Patrick McKenzie is joined by Clara Collier, editor and publisher of Asterisk Magazine, to discuss how we create institutions that bend towards truth. Clara explains why she launched a quarterly print magazine in the Internet age. She traces how 19th century German universities invented the modern infrastructure for rewarding knowledge production and training researchers at scale, and where our public science communication falls short of that heritage. The conversation examines why institutional trust has declined, particularly around science communication and public health, and whether we can rebuild trust in knowledge-producing institutions.–Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/building-institutions-that-bend-towards-truth-with-clara-collier-of-asterisk-magazine/–Sponsor: MercuryThis episode is brought to you by Mercury, the fintech trusted by 200K+ companies — from first milestones to running complex systems. Your perfectionism isn't protecting your reputation… It's protecting your ego. And it's costing you real money, real impact, and real progress toward the life you want to build. After building my business over the last decade, I've learned this hard truth: perfectionism is selfish. Every minute you spend polishing something that could already be helping someone is a minute you're withholding value from your audience. Every hour spent perfecting is an hour not spent learning from real market feedback. Every delayed launch is revenue walking straight out the door. If you have a Google Doc full of business ideas, a camera roll packed with content you'll "post later," and a heart full of dreams you're not quite ready to share, this one's for you. Patrick McKenzie is joined by Chris Best, CEO of Substack, to discuss how the platform created new economic infrastructure for independent media. They explore Substack's evolution from a simple newsletter tool to a full media network, the revenue guarantee program that attracted prominent writers, and the company's principled stance on press freedom during the "cancel culture" years. If you're feeling the pressure to squeeze every last drop out of the year even though you're already running on fumes, this episode is for you. I'm going to show you how to finish the year aligned, not burned out, and why your best move right now might be to slow down on purpose! This episode is not about making you do more. It's about guiding you to choose better and to start thinking of this season as a bridge, not a cliff. Together, we'll identify what's actually working in your business right now, the quiet wins you're probably overlooking, and we'll release the stuff that's stealing your energy without giving much back. Then, I'll show you exactly how I shift my routines and habits now, before January, so I'm not showing up to the new year with a blank page and burnout baggage. Finally, we'll talk about why saying no to 10 good ideas in favor of one bold aligned move might be the most strategic thing you do all year. This is about getting realigned with what you actually want from your life and your work. It's about redefining what "finishing strong" means, and it might not look anything like what Instagram is telling you it should. So if you're ready to finish the year on purpose with clarity, with boundaries, and with momentum that actually lasts, click play! Patrick McKenzie is joined again by Kelsey Piper, who has co-founded "The Argument" to revive principled liberal discourse after witnessing how coordinated social media campaigns replaced substantive disagreement in newsrooms. Their conversation traces this institutional breakdown from media to government, examining how DOGE's spreadsheet-driven governance nearly destroyed PEPFAR, America's most successful foreign aid program that had driven infant coffin manufacturers out of business across Africa. The discussion ultimately argues that rebuilding both effective journalism and competent governance requires returning to the hard work of engaging with ground-level reality rather than managing online narratives.–Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/prestige-media-new-media-with-kelsey-piper/–Sponsor: This episode is brought to you by Mercury, the fintech trusted by 200K+ companies — from first milestones to running complex systems. When I think about those first few years as an entrepreneur, I see a woman who was so full of fire and determination, but honestly had no idea what she was walking into. And I love her for that! Now, after years of growth, evolution, and yes, plenty of beautiful failures, I can see the patterns so clearly. The places where a little more strategy could've saved her months of spinning her wheels, where better boundaries could've prevented that inevitable crash, where more courage to be seen could've accelerated everything. This episode originally aired a while back, but I'm bringing it back because these lessons feel so relevant right now. Because here's what I've learned: we don't get to skip steps. Every fumble, every pivot, every moment of not having a clue was preparing us for what's next. And if sharing these lessons can help you honor your own journey while maybe sidestepping a few of the more painful detours? That feels like the most beautiful full-circle moment. So whether you're in your own 'figuring it out' era or you're revisiting this with fresh eyes, let's dive in with so much love for the versions of ourselves who were brave enough to begin! Patrick McKenzie (patio11) is joined by Bean, a pseudonymous defense industry expert, to explore the intellectual crossovers between military and civilian domains. The conversation reveals how the defense industry's fundamental constraint of having only one customer (a monopsony) creates entirely different incentives than tech, leading to conservatism and 30-50 year product lifecycles. Bean argues that drones are largely modern iterations of cruise missiles we've had since the 1950s, and explains why current anti-drone defenses make swarm attacks less threatening than headlines suggest.–Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/defense-with-bean-of-naval-gazing/–Sponsor:This episode is brought to you by Mercury, the fintech trusted by 200K+ companies — from first milestones to running complex systems. This week on Complex Systems, Patrick McKenzie (patio11) is joined by Joel Becker from METR. They discuss groundbreaking research on AI coding assistants.Joel et al's randomized controlled trial of 16 expert developers working on major open source projects revealed a counterintuitive finding: despite predictions of 24-40% speed improvements, developers actually took 19% longer to complete tasks when using AI tools, even though they retrospectively believed they were 20% faster. The conversation explores why even sophisticated professionals struggle to accurately assess their own productivity with AI tools, the industrial organization of software development, and the implications for AI's recursive self-improvement in research and development. It also touches on other perspectives from software developers using these tools professionally, and where we can expect them to improve rapidly.–Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/the-great-developer-speed-up-with-joel-becker/–Sponsor: This episode is brought to you by Mercury, the fintech trusted by 200K+ companies — from first milestones to running complex systems. When I shared a carousel on Instagram titled “10 ‘Normal' Things I Didn't Know Were ADHD,” I had no idea it would resonate so deeply. Thousands of women flooded the comments with messages like, “I've never felt so seen,” and “Are you living in my brain?” and honestly, I felt the same way. That post didn't come from research or theory; it was my lived experience. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on the surprising moment I discovered I have ADHD at 35 and how it's impacted every aspect of my life: from how I run my business to how I navigate motherhood. I share the signs I missed, the strengths ADHD gave me, the hidden challenges it created, and what I've experimented with to support my brain, like meds, movement, and microdosing. This is part personal story, part practical insight, and part love letter to every woman who's ever wondered why life sometimes feels harder than it “should.” If you've ever thought you were just “bad at life,” this episode is for you. You know those moments in business where things suddenly feel a little too quiet? Maybe the inquiries slow down, sales dip, or your calendar just isn't as packed as usual. It can feel unsettling, especially when you're not sure why it's happening or how long it's going to last. The truth is, EVERY entrepreneur hits those slower seasons. In my business, summer tends to be our slow season. Depending on what you do, it may be around the holidays, or in the Fall. Having busy and slow seasons is a natural part of running a business. The most important thing is for us to make the most out of these ebbs and flows to prepare for when things pick back up again. That's why today I'm bringing back a conversation that originally aired a few years ago about four strategies I lean on when things slow down in my own business. They're timeless, practical, and focused on helping you use these quieter times to your advantage! So whether you're currently feeling the weight of a slower season or just want to be prepared for the next one, this episode is packed with four simple yet effective ways to reignite momentum and boost your sales. This summer, I am not focused on launching something new. I am focused on building something essential: playbooks. Clear, step-by-step documentation that makes our business run smoother, with or without me. Dan Martell's book Buy Back Your Time reminded me that real freedom comes from documented systems, not just delegation. And my friend Stacy Tuschl challenged us to not just build playbooks, but to test them. That hit hard! The truth is, I learned this lesson the hard way. One of my team members broke her foot during a major launch and suddenly we realized she was the only one who knew how to do a few key crucial elements of her job. From that moment on, I knew that if we wanted peace, to grow with ease, and to actually protect our people, we had to build the playbooks for each role. So, come along this journey with me while I explain what a playbook is, how we're building them out, and how we're testing them! Feeling anxious about the economy or unsure how to take control of your financial life? You're not alone, and this episode is your toolkit. Haley Sacks, AKA Mrs. Dow Jones, is a self-made financial powerhouse who turned confusion into clarity and turned budgeting into a cultural movement. When she realized financial education felt like it was made by and for Wall Street bros, she set out to change that… and succeeded. Her latest creation, The Money Book 2.0, is a revolutionary, spreadsheet-based financial system that's already changed over 10,000 lives and counting. It's intuitive, secure, fun, and actually works! No clunky apps, no confusing spreadsheets, just results. In this conversation, we're digging into how to budget with confidence, why your spreadsheet might be sexier than your stock portfolio, and how to stop feeling behind when it comes to money… no matter what the headlines say. Have you ever heard a story so raw, so real, that it physically stopped you in your tracks? The kind of story that makes you put down your to-do list, take a deep breath, and remember why you started this journey in the first place? May is National Small Business Month, and while I LOVE hearing from the headline-makers and household names, today is about something even more special: real stories from real listeners of this podcast. These are the kind of women who tune in while they're juggling kids and client calls, who build their dreams during nap time or after their 9-to-5. They may not have gone viral, but what they've built? It's powerful. It's personal. And it matters. Tonbra, Maris, and Chelle didn't just build businesses… They built something beautiful from heartbreak, identity shifts, and unimaginable challenges. From cancer diagnoses to grief to reinvention, these women turned their hardest chapters into platforms that now help others. If you're walking through your own hard chapter, or even just need a reminder of what's possible on the other side of pain, this one's for you. And hey, if you want to be part of this kind of community I'd love to invite you into the Goal Digger Podcast Insiders Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/goaldiggerpodcast/ Goal Digger Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/goaldiggerpodcast/ Goal Digger Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goaldiggerpodcast/ Goal Digger Show Notes: https://www.jennakutcherblog.com/national-small-business-month-stories Thanks to our Goal Digger Sponsors: Get $25 off your first purchase at http://therealreal.com/goaldigger. In a world that celebrates big milestones, loud announcements, and curated perfection, it's easy to forget that some of the most meaningful wins don't make it to the feed. They happen behind closed doors. They don't come with applause. They aren't always photogenic… but they are real. And they are enough. Today's episode is a deeply personal one. I'm pulling back the curtain on how my definition of success has changed over the years… How I'm still digging my biggest goals, but now it's in a way that aligns more with how I want to feel, not just how it all looks. Whether you're in a season of quiet growth, private healing, or just choosing to build a life that prioritizes peace over performance, I hope this episode feels like a soft place to land. Let's redefine what it means to win… even when no one else is watching. Ready? Click play! For most of us, creating content is the part that feels natural, but promotion feels more vulnerable. So we do what we've always done… we make something new. We stay busy. We stay in motion. But what if the real power isn't in making more, but in letting what you've already made breathe a little longer? What if the magic isn't in more content, but in more intention behind how it's shared? Visit http://www.teachmetopin.com to learn about the platform I've been teaching about for over eight years, one I've helped over 25,000 people use in their business to create content systems that actually last! In this episode, I'm walking you through a simple mindset shift that changed everything for me. If you're feeling burned out, tired of feeding the algorithm, or wondering why your content doesn't seem to carry the weight it should, this one's for you. We'll explore what it looks like to shift from short-term content bursts to long-term, strategic sharing. I'm talking about ways to make your creations live longer, reach further, and work harder without requiring more from you every single day. If you're ready to get off the content hamster wheel and start building a business where your work keeps working, even while you rest, this is your permission slip. Press play now!
