The fourth annual Week Without Driving challenge kicked off on Monday. The event was created in 2021 by Disability Rights Washington to highlight the barriers nondrivers face, including those who have disabilities, with using public transit or sidewalks and bike lanes to get around. This year the challenge has expanded to all 50 states with the help of dozens of local and state organizations. And while it’s open to anyone, the organizers hope to recruit elected officials whose policies often shape public transit investments and planning decisions in local communities.   Joining us to share more is Abby Griffith, a Portland-based disability rights advocate and co-founder of Empower Movement Washington who is helping organize the event. The Columbian recently profiled her efforts to raise awareness of the mobility barriers she and others with disabilities face. Also joining us are two lawmakers: Khan Pham, the Oregon State Representative for House District 46, which covers outer Southeast Portland. She is also running unopposed for Oregon Senate District 23; and Claudia Balducci, a King County Councilmember in Washington state. She is participating in the challenge for the fourth time.

Local governments and nonprofits in the Portland area spent more than half a billion dollars fighting homelessness last year, a 70% increase from the year before, according to a new report. "The number itself was shocking," John Tapogna, a senior policy advisor at ECOnorthwest, which crunched the numbers, told KOIN 6 News. Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, which make up Oregon's Portland metro area, spent $531 million on homelessness interventions in fiscal year 2023, according to ECOnorthwest's analysis. The huge increase was driven in part by nearly $90 million in federal pandemic relief funds, as well as a regional homeless tax approved by voters in 2020, the report shows. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

When it comes to elevating your outdoor living space, nothing beats the charm and durability of a custom-designed concrete patio. In the heart of the Portland Metro Area, where the weather can be unpredictable, investing in a concrete patio offers homeowners a multitude of benefits that go beyond aesthetics. At The Wall, we specialize in creating bespoke concrete patios that not only enhance the beauty of your home but also stand the test of time.Durability in Portland's WeatherPortland's weather is known for its rain and occasional harsh conditions, which can take a toll on outdoor spaces. Concrete patios, however, are incredibly resilient and can withstand the elements much better than other materials. Unlike wood or composite decking, concrete doesn't warp, rot, or require frequent staining and sealing. A professionally poured concrete patio by The Wall ensures that your outdoor space remains pristine and functional year-round, providing a solid and reliable surface for all your outdoor activities.Efficient Storm Water Run-Off ManagementOne of the significant advantages of concrete patios is their ability to manage storm water run-off effectively. Properly designed concrete patios can be equipped with permeable surfaces or drainage systems that direct water away from your home, reducing the risk of flooding and erosion. At The Wall, our expert team can incorporate these features into your custom patio design, ensuring long-term protection and sustainability for your property. This is particularly crucial in Portland, where heavy rains are a common occurrence.Boosting Home Resale ValueA custom concrete patio is not just an investment in your present enjoyment but also in your home's future value. Homes with professionally designed and installed outdoor living spaces tend to attract more buyers and can command higher resale prices. A concrete patio adds a touch of elegance and functionality, making your property stand out in the competitive Portland real estate market. By choosing The Wall, you're ensuring that your patio is not only beautiful but also expertly crafted to enhance your home's overall appeal and value.Perfect for Family PicnicsWhen it comes to hosting family picnics and gatherings, a concrete patio offers a superior experience compared to a grass space. Concrete provides a clean, stable, and level surface that is perfect for setting up tables, chairs, and even grills. No more worrying about uneven ground, muddy patches, or grass stains. Whether it's a casual weekend barbecue or a festive holiday gathering, your concrete patio will be the ideal venue for creating cherished memories with family and friends.Schedule Your Free On-Site EstimateReady to transform your outdoor space with a custom concrete patio? You have the same things that you have before, but the company is now ours and the leads that you get are yours. The leads that I give can be half mine and half yours and everyone seems to be happy.”   [23:20] Steve on brokers and agents:“When they are succeeding and they reward you with some of their success, that's one of the best feelings, when somebody reaches that all-time goal. Everybody has a certain goal that you want to help them reach and when they do, that's super rewarding. “  [24:54] Steve on opening up a business franchise: “My fear is that it will continue to get more and more expensive to compete with technology as an independent and if you have agents who will work for you, you have to provide the same technology. The franchise just put that out together. There are franchises out there that will allow you to have the same freedom with your own team and have that technology that is on a higher level so that is a huge factor in the franchise.”   SUMMARY OF BUSINESSNexthome Realty - We are a high-energy and welcoming team of Brokers that constantly strive to deliver superiority of service and expertise to our clients. This podcast is intended to help disseminate relevant information to help in coordinating mutual aid efforts within the Portland Metro Area in Oregon. It is a direct response to the community needs that have dramatically risen with the onset of the coronavirus, COVID-19, which has become a global pandemic. We say needs that have dramatically risen because we know that many of these needs already existed long before the outbreak of the virus. We've seen some amazing mutual aid efforts taking place in Portland and, with this podcast, we wanted to create additional ways for communities in the area to receive important and timely information on resources and support. Our intention is to provide updates at least once or maybe even twice a day with relevant information to support our Portland communities in staying as healthy and safe as possible during these difficult times. We'll summarize credible news updates on things that impact our area and provide referrals to area resources and tips on how we can take care of ourselves and one another. We hope that this podcast will be valuable to folks as we build a solidarity movement in this time of this global crisis and beyond. Mutual aid is not only beneficial in times of disaster and crisis but is something we should be building together for our collective future—because capitalism is trash, it is destroying the planet and we cannot rely on the government and corporate billionaires.
