Aleksey Podlinov has called Portland, Oregon, home since 1998, embracing the beauty and culture of the Pacific Northwest. Deeply in love with America, Aleksey cherishes his life with his wife of 22 years and their three children. Aleksey's journey toward understanding life's deeper truths began after the sudden loss of his father to a heart attack just 15. This profound event left him with unanswered questions, prompting a spiritual awakening at the age of 22. Seeking clarity, he delved into the rich traditions of ancient Russian Christian literature, as well as Greek, Egyptian, and Hindu religious text, searching for meaning and answers to his experiences, including persistent sleep paralysis. His passion for exploring and discussing faith led Aleksey to become a radio show host in Portland, where he engaged listeners in thought-provoking conversations about religion and challenged aspects of modern Christianity. To this day, Aleksey continues to inspire others to explore spirituality with open minds and hearts. Send us a textDr. Andrea Love of Immunologic is back for Part 2. This week we're talking politics. The political spectrum isn't as divided as it looks—turns out both sides can latch onto the same sketchy ideas, just for wildly different reasons. Dr. Love takes us back to the first anti-vax wave in the 1970s:Liberals were all about “no toxins, no chemicals, keep it natural!"Conservatives, on the other hand, didn't trust the government and didn't want to be told what to do.Fast forward, and here we are with the booming (and unregulated) supplement industry—a 50+ year effort to make people doubt the government, science, and even basic safety standards. You may also recognize another political mantra... MAHA, RFK Jr.'s “Make America Healthy Again” platform, exploiting the country's health challenges to fuel outrage at Big Food, Big Pharma, and, honestly, probably Big Spoon at this point.Lastly, you've got questions... We've got answers. Or maybe more questions? Dr. Love rapid-fire on today's hottest topics:Probiotics? Mostly hype, barely proven for much.Food sensitivity tests? Food sensitivity is not a medical condition—case closed.Ultra-processed food? The term means nothing—processing isn't inherently bad.Seed oils? They're fine. Seriously. Good fats, even.Masks? Use them when it makes sense for you and your loved ones.Carnivore diets? Overhyped. For real health improvements, talk to a dietitian.Metabolic reset? No magic switch here—just consistent, unsexy healthy habits.Family gatherings, social media, and uncomfy conversations—how do we fight misinformation? Stop resharing garbage—screenshot it if you need receipts. Share credible sources, and speak up when you see harmful nonsense (safely, of course). We've all got a part to play. Follow along with Dr. Love and the other science resources she recommends in today's episode. What's Inside:Let's get political, political (does either side get it right?)MAHA—does one of those A's stand for angry? Because it should.Rapid fire hot button topics…what's the truth?Compatting misinformation online and in person. Dr. Angela Love is impressive, dude!! And I really wanted to leave this conversation feeling confident in who I trust and where to seek information. Turns out it is a hell of a lot more nuanced than that. Jerome Gilgan grew up in a turbulent household marked by an abusive, alcoholic mother, two sisters, and the absence of a father figure. The emotional void and feelings of isolation from his upbringing drove Jerome to express his pain through violence—punching walls, getting into fights, and struggling academically. His school, eager to rid itself of a troublesome student, graduated him from 8th grade despite his failing grades. High school proved no different, and he was expelled after just eight months. Jerome's struggles escalated when tragedy struck. His cousin and closest friend, Michael, died in his arms—a devastating event that led Jerome to alcohol in a desperate attempt to numb the pain. By 14, he was using and selling marijuana, and his first arrest followed soon after. A second arrest at 15 led to an ultimatum: his mother kicked him out of the house. Homeless and hungry, Jerome resorted to breaking into homes to survive. At 18, Jerome left New Jersey for Portland, hoping to evade the police and start fresh. Instead, he fell deeper into addiction, turning to methamphetamine. For 21 years, Jerome's life spiraled into chaos as he became entrenched in meth use, serving seven years in prison and three in jail for drug-related offenses. Despite going through four drug treatment programs, nothing seemed to help. Everything changed when Jerome was referred to the Men's Residential Center (MRC). Unlike previous programs, the MRC took a holistic approach, challenging Jerome to reevaluate his life and his self-worth. “This program was different,” Jerome reflects. “It wasn't just about taking classes. It was about learning how to see life and myself through a new lens. I learned how to communicate and even went into schools to share my story and warn students about the dangers of drugs. For the first time, I felt like my life had a purpose and could positively impact others.” In 2003, Jerome graduated from the MRC and has remained clean ever since. Motivated to give back, he accepted a job offer two years later as a residential counselor