A couple of weeks ago our Kiwi Trust (Save the Kiwi) visited Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari (Waikato) – not just for a board meeting, but to see how a modern-day “muster” and translocation looks these days. It reminded me of a restoration exercise in a huge garden! Imagine having a sizeable territory of pretty cool forest, surrounded by a predator-proof fence. We're talking about 3400 Hectares of safe habitat for all sorts of New Zealand Native/endemic species from a couple of Kakapo to Takahe, stitchbird and saddleback as well as noisy kaka. And oh yes, there are more than 2000 North Island (Western) Brown Kiwi thriving in there as well. Thriving is the operative word. It certainly didn't always go that well in the past: the decline of North Island Brown Kiwi was about 2% per year, which triggered the then Prime Minister John Key suggest we should have a go at turning -2% into +2%. John MacLennan (Scientist and Trustee of Save the Kiwi) came up with the concept of Kohanga Kiwi. Imagine allowing a heap of kiwi to “do their thing” in such a forest and use that “Kohanga Kiwi” as a Nursery from which we can “harvest” plenty of birds to translocate to predator-controlled areas elsewhere – Capital Kiwi (Wellington), Tongariro Forest, Taranaki Mounga. Last year 222 birds were shifted to new and safe habitats in the North Island. This year it looks like there will be even more travellers in the Kohanga Kaupapa! Birds are caught during the day and at night with highly trained, muzzled kiwi dogs. The birds are tagged by bands or transponders, weighed and health-checked, before kept in a smaller forest enclosure. A day or so later, the birds are transported to their final destination: a forest that is protected from predators. The cool thing is that this Maungatautari Muster is taking place in the forest and in the local Pukeatua Primary school (Handy to have a spare classroom to assist in the kaupapa!). The kids follow what's happening with the Scientists and volunteers who catch the birds. They record the sizes, the weights, the age, and whether the birds are male or female. They also observe the health checks and note everything down on their own observation sheets. My goodness! I wish I was at such a primary school when I grew up, learning about the operations Manual of the Planet and how to restore our Ecological systems. HQ of Maungatautari Muster 2025 Kiwi out of forest and back to school Kiwi health check. Photo / Kim McGuire and the Maungatautari team This photo is a really good example of female vs male. Gaia (left) is holding a sub adult female and Steven (right) a sub adult male. Both weigh just a little over 1.8kg, and yet you can see they carry that weight differently. The female has a longer body, flatter head, larger feet and curved bill. The male is a smaller bird, has a rounded head and much shorter body and smaller feet.

This last week has been incredible for me. After almost 5 years of being connected to different aspects of the work at the farm in La Junquera, first through my connection with Silvia Quarta the leader of Camp Altiplano, the first in the global Ecosystem Restoration Communities network back when I worked at the restoration coordinator, then through collaborations with Alfonzo and Yanniek through the Climate farming community, and also with their incredible staff of Clara, Jeronimo, and Jacobo in coordination and organizing, I was finally able to visit them in person. In the first few days we did some course planning and taught a two day intensive on water resource management for farmers. I stayed a few days to talk about their new collective project to restore the watershed of the Quipar river, and then represented Climate Farmers in a Benchmarks soil health program. It has been surreal to meet the heroes who are working tirelessly to pioneer regenerative management in their semi arid location and to build friendships that go far beyond the occasional zoom call. That brings me to our interview today with Silvia Quarta.

