NZSki has lodged an application with the Environmental Protection Agency to upgrade Queenstown ski field The Remarkables and expand into neighbouring Doolans Basin which would increase the size of the ski area from 449 hectares to 711 hectares. The expansion would almost double the daily visitor capacity for from 3500 to 6000. NZSki CEO Paul Anderson told Andrew Dickens some of the growth is coming from Queestown's population growth, "we think about half of the growth of the remarkable ski area is going to come from our local community alone." Last week we took the Lento box to capture the natural soundscapes of rural Leicestershire and Rutland. Our visit coincided with the warmest May temperatures on record and as it turned out the most powerful thunderstorms we'd ever experienced. On the evening of 26 May huge storm clouds swept into the valley, centering exactly over a remote wooded area where we'd left the Lento box tied to a tree to capture the natural soundscape. An hour later the storm was still directly overhead with ear-splitting thunderclaps and fork lightning. We crossed our fingers that the mics would be alright. We collected the box the next morning. The mics survived but the box was drenched. In this episode we're sharing the hour leading up to those lightning strikes. Listening is a rare opportunity to experience the sound-feel of being within an empty rural woodland as the trees and wildlife prepare to ride out the on-coming tumult. Gain full aural immersion of this woodland soundscape with headphones or ear pods. The clarity and spatial reverberances of the spring birdsong. The 360 degree humming created by millions of tiny bees and other insects engaged in their daily foraging. Hear how a small deer picks its way over the leaf litter and pauses right beneath the tree holding the mics. Was it curious about the Lento box? Its footfalls seem to suggest it was. Pheasants can also be heard wandering the forest floor nearby, and mewing to each other in ways we haven't heard before. Baa'ings of sheep and lambs from the surrounding fields echo in the spaces between the trees. As this passage of time progresses towards the 50 minute mark the sky above the woodland has gone from a bright spring blue to the densest of heavy clouded grey. The landscape has dimmed into a premature dusk, punctuated only by intense electrical flashes. It can feel so dangerous to us even from within sturdy buildings, and yet thunderstorms and the way the wildlife respond to them with only leaves and branches for protection are all just part and parcel of life on Earth. * In the last few minutes of this 62 minute passage of time some owls can be heard hooting shortly after the first major roll of thunder cracks open the rapidly darkening sky. ** This is Launde Park Wood Nature Reserve, an ancient woodland of 57 Hectares, managed by Leicester and Rutland Wildlife Trust. *** Next time we'll share the next hour, but be prepared, it's one of the most tumultuous hours we've ever recorded!

Syntropy isn't about the tropics—it's about the physics of life. In this episode, Samuele sits down with Sven Verwiel, CEO & Co‑Founder of Forest Foods (Kenya), to unpack syntropic agroforestry: a regenerative farming approach designed to compound productivity over time through stratification (vertical layers) and succession (time). We go from field reality to unit economics: what it takes to regenerate degraded soils, why syntropic systems can reach ~200–230% land‑use efficiency, and how Forest Foods is proving a commercial model with outdoor production, zero chemicals, and strong market demand for premium quality. We also discuss livestock integration (pasture‑raised chickens), the hardest founder challenges (land access, capital, logistics, cold chain), and why regenerative agriculture must become a career path that attracts the next generation. Key topics: syntropy vs entropy, soil regeneration, agroforestry design, profitability, go‑to‑market, scaling regenerative food systems in Africa

Māori landowners at the top of the South Island will have more than 3-thousand hectares returned to them in a landmark agreement signed with the Crown. The customary landowners were promised one tenth of the 61,000 hectares sold in a deal with the New Zealand Company in the 1830s, but instead got less than 1200. In 2017, the Supreme Court ruled that the government must honour the deal, but subsequent efforts to resolve the case outside court were unsuccessful. Samantha Gee has more.
The government is returning more than 3000 hectares to Maori in the top of the South Island, along with 420-million dollars in compensation. Attorney-General, Judith Collins spoke to Corin Dann.

It just doesn't happen very often we record in a field surrounded by cows just after a cow gave birth to a calf. This last week has been incredible for me. After almost 5 years of being connected to different aspects of the work at the farm in La Junquera, first through my connection with Silvia Quarta the leader of Camp Altiplano, the first in the global Ecosystem Restoration Communities network back when I worked at the restoration coordinator, then through collaborations with Alfonzo and Yanniek through the Climate farming community, and also with their incredible staff of Clara, Jeronimo, and Jacobo in coordination and organizing, I was finally able to visit them in person. In the first few days we did some course planning and taught a two day intensive on water resource management for farmers. I stayed a few days to talk about their new collective project to restore the watershed of the Quipar river, and then represented Climate Farmers in a Benchmarks soil health program. It has been surreal to meet the heroes who are working tirelessly to pioneer regenerative management in their semi arid location and to build friendships that go far beyond the occasional zoom call. That brings me to our interview today with Silvia Quarta.
A conversation with Marco Carbonara, cofounder, owner and farmer at Pulicaro Farm, in Lazio, Italy. A special early morning walk through permanent pasture surrounded by multispecies graziers, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, chickens and, of course, some guard dogs, which means a lot of pleasant and present background sounds. We are in the hills between Rome and Florence and have the great pleasure to visit the farm of Marco and Chiara. Marco takes us on the morning walk to feel, smell, and see regeneration of permanent pastures in a Mediterranean landscape. Definitely not easy, but definitely possible, and yes, also profitable. How did Marco, who had no farming experience 20 years ago, approach regeneration back then, and how does he approach it now? When they take on new lands, what are the first steps, and how much has he learned over the last 20 years? What is the role of animals in regenerating the Mediterranean landscape, and how does he handle the challenging balance between running a company, needing to break even, and wanting to regenerate as quickly as possible? We also discuss the challenge of feed: is it okay to bring feed for the non-ruminants in your rotation from outside the farm when your soils can't yet sustain needy plants like wheat, barley, etc.? And if it is, how do you deal with the challenge of potentially competing for human food? We only scratched the surface because it's impossible to capture 20years of deep regeneration in just one hour, but we tried and we hope you enjoyed listening to it as much as we did recording it.https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/marco-carbonara---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. This week we have an extraordinary show. Chief Tashka Yawanawa, of the Yawanawa tribe in the heart of the Acre River region in the Amazon rainforest joins Brett King to talk the effects of climate change and deforestation happening today in the world's largest rainforest. The Yawanawa tribe are custodians of over 400 Hectares of Amazonian land and we get to hear first hand. If you have any doubt in your mind that climate change is impacting the planet, this is one you must listen to with an open mind.
After 4 years of extended drought, spring and summer rains finally provide relief to the US and Canadian prairies, but what does it mean for the fall flight? Dr. Scott Stephens joins co-hosts Chris Jennings and Dr. Mike Brasher for a mid-July update on breeding habitat conditions across the prairies and boreal forest. Because much of the rain came after ducks had settled and managers expect a relatively small breeding population count, waterfowlers probably shouldn't expect a banner crop this fall. Nevertheless, renesting and brood survival should benefit, and wetland conditions heading into fall will be better than they've been in years.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast
