The Turbulent World of Middle East Soccer
Saudi Arabia and international sports, a tale of politics and greed

Saudi Arabia brings out the worst in the world of international sports in terms of politics and greed. FIFA's awarding Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup hosting rights is just the tip of the iceberg. The awarding violated the world soccer body's human rights policy and mocked the sports world's fiction that sports and politics are separate rather than Siamese twins joined at the hip. The Olympic Council of Asia's earlier awarding of the 2029 Asian Winter Games to Saudi Arabia, even though the kingdom lacks a qualifying winter season and intends to hold the tournament in a troubled mega science fiction project that is under construction, is another example of politics and money trumping sports.

Gliding down an over-500-meter-long ice slide, Zhang Jiajia felt like she was flying, and that her one-minute experience had been worth the hour-plus wait in line.张佳佳从一条500多米长的冰滑梯上一滑而下,感觉自己仿佛在飞翔,这一分钟的体验让她觉得一个多小时的排队等待都是值得的。"It's super exciting. My heart soared with me," said Zhang, a tourist from east China's Zhejiang province, after trying the Super Ice Slide at the iconic Harbin Ice-Snow World, which kicked off its annual run on Saturday.“太刺激了!我的心也跟着飞了起来,”来自中国东部浙江省的游客张佳佳在尝试了哈尔滨冰雪大世界标志性的超级冰滑梯后说道。哈尔滨冰雪大世界于12月21日正式启动了一年一度的运营。The world's largest ice-and-snow theme park, the 26th edition of the Harbin Ice-Snow World, officially opened at 10 am in Harbin, the capital of Northeast China's Heilongjiang province also known as the "city of ice."冰雪大世界位于中国东北部黑龙江省省会哈尔滨(被誉为“冰城”),是全球最大的冰雪主题公园。12月21日上午10时,第26届冰雪大世界正式开园。Themed "Dream of Winter, Love among Asia," the park was built using 300,000 cubic meters of ice and snow, incorporating elements inspired by the upcoming 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games, which will open next February, right after China's Spring Festival holiday. It is also the first major international ice and snow event hosted by China since the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. With an overall planned area of 1 million square meters, up from last year's 800,000 square meters, the park is the largest in its 26-year history.冰雪大世界总体规划面积100万平方米,比去年增加20万平方米,是26年历史上规模最大的一次。The park features nine major zones, recreating landmark landscapes of 42 countries and 3 regions that are members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in the form of ice-and-snow structures that can be illuminated at night, including replicas of the Temple of Heaven in China, Osaka Castle in Japan and the Taj Mahal in India. The main tower stands on the main axis of the park, featuring towering ice columns that depict the official emblem of the OCA.主塔位于园区主轴线上,高耸的冰柱上雕刻着OCA的官方会徽。"The ice sculptures are incredibly exquisite. There is one spot in the Hangzhou Asian Games Village that Japanese rugby sevens player Marin Kajiki and her teammate Wakaba Hara visit each day, and always find something new. That's the pin trading center along the riverbank.A fan of Kung Fu Panda, Hara has already got three panda-pattern pins after arriving at the Asian Games Village, collected on three consecutive days. "They are so cute," she said.Kajiki said she brought 10 Team Japan pins, but she has almost run out, as she uses them to exchange so often.Unlike the typical practice of exchanging pins between individuals, the trading center features an intelligent interactive device that allows athletes to exchange pins exclusively with it.Liang Yu, a staff member at the center, explained that this lotus-shaped machine has a display plate for showcasing the pins available, and participants can choose any pin they want in exchange for one of their own.The lotus flower also offers pins that athletes can acquire by participating in low-carbon activities within the village. Additionally, according to Liang, alongside the machine, there is also an area for face-to-face pin exchanges."Our primary focus here is to create a dedicated space for athletes to engage in pin exchanges," Liang said."Because the Hangzhou 19th Asian Games also promote a theme of green technology, we hope to facilitate pin exchange through an automated process.""We have also introduced a low-carbon account system. By accumulating low-carbon points through the completion of various green and eco-friendly tasks, participants can earn points and, in turn, exchange them for a series of our pins," Liang said. The glass wall at the center is adorned with messages and signatures in various languages. Liang explained that they invited athletes to add their wishes for the Asian Games, their respective teams, or sign their names in their native languages. This is also a way to acquire a pin. Many athletes frequent the pin trading center, and some faces have become quite familiar due to their regular visits. This is particularly noticeable after dinner, when the place transforms into a hub for athletes to gather and forge new friendships. For those who may find it challenging to strike up conversations with strangers, the pin exchange device offers a friendly avenue for them to initiate interactions."Some people may not find certain pins appealing, while others may see them as attractive. Using the device to exchange pins can offer people the opportunity to obtain the ones they truly prefer," explained Liang.International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach visited the pin trading center on Sept 23.Bach not only tried out the intelligent pin exchange device, but also engaged in the exchange of a West Lake