In this fascinating trip to the Victorian era we learn about a world in which people had a much healthier relationship with death than we have today, and the roots of what became the popular practice of commercial mediumship in the UK and the U.S. Our guest Jennifer Ingraham collects, buys and sells antiques specfically related to death and mourning in the Victorian period. Her collection of unique objects includes memorial hair wreaths, clothing, post-mortem photography, viewing coffins, and a wide variety of curious ceremonial objects that were commonly used at the time.  She also shares fascinating stories about the spiritualist movement in the early 20th century and its views of death and the afterlife in contrast to the restricted, medicalized views held today. Some key points: How Queen Victoria influenced how we grieveHow the industrial revolution changed our relationship with deathWealth, power and social change Changes within the church, abundance of new denominations Science, medicine, and death rates Death Items of the Victorians: Spiritualism and the Seance Famous individuals that attended/hosted seances Spiritualism as entertainment (and its downfall)Changing views of death To see some of  Jennifer's collection visit:https://www.facebook.com/p/Stair-11-100054252080350/ABOUT JENNIFER: Jennifer Ingraham livesat the foot of the Beartooth mountains in rural Montana with her husband and two daughters. After growing up in a family of educators, Jennifer earned her undergraduate degree in secondary English education before choosing to pursue antiques as a full-time career.  Collecting, buying, and selling death and mourning related antiques has become her focus for the last decade. Her involvement in the field of mourning and death memorabilia, as well as her own personal losses, led to her to current pursuit of a Master's in Thanatology degree at Marian University.

“I can't just sit there and watch life pass me by - I wasn't built for that,” says Keisha Robinson, a Brian Connection with this one. They first met when she ushered him to a seat at an AODA (Accessibility For Ontarians With Disabilities Act) round table event at King's University College, at Western for International Day For Persons With Disabilities. When, in fact, we have a more personal family/community connection to our first 2025 guest. Our first guest of the year and of February, Keisha Robinson describes herself as a social butterfly, now, but what was it that made her come out of her shell? She grew up with pain, was labeled “drama queen,” and with a diagnosis realised it all finally made sense. Keisha shares about her life lived (before and after) the progressively deteriorating muscular disease diagnosis she received as a teenager, about the umbrella of various symptoms and deterioration predictions and timelines of Muscular Dystrophy (MD, and the philosophy she has gained with her plans with work giving back to sick children in hospital and her study of disability. Robinson is working towards a double major in Childhood and youth studies and Thanatology—which is the study of death, dying, grief, and loss including all sorts of non-death losses. This week on Outlook we're learning more about her studies and discussing how to demystify loss and grief and normalise the open dialogue on these parts of life we all share. We explore the inaccessibility to be found out there (IE housing design) and hear about how it is to get around Western and King's University College as a wheelchair user, not to mention around the city she lives in, along with some of her tools for doing that. So while one host says he doesn't miss a friend he's never met, the guest might miss ice skating or swimming, while the other two hosts might miss seeing colours or video games and that's the cross-disability perspective in an example of a non-death loss we've been navigating grief over. It's one really important part of the “Outlook” umbrella we're showcasing on this show and with guests here, both past and present.

Where does the hatred towards Epigenetics, Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck, The Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics and finally Lysenko come from, where and how did it begin? Today we will launch an assault of historical revelations against a mystified truism of genetics and heredity which unless you were born before 1950 have always already been the dominant mode of thinking. We will investigate the earliest Sci-fi and the experimental science of the 1920s as we go looking for the Neo-Darwinists who in their blind appropriation discarded the materialist core of Charlie's teaching and replaced it with a metaphysical alchemical preformationism. We will go through NKVD files on the mountaineers case, read Evola and his alpine meditations, frighten ourselves with body-less living dog heads, crypts in princely villas of the bourgeoisie quarters of Moscow were people are said to be frozen alive. We will finally learn how the Rockefellers and its Fruit Fly Mafia made its way in to the USSR and who became their recruited intellectuals, linking up of course with the very heart and centre of underground anti-soviet activity. This and a lot more awaits you on this coming three hour journey. Enjoy!

