Grief doesn't wait for the perfect moment—and neither does oral cancer. In this powerful episode of the Raving Patients Podcast, Dr. Len Tau welcomes Dr. Parul Dua-Makkar to share how personal tragedy transformed her career and fueled a mission to save lives. After losing her brother—also a dentist—to oral cancer at just 34, Parul now advocates for early diagnosis, clinical vigilance, and emotional healing within dentistry. This isn't just a clinical conversation—it's a raw, inspiring look at how loss can fuel purpose, and how every provider can be a part of the legacy of prevention. You'll also learn how grief doesn't follow a linear path, the emotional complexity of legacy, and why speaking about difficult topics can be the most powerful way to connect and lead in the dental community. Dr. Parul reminds us all: life is short, but the impact you make can be lasting. Some of the powerful insights from this episode include: Early detection saves lives: Persistent red or white lesions lasting more than two weeks must be evaluated—biopsies are non-negotiable. Technology is a tool, not a replacement: Light-based oral screening aids are helpful, but only biopsies offer definitive answers. Grief is complex—and valid: Whether from personal or professional loss, grief affects every part of your life and practice. Processing it is crucial to continue showing up fully. Legacy is not about length, but impact: What you leave behind—through your words, your work, or how you treat others—matters more than you know. Support and community are essential: Healing doesn't happen alone. Sharing stories helps others feel seen, heard, and less isolated in their struggles. — Key Takeaways 00:45 Introduction to Leaving a Legacy 03:26 The Impact of Oral Cancer 11:45 Grief and Its Many Forms 20:54 Understanding Legacy 24:23 Life Interrupted: A Book of Lessons 27:30 Speaking Out on Oral Cancer Awareness 30:53 Lightning Round Q&A   — Connect with Dr. Parul Dua-Makkar: Website: www.parulduamakkar.com Instagram: @duagoodjob Coaching & Resources: duagoodjob.com Explore her free grief and cancer support resources, check out her speaking topics, or grab a copy of her book "Life Interrupted: Dr. Dua's Survival Guide" available on Amazon.   — Learn proven dental marketing strategies and online reputation management techniques at DrLenTau.com. Dr. Parul Dua Makkar joins the founder of DentalTown and one of Dr. Manu Dua's most esteemed mentors, Dr. Howard Farran. Topics discussed: Manu's immersion in the DentalTown Community - a place where he could be vulnerable. Timing of Manu's death. Why the book is titled "Life Interrupted." Howard's advice to beating burnout - "your attitude determines your altitude, your attitude beats your aptitude." The Dua Family journey from India to Canada. What Howard learned from lecturing in 50 countries over 30 years. Howard on a toxic workplace- "When you do things that you don't like to do for money, it always ends badly." The Golden Rule: Treat other people how you would want to be treated. Howard's lasting thoughts on Manu: "Manu was not your average bear, he would listen to you with empathy and concern, and share back what he knows.  And he was hoping that it would be a relationship that would continue.  He was the long-term connected relationship guy. And once you were connected to that guy, you had a friend for life." LIFE INTERRUPTED: Dr. Dua's Survival Guide |The Podcast Companion|

Welcome to the podcast companion for the book, Life Interrupted: Dr. Dua's Survival Guide.    The book is a series of blogs which were written by my late younger brother, Dr. Manu Dua, as he battled metastatic cancer at age 34. After Manu battled multiple cancer surgeries, chemotherapy, cancer radiation treatment, immunotherapy, he learnt how to speak again, how to eat, how to swallow, how to chew, how to walk, at the time of a worldwide pandemic, COVID-19.   And somewhere, amidst all the pain, loss, and despair, he found the peace and happiness that he had not attained while he was healthy. He learnt from his mistakes, fought fear, found beauty in small things, wisdom in parents, and never lost hope.   Never did he question his fate nor stop fighting.     I am his sister and your host, Dr. Parul Dua Makkar.  Manu died before this book or podcast could reach you.  But it was his hope to help you see that even in the worst of times and under the worst of circumstances, the human mind, body, and soul, have a remarkable capacity to heal.  That we are more powerful than we can ever imagine.   Thank you for being here, please enjoy!   For more information on Manu's writing: His book. His first article on cancer. Manu's last article published posthumously.

Parul's brother, Dr. Manu Dua, passed away in March 2021 at the young age of 34. Manu was a general dentist and practice owner in Calgary, Alberta. We highly encourage all of our listeners to read this book! This is a very special episode. Today I welcome general dentist and practice owner Dr. Parul Dua Makkar, the sister of Manu Dua, a dentist who passed away earlier this year from oral cancer at the early age of 34. Manu was her younger and only brother, and now Dr. Makkar is shining a light on his life and his writings. She has compiled and published his series of blogs that he wrote during his fight with cancer. This episode focuses on her story of her experiences and lessons learned through the process of escorting her brother through the end of his life as well as the goals of his book of finding your inner peace. Compiling, publishing and promoting his book is part of Dr. Makkar's current healing process. “This was his message. He was very vocal about his journey. It is to share his wisdom that he felt as he faced mortality… One of the things he talks about is hope.” We are often bound by our own fears and fears of failing. But we can all continue to learn from the opportunities we have. So one of his goals was to help others see that it is okay to try new things and fail. Just give it a try, and focus on the good things in your life. She also stresses his other point of not fearing your death, but rather working to leave something behind that is good for humankind. Are there some things now that will cause others to remember you? If not, what can you change in your life? This book is a poignant read that is written from the point of view of someone who is facing his own mortality. The value of his words is beyond inspirational. “I hope this book becomes a wakeup call,” says Dr. Makkar “that life is short.” So, what makes you happy? Maybe now is the time for a change. Listen now to this episode for encouragement to take the necessary time to reflect on your life and your happiness to find the peace you deserve. Highlights from this episode: The importance of stepping back and reflecting on your work as a dentist Don't delay in questioning potential health problems you feel you may have; early detection is critical Looking at that feeling of invincibility that people often have Dealing with the “isolation” and other complications of going through treatment during COVID-19 How inspiring it is to hold on to hope The value of this book in finding peace within yourself Resources and links mentioned: Manu Dua's book: “Life Interrupted: Dr. Dua's Survival Guide” Dr. Makkar's email: Parul_dua@yahoo.com Watch Laura's podcasts on YouTube: Love Your Practice!