A conversation with Marco Carbonara, cofounder, owner and farmer at Pulicaro Farm, in Lazio, Italy. A special early morning walk through permanent pasture surrounded by multispecies graziers, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, chickens and, of course, some guard dogs, which means a lot of pleasant and present background sounds. We are in the hills between Rome and Florence and have the great pleasure to visit the farm of Marco and Chiara. Marco takes us on the morning walk to feel, smell, and see regeneration of permanent pastures in a Mediterranean landscape. Definitely not easy, but definitely possible, and yes, also profitable. How did Marco, who had no farming experience 20 years ago, approach regeneration back then, and how does he approach it now? When they take on new lands, what are the first steps, and how much has he learned over the last 20 years? What is the role of animals in regenerating the Mediterranean landscape, and how does he handle the challenging balance between running a company, needing to break even, and wanting to regenerate as quickly as possible? We also discuss the challenge of feed: is it okay to bring feed for the non-ruminants in your rotation from outside the farm when your soils can't yet sustain needy plants like wheat, barley, etc.? And if it is, how do you deal with the challenge of potentially competing for human food? We only scratched the surface because it's impossible to capture 20years of deep regeneration in just one hour, but we tried and we hope you enjoyed listening to it as much as we did recording it.https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/marco-carbonara---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. On a perdu 8 500 hectares.
Esri Ireland, the market leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has announced that its digital mapping system is underpinning the GreenspaceNI Map, a first-of-its-kind interactive map of greenspaces and trails in Northern Ireland. This new map was made possible by grant aid investment from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), SportNI, and the Department for Infrastructure on behalf of the cross-departmental Strategic Outdoor Recreation Group. Created by Outscape, a not-for-profit organisation making it easier for people to enjoy the outdoors, the map currently records 85,818 hectares of publicly accessible greenspace and just over 1,700 miles (approx. 2,700 kilometres) of off-road trails in the region. The GreenspaceNI Map, built using Esri's ArcGIS technology and supported by geographic information consultancy Geolytical, aims to empower communities and promote healthier lifestyles by encouraging the public to utilise nearby greenspaces and trails. The map will help citizens to become more active by making them aware of their local parks and trails for both recreation or walking and cycling to school or work. It also highlights beaches, woodlands, and nature reserves that are open to the public. In addition, the comprehensive map will be used to inform planning policies and focus attention on the need for more greenspaces, as it provides clear evidence of inequitable access to these greenspaces in Northern Ireland. An analysis conducted with ArcGIS Pro found that 56.6% of people living in urban areas are within 400 metres of a greenspace, while 8.7% of people in rural areas, including small towns and villages, have this same level of access. The Northern Ireland Executive's draft Programme for Government Wellbeing Framework and DAERA's recently published Environment Strategy both commit to achieving an annual increase in the number of people who live within 400 metres of a greenspace or off-road trail, and the ongoing development of the GreenspaceNI Map will enable progress to be monitored over time. The map not only provides insights into where the greenspaces are, but also where they are not, and where there is a lack of provision. The tool will aid local planning and community engagement, helping authorities and community groups to advocate for better access to greenspaces. The key metrics from this geospatial analysis were also published to ArcGIS Online using Operations Dashboards and interactive ArcGIS StoryMaps. As Emma Taylor, GIS Technician at Outscape, explains: "ArcGIS provided us with a platform with which we could carry out complex geospatial analysis and rapidly share the results in a variety of engaging ways, without the need for coding or development work. To share the insight in an accessible way, ArcGIS Dashboards and StoryMaps bridge the gap between those with advanced GIS skills and those with no prior knowledge, making information easily accessible to everyone." Elizabeth Annett, Communication and Training Principal, Outscape, said: "Improving access to greenspaces is becoming an important policy priority. There was no way of quantifying publicly accessible greenspace before, but now we can monitor whether greenspace development is heading in the right direction. After 4 years of extended drought, spring and summer rains finally provide relief to the US and Canadian prairies, but what does it mean for the fall flight? Dr. Scott Stephens joins co-hosts Chris Jennings and Dr. Mike Brasher for a mid-July update on breeding habitat conditions across the prairies and boreal forest. Because much of the rain came after ducks had settled and managers expect a relatively small breeding population count, waterfowlers probably shouldn't expect a banner crop this fall. Nevertheless, renesting and brood survival should benefit, and wetland conditions heading into fall will be better than they've been in years.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

A conversation with Chris Henggeler, a second-generation high-density, low-duration herder using herds for land management. From one of the most remote places in Australia, we explore big myths like many animals damage the land, to a huge question: can we actually put the new megafauna to work? Farms need to get smaller, and ranches need to get bigger. If you want to retire in security, you have a vested interest in healthy landscapes. How do we invest as if our grandchildren mattered? How do we ground investing in ecology, and what human activity is restraining nature from building wealth? This and much more in the conversation with Chris.---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. Residents but one have also returned to their homes in Christchurch's Port Hills, where another major fire is still burning, five days since it began. Niva Chittock reports.
