I believe that much of our thinking is automatic, happening without our permission, consent, or approval. This automatic thinking often generates emotions aligned with those thoughts. By pausing and taking a moment to notice my thinking, I practice discerning whether it's truly my thoughts or just an automatic response. More often than not, it's the latter. This awareness then gives me the opportunity to ask myself what I actually want to believe about the situation and what meaning I want to assign to it. From there, I can approach the situation with curiosity, which in turn helps me become calmer and more creative in my response. Thoughts On Breathing Breathing is definitely one of the pillars of feeling good. We often take it for granted because it happens automatically, yet it's essential to life. I'm a strong advocate for being intentional about breathing and have done various breathing exercises, including Wim Hof training and other fun workshops. Every day, I make a point to be aware of my breath, especially in the mornings when I go to the lake. While throwing a stick for my dog and watching the sunrise, I also focus on my breathing. It feels great to be mindful of my breath with intention. Bullying Story In high school, I was frequently bullied and constantly on edge. One day, overwhelmed by my emotions and the recent loss of my father, I verbally lashed out at a bully in class, and afterward, I never saw him again. Last year, I reached out to apologize for my harshness, only for him to admit he didn't even remember the incident. This resolution finally brought me peace after decades of feeling guilty. Leadership is an art that is cultivated through discipline and practice. Great leaders are not born but rather made through a series of habits and actions that shape their character and abilities. In this episode, John discusses the habits of amazing leaders and how they can be developed to become amazing leaders. Listen to this episode to learn more: [00:00] - Intro [01:09] - Qualities of great leaders [01:37] - Having a morning routine [04:00] - Deciding ahead of time [06:33] - Doing what's right [08:02] - Practicing servant leadership [11:55] - Closing remarks KEY INSIGHTS: Waking up at the right time, with or without an alarm, is important for starting the day off well. You must start the day off on the right foot and avoid harmful habits. Pre-decide and prioritize important tasks and activities, including spending time with your spouse to improve productivity and relationships. Do the right thing instead of taking the easy route when facing challenges. It can lead to better outcomes in the long term. Prioritize the development of others by creating a culture that fosters growth and caring for individuals, helping them become exceptional leaders. NOTABLE QUOTES: "The absolute best leaders are not always the smartest, the hardest working. They're not necessarily the best-connected people. But the most amazing leaders out there intentionally commit to strategic habits that produce fantastic results." "The difference between where you are and where you might want to be is the pain that you are unwilling to endure." "Leaders who get the most out of their people are those who care most about their people." "We don't have to like everyone that's on our team. But they need to know that we care about them, no matter what." "The best leaders are never about themselves. They are about others, building into others, helping them become great leaders." "Leaders who get the most out of their people are those who care most about their people." "In order for us to be servant leaders to be putting the needs of others before ourselves, we need to start always with having that other person in mind for every single time we are involved with that person." If you want to be an exceptional leader for those you lead or an amazing friend/significant other for those you care about, it is crucial to understand the habits that drive amazing leaders. In his continuing discussion on this topic, John shares the remaining four habits the most amazing leaders consistently exhibit. This episode serves as a conclusion to the previous episode, where John explained the first four habits. Listen to this episode to learn more: [00:00] - Intro [01:40] - Recap of Habits of Amazing Leaders (Part 1) [01:53] - Don't quit until the job's done [03:27] - Raise your self-expectations [04:59] - Inspire yourself first [06:32] - Get back up and keep going [09:38] - Closing remarks KEY INSIGHTS: When it's done, it's done and not before: Leaders must not quit until the job is done and make the hard decisions required to lead their teams through challenges. Raise your self-expectations: To become an exceptional leader, leaders need to raise their own expectations and strive for excellence to inspire their teams to do the same. Inspire yourself first: The best leaders inspire others, but they can only do this if they are investing in themselves first. Get back up and keep going: Even in the face of adversity or failure, great leaders do not give up. They learn from their mistakes, adapt their strategies, and keep moving forward toward their goals. NOTABLE QUOTES: "The best leaders are intentionally committed to those habits that produce the absolute best results for themselves first, and for their teams, their families." "As leaders, if we haven't determined ahead of time for ourselves, that we're going to continue to do the job to do the thing to lead well, all the way through, then there's no way we can expect our teams, our families to do the same thing." "Keep raising those expectations of ourselves. Because when we do that, it has