Welcome back, custmers! I recently took a vacation from the video store to go on a cruise with my wife. I've had cruises on the brain ever since, so what better time to recommend some of my favorite films that take place on ships! OVERBOARD (1987)Handyman and single-father Dean Proffitt sees an opportunity to get even with a pompous heiress named Joanna after an accident leaves her with amnesia. Dean takes advantage of the woman's lack of memory and convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of his four children. What starts out as a simple bit of revenge gets complicated as relationships are formed… and broken. Starring real life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Dean and Annie, with appearances from Edward Herrmann, Roddy McDowall, and Mike Hagerty. CABIN BOY (1994)In this utterly bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliott, Nathan Mayweather is a spoiled and tone-deaf “fancy lad” who accidentally boards the wrong ship and finds himself sailing the seas with a grizzled crew of career fishermen. The plot is silly, the jokes are weird, and the comedy is abstract. One moment cabin boy Mayweather is talking to imaginary cupcakes and in the next, he's being rescued from the depths of the ocean by Choki — half-man, half-shark. Cabin Boy was such a box office failure that director Adan Resnick literally never directed another film. I love this movie and my wife will get in her car and leave the house when I watch it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's for you.THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)If you've ever wondered what's the worst that could happen while sailing on a cruise ship, you'll soon find out. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the unstable ship is knocked over by a 90-foot-tall wave. Passengers must work together to find a way out of the upside-down cruise ship before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This multi-Academy Award winner features an all-star cast including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more. CITY HUNTER (1993)Jackie Chan is known for his wacky action flicks, and this may be the wackiest of them all. In City Hunter, Chan plays Ryu, a private detective hired to find a missing woman. Ryu and his assistant Kaori track the woman to a cruise ship and follow her there, only to discover the ship is being hijacked by terrorists. Ryu is the ultimate ladies man — they love him and he loves them. City Hunter is part comedy and part action. It's like if they remade Porky's and added machine gun wielding terrorists who constantly mow down passengers in cold blood. Is this film for everybody? No. But is it for anybody? Also, maybe not. Jackie Chan said City Hunter is the least favorite film he ever worked on, which made me pick up a copy and add it to the video store's library.Usually when my wife and I go on cruises the only thing I worry about is them running out of pudding or margaritas. After watching these I'll be keeping an eye out for terrorists, gigantic waves, and terrorists. If any of those things happen I'll cross my fingers and hope for amnesia. Happy viewing and thanks for visiting our video store! Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. This is a public episode. Jeep Show – Robert B. O’Connor

“Jeep Show; A Trouper at the Battle of the Bulge” is a fictional work by author Robert B. O'Connor that sheds light on a unique and little know effort during World War II. Military Occupational Specialist Code 442 was assigned to some names you may recognize; Mickey Rooney, Sammy Davis Jr, Mel Brooks and Red Buttons. They were part of a special morale initiative to provide entertainment to troops on the front lines in areas deemed too dangerous for USO tours. Jeep Show units consisted of 3 soldiers who would provide the equivalent of a traveling vaudeville show. Because front line troops were constantly on the move, these contingents would conduct several performances a day. Robert B. O'Connor first became aware of this unique program when he was an executive with Proctor & Gamble. He was researching a failed marketing scheme led by Jim Hetzer called “The Oxydol Circus.” Hetzer's family informed O'Connor that their father was involved with Jeep Shows during WWII. Hezter would become the basis for the fictional main character in O'Connor's novel. Interestingly, he chose to also place the REAL Mickey Rooney in the novel. We spend some time discussing Rooney's career and his possible motivation for volunteering during World War II. Rooney was awarded a Bronze Star for his role with the Jeep Shows. O'Connor chose to involve his main character in the Battle of Bulge, not only because it was a significant part of the war in Europe but also because it highlighted the often unrecognized role of “Team SNAFU” during that clash. Team SNAFU described the role of traditionally non-combat personnel like clerks, supply and medical personnel who were forced to take up arms in the protection of Bastogne. Jeep Show is a delightful and compelling novel that puts readers right on the front lines and introduces us to the often unheralded contributions of support troops like those who carried the 442 MOS.

For all its star power, courtesy of Helen Reddy, Shelley Winters, Jim Dale, Red Buttons, and Mickey Rooney, the Disney live-action-meets-animated adventure did only flittering box office. But now, decades later, was the movie as misunderstood as Pete? How does the Oscar-nominated ballad “Candle on the Water” hold up against other Disney songs? Bonus content alert: We finally, at long last, put to rest the “Ghostbusters” vs “I Want A New Drug” debate. And by “put to rest”, we mean “have the most epic argument we've ever had on the podcast”. How will it turn out? Well, just like Swayze and Grey, we pass this chemistry test with flying colors. And we're better kissers. Stay (Just a Little Bit Longer) for episode 80 of Opening Weekend!

Full Speed ahead, lads, for this week learning about our Third Ernest Borgnine episode, 1972's the Poseidon adventure. We are talking about Roddy McDowell's mixed up accent, so it is! As well as the largest underwater earthquake in history, grassing up Grandpa Joe for being a benefit cheat and why everyone in this hated thier fellow cast Members. --- The Poseidon Adventure is a 1972 American disaster film directed by Ronald Neame, produced by Irwin Allen, and based on Paul Gallico's 1969 novel of the same name. It has an ensemble cast including five Oscar winners: Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Shelley Winters and Red Buttons. The plot centers on the fictional SS Poseidon, an aging luxury liner on her final voyage from New York City to Athens before it is scrapped. On New Year's Eve, it is overturned by a tsunami. Passengers and crew are trapped inside, and a preacher attempts to lead a small group of survivors to safety. It is in the vein of other all-star disaster films of the early-mid 1970s such as Airport (1970), Earthquake (1974), and The Towering Inferno (1974). It was released in December 1972 and was the highest-grossing film of 1973, earning over $125 million worldwide. It won two Academy Awards,[3] a Golden Globe Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award.[4] A sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, also based on a novel by Gallico, was released in 1979.

Joe Cirillo An Offer I couldn't Refuse: Growing up in the Bronx, Bellmore's Joe Cirillo used to pitch pennies on the street corner, and when he amassed enough money, he'd go straight to the movies. So in the mid-60s, fate seemed to be following when he found himself a New York City Police officer on the beat outside a Manhattan complex where stars such as Phil Silvers and Red Buttons lived. "They knew me as Joe the cop," he said. Making acquaintance with these celebrities led to more than just getting a glimpse of their starlight. "How would you like to be an actor," he said were the words of director Mike Nichols that embarked him on a film industry career. Of course, the New York City cop was definitely skeptical, but eventually succumbed to Nichols' assurances that they would simply turn him into one. Soon enough, Cirillo interviewed with Paramount and landed a role in The Godfather. Unfortunately his scene was cut, but he can be seen throughout one of the film's most famous sequences. Still, nothing was going to keep him away, especially since the presence of Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and James Caan didn't affect his ability to remain professional. "It was inspiring," he said. He later found a voice in several smaller projects, but the next phase in his career began when he was hired to provide security for Telly Savalas on Kojak. Taken with Cirillo after a year of service, the star told him, "Once you retire, come to California and you've got a job." "I retired and became his right hand man," Cirillo said. Initially he obtained work as a technical advisor, before moving on to writing. With the show's scribes coming to him for ideas, he realized his personal experiences could be put to better use. "I'm in production meetings, I read the scripts, I make adjustments. [I thought] why can't I write myself," he said. Unfortunately, a script approved by Savalas never was shot because the show was canceled. The writing went on hold, as Kojak was spun off into Eischeid, and he nabbed a co-starring role next to Joe Don Baker as Detective Malfita. After its short life and speaking roles in Splash and Ghostbusters, Cirillo sold a screenplay in 1990, which was never shot. Today, he partners with fellow screenwriter Marc Baron for Oroloro Entertainment. With mostly romantic comedies looking for backers, they inked a three-picture, $20 million deal with investors from Dubai in 2001. This time, the September 11th attacks put a hold on all business relations with Dubai, thus killing the projects. Since then, the bad economy has slowed things but he knows one break can open doors on everything else. "You get one going, they all go," Cirillo said. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support
