Se og hør episoden på Vinofil.no Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

The person of Orson Welles is a loaded one for an observer of film --- he was so many things in his lifetime, he wore so many hats. Welles had incredible triumphs and unbelievable lows in his chosen work. He was such a consummate actor that it was hard to tell when he was serious and when he was still acting, when seen outside a theater, radio studio or soundstage. If you ask him to be recalled by people in the 21st Century, many will be able to cite two aspects, at polar opposites of his life and story. Orson Welles wrote, directed, produced, and starred in what many regard as the greatest film ever made --- Citizen Kane. He was also, near the end of his life and in search of funds, a spokesperson for the lower- and medium-priced wines of Paul Masson, with the catchphrase, “We will sell no wine before its time.” In other words, these aren't grapes we just pressed, bottled and shipped. It's not garbage. That's what Masson was paying him for. He intoned this, the words emanating from his obese body but still in his beautiful, modulated baritone. He became a punch line. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Synopsis The German composer Johannes Brahms would probably have nodded in approval if he could have heard Orson Welles intone “We will sell no wine before its time” in those old TV ads for Paul Masson. Brahms was a notorious perfectionist, an obsessive polisher, and a cautious taste-tester of any of his own musical fermentations. So, if one notes that Brahms appeared at the piano on today's date in 1895, accompanying clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld at a high-profile Viennese performance of his Clarinet Sonata No. 1, one can safely assume there had been a number of trial performances beforehand. In the summer of 1894, during his annual holiday in the Austrian countryside, Brahms composed this sonata. The very first performances of the new Clarinet Sonata followed in the fall of 1894 for the Duke of Meiningen and his sister, with an additional test run in Frankfurt for Clara Schumann. After Clara gave the new work a thumbs up, Brahms apparently felt it was fit for public consumption: first on January 7, 1895 for members of Vienna's Tonkünstler Society, and four days later for an even more “toney” audience attending the Rosé String Quartet Quartet's chamber music series. After all, as Brahms and Mühlfeld might have put it: “We play NO sonata before its time!” Music Played in Today's Program Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) Clarinet Sonata No. 1 Richard Stoltzman, clarinet; Richarde Goode, piano RCA 60036

Nancy and Sarah tackle the curious case of Frank Langella, the celebrated actor fired from Netflix's Fall of the House of Usher after a young actress complains about an on-set interaction, while Fred Savage gets disappeared from The Wonder Years reboot for “abusive behavior,” though we're not sure what kind. On the Depp-Heard beat, Nancy and Sarah consider body language in the courtroom, “mutual abuse,” the problem with psychiatric diagnoses, and why women are the most complicated characters. Sexy selfies are discussed, but not enough (future episode!). Meanwhile, the fire over Roe v. Nova Perrill Nova Perrill, winemaker at Foppiano Vineyards, is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. He has been on this show before, the last time was this episode on April 24, 2019. The pronunciation FOH-ppi-a-no is Italian, FAH-ppi-a-no is American and you can take your pick. Foppiano winery is at the southern end of the city limits of Healdsburg. There have been grapes on that property for over 125 years. Southbound on the 101, take Old Redwood Hwy, and it's on your right next to the nursery. They have been there since 1896. They have specialized in Petit Syrah, which they have made since their founding. They were the first to put that name on a bottle in 1964. Family members drew the borders for the Russian River Valley AVA, Louis Foppiano was a leader in that process. This was a big decision, to draw the line between the warmer Dry Creek Valley and the Russian River Valley, which is cooler. During Prohibition, the homeowner was allowed to make 200 gallons each year untaxed. Dan Berger tells about how some people pooled their permits and made more than a single family limit. They also shipped fresh grapes and sacramental wine. They found a way to survive Prohibition. There is a famous photgraph of an IRS “Revenuer” in front of the winery, watching wine being dumped. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online. Historically, Petit Syrah was the most important variety growing there. Russian River Valley is cool, but not so cool at its northern end, where they are. These wines age well in the bottle. They have fruit all the way until you open them. Nova Perrill has been at Foppiano Vineyards for seven years. He says it takes 5 solid years to get to know the vineyard, the operation and the people. Previously, Nova was the assistant winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard, established in 1972 by David Stare. He made all the kinds of wine they produce, notably Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. He was there for seven years. Before that, he was at Mt. Eden wines in Santa Cruz, run by Martin Ray. He sold his name to another winery. He was instrumental in passing better wine labeling laws in the 1940s. He himself learned from Paul Masson, who was a Frenchman who had a winery and specialized in sparkling wines. Today there is a top notch music venue on the Paul Masson property. He is a Cal Poly SLO grad, with a bachelor's in ecology. He took the MS in Crop Science, there, and learned about viticulture, then he applied those concepts at Mt. Eden. He is happy with having taken a hands-on approach from the beginning. All they ever did to the wine was add yeast, the rest was 100% in the vines and climate. That allows the “terroir” to express itself. Nova has pioneered his vineyard controls and vineyard management techniques. This Sauvignon Blanc will develop itself in the bottle over the next couple of years. Later Dan says it may be even better after 5 years. They have about 150 acres around the winery. They produce 1000 cases or less of each of these varietals grown on their estate. There is real depth that comes with age in a well-made wine. “The winemaker has to build this into the wine. It doesn't just happen.” Nova Perrill says that their Sauvignon Blanc vines are old and are visible from the 101. Dan Berger gets a little hint of lemon oil or lime and also a bit of fresh fig. Dan would decant it, to let the waxy component come out. Dan says that it's screw capped, which is good for aging, but means it will need some air to let its flavors out, after it is opened. Foppiano Vineyards is open for wine tastings, although they are not what they used to be, after the pandemic. Calling ahead is optional. They are open for outdoor tasting. Now they taste a 2020 Chardonnay. Nova says, if you start with high-quality fruit, all you have to do is not screw it up. “You can only make the wine worse.” There is brightness and complexity in the same bottle here. At first you sense fruit.