pin with a staff member dressed like Bai Suzhen (the protagonist from Hangzhou-based Chinese fairy tale, The White Snake) on the spot.He got a pin of Lianlian, one of the Asian Games' mascots from the device. When staff members explained to him that it means good luck, he replied: "I wish all the athletes good luck".As well as the Athletes' Village, there are also pin trading spots in the villages for the technical officials and media, as well as in the Main Media Centre. The Olympic Council of Asia also host two badge exchange events on Friday and Sunday at the MMC.One volunteer at the MMC spends her downtime looking for Asian Games pins to swap with her pins from the Beijing Winter Olympics. Her pins are from her sister, who gave her a dozen so that she could experience the pin exchange culture at the Games.Liu Ruiya, a staff member from Hangzhou Culture Radio and Television Group, has brought more than 100 pins to the MMC to exchange with other members of the media."They are part of my and my friend's collections. We have several hundred, most of them are from the previous Olympic Games," Liu said.Reporter: Li Yingxue

Technology and tradition combine for Hangzhou's opening extravaganzaAspectacle to savor, and more than just a visual feast, a stunning opening ceremony laden with Hangzhou characteristics wowed the world on Saturday, as President Xi Jinping declared the 19th Asian Games open. With the city's profound history, culture and its modern image presented in an eye-catching and high-tech fashion, the opening show at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium helped to express the host's warm hospitality and its wish to unite the world through sports.Following an opening performance depicting the autumn equinox, one of China's 24 solar terms that celebrates the harvest season, over 50,000 spectators burst into cheers as Xi announced the opening of the Hangzhou Games, making the Zhejiang provincial capital the third Chinese city to host the continental sporting gala, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.With the giant floor screen lighting the way, the athletes' parade proceeded to the melody of Our Asia, played to the pounding beat of drums built in the shape of osmanthus, the city flower of Hangzhou, fervently extending the city's invitation to Asia's best.During the parade, images of iconic scenic spots at Hangzhou's famous West Lake were projected onto the oval-shaped floor screen, with the scent of osmanthus sprayed out across the stadium, allowing marching athletes and spectators to enjoy the city's picturesque scenery in an immersive way.Wang Hao, president of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou Organizing Committee, said Hangzhou is honored to play host to such a grand event, where friendship and mutual respect are strengthened."In this season of harvest, we give our best wishes to all the athletes and hope that they will compete with passion, challenge personal limits, strive for excellence and realize their dreams," said Wang, also governor of Zhejiang province."We hope that all participants will engage in closer communication, appreciate the culture of one another, build stronger friendships and find happiness during the Games."Raja Randhir Singh, the acting president of the Olympic Council of Asia, showed appreciation for the Chinese host's meticulous organization in his speech."You have done a fantastic job in preparing for the Asian Games. The one-year postponement due to the pandemic was unprecedented in OCA history, but your diligence and determination will bear fruit over the next 16 days and you will be rewarded with the most magnificent and successful Asian Games ever," said Singh."The OCA salutes you! Xie Xie. Thank you."Supported by new technologies, the Hangzhou ceremony boasted many historic firsts and highlighted the sustainable and digitally enhanced future of such gala events, according to the creative team. For the first time in China, organizers switched from a traditional fireworks show to a virtual display, projected onto a giant curtain screen the size of nine IMAX screens. An artistic performance, themed as "Tide Surging in Asia", captured the crowd's imagination with breathtaking projections depicting Hangzhou's past and present, with glasses-free 3D animations accompanying traditional dance performances. The design of the costumes worn by the performers was inspired by the region's rich history and timeless grace, dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), with Hangzhou's ancient arts of music, poetry and calligraphy vividly reflected in the texture and style of the dresses designed by Chu Yan, a professor at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. For the finale, hundreds of millions of virtual sparks, each representing a participant of the online torch relay, formed the shape of a human torchbearer, who ran into the stadium to light the main cauldron together with the physical relay's final bearer — Zhejiang native and Olympic champion swimmer, Wang Shun.To adhere to the principle of delivering the greenest possible Games, zero-emission methanol was used to fuel all of the torches and the main cauldron.Extravaganza英/ɪk,strævə'gænzə/美/ɪk,strævə'gænzə/n.盛大表演Calligraphy英/kə'lɪgrəfɪ/美/kə'lɪgrəfɪ/n.书法

Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) UK: Russia aims to take #Mariupol before V-Day The UK believes Russia wants to take the port city of Mariupol and its vast steel mill before it marks Victory Day on Monday. “The renewed effort by Russia to secure Azovstal and complete the capture of Mariupol is likely linked to the upcoming 9 May Victory Day commemorations”, the British Defence Ministry said in a daily intelligence briefing. Whilst Ukrainian resistance continues in Azovstal, Russian losses will continue to build and frustrate their operational plans in southern Donbass, it added. *) Almost 500 civilians evacuated from Mariupol: Ukraine Staying with Ukraine, Kiev has said almost 500 civilians have been evacuated from Mariupol and its besieged Azovstal steel plant since a UN-led rescue operation began. "We have managed to evacuate almost 500 civilians," Andriy Yermak (An-dree Year-mak), who heads Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office, said. The United Nations had said that a new convoy would evacuate civilians from the "bleak hell" of the factory, which has become the last pocket of resistance in the southern port city. *) UK PM Johnson loses control of traditional strongholds in local elections British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party has lost control of traditional strongholds in London and suffered losses elsewhere in local elections. Early results showed that Johnson's party was ousted in Wandsworth - a low-tax Conservative stronghold since 1978. The Tories also said they had lost control of the borough of Barnet, which has been held by the party in all but two elections since 1964. "This is a warning shot from Conservative voters," said Daniel Thomas, the Tory leader of Barnet council. *) Researchers find animal virus in deceased man's implanted pig heart US researchers trying to learn what killed the first person to receive a heart transplant from a pig have discovered the organ harboured an animal virus. University of Maryland doctors said they found an unwelcome surprise, viral DNA inside the pig heart. They did not find signs that this bug was causing an active infection. But a major worry about animal-to-human transplants is the risk that it could introduce new kinds of infections to people. 57-year-old David Bennett died in March, two months after the groundbreaking experimental transplant. And, finally... *) Asian Games postponed as China battles Covid The Asian Games due to take place in China in September have been postponed indefinitely as Beijing battles a resurgence of Covid cases. "The Olympic Council of Asia has announced that the 19th Asian Games will be postponed," said a statement on the official Games website. No reason was given for the delay, but China is racing to extinguish its largest outbreak of Covid-19 since the early days of the pandemic. #RussiaVDay #UKElection #OrganTransplant #PigHeart #AsianGames

After our very well received set of interviews with General Election candidates we had requests to feature more of them so we reached out again to the remaining ten potential TD's and we got positive responses from six of those which we bring to you today. In today's show you will hear from Cllr Declan Bree (Independent), James Conway (Independent), Deputy Marc MacSharry (Fianna Fail), Bernie O'Hara (Independent), Thomas Walsh (Fine Gael) & Sean Wynne (Independent) who are all seeking your vote on Saturday, 8th February. "It's morally unjust and unfair to tax a person's home. I gave a commitment ... that I would vote at council level against Property Tax." says Councillor Declan Bree of the recently increased Local Property Tax which is the biggest issue he's hearing on the doorstep. "If your ideas are good enough they will get attention and get people talking." Independent candidate James Conway speaks about the exposure he garnered with a viral video about the Apple tax bill and the progression of his political ambitions over the last four years. "The leadership of many organisations have let them down, there was a culture of flamboyance ... at the expense of the governance and administration of the sport itself." Fianna Fail's Marc MacSharry speaks about the scandals over the last 4 years with the Olympic Council of Ireland and the Football Association. "Businesses set up shop in areas where there is good hospitals, good schools, good social activities. ... By investing in these things, it would be money that would be returned one hundred fold, we're losing money by not investing." says Independent second time candidate Bernie O'Hara about the lack of investment into the rural areas in the North West of Ireland. "I come from that decade where many of my friends left the country because of the boom or bust days of previous governments. So many of my friends had to emigrate ... we don't want to go back to that decade." says Sligo Cllr Thomas Walsh, a first time Fine Gael candidate looking at the economy of the area and looking for a rebalancing. Finally our last guest on the show, Independent candidate Sean Wynne speaks about the cost of sewage as an issue for one off planning permission in County Leitrim. "Even if a couple got planning permission, they would be the Bord na Mona system which costs approx €60, up the road in Longford it costs €12,500." This brings to a close our 2020 General Election coverage. A fantastic thank you to each of the fifteen candidates who made themselves available to talk to their Leitrim voters via our podcast. Thanks also to Paschal Mooney who gave such a fantastic analysis of each candidate and the outlook for each of the candidates earlier in the election cycle. Regardless of what your politics are, I would ask you to please use your vote and exercise your right to vote for our next government.

