Grading Paris Saint-Germain's Transfer Window + Champions League Preview

Paris Saint-Germain has yet to taste defeat this season, but that doesn't mean there isn't always room for improvement. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Marc Damon to dissect PSG's summer transfer window and preview the upcoming UEFA Champions League group stage, which kicks off next week against Juventus FC. We begin with the transfer window where PSG signed several players to strengthen the midfield especially, but also the overall depth of the squad. We also discuss the players who left the club and debate why Leonardo, PSG's former sporting director, was unable—or unwilling—to offload players like Julian Draxler and Layvin Kurzawa. One player who didn't leave, but was expected to, was Keylor Navas. Was this a case of no offers coming in for the Costa Rican, or, is this a sign that Christophe Galtier, PSG's manager, may not trust Gianluigi Donnarumma fully? After grading Luis Campos and Antero Henrique on their first transfer window for PSG, we turn our attention to the Champions League. The reigning French champions were drawn into a relatively easy group, but we discuss the challenges that Juventus and Benfica may present for Galtier who is relatively untested in the competition. We conclude the show with some talk about Ligue 1 broadcasting rights in the United States and the current form of Neymar Jr. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Today, I am talking to Gagan Palrecha, the CEO of NFTSTAR, a new Bay Area startup in the NFT sports space. Palrecha is an engineer by training and has been fascinated by sports & music since his youth. We cover some of the stops across his career, the build-up to his current role, including time at Dapper Labs as VP of Operations. We go deep into the blockchain, crypto, NFTs, Web 2.5 to 3.0, the metaverse, digital stadium, play-to-earn, and many more current buzzwords and of course, his vision for NFTSTAR.    Key Highlights Palrecha grew up playing sports & had a passion for music. After studying computer engineering and science, he was attracted to the startup scene in San Francisco in the early 2000s. Palrecha joined Loudcloud, a startup backed by VC company Andreessen Horowitz, before moving to a few other startups. As his first entrepreneurial exploits, Palrecha started First Time Records. Palrecha helped develop a space for artists and creators at the following businesses: Zattoo -- live streaming, the first virtual cable operator Peekok -- a platform to help artists and labels create a direct retail relationship with fans, via social and interactive marketing (early days of NFTs) Chirply -- fundraising for design marketplace 2013: Blockchain and Bitcoin  The concept of a distributed ledger that governs ownership without government interference fascinated him. Palrecha's experience at Dapper Labs: Crypto Kitty was the first big project for Dapper, before it was called Dapper Labs. The NBA took a risk and jointly created NBA Top Shot in 2020. By the end of 2020 and early 2021, NFTs took off and NBA Top Shot lead the way. Over 1 billion worth of trading volume with NBA Top Shot. What worked and didn't work at the height of NBA Top Shot: Dealing with backlogs and regulatory issues. Blockchain challenges and issues with bots. Challenges of the virtual trading card model.  NFTSTAR: Palrecha's vision as CEO (website: https://m.nftstar.com/)  NFTSTAR is building the biggest sports stadium in the Web3 metaverse. The company is working with athletes to build a direct relationship with fans.  Current projects with: Neymar Jr, Luis Figo, Son Heung-Min (Soccer) Giannis Antetokounmpo (Basketball) Christian McCaffrey (American Football) NFTSTAR is currently in its startup stage, with its first collection coming out in the fall of 2022 Beyond the usual NFT headshots, NFTSTAR will include mobile gaming elements, as well an interactive and immersive fantasy world around its athlete partners. Prioritizing a meta stadium and virtual stadium vision, NFTSTAR rewards the fans and viewers with avatars and more. NFTSTAR is funded through private investors, not through a token raise. Play-to-Earn discussion: There are many current challenges early play-to-earn games are facing—taking a look at Axie Infinity for example. NFTSTAR is looking at the game and user experience first before focusing on play-to-earn business strategies.  NFTSTAR is not building a speculative platform. Instead, members are rewarded for participation with special privileges or items. NFTSTAR athlete engagement: Upcoming Neymar NFT drop, where Neymar and his team are heavily involved. NFTSTAR is all about the athlete and how they grew up, where they come from, and what shaped them.  The company helps build a community around the athletes by prioritizing experiences. If you'd like to reach Palrecha, contact him at nftstar@vsc.co.   