Unit 14: St. Gregory Palamas: An Introduction, Prof. Christopher VeniaminEpisode 6bis: Triumph of Ascetic Theology Over Philosophical Speculation (Better Sound Quality)Episode 6bis of “Gregory Palamas: An Introduction” is mainly an *enhanced sound quality* version of the original episode (with new title credits at the beginning, and an end card, plus an appeal for support tagged on at the end), which introduces the "Hesychast Controversy" of the 14th century in the declining decades of the Christian Roman Empire. The sixth episode presents the differing perspectives of Palamas' three theological opponents, Barlaam, Akindynus and Gregoras, who curiously shared a common intellectualistic approach to matters theological, which gradually, since Augustine of Hippo, became the fundamental approach of the West: philosophical speculation.Themes covered in this episode include why the essence-energies distinction is not ditheism; Palamas' disarming distinction between “Antilogia” and “Homologia”; St. Gregory held hostage by the Ottoman Turkss in 1354; and the outcome of Palamas' discussion with the Turkish Mullah.Q&As related to Episode 6 available in The Professor's Blog.Recommended background reading: Christopher Veniamin, ed., Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies (Dalton PA: 2022); The Transfiguration of Christ in Greek Patristic Literature (2022); and The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation: "Theosis" in Scripture and Tradition (2016).The Happy Writer with Marissa MeyerAuthors, from debuts to bestsellers, chat about books, writing, publishing, and joy. Today Fr. Anthony wanted to share some ideas he's been playing with, resulting from his study of St. Gregory Palamas, theology (e.g. essence and energy), and relationships. Enjoy the show!
Eastern Orthodoxy is a complex religion with many cultural and historical influences. In this episode I break down some important history in the progression of Orthodox views on the Trinity and salvation, and why these views are misaligned with what the bible teaches. We will look at the evolution of church history via influences from pagan converts, Greek philosophy and parallels with mysticism. Had a grand talk with my mom last week. Turning philosophical it was about the organ of vision, the sensus divinitatis, that characterizes human nature; we cannot help but spectate about transcendence. This episode's latter half touches on ancient copyists errors in the process of biblical formation; concerning truth it's better to be frank than pompous (re. covering up embarrassments). I also variously muse about politicians who go vacant in front of cameras, what to do when you're outgunned in a conversation, and how the Dems might play 81million's next roll out. Come laugh and think with me.