California Wine Country
Nova Perrill, winemaker at Foppiano Vineyards

California Wine Country

Nova Perrill is our guest today on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. He is the winemaker at Foppiano Vineyards. (The owner and CEO of Foppiano Vineyards were on CWC last August, here is the podcast page of that episode.) Nova Perrill tells how he took a Crop Science degree at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo then he got hired at Mount Eden, where he learned winemaking and viticulture and where he was as likely to be on a tractor as making wine. It was in the Santa Clara Valley. Dan says that Santa Clara Valley had some vineyards back then but today it is mostly homes. Paul Masson played a critical role in California viticulture. For one thing, he hired Martin Ray. He was instrumental in label laws. We had adopted French names but they didn’t apply to us, as our appellations and micro-climates are different. He thought that they needed their own names. Dan Berger says the first wineries in Sonoma County were in the early 1970s. In the ‘90s when Nova got to Sonoma, they were still stuck on five varietals and since then a lot has happened. Nova Perrill's first vintage was 2004. He was part of a class of winemakers that were in the middle of the second Renaissance, as Dan described it. In the 80s and 90s, winemaking skills were rare and winemakers would find work as consultants in a lot of places. Nova describes the location of the vineyard, in Sonoma County. They are the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in Sonoma County. He has the option of finding fruit that favors each of the two main flavor profiles of SV, grassy or tropical flavors. Foppiano Vineyards was founded in 1896 by Giovanni Foppiano. It’s one of Sonoma County’s longest continuously operating vineyards. Every winery is assigned a bonded winery number. They are bonded winery 312, the 312th one opened in California. Next they taste a 2017 Chardonnay. It’s from the Russian River, right off the estate. He describes the location. They are planting Barbera there. This is the last vintage of Chardonnay from there. Dan finds lime flavors and traces of new oak in it. They only made 49 cases of it and it is available at the tasting room. Nova learned not to be afraid of barrel fermentation and ML, and not to overdo it; “balance is everything.” They taste a Cabernet that Dan says this is more like the ones of the 1960s. It is a 1981 so will have some brown color, and more after an hour. They have a new mural out in front, to commemorate the original storefront that they had there. There is an avocado tree that is famous throughout Sonoma County. It produces thousands of avocados. There is a 100-year-old barn and much more. They are open seven days a week and Nova describes it as a diamond in the rough. They don’t to a lot of advertising. Dan notes that sparkling red wine is really hard to make.