Hosted by the Olympic Council of Asia, it is also known as the Asian Olympic Games. The 18th Asian Games was held in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang from August to September, and featured 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions. This was the second time for Indonesia to host the Games, and the first since 1962. With a presence in Indonesia since 1974 and having introduced POCARI SWEAT to the country in 1989, Otsuka has a long history of partnerships with the local community. Having the opportunity to participate in such a major regional event was a highlight for all company employees involved. Led by staff from Otsuka’s Indonesian subsidiary PT. Amerta Indah Otsuka, the Games provided a welcome opportunity for Otsuka group employees from across Asia to come together as a team to support the athletes. Otsuka Pharmaceutical has been an official partner of the previous four Games, leveraging its research and development in physical conditioning to help enable athletes to compete at their very best. During the Games, a ‘POCARI SWEAT House’ was set up in the athlete’s village to provide participants with the popular hydration and electrolyte supplement drink, alongside the conditioning product BODYMAINTÉ. POCARI SWEAT was also made readily available at each competition venue. In collaboration with the Japan Sport Council, Otsuka also established the POCARI SWEAT OASIS, a place where people from across Asia involved in athletic training could come together to exchange ideas, knowledge, and learn from other experts. The program also featured lectures and provided meeting spaces for various national sports organizations, as well as the sharing of the latest information on sports nutrition and conditioning. The slogan of the Games was “Energy of Asia,” and it truly was a Games that demonstrated the vitality of the region. Otsuka is committed to continuing to contribute to the growth and development of Asia through the development of scientifically-based products, the sharing of research findings, and participation in events such as the Asian Games.

On behalf of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Marie-Elaine Grant on taping and bracing in the athletic population LIVE from the IOC World Conference in Monaco. Dr. Marie-Elaine Grant, is a chartered physiotherapist currently on the IOC medical commission and has monitored physiotherapy services on behalf of the IOC for the past 2 Summer Olympic games in addition to owning a clinical practice in Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Grant’s globally recognized Chartered Physiotherapist qualification has led to a career of preparing, rehabilitating and working with Olympic athletes and clinical patients. In this episode, we discuss: -The top 3 reasons for when to use and not use tape or a brace on your athlete -Does the ongoing use of taping or bracing develop dependency? -The most important considerations to uphold the integrity of taping during sport -Is bracing or neuromuscular training more effective post-injury? And what are the validity of the outcome measures? -And so much more!   There are many nuances to treating the high level athlete that can sometimes be more important than clinical reasoning. Dr. Grant believes, “Every elite athlete will have a very strict drill the day before and certainly in the hour leading into competition. And that drill and that discipline that they have developed that they get themselves to the starting blocks of the track that has to absolutely be something that is fully respected.”   The ultimate goal of a physiotherapist is to help the athlete return to sport without the use of taping or bracing. Dr. Grant finds, “The less dependency that athletes have on extraneous supports, the better and the more likely they are to have consistent and really good performances.”   Regardless of whether the mechanisms of taping and bracing have gained support from the research literature, “Athletes will continue to use it and they will continue to request it. Therefore, there is something in this… we have to try and understand why athletes find this beneficial even if the science is not there.” From Dr. Grant’s experience with the Olympics, she has found that the real importance is, “we need to have a much better understanding of what it is doing, how it does it and to ensure that athletes don’t develop a false dependency on it.”   For more information on Dr. Grant:   Dr. Marie-Elaine Grant (PhD, PT), Physiotherapist to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Medical Commission, Games Group. Ireland’s Olympic Team Lead Physiotherapist from 1990 – 2010. A specialist member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists.   Marie-Elaine is a physiotherapy graduate of UCD (University College Dublin). During the early phase of her career she worked in University Hospitals in Dublin before traveling to Europe and the USA to further her learning and skills. During this time she developed a keen interest in sports physiotherapy and advanced her knowledge and expertise by successfully completing post graduate courses in core sports physiotherapy skills and at the same time advancing clinical experience working with sports teams and aspiring young athletes before advancing to supporting the high performance athlete. She was appointed to the Medical Committee of the Olympic Council of Ireland in 1990 and subsequently appointed as their lead physiotherapist. Marie-Elaine has served with the Irish Olympic Team for 5 consecutive Summer Olympic Games commencing with Barcelona 1992 through to Beijing 2008. She also served with the Irish Olympic Team for the Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and was appointed to 10 Irish European Youth Olympic Squads. In this role she planned, implemented strategies for provision of high quality physiotherapy services and injury prevention screening programmes for high performance and developmental athletes together with developing physiotherapy support networks with the National Governing Bodies of Olympic Sports.   