a fantastic and positive impact on those around us." "You have to invest in yourself as a leader. If you're not investing in yourself, you're not going to have anything to give to your people, to your families." "Learning how to inspire yourself, and myself first, is how we're going to be able to set the mark, to be able to help others get where they need to be, or where they want to be." Website: www.youevolvingnow.com Podcast: You Evolving Now Book: EVOLVE By Andre Young Book: 7 Ways to Lead: Evolve Professionally & Personally By Andre Young Book: The Leader's Toolbox: Tools to EVOLVE your Leadership … and that of those you're leading By Andre Young Your Life Prior to ‘You Evolving Now' I was a mental health therapist for 19 years. I spent 15 years in alternative schools and partial hospitalization settings. That was great working with kids, adults, and families. I did outpatient, marriage counciling, individual and group work, and was in psychiatric facilities. It was a great ride and I loved doing it and I thought I would retire doing it. I have to say, if you're in this profession, great for you. I felt out of love with how the system takes care of the caregiver. What Were The Challenges You Faced? Caregivers do a poor job of taking care of themselves. We are givers. So the system would do best by taking care of you as well. Overall, it was a real struggle. Then I started to come up with some of my own concepts. To be honest, I burned out. Now I get to talk on stages and help organizations and help people lead through or prevent burnout. Sometimes you can't prevent it, it's there. So if it's there already and it's hit a few of your people, your leaders, your organization, your team, how do you lead through it? It is possible. What Have You Learned From Your Children About Mindfulness? I have a 22 year old daughter, a 19 year old son, a 14 year old son, and a 3 year old daughter. All of them are always my forever babies, love 'em to death. They taught me about patience. If you have mulitple kids, you know they are all different. In my experience, the one who is most challenging is the one who is most like you, and the one who is least like you. You love them. When I did my book, Seven Ways To Love, I explained that love is a verb, something that you do. Most people depend on the feeling. You love your kids, that comes with having kids. How you do love, needs to be more intentional. The book, The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman changed my life. I asked everyone in my family about their love language and found out their top two. And I learned them. And you ask every year because it can change a lot. You don't want to be speaking somebody's old language. With my kids, I'm words of affirmation and I'm quality time. I love spending quality time and giving words of affirmation to them. My daughter told me, tell me you love me and leave me alone. My two sons are quality time and my 3 year old is play, she's quality time. Take a listen and EVOLVE as Shelly Wilkinson and I explore the concept of selling, what makes a great salesperson, how to do it, and more! Shelly is the Director of Sales for TRICOM and enjoys being both a resource for her staff and clients. I wish "Sales" was a subject we were required to take in school; as we're all salespeople! The truth is... you, I, we may not be selling actual products; but must sell our ideas personally and professionally, ourselves as a whole to be in and stay in relationships, products if you have a business, and the list can go on and on! Let's evolve our selling skills and also find out what top companies are looking for. Shelly describes herself as loyal, caring, and pragmatic, which is evident as she explains her business philosophy: “Your word is everything. Do what you say you're going to do, take care of your clients, and pick up the phone to communicate versus emailing.” For more about TRICOM, a top provider in staffing administrative and financial services: https://www.tricom.com/For more Leadership & Work/Life Harmony with Andre Young: https://youevolvingnow.com/
On this episode of Come Rain or Shine, Andre Young, Founder of You Evolving Now LLC, joins the show to discuss his career journey. A former athlete and mental health therapist, Andre unpacks his drive as an entrepreneur and desire to motivate organizations through meaningful leadership practices. As he notes, the problem with some leaders is they marry their vision and the path they forge as opposed to their ‘why'; however, this often leads to burnout and disillusion. While many managers try to stir their team to outcomes, Andre argues it's far better for them to make their name synonymous with what they do, perform beyond good intentions, and inspire the same mentality within their influence. Danny “Easy D.” Dohrmann is a witness to the expansion of Music of the Mississippi. In the 80's and 90's, Easy D. and his company, Satin Star Productions, rocked the San Francisco Bay Area. Easy D.'s venues included dropping into some of the most famous clubs in San Francisco Bay Area: Silks, The Palladium, Daz Club/1015, Club Metropolis, The Design Center. He also shared the stage with a young group called The Wrekin Cru and a kid by the name of Andre Young, Pebbles, E-40, and Sir Mix-a-Lot. Without THE PROS and 5 other regional record pools (Miami, Houston, Chicago/Vegas, Los Angeles, and Seattle), New York Hip Hop, Chicago House, The Miami Sound, Freestyle, Los Angeles Gansta Rap, The Bay Sound, and The Northwest Mix-A-Lot sound would never had flourished. ** We celebrate the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin who was an American singer and pianist.
