Rich Gotham, the president of the Boston Celtics, joins CJ to discuss the business side of one of the world's best basketball teams and most recognizable sports brands. He explains the evolution of the Celtics' business model over the last decade, how the team diversifies its revenue streams to mitigate its dependence on in-game income, how they grow the team's revenue given the finite number of seats at each game, and the role that digital technology and sponsorships play in this. He talks about how the team's performance affects the revenue they generate and he sheds light on how the use of ticket sale data, dynamic pricing, and building a membership model contribute to the team's financial success. He also clears up, once and for all, what really happened with Paul Pearson in the 2008 NBA finals! If you're looking for an ERP head to NetSuite: https://netsuite.com/metrics and get a customized KPI checklist.—SPONSORS:NetSuite provides financial software for all your business needs. Many professions such as doctors, engineers, and architects are regulated to ensure that people providing services to the public are properly trained and competent to practice. The need for this is clear: you want to ensure people receive good medical care and the buildings and bridges don't fall down. The regulation of lawyers has this objective as well: you want to know that you're getting competent legal advice when you hire a lawyer. Because lawyers are often engaged in work that is in opposition to the wishes of the government it is also important that the regulation of lawyers is independent of the government. If you hire a lawyer to defend a criminal case, prevent the government from apprehending your children, challenging the validity of a law, or pursue indigenous rights, you do not want the lawyer to be concerned about the professional consequences of acting in opposition to the government's wishes. This independence is under threat in British Columbia as a result of a proposal to "modernize" the Legal Profession Act in such a way that the provincial government would be able to appoint an increased number of the benchers (directors) that govern the Law Society. As discussed on the show, the government's immediate motivations to take greater control include a wish to avoid providing adequate funding for legal aid services by creating a system of paralegals with less training than lawyers to provide legal services for the poor. The issue of adequate legal aid funding has been pursued by the Law Society for many years. BC is the only province in Canada that imposes a special tax on legal services. The tax was introduced by an NDP government in 1992.When the tax was introduced it was done for the express purpose of funding legal aid. Quickly, however, the tax started collecting more money than the government was providing for legal aid and the extra funds were diverted to general revenue. The government now diverts more than half of the funds collected pursuant to the special tax while dramatically underfunding legal aid services. The diversion of tax revenue from legal aid has resulted in various challenges by the Law Society including a vote to censure a past Attorney General. A history of the funding of legal aid in BC, the special tax, and the disproportionate impact the diversion of revenue from the special tax has had on women can be found here. The government proposal has met with opposition from the Canadian Bar Association, the Victoria Bar Association, the Law Society, and others. As discussed on the show, one of the elected benchers from Victoria, Paul Pearson gave up his position because he works as Crown Counsel and concluded he couldn't effectively oppose the government initiative while also working for the provincial government. His statement outlining the import of what has been proposed can be found here.Follow this link for a transcript of the show and links to the legislation discussed.

In this episode of "I Thought You'd Like to Know This, Too," Dr. Kristina Olsen interviews Fr. Paul Pearson concerning his Dante Trilogy (September 5, 2022)Spiritual Direction from Dante: Avoiding the Inferno (Volume 1)https://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Direction-Dante-Avoiding-Inferno/dp/150511232X/Hell and how to avoid it are perennial topics of interest for believing Christians and others. With good reason. Entire libraries have been written on the subject. Most people, even those familiar with his classic, do not realize that Dante Aligheri's Divine Comedy, chock-full as it is of history and politics, is a masterpiece of spiritual writing. The most famous of his three volumes is the Inferno, an account of Dante's journey through the underworld, where he sees the horror of sin firsthand. Join Dante and—guided by Oratorian Father Paul Pearson—with him . . .learn that the sufferings of the souls in hell are the natural consequences of the spiritual disorder of their sinful actions.develop a profound hatred for sin, not merely because it offends God, but because it will destroy your soul and thwart your happiness, both on earth and for eternity.observe the horrible punishments of the damned and be shocked into a state of enlightened self-interest.armed with the knowledge of what sin does to us, resolve to fight against it with all your strength. realize that