at the MRC. Jerome's determination didn't stop there—he graduated from Portland Community College in 2007 with honors and became a certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Today, he serves as the residential treatment supervisor at the MRC while pursuing a master's degree in social work at Portland State University, becoming the first person in recovery to hold a leadership role at the MRC. “I owe my life to Greg Stone, the program director, and the MRC,” Jerome says with conviction. “My loyalty to the program is unwavering. All I want is to be part of it, to help save someone else, and to give others the same hope I was given.” ___ Find out more about Andrea Love, and her services here: andrea.love Find out more about The House of Healing & Love here: thehouseofhealing.love ___ All production by Cody Maxwell. sharkfyn.com Artwork by Heather Grace Gordy. Celery juice. Coffee enemas. Ozone therapy. The list of pseudoscientific cancer "treatments" is endless. Yet they all risk pushing people in vulnerable positions toward untenable "cures." Dr Andrea Love joins Derek Beres to discuss the dangers of cancer misinformation, as well as why the field of cancer research is so complex—and rewarding. Send us a textClickbait headlines, shady supplements, and sketchy policies—oh my! Enter Dr. Andrea Love, an immunologist and all-around impressive human.Frustrated by medical misconceptions, Andrea founded Immunologic with a mission to replace fear with curiosity and equip people with critical thinking skills.Medical organizations and safety or science agencies each have distinct roles, but their flexibility is often shaped by government policies. To navigate their guidance, rely on 2-3 solid, reputable (and relevant) resources—trusting just one source is like building a table with only one leg: it won't hold up.Research doesn't happen overnight. It's a marathon, not a TikTok trend. And as demographics represented become more overall present, it takes time for that to reflect. With the wave of attention to menopause in the media, women are the primary target of the wild west of unregulated supplements. Dr. Love warns about “Hormone hacks”. These claims are red flags built for sales, not science.Providers are in the trenches; how can they help patients survive this predatory landscape?By walking people through data (not fear) and translating science into—as Dr. Love bluntly puts it—something a 4th grader can understand. Some experts overuse jargon or discredit others. Don't get caught up in the Huberman Hype and be critical of red flags: conflicts of interest, excessive jargon, and acting like the authority on everything.Remember: Real experts know their limits—and yours. When it comes to food and health challenges, it's important to acknowledge when something is hard, and when something is a problem. But an accurate understanding of HOW exactly something is a problem is ESSENTIAL when choosing where to invest our energy in terms of solutions.Because fear based narratives, and cherry picked or incomplete data - rather than help solve the problem - can actually become obstacles to connecting with real solutions. Jonathan and Chris speak to Dr. Andrea Love, a microbiologist, immunologist, science communicator, and the director of the American Lyme Disease Foundation. The tick-borne illness known as Lyme disease is everywhere: on the news, on social media… but is it really near you? Dr. Love separates facts from fiction when it comes to Lyme disease, both the acute infection and the alleged chronic condition. Correction (2024/07/24): Dr. Love wanted to correct a statement she made. She said that tick-borne relapsing fever does not occur in the U.S., but she meant that it did not occur in the eastern U.S. It does occur in western U.S. states but is caused by a different Borrelia species and spread by different ticks, so there is no overlap with Lyme disease. * Theme music: “Fall of the Ocean Queen“ by Joseph Hackl. Every year, the Environmental Working Group, a Washington, DC-based lobbying group, publishes its “Dirty Dozen” report, which supposedly informs consumers about the 12 “dirtiest” fruits and vegetables. The report is repeated verbatim by major media outlets, which routinely demonize strawberries, blueberries, and other conventionally-grown produce. But does their science hold up? Not according to the majority of scientists and researchers. Over the decades, the EWG has slammed some pesticides but not others, ignored data on dosages, and even wondered out loud if all that mercury in vaccines might just be causing autism. They also routinely ignore potentially hazardous organic chemicals, while selling “verified” labels for skin care products and sunscreens. Today Derek is going to walk me, the non-science journalist, through the work of the EWG before he talks to biomedical scientist Dr Andrea Love and cosmetic chemist Dr Michelle Wong about the group's questionable methodologies and fear-mongering tactics. Dr. Andrea Love on milk safety, food anxiety & chemophobia Ever since fragments of the H5N1 virus (also known as avian influenza or HPAI) were detected in milk, the safety of our dairy supply has come into question, with some wondering if they should forego dairy in favor of alternatives, and others gravitating toward raw milk. In this episode of the Food Bullying podcast, Dr. Andrea