Untethered: Healing the Pain from a Sudden Death

In today's podcast I interview Dr. Robert Niemeyer, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Psychology at the University of Memphis. Dr. Niemeyer is a leader in the field of Thanatology, the science or study of death, dying and bereavement. He has published 33 books, including the New Techniques of Grief Therapy: Bereavement and Beyond, and serves as the Editor of the journal of Death Studies. He is the author of over 500 articles and book chapters and a frequent workshop presenter. As a clinician and researcher, he is perhaps best known for his work on meaning making in grief and is currently working to advance a more adequate theory of grieving as a meaning-making process. Key points: In our interview we explore the meaning making process of grief after a sudden or unexpected death and the concept of narrative reconstruction used in meaning making. Dr. Niemeyer also demonstrates three techniques that can be used in therapy to facilitate meaning making after a traumatic loss each of three domains: 1) the story of the event, 2) the backstory, and 3) the creation of the self, or meaning of our lives, going forward. He used a technique called restorative retelling, developed by Dr. Ted Rynearson, to help find meaning with the story of the event. Dr. Niemeyer demonstrated this technique as an appropriate way to work with someone who is struggling with the details of the circumstances that ended their loved one's life. For the second domain, he showed us a way to restore connection with a deceased loved one to communicate what needs to be said. And finally, for the third domain he described a technique called composition work. This intervention uses objects such as stones to represent aspects of the self, such as, roles and feelings along with other articles to represent those who are important and loved in an individual's life. Then the objects and articles are rearranged on a table or sand tray at different life periods of a client's life including prior and post death, and in the future to help connect with different and emerging parts of the self. Dr. Niemeyer is also the Director of the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition and shares opportunities available at the institute for clinicians interested in specialized grief training. I have been fortunate to attend multiple trainings by Dr. Niemeyer over the years in person and online, and I have always left these trainings with greater insight about myself, a deeper understanding of grief and new ways to work with clients who are living with grief. In addition to the opportunities Dr. Niemeyer shared at the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition, he has also just released a Grief Therapy Masterclass entitled: Advanced Skills in Working through Loss. This class covers the meaning-based model he briefly addressed today along with a module on trauma-informed approach to loss, realigning relationships with the deceased and reinventing the self after loss. Information about this masterclass will be posted in our Facebook group, Talking About the Podcast Untethered with Dr. Levin, along with the books he mentioned. If you are living with traumatic grief, you may find it helpful to begin exploring meaning with your therapist or to begin exploring some of the resources Dr. Niemeyer recommended on your own.

Engaging in open conversations around death can be unsettling, but it is a reality that we must all confront. In this enlightening episode, Taya Dunn Johnson, a writer, speaker, mother, and recent master's degree graduate in thanatology from Marian University, sheds light on this often avoided subject. Johnson's insights, deeply rooted in her personal experience of losing her young husband to a sudden heart attack, challenge societal discomfort around death and stress the importance of preparation for our inevitable end.Johnson debunks the myth that discussing death invites it sooner, and stresses that planning for death is an act of love that can ease the emotional burden for our loved ones during a painful time. She also highlights the importance of preparing for the "business of death,"( including discussions around wills, passwords, and final wishes), and advocates for culturally appropriate grief support, with a particular focus on the African American experience. This impactful and thought-provoking conversation that could reshape your perspectives on life, death, and everything in between.Episode Resources:Article: “Please Read This Before You Post Another RIP on Social Media”Book: “Grieving While Black” by Breeshia WadeWhat's Next? What are your views, comments, or questions on navigating conversations around death and bereavement? When I first recorded this episode it was in response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary that was preceded by the supermarket shooting days earlier. With gun violence on the rise, more mass shootings, war in many countries, there is no time better than now to help our kids understand and make sense of what seems like senseless violence. Please listen to my brilliant guest, Barbara Rubel and how she shares her own story and provides us with a path forward for us and our kids. Please listen and please share. Gun violence has been heavy on everyone's mind with the horrific massacre at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York and just ten days later, the shooting of innocent lives at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. It makes sense that you have feelings about what's happened and are grieving the loss of life and innocence whether you know the victims or not. As parents, it hits us especially hard when we see innocent children killed. Sending our kids to school brings up anxiety and fear in us, and our sense of safety is gone. How do we live with the anxiety and fear we are all feeling? How do we make sense out of senseless violence? How do we make meaning out of something so tragic? Barbara Rubel, as a Thanatologist, is an expert in death, dying and bereavement. She helps people cope with, and move on from, sudden traumatic loss. Barbara and I talk about how we can process these tragedies, grieve the loss of the innocent lives, explain what's happened to our kids, take care of ourselves at this time and move through the pain. I have enormous respect for the work Barbara does, and I know you will love what she has to share. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we have to have these hard conversations with our kids. When you go to them, stay rooted in your strengths, explain death in a way that's age appropriate and aligned with your beliefs, and it's ok to show emotions to your children. Feeling sad is normal and natural, this IS sad. Preparing the Church for the Harvest
022. Biblical Foundations for Grief Ministry: An Interview with Julie Lynn Ashley

