Join NBN host Hollay Ghadery for a thought-provoking conversation with Linda Trihn about her memoir, Seeking Spirit: A Vietnamese (Non)Buddhist Memoir (Miroland, 2025). Linda Trinh had everything she thought an immigrant woman should want: motherhood, career, and security. Yet, she felt empty. Growing up in Winnipeg, Linda helped her mom make offerings to their ancestors and cleaned her late dad's altar. These were her mother's beliefs, but was Buddhism Linda's belief? In her late-twenties, Linda sought answers in Egypt and China and prayed during corporate downsizing, seeking meaning in contemporary life. Via a collection of essays, she plays with form and structure to show the interconnection of life events, trauma, and spiritual practice, to move from being a passive believer to an active seeker. About Linda Trinh: Linda Trinh is a Vietnamese Canadian author who writes nonfiction and fiction for adults and children. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in literary magazines such as The Fiddlehead, Room, Prairie Fire, and This Magazine. Her short fiction has appeared in anthologies such as Black Cat anthology and Alternate Plains: Stories of Prairie Speculative Fiction. She has been nominated for two National Magazine Awards. Her award-winning early chapter book series, The Nguyen Kids, explores Vietnamese culture and identity with elements of the supernatural, spirituality, and social justice woven in. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. I've admired Mikka Jacobsen's craft ever since I read her essay collection, MODERN FABLES, a couple of years ago, and was thrilled to see that everything I love about her voice returns in her latest book, the short story collection GOOD VICTORY, stories mostly set in Alberta, in which the mundane mingles with the extraordinary to incredible results. It was also such a pleasure to meet her online and get to talk about her fiction debut, and whether or not she believes in such things as ghosts, psychics, or life coaches. In our BOOKSPO conversation, she tells me how Samantha Hunt's novel THE SEAS gave her permission to get unabashedly weird in her fiction, and also to treat her characters' yearnings for love with the seriousness with which such yearnings deserve. She talks about how her feminism shows up in her writing, both the stories and essays; the ways in which writing fiction is harder than memoir, and how releasing a second book feels different (and maybe better?) than releasing a first. Debut stories about the absurdity of growing up and being human in the twenty-first century.A woman finds her childhood friend working in a booth at a psychic fair in the West Edmonton Mall courtyard. A lonely neuropsychology student steals cocaine from his lab rat to impress a Tinder date. Teenage girls play a dangerous game and discover a portal to another reality. These penetrating stories explore the strangeness and absurdity of being human in the twenty-first century: high school dances and teen pregnancy, bearded ladies and neighbourhood flashers, life coaches and Dolly Parton karaoke. Both unsettling and illuminating, Good Victory shines light in dark places.Mikka Jacobsen is the author of the essay collection Modern Fables (Freehand Books, 2022). Her work has appeared in Joyland, The Fiddlehead, The Puritan, Prairie Fire, Canadian Notes & Queries, The Missouri Review, and Lit Hub, among others. She won Alberta Views‘ 2022 Short Story Contest. She lives in Calgary, AB. Good Victory is her first collection of stories.Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. Thanks for sticking around!I loved talking to Su Chang about her debut novel, THE IMMORTAL WOMAN, which came out in March from House of Anansi Press and has been much buzzed-about in literary circles. And for good reason—this debut novel includes 70 years of contemporary Chinese history, and crosses both continents and generations to tell an epic mother/daughter tale that grapples with the traumatic legacy of China's Cultural Revolution. It's a powerful, moving and incredibly dynamic novel that complicated my understanding of China and its history in surprising and essential ways. In our conversation, Chang talks about the ambitiousness of one's debut novel being an epic, but also why she couldn't have told a story of the Cultural Revolution any other way. She talks about how she understood the Cultural Revolution as a child growing up in China overhearing discussions at the dinner table, but about how it wasn't until she'd left China and began reading uncensored histories of her country that she began to understand just why those dinner table discussions had been so different from what she'd been taught in school. She describes the kind of broad reading that's required to get close to something resembling truth, and also the ways in which she identified with the protagonist of Ayad Akhtar's HOMELAND ELEGIES and the paradoxical way in which he understands Americanness. A sweeping generational story of heartbreak, resilience, and yearning, revealing an insider's view of the fractured lives of Chinese immigrants and those they