Lawmen often kept the firearms of the people the arrested. After the siege and arrest of Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett kept a Winchester rifle and Colt revolver that belonged to Billy Wilson. Garrett used that pistol to shoot Billy the Kid in a darkened room in 1881. In 2021 the Colt revolver sold at auction of over 6 million dollars. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on The Decision Reel, we're heading to the Wild West as The Gang saddles up for a showdown with one of the most iconic modern westerns — Tombstone! We break down the legendary performances of Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer's unforgettable take on Doc Holliday, and dive into the gun-slinging action, quotable lines, and gritty 90s western vibes. Whether you're here to walk the line or just say, “I'm your huckleberry,” this episode's got you covered. Grab your spurs and meet us at high noon for a rootin'-tootin' good time. Yeehaw!
We wrap up Wyatt Earp's story with the years after the Vendetta Ride! Wyatt does a lot of traveling while purchasing many mines in places like Alaska and in areas around California. He consults on a few Hollywood movies and lives an otherwise quiet life up until his death on January 13th, 1929. After the gunfight at the OK Corral, tensions are high in Tombstone between the Earps and the Cowboys. It reaches a new level after Virgil Earp is ambushed and almost killed and Morgan Earp in gunned down while playing pool. Realizing the law will not help, Wyatt forms a posse and heads out on his infamous vendetta ride! Isaac, Cliff, and Jay interview Chad Pearson, author of the book Capital's Terrorists: Klansmen, Lawmen, and Employers in the Long Nineteenth Century. We discuss the armed, violent employer associations of the turn of the century, from the Klan to the Pinkertons. While most of our episodes look at the organization and self-activity of the oppressed, here we look at the organizers, activists, and agitators of the propertied. We discuss the ideological underpinnings of American vigilantism and the legacy of violence in American history.
The Earp and Cowboys situation in Tombstone is heating up as the tensions continue to rise and tempers are flaring. It all comes to a head in the infamous Gunfight At The O.K. Corral. We will take a look at the leadup to the fight, the trial afterwards and the events that led to the Earp Vendetta ride, which we will cover on our next remastered episode! On the evening of February 4, 1972, middle school friends Maureen Sterling and Yvonne Weber left their homes with a plan to hitchhike to the Redwood Empire Ice Arena in Santa Rosa, California—it was the last time either girl would be seen alive. Nearly one year later, the bodies of Maureen and Yvonne were discovered at the foot of a steep embankment in a rural part of Santa Rosa, identifiable only by the jewelry Maureen had been wearing the night she left the house. By the time the remains of Sterling and Weber were discovered, three other young women from the Santa Rosa area had gone missing or been found murdered, all of whom had been seen hitchhiking just prior to their disappearance. In time, law enforcement officials would link Sterling and Weber's murders to the other three woman discovered in 1972, and three others that occurred in the year that followed, all believed to have been killed by the same man or men. The Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders, as they're informally known, are one California's most perplexing cold cases in the state's history. In addition to the eight women believed to be victims of the same killer, there are several others who disappeared under similar circumstances and could potentially be additional victims. Although there have been several theories as to who was responsible for the deaths, including Ted Bundy and the Zodiac Killer, there has never been any evidence to positively identify the killer.Thank you to the brilliant David White, of the Bring Me the Axe podcast, for research!ReferencesCook, Stephen. 1975. Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and the shoot out at the OK Corral. Where a bunch of Lawmen finally take down the vicious Clanton Gang that's the story, it's also one of the best movies ever made but what really happened, The lines between good and evil were not so clear, it didn't even happen at the OK Corral which I feel is a detail you'd get right. Bill Dawes joins the show and recalls Adam choosing a bad walk-up song last time they performed in Nashville together. Adam pays tribute to his late friend Suzanne Somers, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 76, and compliments the loving relationship he witnessed between her and her husband Alan Hamel. Adam then shares a stressful experience while attending the 20th Anniversary screening of Windy City Heat and the guys laugh about some key scenes and memories from the movie. Next, the guys pull up some of Bill's recent tweets for a round of “tweet-splaining,” which leads to lively discussions about pedophiles, AOC, and parenting. Lastly, Chris reports some stories that have been dividing the internet - including CEO's wanting to blacklist Harvard students who blame Israel for the Hamas attacks, Rolling Stone's 250 Greatest Guitarist List, and a car not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign in Washington DC.