Preparing the Church for the Harvest

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2023 30:07

Julie Lynn Ashley is a grief coach with a passion for helping people who have experienced loss. Her ministry provides one-on-one support to those struggling with grief, offering a safe, open space for discussion and processing. She believes that grieving people need someone to sit with them through the process and stay attuned to important dates, and she encourages local churches to provide support by keeping funeral programs and following up on those dates. With a biblical foundation and a master's degree in thanatology, Julie Lynn is well-equipped to help those in need. Grief Ministry When Julie Lynn and her husband moved to Texas several years ago she was looking to get to know people and connect in the community. The wife of a couple they knew suggested she volunteer with a local hospice group. Though she had never done that type of work, she was willing to give it a chance. Almost immediately Julie Lynn was drawn to the bereavement side of the program. She realized she had a  God-given passion for people who had experienced this loss and were left with this giant hole in their life.  At a GriefShare meeting one evening, she felt this new calling in her life. She shares; “I was watching one of the videos, and the room was dark, and it kind of washed over me from head to toe, God saying, Julie Lynn, this is Act 2. This is what I want you to do with the rest of your life”.  At that moment she had no idea how things would play out and that she would get her Master's Degree of Science in Thanatology (death, grief, and bereavement). The local Hospice Chaplain provided resources and God provided mightily as she attended grad school. After receiving her degree she went to work in the Hospice industry, specifically on the bereavement side, doing brief follow-up calls with families. Then she transitioned into her ministry, where she is working one-on-one with people. She can go deeper with each individual than she was able to in the Hospice industry while she was following up with hundreds of families.    Biblical Foundation There are two key scriptures that Julie Lynn references in her ministry. The first one is Philippians 1:6, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus”. This is a verse that Julie Lynn clung to as she traveled the mysterious journey to where she is now. It is also a verse she shares with clients that she works with. It shows that God has something for them in the middle of the pain that they're going through.  The second scripture is in Isaiah 61:1, “...the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…”   What Grieving People Need 1. Someone to sit with them through the grieving process One thing that grieving people need is someone willing to sit in the dissonance with them. Grief is not something that will ever be fixed on this side of heaven. That chair will always be empty at Thanksgiving dinner. It's not going to be fixed. God only made one of the person that they lost. So grieving people are looking for someone to sit with them, and not try to rush them through the grieving process. 2. Someone to stay attuned to those very specific, important dates. It is good to keep the program from the funeral or the obituary. It gives several very important dates. This one document will give you the death date, the birth date, and if married the anniversary date. Sometimes a grieving person's own extended family doesn't connect the need with those specific dates. So people, being tuned to those dates for a grieving person is extremely powerful, as they're walking through these days, adjusting to life on earth without their loved one.   How the Local Church can Help: 1. Keep the funeral program and assign someone to follow up on those important dates.  This could be done by the pastor, staff, or small group that the person was involved with. Ways to follow up could be a text, a card, or a phone call. For those who are close, maybe even a visit. Some churches keep an Excel spreadsheet of these dates and share them each month with the appropriate people.  2. Consider having a Blue Christmas Service Several churches across the United States do this. There are some websites out there that can give you some good ideas on how to form a Blue Christmas service. It can be very powerful in the life of a grieving person around the holidays, to have their church acknowledge their loss. 3. Download this resource sheet  Julie Lynn has compiled a list of organizations that support grief in other ways. From infant to adult loss and groups that support teenagers as well as parents, there are many associations out there you can get involved with. Download this list and keep it in your “resource toolbox”    Are you being called to grief ministry? If you have been touched by this article and want to get more involved, consider volunteering at a local hospice organization. There are a lot of different ways to get involved. You don't have to begin by working directly with patients. There may be administrative tasks that you can help with or ask about other ways to get involved.  Another idea would be to check out other support systems in your community. There are organizations such as GriefShare and Compassionate Friends that churches can be a part of. There are several groups listed on the resource sheet. You can check out their websites to see if there are organized programs in your area or if you would like to start something.     Resources: Grief Support Resource List: Grief Support Resource List — Julie Lynn Ashley   Connect with Julie Lynn Ashley Email: ajulielynn@gmail.com Website: Julie Lynn Ashley Connect with Jacklin:  Effective Ministry Solutions Facebook Effective Ministry Solutions Instagram Preparing the Church for the Harvest Blog Schedule a Call     VISION PLANNING GUIDE  Are you wondering what's next for you? She also volunteers with Hospice of Santa Cruz County and trains others to work with those in grief. She has written a book called Heartbreak to Hope: Poems of Support for Grief and Loss.   Key Takeaways: Kara shares her grief story. We need to honor each loss differently. We live in a culture that encourages people to hide negative emotions and overvalues positive feelings. People don't like to see us grieving. Kara shares a short poem she wrote:  Love Take good care of your precious pain  Wrap your strong arms around it hold it against your warm chest Rock it gently, telling it softly that it is loved, it is needed, it is important, it makes perfect sense,  and love it, just as it is, in all of its agonizing beauty. Intensity creates posttraumatic growth. Grief never goes away, it just shifts shapes. Kara talks about her role as a counselor. Susan lost her father when she was a child, and grief was never addressed. Kara talks about how developmental trauma unfolds. You can ask a grieving person: What is it like for you right now? Kara talks about her inspiration to write her book of poems. Your Life What are you going to do with your house? Now that the foundation has crumbled Are you going to let it decay while time and weather carry it toward the grave? or are you going to rebuild more magnificently a palace that wouldn't have been possible without the footprint of the one that came before? There is nothing wrong about grieving, nothing to fix; it is another aspect of love.