Love brings some insight into the nature of viruses, the history of pasteurization, and – long story short, why you can still feel good about pouring yourself a glass of milk. She talks through the specific testing measures in milk and dairy products around bird flu, also known as bovine influenza A virus (BIAV) in cattle. Dr. Love is a biomedical scientist and award-winning science communicator with a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology with over a decade and a half of experience in basic sciences, translational medicine, and clinical research. Outside of her full-time career in life science biotechnology, she has a passion for helping the public and healthcare professionals understand complex science topics to navigate the world better. She is the Founder of ImmunoLogic, a science education organization that aims to improve science literacy, the Executive Director of the American Lyme Disease Foundation, and a contributing author for numerous science and health organizations. While the conversation focuses largely on H5N1 and dairy products, Dr. Love also touches on the impact of social media on orthorexia, the parallels between orthorexia and chemophobia, and how she wishes the general public had a better understanding of hazard vs. risk (which she reviews in detail on this episode). Welcome, everyone, to a thought-provoking journey through the heart of a story that's been stirring the wellness community: the recent controversy involving Andrew Huberman. As your host, I'm diving deep into what this means for us all—whether we're sharing information or seeking it. Today, we're unpacking the complexities of science communication, the essential need for critical thinking, and how transparency can light our way in the vast wellness landscape. Summary In this episode, I reflect on the ripples caused by the controversy surrounding Andrew Huberman, a figure who has wielded significant influence in the health and wellness domain. We'll explore the impact this has on the way we communicate science and how it challenges us, as consumers, to be more discerning in the health information we digest. I'll share insights on the vital role of evidence-based information and offer guidance on navigating the sea of content to find beacons of trust and clarity. Takeaways The Huberman controversy shines a spotlight on the critical need for us to sharpen our discernment when consuming health information. Remember, the credibility of a health communicator is not just in their title but in the evidence and humility they bring to the table. It's about prioritizing hard evidence over compelling anecdotes or selective studies. Facts should guide our health decisions. Seeking out science communicators who embody transparency and humility is crucial. These are the voices that can truly enlighten us. Adopting a personalized approach to health and wellness, grounded in nuance and evidence, is essential. There's no one-size-fits-all solution. Being selective and questioning in our consumption of health information is not just wise—it's necessary for our well-being. This controversy serves as a stark reminder of the fine line between influence and integrity in the wellness industry. Embracing skepticism and inquiry is a powerful stance in the pursuit of health and wellness. Sound Bites "I'm here to remind myself and you that in the realm of health communication, humility and evidence are our guiding stars." "Let's not forget, our strongest asset in navigating health advice is a questioning mind—seek evidence, embrace nuance, and always look for the science behind the claim." "This episode, this controversy, is a moment for all of us to reflect on how we engage with wellness narratives. It's a call to critical thinking and discernment in an age flooded with information." Conclusion As we wrap up today's exploration into the complexities of health and wellness controversies, let's carry forward the lessons learned. It's clear that as we journey through the wellness landscape, armed with a critical eye and a heart for truth, we can navigate the choppy waters of health information with confidence and care. We love our scicomm episodes, because they really dig into the material heart of the conflicts this project tries to understand. What is this information chaos tearing apart public health? How do you push back against it? What does “follow the science” mean to the average voter? And how do we push back against influencers who exploit the difficulties of science and the reasonable fear that erupts when a virus is on the loose? One answer is that we produce the best content we can, and our guests today, Drs Andrea Love and Jessica Steier have the chops. Like us, they started the popular “Unbiased Science” podcast during the pandemic in the midst of a tsunami of confusion. Only they come at it from within the sciences: Andrea is an immunologist and biologist who specializes in infectious diseases immunology, cancer immunology, and autoimmunity, while Jessica is a public health scientist who has designed and led multiple COVID-19 related research and science communication projects. This week, they tell Derek why the new COVID boosters are important, discuss the challenges of science communication in an age of misinformation, and confirm that colloidal silver and essential oils are not, in fact, immune boosters.
