Le dimanche 31 août à Tour-de-Faure, dans le Lot, le calme du Parc naturel des Causses du Quercy a laissé place aux slogans des manifestants. En ligne de mire : le projet de TotalEnergies, qui prévoit d'installer près de 44 000 panneaux photovoltaïques sur 19 hectares de forêts et de prairies semi-ouvertes. Des milliers d'arbres devraient être abattus pour faire place au chantier.Pour les opposants, le paradoxe est criant : au nom de l'énergie verte, on sacrifie des espaces naturels riches en biodiversité. Ici vivent mammifères, oiseaux, reptiles et insectes protégés, comme le capricorne du chêne ou le lucane cerf-volant. « Il y a déjà assez d'espaces artificialisés pour installer des panneaux solaires et couvrir nos besoins énergétiques », rappelle Sébastien Garreta, président de l'association Lot Célé, au micro de FranceInfo. L'Ademe, l'Agence de la transition écologique, partage ce constat. Elle recommande d'installer les panneaux sur des toitures, parkings ou zones déjà artificialisées, afin de limiter les impacts sur les sols et la faune. D'autant que les études scientifiques abondent dans ce sens : selon l'université de Yale, construire dans des espaces naturels peut dégrader la biodiversité sans réel gain pour le climat.Du côté des élus, le premier adjoint Jean-Louis Eyrolles défend le projet, affirmant qu'il permettra d'alimenter en électricité le développement touristique local. TotalEnergies promet de compenser en replantant des essences locales dans un rayon de 30 kilomètres. Mais pour les écologistes, l'équation n'est pas si simple. La montagne de Lure, en Provence, a déjà vu un projet solaire annulé pour atteintes environnementales. Depuis le permis de construire signé en janvier 2023, associations et riverains mènent la bataille judiciaire. La Cour administrative d'appel de Toulouse a validé le projet, estimant que le site n'avait pas d'intérêt biologique « remarquable ». Mais la mobilisation reste vive, et tous attendent désormais le verdict de la Cour de cassation sur l'autorisation de défrichement. Entre transition énergétique et protection de la nature, le Lot illustre un dilemme bien français : comment produire une électricité propre… sans sacrifier les forêts qui nous protègent déjà. More than two years ago, Cyclone Gabrielle washed thousands of logs and wood waste from forestry into Gisborne and surrounding areas. Now the Tai Rāwhiti region is tackling the problem by attempting to turn 100,000 hectares of forestry and pastural land back into native bush. Tai Rāwhiti-Hawke's Bay reporter Alexa Cook has more.

A couple of weeks ago our Kiwi Trust (Save the Kiwi) visited Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari (Waikato) – not just for a board meeting, but to see how a modern-day “muster” and translocation looks these days. It reminded me of a restoration exercise in a huge garden! Imagine having a sizeable territory of pretty cool forest, surrounded by a predator-proof fence. We're talking about 3400 Hectares of safe habitat for all sorts of New Zealand Native/endemic species from a couple of Kakapo to Takahe, stitchbird and saddleback as well as noisy kaka. And oh yes, there are more than 2000 North Island (Western) Brown Kiwi thriving in there as well. Thriving is the operative word. It certainly didn't always go that well in the past: the decline of North Island Brown Kiwi was about 2% per year, which triggered the then Prime Minister John Key suggest we should have a go at turning -2% into +2%. John MacLennan (Scientist and Trustee of Save the Kiwi) came up with the concept of Kohanga Kiwi. Imagine allowing a heap of kiwi to “do their thing” in such a forest and use that “Kohanga Kiwi” as a Nursery from which we can “harvest” plenty of birds to translocate to predator-controlled areas elsewhere – Capital Kiwi (Wellington), Tongariro Forest, Taranaki Mounga. Last year 222 birds were shifted to new and safe habitats in the North Island. This year it looks like there will be even more travellers in the Kohanga Kaupapa! Birds are caught during the day and at night with highly trained, muzzled kiwi dogs. The birds are tagged by bands or transponders, weighed and health-checked, before kept in a smaller forest enclosure. A day or so later, the birds are transported to their final destination: a forest that is protected from predators. The cool thing is that this Maungatautari Muster is taking place in the forest and in the local Pukeatua Primary school (Handy to have a spare classroom to assist in the kaupapa!). The kids follow what's happening with the Scientists and volunteers who catch the birds. They record the sizes, the weights, the age, and whether the birds are male or female. They also observe the health checks and note everything down on their own observation sheets. My goodness! I wish I was at such a primary school when I grew up, learning about the operations Manual of the Planet and how to restore our Ecological systems. Photo / Kim McGuire and the Maungatautari team This photo is a really good example of female vs male.  Gaia (left) is holding a sub adult female and Steven (right) a sub adult male. Both weigh just a little over 1.8kg, and yet you can see they carry that weight differently. The female has a longer body, flatter head, larger feet and curved bill. The male is a smaller bird, has a rounded head and much shorter body and smaller feet. This last week has been incredible for me. After almost 5 years of being connected to different aspects of the work at the farm in La Junquera, first through my connection with Silvia Quarta the leader of Camp Altiplano, the first in the global Ecosystem Restoration Communities network back when I worked at the restoration coordinator, then through collaborations with Alfonzo and Yanniek through the Climate farming community, and also with their incredible staff of Clara, Jeronimo, and Jacobo in coordination and organizing, I was finally able to visit them in person. In the first few days we did some course planning and taught a two day intensive on water resource management for farmers. I stayed a few days to talk about their new collective project to restore the watershed of the Quipar river, and then represented Climate Farmers in a Benchmarks soil health program. It has been surreal to meet the heroes who are working tirelessly to pioneer regenerative management in their semi arid location and to build friendships that go far beyond the occasional zoom call. That brings me to our interview today with Silvia Quarta.

A conversation with Marco Carbonara, cofounder, owner and farmer at Pulicaro Farm, in Lazio, Italy. A special early morning walk through permanent pasture surrounded by multispecies graziers, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, chickens and, of course, some guard dogs, which means a lot of pleasant and present background sounds. We are in the hills between Rome and Florence and have the great pleasure to visit the farm of Marco and Chiara. Marco takes us on the morning walk to feel, smell, and see regeneration of permanent pastures in a Mediterranean landscape. Definitely not easy, but definitely possible, and yes, also profitable.How did Marco, who had no farming experience 20 years ago, approach regeneration back then, and how does he approach it now?