Episode 2: The Emperor's 6 QuestionsThe second episode in this series of presentations discusses the 3rd Hesychast Council of 1351, with St. Gregory championing the Orthodox Faith against the philosophical theology of Nicephorus Gregoras, the Christian Roman Empire's leading intellectual of this period. Gregoras is the third and most formidable theological opponent of Palamas.Themes covered in this 2nd Episode include bishops' confession of faith at consecration, iconography, the distinction between “God” and “Godhead”, and the six questions posed by Emperor John VI Cantacuzenus at the Council of 1351.Q&As related to Episode 2 available in The Professor's Blog: https://mountthabor.com/blogs/the-professors-blogRecommended background reading: Christopher Veniamin, ed., Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies (Dalton PA: 2022).TIMESTAMPS00:00 The Council of 135100:44 Nicephorus Gregoras 01:15 Two Issues: Addition to Bishops' Confession and Iconoclasm of the Hesychasts06:07 Iconography 06:41 Theophanes the Greek 11:45 Main topic of Council “God” and “Godhead” or “Divinity”13:34 Accusation of Ditheism and Polytheism 13:44 Tomos and Synodicon 15:09 “Antilogia” and “Homologia”17:50 “Another Synod”, 5th Session 19:43 The Emperor's 6 Questions20:13 Question 1: Validity of Distinction 20:28 Question 2: Divine Energy created / uncreated20:51 Question 3: Simplicity of God22:00 Question 4: Meaning of “Theotes”23:35 Question 5: Divine Energy is God Himself25:25 Question 6: Our Participation in God26:02 Conclusion It is hoped that these presentations will help the enquireThe Happy Writer with Marissa MeyerAuthors, from debuts to bestsellers, chat about books, writing, publishing, and joy.
Note: at 1:03:45 I said St Cytil of Jerusalem and meant Leontius of Jerusalem. Aristo-Scholastic specialist Tim Gordon joins me to cover the five desiderata and how they solve some of the philosophical issues of their time. We will also comment on the value and high status Aristotle had for certain common saints between Orthodoxy and Rome, like St. Maximos and St. John of Damascus. We will also discuss the aspects of Aquinas Tim sees as most relevant for today in combatting modern and post-modern errors. Questions Covered: 01:45 – How is it remotely right that annulment due to canonical form means that a person who was baptized Catholic but left the church in their teens and was married in a protestant church isn’t really considered married by the Catholic Church and they could get it annulled if they came back? How does this actually work and what am I misunderstanding because I don’t see how that’s remotely justified 10:42 – What would you say to a protestant who doesn’t see the need to go to church on Sunday? 15:03 – Is it wrong to address the Angel Gabriel as “archangel”? I have learned from Wikipedia that he is an archangel 2nd in command. Is it a Catholic teaching to acknowledge Gabriel as archangel, what is the difference between the two? 18:48 – Since the LXX was the basis for our current Bible, why weren’t all of the LXX’s books included in the Bible? 21:15 – Question 1: When are Catholics required to give their full assent to the teachings of the Church? I heard an apologist mentioned that we do not have to follow Pope Francis's teaching on the death penalty since he was making a prudential judgment. 23:15 – Question 2: Since the Latin Church is in communion with Byzantine Rite Catholic Churches. Does that mean that Rome has implicitly canonized the Saints in the Eastern Church that were Orthodox since these saints were after the Great Schism like Gregory of Palamas? 24:28 – Jimmy, how do you respond to non-Catholics who ask about the number of Catholics who publicly criticize the Pope – they question our claim of unity. 31:58 – Please shed light on what this is about. Matt 27: 52-53. the tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his 35:00 – Can you explain purgatory in adult terms. 41:58 – What is transubstantiation? Is there a good example of change in substance in anything besides Eucharist that would help people understand Eucharistic transubstantiation? 47:43 – If (or when) we welcome the Eastern Orthodox Churches back into the fold – what could that mean for the Table of Contents for our Bibles? What books could plausibly make the cut, so to speak? 3 Maccabees but not 4 Maccabees? 51:55 – I know of holy water and blessed salt to protect my family from evil. What else should parents know to protect their families? …
On the second Sunday of Lent, the Orthodox Church celebrates St. Gregory of Palamas, a 14th-century bishop of Thessaloniki. St. Gregory taught that God is truly present in the world, especially through silent prayer. Also on this Sunday, the Orthodox Church also reads the Gospel passage about the paralytic who is lowered through the roof of a house so that Jesus can forgive his sins. But, what does the celebration of St. Gregory have to do with this paralytic? As we'll see in today's episode, walking the Way is not only about understanding the connection between the two, but it's about living in trust.

Eastern Orthodox philosopher David Bradshaw and Roman Catholic philosopher Christopher Tomaszewski discuss Palamism and Thomism. The topics range from the Patristics to interpretations of St. Thomas Aquinas and heavy-hitting philosophy on virtual distinctions, modal collapse, and the energies of God.
Today Snek and I cover the development of Roman / latin theology in the second millennium of the West and how it compares to that of Byzantium and the east, as well as the First Millennium. We will look at the papal evolution and revolution in relation to the question of grace: it is created or uncreated? What about Trent? What about the notion of the Church as juridical and mystical "bodies," the geopolitical influences, the divergent sacramentologies, the Protestant revolution, etc.

