delta Sorority that made her want to join, why did she decide to produce the film "No Ordinary Love" on intimate partner violence, what was surprising about the reactions she got from people watching the film, what college students think about the film, what we can do to prevent intimate partner violence from happening in the future, how can Title IX offices be more effective on college campuses, whether fraternity or sorority members have an obligation to get involved, and Tracy's next steps in her mission. Enjoy!

Learn more here: https://www.rainn.org/articles/what-is-consent  4:46: We dive into why it's important for us to discuss how consent is portrayed in dramas. In short: portrayals of consent influence real life. 8:39: But portrayals of non-consent or ambiguous consent can be emotionally gratifying for women and we discuss why that might be. 16:28: A description of the structure of our episode: we start with portrayals of non-consent and then work our way to non-verbal and verbal consent (note: we were pleasantly surprised by how many examples of good consent we were able to find!)
