Der Sänger ist das Gesicht einer Band und für viele Fans deswegen auch der Hauptdarsteller im Kollektiv, aber ist das auch wirklich so? It may be a week or so later than we intended but – as promised – the Nine Circles Audio Thing is back with our Album of the Month for July!Candidates were offered up on the gnarled stonework that is the 9C dais, and despite strong arguments by Ian for the storming dissonant fretwork of Occulta Veritas, Colin's impassioned please for the frigid and beautiful Finnish black metal of Autumnfall, and Dan's out in the wilds remote pitch for the all guns blazing power metal of Orden Ogan, only one could wear the mantle of Album of the Month. As this month's presiding Host and Arbiter of Metal Justice (and therefore the only one without a candidate to proffer), Chris got on one knee and handed the rose to Vince and his pitch for the ever evolving and mutating gothic black metal post-punk emo warmth of Vuur & Zijde and their debut full length Boezem (Prophecy Productions).Lots of ground covered, as the gang gets into the difference between blending genres together as opposed to letting them sit haphazardly side by side, the love of a good warm muffled thump in your production, as well as the merits of forging new ground vs. flawless execution of a tried and true formula. We talk about the similarities between black and power metal, and three of us even geek out royally (sorry, Colin!) over 70s era Genesis…and that's before we get into what else we've been listening to in the month of July! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram

On Episode 32 of Terminus, we've got another quintessentially Terminus lineup -- some true Finnish BM, some Russian DSBM, some stomping Yorkshire boot-black, aaaaand some technical brutal death metal. We lead off with an in-depth review of Horna's massive new monument, Kuoleman Kirjo, their first record in 5 years and their most ambitious in 11. We place it in the context of Horna's lengthy catalog, and try to capture what's so new about the songwriting and album structure. Don't worry, it still sounds like Horna! Next up, we check out the melancholy, stripped-down Slavblack of Depths of Despair, which The Death Metal Guy hears as a distillation of how black metal has changed over the last ten years. But are these the changes that The Black Metal Guy loves, or the changes The Black Metal Guy hates? The second half kicks off with a palm-muted 16th-note run, as we hit the next stop on TDMG's guided tour of that most misunderstood of subgenres, brutal death. He floats an interesting theory about the nature of the nowadays brutal DM band -- what could such a hideous alien assemblage have in common with a jazz quartet? Finally, we close with a lengthy conversation about the taciturn, stoically resistant spirit of White Medal's northern English punk BM. The Black Metal Guy feels like he finally Gets It, but will The Death Metal Guy be equally impressed? Let's find out....   00:00 - Introductory bullshitting / interview plug 03:35 - Terminus News ft. Blynd Submyshynz is a podcast from the wild minds of Jeff Wilson (KOOK, Glory or Death Records, Heavy San Jose) and JD Norton (Heavy San Jose). Our goal is to expose you to new music in the DIY scene, and hang out with musicians we know or want to know better. Every week we'll take submissions from any band who finds our email address (blyndsub@gmail.com)...listen to them for the first time with our special guest and give honest reactions, and talk about things affecting DIY musicians around the globe. We come in hot with drinks and ice clinking ASMR, and talk to Amy about teaching piano, jamming at home, coming up as a classical pianist, and her old punk band that played the Warped tour (while she was 8.5 months pregnant). The merch table was busy this week, covering Haunt, Zeal & Ardor, Mastodon, and a new pedal that Amy's husband Jon gifted her.We shout out to Bizarre Albums and Tony Thaxton for covering Plantasia. Of course we had to sample some of Mort’s other music, including Cathedral of Pleasure, from his album Music for Sensuous Lovers. We then talk about Year of the Cobra’s latest release, a cover of Black Sabbath’s Planet Caravan on the Magnetic Eye Records Black Sabbath tribute release. Amy then spills the beans that they recorded a track for a Blue Oyster Cult cover project that was started by the late Steve Hanford (rest in peace Thee Slayer Hippy), and is being completed by Steve’s partner Ian Watts and put out on Ripple Music. We spend a few minutes talking about what a cool and weird lineup their label Prophecy Productions has. Also...Jadd Shickler...come on baby...be our guest! And stick around after we wrap up, because we dropped the full version of their cover of Planet Caravan at the end! When I first heard about Thief, I was skeptical.  I was about to embark on a short tour with one of Toby Driver's various projects, (Piggy Black Cross), and Toby told me Thief from Los Angeles would be joining.  That first night of tour Dylan and Thief stunned me with the craft of their songs, the passion in their performance, and I was instantly impressed with their unique and dynamic shows each night. Now, a few moons later, we have shared the stage a handful of times and Thief has cemented itself as one of my absolute favorite bands.  In 2019 Thief released "Map of Lost Keys" on Prophecy Productions.  The album is a rich and emotional dive into the musical mind of Dylan Neal, who writes and records all the music himself, but is joined by two others for live performances. Come listen to us get unhinged while we discuss production techniques, obscure bands from the Czech Republic, racism in art, and of course, share music... and don't forget to pass the aux!     -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli, performed by Billy Smeer.