We have a lot of requests for introduction texts and this one is a classic - used by many Orthodox Seminaries, Byzantine Theology is now our Discord Group's standard text. The book is an introductory overview by well-known Orthodox theologian and scholar of the 20th century, Fr. Long requested, I cover the topic of the best of the worst of the ancient heresies and how the same spirit behind them has manifested today under different names and guises. From Arianism to gnosticism to Origenism, we see how the realm of the demonic lacks any creativity. With evil, we get the same dialectical traps we always, have, as Hellenism and its atheism are rehashed in ways you don't expect.

Egy hatalmas zöld kézzel teszi mozgásképtelenné a Pollux IV-hez érkező Enterprise-t az Olümposzról visszavonult Apolló, a szebb napokat is megélt istenség pedig rövidesen a felszínen is csúnya haragra gerjed, amikor kiderül, hogy a kedélyes üdvözlettel fogadott legénység nem szed neki babérlevelet, és egyetlen őzet sem hajlandó elejteni a tiszteletére. Aktuális adásunkban az ’Istenek alkonya’ című epizódról beszélgetünk. Rövid hírszekció: • A Tarantino ötletéből készült forgatókönyvben valószínűleg Kirk kapitány legénysége áll a középpontban, hiszen a legutóbbi nyilatkozatából kiderült, hogy a “Chris Pine idővonalat” preferálja. • Vajon melyik klasszikus TNG helyszínt szeretnék a rajongók viszontlátni a Picard sorozatban? A kibeszélő tartalmából: • Michael Forest a Star Trek: Continues sorozatban újra eljátssza Apolló szerepét: a Pilgrim of Eternity című epizódban a történet közvetlen folytatását láthatjuk, ahol számos utalást tesznek az előzményekre.

Classical Theist has agreed to come on to begin our debate on the issue of the essence-energy distinction and the uncreated energies of God, contrasted with the Thomistic and later Roman-defined doctrine of absolute simplicity.

A classic old talk that has become popular on YT that never made it to the podcast stream. What are the central differences between Latin and Eastern theology? Is there are common thread of difference that gives rise to two different approaches to divinity, knowledge, revelation and eschatology? Yes, I argue. I discuss Augustine, Aquinas, absolute divine simplicity as borrowed from Aristotle and Plato, the Logos, the Greek triad, I Am as "pure being," Anselm, the analogia entis/chain of being, apophatic theology, theosis, created grace, divine energies, divine ideas, and the supposed 'beatific vision.'
A reply to various so-called Orthodox and Roman Catholic apologist attempts to reply to my essay below. Ultimately these attempts fail because they do not understand hypostatic properties and the orthodox distinctions of will, nature, person and operation. As a result, both faux "Orthodox" and Roman Catholics congeal into a mass lump of heretical perennialism, as generic as their generic theism:https://jaysanalysis.com/2017/05/27/filioquism-is-arian-subordinationism-applied-to-the-spirit/

On the Sunday of St. Gregory of Palamas we celebrate the wisdom of the Orthodox Faith to marry the physical and the spiritual and escape the false dichotomy of the created and the Uncreated. In other words, no more cubbyholing our lives into the sacred and the secular!
Fr. John shares about the healing of the man with palsy, let down through the roof by his four friends (from Mark 2:1-12). Chris Moody is a Greek Orthodox Chaplain for the Army whose scholarly focus is the works of St. Gregory Palamas and the Eastern teaching of the divine energies and the Triads, being fluent in koine Greek. In this conversation we discuss the different conceptions of epistemology (including the Nous) in Eastern theology as contrasted with both Roman Catholic and Protestant/evangelical theology in the West. We also cover the history of these differences, as well as Thomistic scholasticism and the filioque in contrast to the debate of Palamas and Barlaam the Augustinian, with the trek of the West fulfilling Palamas’ prophetic statement about absolute divine simplicity and created grace ending in atheism.http://www.jaysanalysis.com