leave behind.Lemei, once a student Red Guard leader in 1960s Shanghai and a journalist at a state newspaper, was involved in a brutal act of violence during the Tiananmen Square protests and lost all hope for her country. Her daughter, Lin, is a student at an American university on a mission to become a true Westerner. She tirelessly erases her birth identity, abandons her Chinese suitor, and pursues a white lover, all the while haunted by the scars of her upbringing. Following China's meteoric rise, Lemei is slowly dragged into a nationalistic perspective that stuns Lin. Their final confrontation results in tragic consequences, but ultimately, offers hope for a better future. By turns wry and lyrical, The Immortal Woman reminds us to hold tight to our humanity at any cost.SU CHANG is a Chinese-Canadian writer. Born and raised in Shanghai, she is the daughter of a former (reluctant) Red Guard leader. Her fiction has been recognized in Prairie Fire's Short Fiction Contest, Canadian Authors' Association (Toronto) National Writing Contest, ILS/Fence Fiction Contest, the Masters Review's Novel Excerpt Contest, among others.Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. In this episode of Iron Sights Podcast, I sit down with Mike Mihalski & Kyle Grothues, two high school buddies who turned their passion into one of the top AR-15 rifle and parts manufacturers in the industry. These guys aren't just business owners; they're hands-on, in-the-trenches gun nerds who put in the work, both in their factory and face-to-face with their customers. We dive into their journey, the challenges they've faced, and what makes their approach unique in an industry filled with big names and custom builders. This conversation was even more special because it took place at Shot Show 2025, inside Staccato Vegas (formerly Prairie Fire). If you're into firearms, you've probably seen Mike and Kyle on Instagram, other podcasts, or at industry events. They bring energy, knowledge, and an unfiltered perspective on what it takes to stand out in this competitive space.Timestamps:00:00 Intro05:30 Sons of Liberty Origins08:47 Challenges & Growth14:22 Innovations & Future22:20 Law Enforcement Expansion33:26 Innovation & Intuition35:02 Future-Proofing Firearms38:06 Decline of Customer Service41:03 Importance of Customer Retention56:25 Scaling While Maintaining Quality01:02:29 Consistency in Manufacturing01:05:05 Building Company Culture01:10:03 Hiring the Right People01:15:36 Industry Challenges & Innovation01:23:39 Social Media's Impact01:31:32 Future Plans for SHOT Show 2025Red Dot Fitness Training Programs:rdfprograms.comOnline Membership (Full Access To All Programs & Virtual Coaching):https://www.reddotfitness.net/online-membershipVirtual Coaching:https://www.reddotfitness.net/virtual-coachingSelf-Guided Programs:https://www.reddotfitness.net/Self-Guided-Programs1Connect With Us:Website - https://ironsightspodcast.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ironsightspodcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/

Hello and welcome to Club Prairie Fire, Season 9 episode 7. We are BFF's of tequila, tabasco and the Duckworth Lewis Stern System. This episode we are calling, “Good to be winners” That's right folks, on this humble little podcast populated by 2 Englishmen, Vaughany and Ollie, and 2 Aussies, Gilly and The Professor, we support two teams, the Green and Gold Goliaths that are Australia and the Three Roaring Lions of Mighty England and this week, for both sides, they did it in a canter. Thats right, we've got all the news and views from a ten Wicket Victory for the Aussies and a 323 Run Drubbing for the Poms. We dive head first into the Adelaide test where it was absolute madness, wickets were falling first ball, bowlers were sending batsmen who scored run a ball centuries and beer snakes were stealing the show. Also, we take a good look over at the Basin Reserve where a pair of Yorkshiremen went at over 5 runs an over to ensure the english lads could hit the links on both days 4 and 5. As always, nothing too serious and plenty of cricket banter, this is Club Prairie Fire. This week, Fika with Vicky welcomes Author Janet Trull. We'll be looking into her books End of the Line and Something's Burning. Quote from Janet: “The backroads are unpaved, unplowed and unpopular. All the best stories start here.” When I came into contact with End of the Line, I had to agree. It had found my sweet spot. Ordinary people living their lives become extraordinary stories of resilience when a pen is placed in the correct hands. Janet Trull has those hands. About End of the Line: Haliburton, Ontario, 1878. The new Victoria Rail Line delivers hundreds of immigrants to the last station in the Northern Townships. Some are wealthy, ready to take advantage of new opportunities. Most are poor and illiterate. The farmland is free. All you must do is build a cabin and raise crops out of Precambrian rock. The fortunate ones find their way up the ridge to the Nunnery where women practice traditions from mixed ancestries. They are skilled in midwifery and hunting. Are you hungry? Lonely?