this literary journey through hell is intended to lead you to heaven. A reading experience like no other, Spiritual Direction from Dante, will educate and entertain you, but most importantly, will help you avoid the inferno!Spiritual Direction From Dante: Ascending Mount Purgatory (Volume 2)https://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Direction-Dante-Ascending-Purgatory/dp/1505117534/Join Father Paul Pearson of the Oratory as he guides you on a spiritual journey through one of the great classics of Christian literature, Dante's Purgatorio. Purgatory is the least understood of the three possible “destinations” when we die (though unlike heaven or hell it is not an eternal one) and is mysterious to many Christians and even to many Catholics today. As he did in his first volume in the Spiritual Direction from Dante trilogy, Avoiding the Inferno, Father Pearson adroitly draws out the great spiritual insights hidden in The Divine Comedy. Learn how and why:Dante's presentation of Purgatory is something beautifully hopeful.Freedom is the dominant theme here and the rejoicing of captives delivered from their prisons the dominant tone. Purgatory is filled with good people, people well on their way to becoming saints. They are increasingly concerned for one another and generous, the more so the higher on the mountain they climb. They are interested in one another's well-being and rejoice in one another's victories as though they were their own.The sufferings on Mount Purgatory are not something that happens to the souls there; they happen for them. This has all been designed for their benefit, and they are grateful to God for making it possible. Purgatory is God's merciful plan for allowing us to rediscover the joy and freedom of being human, the joy for which we were created but which sin has smothered and distorted. This is what we can be. This is what we can begin to be, even now, if only we will separate ourselves from sin. What are we waiting for? Join Father Pearson in Ascending Mount Purgatory.Spiritual Direction from Dante: Yearning for Paradise (Volume 3)https://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Direction-Dante-Yearning-Paradise/dp/150512381X/In Spiritual Direction from Dante: Yearning for Paradise, the Oratorian Father Paul Pearson provides a detailed but accessible spiritual commentary on the last volume of Dante's masterpiece, Divine Comedy. Fr. Pearson takes readers step-by-step through the text, explaining the spiritual lessons Dante intends his readers to learn. These lessons are particularly important, both in Dante's day and in our own, due to the watered-down image of heavenly bliss the world offers us. Dante's Paradiso corrects this misunderstanding, showing the faithful a paradise that is more real and more fulfilling than anything we have experienced here on earth or even dreamt of. Father Pearson's text is an indispensable companion to the poem for both the scholar and the neophyte. It brings Dante's poem and its lessons into our modern context so that readers will discover:our true individuality is not obliterated in heaven, but is allowed to continue, and is fostered and highlighted. even as we struggle now, we are never alone – everyone in heaven is interested and involved in our salvation.the human unity we strive for here (often unsuccessfully) is a shining fact there, with each person rejoicing in every other person's joys and working together for the salvation of those still striving for heaven. There we are finally understood fully and appreciated. all our human desires are fulfilled in heaven, not abandoned. Fr. Pearson, having already guided readers through the realms of hell and purgatory in this 3-part series, now brings before our eyes the saints and angels, the Virgin Mary, and the Blessed Trinity! But Spiritual Direction from Dante: Yearning for Heaven is more than a guide to the last book of Dante's Divine Comedy. It is an introduction and an invitation to eternal happiness, an invitation that is just as compelling as it was 700 years ago when Dante wrote it.
Many people search for heavenly bliss on earth, allured by all the world has to offer. Over the years many of Thomas Merton's visitors and friends commented on his sense of humour. With the seriousness of his writings this humour can all too easily be overlooked. This presentation will explore Merton's sense of humour from his pre-monastic cartoons, through his correspondence, journal entries and recordings, to the stories told by his friends and brothers. Merton's sense of humor was a way for him to critique the world, humorously warning readers of our propensity to “wear our mitres even to bed” and reminding them of his own need for beer! Paul M. Pearson is Director of the Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky and Chief of Research for the Merton Legacy Trust. He is Resident Secretary of the International Thomas Merton Society and served as President for the 10th administration. Paul is a founding member of the Thomas Merton Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He edited Seeking Paradise: Thomas Merton and the Shakers, A Meeting of Angels: The Correspondence of Thomas Merton with Edward Deming and Faith Andrews, Thomas Merton on Christian Contemplation and, most recently, Beholding Paradise: The Photographs of Thomas Merton.