Marie-Elaine was inspired by the commitment, focus and dedication of so many athletes which in turn inspired her to push the boundaries of her clinical understanding by undertaking further learning by scientific research. She was awarded a PhD in 1997, the title of her research thesis was: ‘Evaluation of the Effects of Spinal Strengthening using a Sports Medicine Exercise Approach’. She continues to participate in clinical research, has had peer reviewed publications and presents regularly at international conferences.   In 2011 Marie-Elaine was appointed to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Medical Commission Games Group, as a clinical expert in sports physiotherapy, in this role she has been responsible for monitoring physiotherapy activities and facilities for participating nations at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games and the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games, and is currently preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games to be held in PyeongChang. The key aims of this role are to protect the health of the world’s Olympic athletes and advance the role of physiotherapy within the global Olympic movement. Marie-Elaine continues to further advance sports physiotherapy ensuring recognition of the very important role that physiotherapy plays in protecting the health of the athlete through prevention, delivery of treatment of the highest standard and also intervention to support performance.   She continues to work extensively in clinical practice focusing on all aspects of sports physiotherapy. She also lectures on third level BSc Physiotherapy programmes and post-graduate MSc programmes in Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy for Universities in Ireland and has also been an external examiner. She supervises clinical placements for physiotherapy students and mentors post graduates.   She was awarded Specialist Membership of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine in 2006 which has been renewed in 2013 for a second term. Surveys in the early 21th century put the population at between 25 and 35.The team also discovered an isolated group of Siberian tigers, around 38, living in the border area. The findings show that the populations of Amur leopards and Siberian tigers are in a stage of rapid expansion thanks to the protective efforts by both countries. However, the experts noted that the two species were struggling to find enough suitable habitats. If there is not enough space to accommodate the rapidly growing populations, they will face a serious problem of lack of prey, which could lead to a collapse in population. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. 更多内幕请关注今天的微信:英语环球 NEWSPlus Even though concerns are being raised over the financial burden that falls on potential host cities for the Asian Games, officials from the Olympic Council of Asia are insisting the competition is irreplaceable. Nearly 10,000 athletes are competing across 42 sports in Incheon, South Korea. Thousands of coaches, officials and journalists are also at the ongoing Asian games. But behind the scenes, the games' high costs have caused unease. Some critics have voiced their doubts over the necessity of a bigger and more expensive Asian Games. They also say the Olympics are enough. Wei Jizhong, an honorary vice-president of the Olympic Council of Asia, believes the Olympic Games are not the most helpful of events for nations that are lagging behind in sports development. "The Olympic games only promote the sports development of the greatest sporting nations. Meanwhile, it hardly promotes sports in those nations who appear weak at sports because these nations can't win any medals at the Olympics. Without medals, the government is unlikely to render support." The sports industry in developing nations typically rely on government support. The decision whether to offer this support is often tied to winning medals. Wei says the 2010 Asian games are a good example of the value of this Olympic alternative. "The key to the Asian games success lies in a much wider distribution of medals. Take the 2010 Asian games in Guangzhou as an example: over 80 percent of 45 participating nations earned at least a single medal. This is the best way to help foster sports development in developing nations." Understanding the financial burden of hosting the world's second-biggest multi-sport event after the Olympics, Wei admitted that he and his team are now considering a cost effective scheme to avoid potential waste like empty stadiums and high debt. Meanwhile, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, President of Olympic Council of Asia, expressed his belief there's another positive side of the games that deserves more public attention. "The big expenditures for hosting the Asian games is a practical issue which demands resolutions following government consultations. I wish expenditure was not a criteria for assessing whether an Asian games was a success or not. The Asian games not only leave behind sporting venues and infrastructure, but a spirit of sports too."

