In the fall and winter of 2021/2022 Laura Cahill taught screenwriting to 8 young acting students from Kyiv on Zoom in English. Their last class was February 6th, 2022. The war started 18 days later. Most of the students fled their homes. Laura reunited with her students and started teaching them playwriting. On May 1st, she started teaching a second playwriting class that had been advertised on a a Telegram channel for art programs for Ukrainian Youth. It was supposed to last four weeks. Most of those students were still in Ukraine, but some had fled. The May class went so well, they decided to keep going, so on June 1st, the two classes came together and formed Young Playwrights Ukraine. On July 24th, six months after the war started, they had a reading of 18 short works with professional actors on Zoom for an audience. The cast included noted actors David Morse, Cara Buono, Ann Dowd, Kevin Corrigan, Misha Brooks, Bridgette Lundy-Paine, Ivanna Sakhno, Stefanie Lavie Owens, Oona Laurence and others. The plays were subsequently produced by Orion Theater in Stockholm Sweden, directed by Lars Rudolfsson, who had been in the audience on July 24th. The plays opened on March 20th, 2023, to outstanding reviews and ran for 30 performances. Laura and ten of the playwrights met in person for the first time in Sweden for the opening night. The collection is soon to be published by Smith&Kraus Young Playwrights Ukraine continues to meet every Saturday and Sunday to write. They're currently working with professional mentors including Theresa Rebeck, Peter Hedges, Jacquelyn Reingold, Kate Robin, Alexis Scheer, as well as Will Arbery, Stephen Belber, Erin Cressida Wilson, Keith Bunin, Jessica Goldberg and Suzanne Heathecoate on a collection of ten minute plays that tell their stories of living with war. Aside from the mentors, they have special talks with professional artists like filmmaker Mary Harron, TV creator Michelle King, Juilliard professor Kathleen McNenny, casting director Rob Decina, Playwright/TV writer Aurin Squire and others. Writers and directors offering help with this project include Warren Leight, Matthew Carnahan, Mark Brokaw, Paul McCrane, Whitney White, Lila Neubauer and more. You know how Fuqua likes to fit a little pathos and emotional weight to his action films? Think of that, but instead he’s given the opportunity to fit a little action into an emotionally heavy film. Everyone deserves a classic boxing movie role, and this is Jake Gyllenhaal’s. It’s not so much Gyllenhaal’s southpaw (metaphor intended), as it is his foray into showcasing his brilliance in a movie that arguably stands strong against 2015’s favorite boxing flick, Creed. Also, this movie has the best child-acting since Michael B. Jordan in season one of The Wire. Shoutout to Oona Laurence for killing it. I had the pleasure of stepping into my old reporting shoes last week and interviewing some stars for the premiere of Bad Moms. And this is the episode where you'll get to hear those interviews. Yay! LOL  And that's okay! I was thrilled to talk to mega producers Bill Block (Elysium, District 9) and Suzanne Todd (Alice Through The Looking Glass) about their experiences with the film. As an actor, this was where I geeked out the most. How often does a mama actor get to have face time with mega producers?? As I mentioned in my post on the premiere, I talked with the films' writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore about why they took on a movie about moms. A lot of internet people got pretty upset when they first heard that two men were tackling a film about motherhood. And I'll admit at first I was a little like, hey give a lady a crack at this! But I tried to go into it with an open mind. Plus, sometimes I think we all get upset just to have something to write on the Internet. C'mon kids. At least wait until you see the movie before you hate on it. Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn at the Bad Moms premiere July 26th Truthfully, the movie was actually pretty funny. Completely unrealistic, but so are 99% of the movies in theaters today. (You really think there's a Thor?) So let's all just relax and enjoy the swears and dick jokes and take it for what it is: a fictional account of moms who need a break from the pressures of being perfect. Can I get an Amen! I also interviewed the brilliantly talented actress Sara Rue (Less Than Perfect, Popular) and was so excited I forgot to take a picture. Womp womp. She almost snuck off the red carpet but I saw her and snagged her for a moment. Heehee! I've actually been wanting to have her on my show as a guest for a while so I was excited to get to talk to her about her new show Impastor and how she moved her family to Canada for filming. She also reveals her biggest secret to success as mom actor.   Then, I spoke to legendary actress Camryn Manheim. I had to ask her about her famous Emmy speech in 1998. It was incredibly inspiring and I still remember it to this day. We chatted about how far plus sized actresses have come since she first started. She also shared some honest moments about motherhood. She says she feels like she's messed up a lot as a mom. I say she's too hard on herself.  I hope she'll come on my show for a sit down interview and we can deep dive into this a little more. Also you guys, Alan Thicke was there. He me told an interesting story about his dad and condoms that you HAVE to hear. I talked to the adorable Oona Laurence about her role in the film as Mila Kunis' daughter. And Shauna Rappold (American Horror Story, Bad Moms) about her experiences in the film. And finally, the Queen of Dance Moms Abby Lee Miller gave me some tips on when to start Chan in dance. Hint: I'm too late! I can't even describe how much fun this was or how much pain my feet were in by the end of the night. I can tell you that it was totally worth it and MIH will be back on the carpet again someday.