About Gagan Palrecha joined NFTSTAR as COO in September 2021, and is responsible for business development and operations, strategic partnerships, and product strategy. As the former Vice President of Dapper Labs, creators of NBA Top Shot and the Flow blockchain, Palrecha brings extensive experience and expertise in the NFT startup space. He has held several leadership positions in business development, product and operations and has done extensive work in Europe and Asia. He is also an active angel investor through his investment fund, Palrecha Capital. Paris Saint-Germain is already showing noticeable improvements on the pitch this season, but unfortunately, the drama that has embroiled this club since the Qatar Sports Investments takeover still lingers. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Marc Damon during PSG's Ligue 1 match against Lille OSC. We spend the entire first half discussing Penaltygate 2.0 and PSG's recent performances on the pitch. We also stop periodically to admire the four goals scored in the opening 45 minutes as well. First, we tackle the drama. Essentially, it boils down to this. Kylian Mbappé wants to be the first choice when it comes to taking penalties at PSG. Unfortunately, the Frenchman might be the third or fourth best penalty taker at the club. Neymar Jr. is clearly better at converting those chances, but following his decision to sign a new contract at PSG, Mbappé does have a more commanding voice regarding the sporting project. We discuss whether Mbappé has a clause in his contract that stipulates he takes all penalties, whether the situation has been overblown, and if Neymar is at fault for taking a penalty against Montpellier after Mbappé missed his chance. We then take a break from the penalty drama and focus on all the good happening on the pitch. Through the first three Ligue 1 matches, the reigning champions have outscored their opponents 17-3. How has Christophe Galtier, aka GOAT-ier, unlocked the potential of this team? Is it Sergio Ramos finally being healthy? The move to a back three? The addition of Vitinha? PSG's world-class full-backs? Ultimately, PSG's start to the season is an indictment on Mauricio Pochettino who fooled people into thinking Lionel Messi was washed up. We wrap up the show by previewing the upcoming UEFA Champions League draw and listing the teams we hope are drawn against PSG. In this episode Joe chats to freestyle footballer and online creative Jeremy Lynch. As one half of the F2 Freestylers, Jeremy started out performing his tricks at half-time shows and events, but it was when they started posting videos on Youtube that things really took off. He went on to work with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. His comedy skits on TikTok amassed millions of followers leading to opportunities to branch out into presenting, interviewing Hollywood A-listers like Tom Holland, Zendaya and Daniel Craig. Jeremy and Joe speak about his transition from footballer to creative and how it's enabled him to provide for his family. They discuss the amount of work involved in producing so much content, and why perfection is a flawed concept, even for a perfectionist. Jeremy talks about why reconnecting with nature has been hugely important to his mental health, his relationship with music, and why he prioritises adding value to himself and those around him both in real life and online. Paris Saint-Germain might be having the best offseason of any club in Europe. From Kylian Mbappé signing a new contract until 2025 to new leadership at the club, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic heading into the 2022-23 season. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Stu from Parisian Londoner (Instagram | YouTube) to discuss the many changes at the club that have taken place and what still needs to be done in order to win the coveted UEFA Champions League title. While I am very optimistic about the season and look forward to the squad's new direction under new manager Christophe Galtier, there are reasons to be concerned. The former OGC Nice and Lille OSC manager doesn't have much experience in the Champions League and he's never managed superstars like Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr. Up next, we discuss the possibility that Galtier will rely on PSG's talented youth players to fill out the squad and actually give them playing time to show what they can do. We discuss the youth players we're most excited about and how they could help keep PSG afloat with the FIFA World Cup scheduled to interrupt the season. We then turn our attention to PSG's superstars and predict what we might see from Mbappé, Messi, and Neymar Jr. Can the Frenchman take his game to the next level? At 35 years old, is Messi still a regular starter for PSG? And can Neymar rebound from an average season and finally lead PSG to a Champions League title? To wrap up the show, we give our prediction on Galtier's starting lineup and how many trophies PSG will win this season. The UEFA Champions League final is this weekend, but for Paris Saint-Germain supporters, the biggest trophy was won over the weekend. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Ty Taylor, James Teague, and Guillaume Delaporte to discuss to incredible turn of events that led to Kylian Mbappé turning down a chance to play for Real Madrid and instead, signing a new contract with PSG until 2025. We begin the show by asking the panel to share their initial thoughts on Mbappé's decision and what it means for PSG and Ligue 1 to have arguably the best player in the world staying in his home country of France. I also deliver a hot take that Mbappé was never really considering Real Madrid and went out of his way to troll their fans and the Spanish media. Next, I ask the panel why they think Mbappé decided to remain in the French capital. Was his decision based purely on money, as so many in the media have stated, or does he simply have a deep love for his home country and the city where he was born? We also discuss how Real Madrid fans reacted to the news, La Liga's threat to take legal action against PSG, and whether the Spanish champions would ever welcome Mbappé in the future if he wanted to come. While we don't have the official figures and terms of his contract, it's been reported that Mbappé will have a say in the sporting project at PSG. We debate whether this is a good thing for the club considering Neymar Jr. has had similar power in the past and that hasn't led to Champions League glory. Other topics we cover in the podcast include PSG's summer plans, changes in the hierarchy, and whether Mbappé does need to leave the French point at some point in his career to test himself against tougher competition. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. We're also on Discord! Come join PSG fans from around the world and have your opinion heard.

Golden Concept växte över 300 % procent under 2021. The season isn't over, but it feels that way for Paris Saint-Germain supporters. The loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League still stings and the outcome will have a lasting effect on the club for years to come. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Lee Davey who was at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and witnessed PSG collapse under the pressure and allow Real Madrid to snatch victory from their grasp. We start the episode with Lee sharing his feeling heading into the match and describing the atmosphere around the ground. Despite having a one-goal lead and outplaying Real Madrid, Lee explains why he was still nervous about facing a team that has the ability to turn up the pressure when it matters in the Champions League. The match turned on Gianluigi Donnarumma's mistake, which Karim Benzema capitalized on, but I ask Lee whether he thinks VAR should have overturned the goal. I also get his thoughts on who he thinks is to blame for the loss. Is it Mauricio Pochettino's fault, or, are players like Neymar Jr., Lionel Messi, and Marquinhos to blame? Mbappé was outstanding over the two legs against Madrid, but it wasn't enough and the France international suffered yet another defeat to Los Blancos. Episode 54: Neymar's Perfect Chaos with Luca Sarno Welcome to the 54th episode of the In The 11 Podcast! Today, Brendan Griffiths is joined by Luca Sarno as they discuss the documentary series, Neymar: The Perfect Chaos. He makes the important point that he sees Neymar as a footballer and examining him through that lens makes him very disappointed because of how much respect he has for Neymar's talent and skill. But after watching the documentary, Luca expresses his empathy towards Neymar as a person. Ideas flow back and forth as the two discuss the symbolism that Neymar eludes to of the “Joker” image perhaps suggesting that Neymar is battling with multiple sides of himself on a personal level. More on the psyche revolving around the documentary and the difference of the documentary from Neymar's reality in this episode so be sure to stay tuned!  The psyche of the characters, documentary, and audience: Luca shares how Neymar portrays himself as this nonchalant and strong persona but the reality portrayed in the documentary gave light to how Neymar is actually handling his mental state and how the constant pressure of the people looking at him has affected Neymar in an unhealthy way. Being compared to other football players that are at the peak of fame and under constant public attention as well, Neymar was different in the way that he was being seen, Neymar acted as if he did not owe what he does to the people that talk about him. Although, as much as he portrays that image, Luca explains how this specific symbolism of the Batman and Joker painting in his home is emblematic of how Neymar actually cared about his public image.  Heavy lies the name: Neymar Jr. being named after his father who is also a decorated athlete, his father has been, whether unconsciously or not, a source of pressure but nonetheless, Neymar Jr., as Luca shared played on a higher level than his father and in some respect, Luca sees that Neymar's father now telling him what he should do with his career and run the family company may have been fuelled by jealousy. The way that their relationship dynamics progressed from that of father-son to business partners. Neymar Jr's disconnect with his father due to the desire for him to be a part of the company. Understandably, Neymar Jr's desire to focus on football instead is a universal desire that players have in them, especially with football being a highly emotional sport.  About Luca Sarno: Semi-professional footballer originally from New York. Can play CM, CDM, CAM, LM and RM. Great at reading the game, moving the ball through the thirds, breaking down the opposition. Has great understanding of when to play short and when to play long, has very good range of passing, and excellent ball control. Also has European, American, and eligible for Trinidadian citizenship. ~ Outline of the Episode:  [00:01:38] About Luca Sarno and his career [00:05:07] Neymar Jr. before and after the documentary [00:13:22] The mentality and society as observed by Luca  [00:21:19] The restrained vulnerability exposed in the documentary  [00:28:19] The flaw of one of the best players of all time [00:34:33]  How the reality of football is portrayed in mass media [00:41:20]  Understanding why there's heat on Neymar [00:48:14] Luca's insight on Neymar's switch from Barcelona [00:58:22] Luca's reaction to Neymar's relationship with his father [01:06:57] The circumstance between Neymar and Neymar Jr.  [01:17:32] Where the disconnect may have started + challenges in the field ~ Connect with In the 11 Podcast! When it comes to Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League performances this season, you couldn't find two bigger polar opposites. This week, the rubber hits the road as the French giants travel to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium with a spot in the quarter-finals of the European tournament on the line. On this episode of PSG Talking, I join host Tyrone Taylor and long-time contributor James Teague to preview the highly-anticipated match between PSG and Real Madrid and highlight the hottest talking points surrounding the fixture. Up first, we discuss the news that dominated Twitter on Monday morning, which is, of course, the injury Kylian Mbappé sustained in training. At first, it was reported by ESPN that PSG's star player would be a doubt for the match against Real Madrid, and fans on both sides of the aisle took to social media to discuss what it meant for the tie. As the day continued, however, Mbappé's injury was reported to be not as serious as originally thought and that he was likely to feature against Madrid. We discuss the fan reaction, Idrissa Gueye's involvement in the injury, and why Mbappé doesn't wear some kind of bright yellow shirt that signals that he shouldn't be touched at any point in training. Up next, we discuss PSG's latest injury report. Outside of a few players, PSG's squad is fully available to Mauricio Pochettino. One notable name that is absent is former Real Madrid star, Sergio Ramos. Since arriving at PSG last summer, the 35-year-old has only featured in a handful of games and we question if he will make any kind of impact this season. We then turn our attention to Real Madrid's recent form where they are undefeated since losing to PSG in the first leg of the tie. Carlo Ancelotti will be without the services of Ferland Mendy and Casemiro due to suspension and may have a less-than-fit Toni Kroos. Will they be able to ride the emotion of their home supporters and put PSG under pressure, or, will the leadership of Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. be enough for PSG to withstand the storm? The show then concludes with a few predictions and plans for how we intend to spend our time if the match between PSG and Real Madrid goes into penalty kicks. On this new and improved episode of The 1970, Marc Damon and I chat all about PSG's win over Real Madrid on Twitter Spaces following the final whistle at the Parc des Princes and we're joined by fans around the world, including one Real Madrid supporter. The show begins with Marc and I sharing our thoughts on PSG's performance and how Mauricio Pochettino deserves credit for getting the tactics right. We also discuss Kylian Mbappé's special performance and how PSG was right in not accepting Real Madrid's offer last summer. Could a win against Los Blancos convince the Frenchman to stay in Paris? We also discuss how Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi shut down Real Madrid's attack and how they were able to get forward as well. What a difference having world-class full-backs can make! Later in the show, we welcome a Real Madrid fan to explain why his team looked so bad and whether they can turn it around in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium without Ferland Mendy and Casemiro due to suspension. Long-time PSG Talk contributor, Eddie Razo, dials in to give his thoughts on Lionel Messi's lackluster performance where he missed a penalty kick and what PSG fans should expect from him throughout the rest of the season. With the fanbase at odds, Paris Saint-Germain put forth another disappointing effort and time is running out on Mauricio Pochettino. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by Marc Damon and we discuss PSG's recent 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League and the future of the manager. If you were to just look at the standings, PSG is pretty much where you would expect them to be at this point in the season. They have a comfortable lead in Ligue 1 and they'll finish just behind City in the Group A of the Champions League. The problem is the performance on the pitch. Too often this season, PSG is outplayed despite possessing one of the most talented squads ever put together. Pochettino has yet to figure out how to unlock the team's potential, but as we discuss on the podcast, he has a month to change tactics and settle on a preferred starting lineup before the second half of the season kicks off. If Pochettino is unable to figure things out, there's only one man that Marc and I can see replacing him and that is Zinedine Zidane. He has experience managing world-class players and his resume as a manager is unquestioned. As things stand now, PSG claim there has been no contact with Zidane and Pochettino will remain as manager, but a few losses and poor performances and that could change very quickly. We also discuss the situation with Marco Verratti who is currently injured and missed the match against City. There's no questioning his talents, but his inability to be available for big games is a real problem for PSG and with a lack of midfield options, we wonder if PSG will sign a midfielder in January. We wrap up the show by discussing Neymar Jr.'s dip in form, especially when it comes to finishing in front of goal, and selecting who we think PSG will draw in the knockout stage of the Champions League. If you just looked at the standings, you would think everything at Paris Saint-Germain was going well. Unfortunately for Mauricio Pochettino, it's not good enough to just win, you have to do it with style and flair. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host Marc Damon to discuss PSG's last two results and why some supporters believe it's time to make a change at manager. We begin the show with a conversation about Pochettino. There's no denying that since the club's blockbuster transfer window, which saw the addition of Lionel Messi and several other world-class players, that the team has not hit the ground running. The offense looks sluggish, the midfield is often exposed, and the defense is often caught out of position. However, as Marc and I both explain, the results are there regardless of the performance and that alone has bought Pochettino some time to get things sorted out. Next, we discuss PSG's 0-0 draw against rivals Olympique de Marseille. We start by addressing the outrageous fan behavior at the Orange Vélodrome and why something must be done before someone gets seriously injured. We also talk about Marco Verratti's injury, Achraf Hakimi's red card, and why Pochettino needs to stop starting Angel Di Maria alongside Messi, Neymar Jr., and Kylian Mbappé. We close out this episode by talking about the narrow 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League, whether Pochettino should move to a back three defensive line, and how the German side exposed PSG's defense multiple times with the same attack. Paris Saint-Germain giveth, and Paris Saint-Germain taketh. It's been a rollercoaster of performances from Mauricio Pochettino's squad and with the international break now upon us, supporters are left wondering what direction the team is truly headed in. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by Marc Damon to discuss Paris Saint-Germain's recent results, including a 2-0 loss to Stade Rennais in Ligue 1 and a 2-0 win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. We discuss the team's identity, the progression of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar Jr. playing together, and the ongoing bias PSG faces in the media. Up first, we dive into Sunday's result against Rennes at Roazhon Park. Bruno Génésio had his men playing against PSG like it was a FIFA World Cup Final, whereas PSG wasn't as clinical in front of goal as you would expect and let several goal-scoring opportunities go by the wayside. Was it a case of forcing Angel Di Maria into the starting lineup or the fact that Pochettino hasn't been able to implement a consistent playing style? Next, we discuss the win over Manchester City where PSG was on the defensive for much of the game but managed to score on two of their three attempts on target. Is a counter-attacking style what we can expect in these big Champions League fixtures, or should Pochettino play "heavy metal" football and try to outscore teams given the offensive talent available to him? We wrap up the show by talking about the ridiculous post-match commentary by certain analysts after PSG defeated City. Paris Saint-Germain are undefeated since the start of the new season, but you would hardly guess that by the reaction of many supporters who want to see more from this super team. On this episode of The 1970 (recorded last Sunday prior to the win over Olympique Lyonnais), Marc Damon is joined by fellow PSG Talk contributor, James Teague, to recap the disappointing 1-1 draw against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League. James kicks things off with his thoughts on the match, which saw Ander Herrera give PSG the early lead only to see Brugge equalize before halftime. The draw felt like a loss for PSG, and fans were left wondering how a team with so much firepower could look so impotent. The issues are plenty, as Marc points out. The midfield lacks a defensive presence, especially with Leandro Paredes on the pitch. With PSG's attack-minded full-backs, the defense was left exposed and with very little coverage, Brugge found success in the attack. PSG's offense wasn't much better. Neymar Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi all started, but PSG only managed to record nine total shots with four on target. With the offense and defense struggling, all eyes turn to Mauricio Pochettino who is still figuring things out to put it kindly. There's a lot of quality in the squad, but right now, it's difficult to explain what PSG's identity is, and with two games against Manchester City coming up, supporters are desperate to see improvement. As the guys explain, the draw against Brugge will either be a wake-up call for PSG to sort things out or, foreshadowing of the drumming that City will lay upon Les Parisiens. Let's hope Pochettino can unlock PSG's potential quick, fast, and in a hurry. It's been a busy week for Paris Saint-Germain. On the latest 1970 podcast, I'm joined by my co-host https://twitter.com/marcdamon9 (Marc Damon) and we discuss all of the latest news regarding PSG. It's the perfect companion to get you through the international lulz... Up first, Marc and I explain why we're optimistic about PSG's https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/0267-11d56c46c101-1236a041c9bb-1000--champions-league-quarter-final-draw/ (upcoming tie against Bayern Munich) in the Champions League. Les Parisiens may have lost to the Germans in the final last year, but a lot has changed since then and with a new manager at the helm, it's possible we see a different outcome. Next, we react to the news from journalist Fabrizio Romano who reported that Neymar's contract is all but done and he'll be tied to PSG until 2026. What does this mean for PSG and how does it impact Kylian Mbappé's decision to sign an extension or not? Later in the show, we try to read between the lines of Leandro Paredes's https://psgtalk.com/2021/03/paredes-reflects-on-where-it-went-wrong-for-psg-under-tuchel/ (recent comments) about the former PSG manager, Thomas Tuchel. What did the Argentina international mean when he said, "We all needed a mental change?" We also recap PSG's 4-2 win over Olympique Lyonnais that saw the capital club move to the top of the Ligue 1 table. Can they go on to win the league and how will important domestic matches like this prepare the squad for Bayern? For the second time in four years, Paris Saint-Germain holds a significant lead over FC Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League heading into the second match. All they have to do is hold on. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host, https://twitter.com/marcdamon9 (Marc Damon), and we spend about 30 minutes or so previewing the big match between PSG and Barcelona at the Parc des Princes with Les Parisiens holding a 4-1 advantage over their European rivals. The show begins with our overall feelings on the final match of the tie and whether the potential is there for another catastrophic collapse like we saw in 2017 when PSG blew a 4-0 lead. In fact, PSG's last two managers (Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel) have blown leads in the Champions League in spectacular fashion, will Mauricio Pochettino reverse the curse? Next, we discuss the situation with Neymar Jr., who will https://en.psg.fr/teams/first-team/content/squad-paris-saint-germain-v-fc-barcelona-uefa-champions-league-2020-2021 (not be in the squad) to face his former team. The PSG superstar has https://www.beinsports.com/us/uefa-champions-league/video/neymar-returns-to-psg-training-ahead-of-barca/1649725 (returned to light training) but isn't 100 percent healthy. Should PSG at least have Neymar on the bench to gain a psychological advantage or are they doing the right thing saving him for an intense run of matches in Ligue 1 and the quarter-finals of the Champions League if they advance? Marc and I agree that the more boring the match is, the better things will be for PSG. If there is a red card decision against PSG and penalty decisions that favor Barcelona, things could go downhill very quickly. Make no mistake about it though, Barcelona's strategy will be to fall down in the box to deceive the referee and it will be up to PSG to play smart, fundamental football and not let Ronald Koeman's men get under their skin. To conclude the show, we give our predictions and look around at the rest of the Champions League competition. On February 16, PSG went to the Camp Nou for a rematch in the Round of 16 of the Champions League and proceeded to https://www.goal.com/en/news/barcelonas-brutal-reality-check-mbappe-inspired-psg-show-why/1ls16ie0j7ke91n9rzc6f0jlvn (dominate Barcelona by a score of 4-1). PSG's superior talent was on display and on the latest 1970 podcast, we discuss how Mauricio Pochettino led his team to one of the most famous victories in club history. Joining me on the show as always is https://twitter.com/marcdamon9 (Marc Damon) and we begin by sharing our overall thoughts on the match. The scoreline and performance were a surprise due to the simple fact that Neymar was out injured and he had become intricate to PSG's offense. He is the player who unlocks defenses and allows Kylian Mbappé to be special. Without the Brazilian, all eyes were on Mbappé, and boy did he deliver by https://psgtalk.com/2021/02/mbappe-now-the-3rd-player-ever-to-score-a-champions-league-hat-trick-against-barcelona/ (scoring a hat-trick). When it comes to talent, we agree that PSG probably isn't quite at the level of Manchester City and FC Bayern Munich depth-wise, but Les Parisiens have two of the top five players in the world and no one else can say that. With Pochettino now at the helm, if he can continue to get the most out of Idrissa Gueye, Julian Draxler, Layvin Kurzawa, and others, PSG could be a team no one wants to face in the latter stages of the Champions League. In terms of the game itself, we talk about the ridiculous penalty decision given to Barcelona when Frenkie de Jong went down in the box after inadvertent contact with Kurzawa. I think the call was egregious while Marc believes while unfortunate, the decision was correct. Later in the show, we discuss whether Neymar should play in the return leg if he's not fully healthy and what PSG's mindset should be heading into that match. You'll also hear us talk about the passing of Paredes and Kean's incredible form since arriving https://psgtalk.com/2021/02/had-allegri-remained-moise-would-never-have-been-sold-keans-older-brother-on-the-psg-forwards-departure-from-juve/ (via loan from Everton). On this episode of The 1970, recorded during Saturday's 2-1 win over OGC Nice, I'm joined by my co-host, https://twitter.com/marcdamon9 (Marc Damon), to preview the upcoming tie against FC Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. The last time these two sides met was during the Round of 16 of the 2016-17 Champions League. PSG won the first leg 4-0 at the Parc des Princes but went on to lose 6-1 in the return leg at the Camp Nou. Neymar Jr. suited up for the Catalan club at the time but left the following summer for PSG in a world-record transfer. Unfortunately, Neymar won't be available for PSG when they return to the Camp Nou on February 16. The superstar was https://www.espn.com/soccer/paris-saint-germain/story/4312465/psgs-neymar-injured-ahead-of-barcelona-match-in-champions-league (injured last Wednesday) in the Coupe de France against Ligue 2 side Stade Malherbe Caen. On the podcast, I express my frustration with that reality and question why Neymar was even in the lineup. We also look back to that 6-1 defeat in 2017 and debate whether that PSG squad is better than the one that will walk out on the pitch this Tuesday. Later in the show, we discuss what kind of tactics Mauricio Pochettino should deploy against Barcelona. Should he set up his side to play conservatively or more attack-minded? Who should start for PSG? The decisions Pochettino makes will ultimately determine whether the season is a success or failure. The Trophée des Champions was played a few months later than usual but it was the same outcome as always with https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/psg-vs-marseille-score-icardi-and-neymar-secure-pochettinos-first-silverware-in-trophee-des-champions/ (Paris Saint-Germain lifting the trophy) for the eighth consecutive season with a 2-1 win over rivals Olympique de Marseille. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined as always by my co-host, https://twitter.com/marcdamon9 (Marc Damon), and we discuss the win over OM that saw a first-half goal from Mauro Icardi and a https://psgtalk.com/2021/01/video-neymar-returns-from-injury-with-penalty-goal-against-marseille/ (late penalty from Neymar Jr.), who made his first appearance since returning from injury. In just the third match of the Mauricio Pochettino-era, https://psgtalk.com/2021/01/video-pochettino-celebrates-trophee-des-champions-win-with-the-psg-players/ (PSG has already won a trophy) and we discuss the positives we've seen in the squad since the former Tottenham Hotspur manager took over for Thomas Tuchel. If there's a negative to point out, it's the fact Kylian Mbappé still seems to be struggling. Could the Frenchman be dealing with fitness issues, or, is he at the point in his career where he's trying to figure out what type of player he wants to be? Later in the show, we discuss PSG's full-back situation and why the club needs to make a signing during the January transfer window, Marc fat-shames Dimitri Payet, we debate whether Icardi is a top 10 striker, and we conclude by answering questions from listeners, including what in the world is going on with https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/dec/15/ligue-1-clubs-stare-financial-abyss-tv-deal-collapses-mediapro (Mediapro and Ligue 1).