Read the full story with photos at: https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/2014/0120_01.html  Otsuka Pharmaceuticals signed a partnership contract for the 17th Asian Games (Incheon 2014) and the 18th Asian Games (Hanoi 2019) at the General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia that was held in Manila, the Philippines on January 18. This contract makes Otsuka Pharmaceuticals’ POCARI SWEAT the official drink of the Asian Games, the largest sports competition in Asia, through 2019 and the sole Japanese corporate sponsor. The first Asian Games were held in 1951 in New Delhi, India and only 500 competitors from 11 countries participated. At the 16th Asian Games, however, which were held in 2010 in Guangzhou, China, 9704 competitors from 45 countries participated, making the Asian Games the largest sporting event in Asia. The Asian Games are referred to as the Asian Olympics, governed by the Olympic Council of Asia, and boasts the largest number of sporting competitions in the world. They are held once every 4 years, and starting with the 2019 Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, they will be held on the year before the Olympics, a timing which is expected to further increase their profile as a prelude to the Olympics. Hanoi, with a population of 6.5 million, is the second-largest city in Vietnam. After it was announced that the 2019 Asian Games would be held in Vietnam, the Vietnamese government announced plans to accelerate investment in infrastructure nationwide, and it is said that Vietnam’s GDP growth between 2008 – 2025 will be the highest in the world. POCARI SWEAT’S brand recognition appears poised to increase along with Vietnam’s rapid growth. The population of Asian Games member countries totals approximately 3.8 billion*1, which accounts for about half of the world population. Otsuka Pharmaceutical believes that sports are an important element of health for people in Asian countries, which are growing and changing dynamically, and will supply POCARI SWEAT as the official drink. This ion beverage is sold in 17 countries and regions, mainly in Asia. POCARI SWEAT quickly replenishes fluids and electrolytes lost through perspiration to support athlete conditioning and aid maximum performance. Otsuka Pharmaceutical is currently the sole Japanese partner of the Games. Otsuka Pharmaceutical first expanded overseas 40 years ago, starting with Asia (Thailand in 1973, Taiwan and Indonesia in 1974). The OIAA*3 Division is currently expanding both pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals*4 businesses in Asian and Arab countries and business scale has grown tenfold in the last decade. Otsuka Pharmaceuticals has been an active partner at three past Asian Games (the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, and the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar). During each of these games, Otsuka set up base camps for POCARI SWEAT, the official beverage of the games, in the athletes’ village to provide support activities, focusing on water replenishment, to ensure that the competitors stayed in good condition. Through these activities, Otsuka built a good relationship with the Olympic Council of Asia. The Incheon Games will open on September 19. The slogan for the Incheon Games is “Diversity Shines Here,” indicating the goal of an athletic competition where all of the competitors can come together as a single family while still respecting each other’s individuality. In 2014 and 2019 POCARI SWEAT will be the symbol that unites everyone in the Otsuka Group. We look forward to continuing to receive your support and encouragement in the future.
