DOI: 10.13056/acamh.30348 In this In Conversation podcast, Professor Sophie von Stumm, Anna Brown, and Emily Wood explore child language development with a specific focus on the influence of children's early life language experiences on their speech development and educational achievement. Sophie, Anna, and Emily are part of the Hungry Mind Lab which studies the causes and consequences of individual differences in cognitive and social emotional development across the life course. Sophie is the Director of the Hungry Mind Lab, Emily is the Project Coordinator, and Anna is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Lab. Discussion points include: Insight into what the Hungry Mind Lab is. Why the team choose to focus on language and language as a key skill for success in education. The relationship between mother's everyday language usage and child's outcomes and performance in school, and how this relates to mother's socioeconomic status. Are inequalities due to how mothers speak to their children, or do they result from the economic, social, and political inequalities in which mothers raise their children? Should child development research be broadened to include other caregivers, for example fathers? We met Emily Wood at BBC Radio Devon in the Summer at their live on air Menopause Cafe. Emily has been presenting the weather on local BBC TV and radio for over 15 years, and also works as a journalist for BBC Radio Devon where she gets to share stories about the amazing people and places in Devon. Emily asked if she could turn the tables and interview us and get all the questions answered that her and her friends wanted to know about menopause. We obviously said yes! We ask Emily about what it is like being a working mum in the media and she also tells us some fascinating facts about clouds (you'll want to know these!). And Emily asks us about Menopause- what exactly is it? How do we know when we are in peri menopause? HRT? And what we would say to our younger pre menopausal selves……. Oh and Chin hairs! In the Book Collective book of the series, Twelve Moons. A Year Under A Shared Sky by Caro Giles. This week we read chapter 7 Claiming Moon, Caro is beginning to unravel, she's allowing herself to be vulnerable in this chapter, there's a camping holiday and also Caro's birthday to celebrate. Lou finds some fun news you might have missed this week (dinosaurs on the Isle of Wight) and Jinty has found some new research that has found genetic links between endometriosis and IBS and other gastro-intestinal disorders. We have been challenged by one of our Collective to a new WI, it's definitely a giddy one! In this bonus episode, we have a chat with soprano Emily Wood, a featured soloist in the recent concert performance of BWV 147 at Alex's church. We hear about Emily's personal experience singing this wonderfully challenging solo which is nestled in the very heart of this cantata; we also reflect on the whole 10-movement masterpiece. Audio recordings of BWV 147 in this episode are from the recording of this concert, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Orange, CA, USA, featuring Cathedral Singers and Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Alex Guebert. Keep an eye out for the second bonus episode soon -- the blooper reel from Season 3!
Listeners! Thank you for 100,000 episode downloads! It's Bachtoberfest, which means we talk about a silly piece by Bach -- this year's is a little parable about a tobacco pipe. We also read some of your comments and suggestions, we drink some Hefeweizen, and we talk about our plans for season 4, coming in 2024. TWO MORE BONUS EPISODES are on their way soon -- a blooper reel for season 3, and a post-concert interview with soprano and previous podcast guest Emily Wood. LOCAL LISTENERS in Southern California: Info about the Christmas Carol Festival organized/directed by Christian at his church: 3:00pm, Sunday December 10, Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 23262 El Toro Rd, Lake Forest, CA 92630, USA. And check out the Bach: Coffee and Cantata online group organized by listener Thierry -- a place for like-minded Bach lovers to meet and discuss cantatas in the context of the Sunday on which they were written. We mention this in the episode. As always, thanks to Netherlands Bach Society for the use of our audio examples, and Sydney LaCom for our artwork. Until next year... enjoy those moments...
Thank you for listening this week as Abbey is back on the podcast interviewing Emily Wood, the Founder and Director of Mosaic Hope. Mosaic Hope is a nonprofit that desires to see "every child and family surrounded by a community of support." If you cannot tell, Abbey and Emily are friends in real life, and really enjoyed their conversation today full of practical advice on entering into the world of serving those experiencing the foster care system. We hope you leave this episode knowing there are people that were in your shoes when beginning their process of serving in the world of foster care. Education and experience, little by little, will help quiet those fears you may be experiencing of the unknowns. This is a big topic and "issue," but you have a place to fill and serve here, we all do. This episode helps you see where and how you may be needing to plug in! Our guest Emily Wood shares her Bach fandom with us as we explore the unexpectedly funny "Kaffeekantate." Though Bach never wrote an opera, this was perhaps the closest he got. And though accused by contemporaries for being stuck in the old heavy contrapuntal style, Bach absolutely could write in the newer, lighter Italian style. Emily shares with us her favorite points from the Coffee Cantata, including the characterization of opera voice types used by Bach, and a surprising fact about the ending. Emily Wood is an accomplished soprano, composer, and educator, and also a self-described Bachophile. emilywoodmusic.com The Coffee Cantata as staged and performed by the Netherlands Bach Society

My friend (and former YSA) joins us to bravely talk about the pain and trauma experienced as a nanny in Germany. Emily later returned to Germany and served in the same area—and had a chance encounter with those responsible for her pain/trauma and talks about feelings of God's love for them. However, feeling God's love for them and forgiveness, didn't fully resolve the trauma as Emily was still rejecting herself. Emily bravely shares her journey to see, address, and solve trauma. It's a remarkable story. A story that will help others working to solve trauma and those wanting to help them. Thank you, Emily, for being on the podcast. I learned so much from you. I wish I had understood the principles and concepts you shared much earlier. Thank you your courage to be on the podcast. You are awesome! On this episode, we're joined by Emily Wood, executive director of the Indiana Wildlife Federation, to talk about her organization and the Recovering America's Wildlife Act. Each state has a federally mandated list of species of greatest conservation need - essentially species at a higher risk of becoming threatened or endangered. Tallied together, this represents about one-third of all wildlife in America. While the Pittman-Robertson Fund and hunter/angler license dollars have done a tremendous job of recovering game species over the last century, many other species are in crisis. The Recovering America's Wildlife Act will provide the funding for states to implement State Wildlife Action plans to recover those species and keep them off the endangered species list. Emily talks about the work of the Indiana Wildlife Federation, how they work with the National Wildlife Federation on priorities like recovering wildlife, and what the Recovering America's Wildlife Act would mean for Indiana. The National Wildlife Federation Outdoors Podcast is supported by Rep Your Water and the intro music has been provided by National Park Radio. When it comes to diets, they are only focused on one thing-the physical result. Yes we all want to look good, but when focusing just on the physical we are missing some very key components that help us obtain these desirable changes and make them permanent. In this Episode I talk about how mindset and finding your "Why" are the 2 key components that create LASTING DESIRABLE change. We often don't dig deep enough to discover the emotional attachments behind making a change, which is crucial to keeping you motivated on the path to long term success. Unlike the million fad diets out there, a plant-based lifestyle ties in all elements to help you feel your best every single day for the rest of your life. My Plant-Based Superpower Mom Facebook Group focuses heavily on mindset, and if you haven't already requested to join, I strongly encourage you to do so HERE. The right support truly is key. Thanks for listening and enjoy this week's episode.