It’s been just over five weeks since a Kenosha police officer shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times. The group “Justice For Jacob” is calling for the immediate firing and indictment of the officer, in addition to other measures the group says would end police violence and systemic racism. To drive home the message, organizers are holding a 24-hour rally scheduled to end Monday at noon in downtown Kenosha. The gathering attracted both people from the Kenosha community and out of state. One voice after another amplified by a mic system under the canopy of a yellow and white striped tent rang out across Civic Center Park. People sat on benches and metal chairs scattered 6 feet plus apart. Some recorded speeches on phones, others simply listened. Volunteers stood at makeshift stations quietly urging people to register to vote. A few tents stood scattered throughout the park — a quiet statement that some people would spend the night as the 24-hour rally continued. Paul Pearson was among

In EPISODE SEVENTEEN we start here in Salzburg with the statue of St. Vergil, an 8th century Irish monk who believed the world was round and then travel out to terra incognita in a leather boat with another Irish saint, Brendan the Navigator. It is the Voyage of St. Brendan, a popular medieval religious narrative, that we focus on and explore how different readings of this text produce different geographical imaginations. Contributors include Dr. Paul Pearson, Dr. Clara Strijbosch and Dr. Jon Mackley.
Med: Martin Jakobsson, maringeolog Stockholms Universitet, Larry Mayer, havsforskare University of New Hampshire, Peter Schlosser, geofysiker Columbia University, Paul Pearson, maringeolog Cardiff University, Stephanie Dutkiewicz, biogeokemist MIT Boston, och frilansreporter Tomas Lindblad. vet@sverigesradio.se

Foraminifera – tiny, single-celled marine life forms – build gorgeous houses that record how much ice there is on the planet. This video was supported by the Heising-Simons Foundation. To learn more, visit https://www.heisingsimons.org/ Special thanks to Professor Lee Kump of Penn State University and Professor Howie Spero of UC-Davis for lending their advice, expertise, and patience to the making of this video! Thanks also to our supporters on https://www.patreon.com/MinuteEarth Help translate this video: http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_video?ref=share&v=oaOfeSJZ3lY ___________________________________________ FYI: We try to leave jargon out of our videos, but if you want to learn more about this topic, here are some keywords to get your googling started: foraminifera: a class of single-celled marine organisms – protists, not animals – that live either near the surface ("planktonic foraminifera") or on the seafloor ("benthic foraminifera"). Called forams for short. climate proxy: something that tells us what the climate was like in the past, such as data from the thickness of tree rings, the composition of gases trapped in ancient ice, historical human records of annual bloom times (eg the long-recorded bloom dates of cherry trees in Kyoto, Japan), or the ratios of certain stable isotopes found in shells, corals, or other biogenic substances oxygen-18: a stable isotope of oxygen that contains 8 protons and 10 neutrons, rather than the 8 protons and 8 neutrons of "regular" oxygen (oxygen-16). The ratio of oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 in seawater (and sea shells) can be used as a proxy for the global average temperature ice sheet: a permanent layer of ice covering land, as found in polar regions (and as distinguished from sea ice, like the stuff that floats at the north pole in the Arctic ocean). Combined, the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets contain more than 99% of the total freshwater ice on Earth. ___________________________________________ If you liked this week’s video, we think you might also like: The Tiniest Fossils by the AMNH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLSa8cGJixQ Orbulina feeding on Artemia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYQNt52tiVU Mysterious Web Masters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0WbN34Mh7k ___________________________________________ Credits (and Twitter handles): Script Writer: Emily Elert (@eelert) Script Editor: Kate Yoshida (@KateYoshida) Video Illustrator: Ever Salazar (@eversalazar) Video Director: Emily Elert (@eelert) Video Narrator: Emily Elert (@eelert) With Contributions From: Henry Reich, Alex Reich, Peter Reich, David Goldenberg Music by: Nathaniel Schroeder: http://www.soundcloud.com/drschroeder Image credits: Cribrohantkenina inflata - Paul Pearson https://museum.wales/articles/2007-08-03/Up-close-with-nature/ Elphidium macellum, Bulimina and Calcarina hispida by foraminifera.eu http://www.foraminifera.eu/ Globigerina - Hannes Grobe http://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/our-work/biodiversity/planktonic-forminera.html _________________________________________ Like our videos?
