In Episode 154 of the Metal Maniacs Podcast, host Jay Ingersoll sits down with Michigan metal veterans Withhold The Blood to break down over 16 years of grinding through the underground scene. From their early inception around 2010 to their latest 2026 single Nation of Fallacy, this episode dives deep into evolution, persistence, and crushing riffs. We talk about the current lineup featuring Jesse (vocals), Eli (drums), and Brandon (guitar), and how the band has stayed alive through lineup changes, limited online presence, and years between releases. Despite the chaos, the passion for heavy music never left.We revisit their early work including the 2014 EP Detached From Reality, featuring long-form songwriting, massive riffs, and vocal highs reminiscent of Randy Blythe. Tracks like “The Chosen” and “Eye For Misery” showcase their early blend of groove, melody, and raw aggression. Then we dig into 2018's Aberration, where the band leveled up—introducing heavier tones, tighter production, double bass intensity, and stronger deathcore influences. Songs like “Impulse to Kill,” “Broken Dreams,” and “Empty Confessions” highlight their growth in songwriting, rhythm, and technicality.Their newest release, “Nation of Fallacy” (2026), pushes even further—leaning harder into deathcore with relentless vocals, sharp melodic experimentation, and standout guitar work. This track feels like a natural evolution of Aberration while carving a heavier, more refined identity. We also cover:The band's origin and what kept them going for over a decadeLineup changes including past drummers like Levi Smith, Gary Swaggerty, and Mike MillerTheir writing process, riff development, and solo decisionsProduction approach, tone, gear, and tuning choicesLive shows, touring history (including 2019 runs), and recent gigs with VestigialPractice routines and collaboration dynamicsLife outside music, gaming, and influences they're listening to nowWhat's next for Withhold The BloodThis is a must-listen for fans of metalcore, deathcore, groove metal, and underground heavy music culture.

ABOUT NAT SEGALOFF'S BOOK HURRICANE BILLYOriginally published in 1990, Hurricane Billy: The Stormy Life and Films of William Friedkin is at last available again with a new foreword and extensive afterword written in assessment of William Friedkin's career following his 2023 death. Biographer Nat Segaloff draws upon his fifty-year friendship with the controversial director of The French Connection, The Exorcist, To Live and Die in L.A., Cruising, and his greatest achievement, Sorcerer.. This was the first book to offer an intimate portrait of the director. BearManor Media is proud to bring this work back into print. Nat Segaloff's Hurricane Billy: The Stormy Life and Films of William Friedkin is an in-depth look at this mercurial filmmaker of "The French Connection," "The Exorcist," Sorcerer" and other dynamic classics. Billy (his friends called him that) was as explosive as his movies. He was known to hit actors, shoot off a handgun to get an effect, and tell people off to their faces regardless of the consequences. Nat knew him for 50 years and wrote "The Exorcist Legacy" (2023) as well as more than 30 other books, mostly about movies. "Hurricane Billy" was written with Friedkin's participation in 1990 and is being republished after disappearing on its publication 35 years ago.ABOUT THOMAS CLAGETT'S WILLIAM FRIEDKIN: FILMS OF ABERRATION, OBSESSIIN & REALITYWilliam Friedkin: Films of Aberration, Obsession, and Reality was first published in 1990 and has been massively revised and expanded it for this new 2026 edition. It covers all of Friedkin's films in detail, and explores the connections between the man and his movies, as well as their cinematic legacy. It is incredibly provocative in showing how Friedkin's films reflect not only the man who made them but also the world he lives in. Tom went to USC and worked on "The Two Jakes" and "St. Elsewhere" as an assistant editor and since then has won awards for his books in the genre of historical fiction.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

You can become a member by making a small monthly pledge hereShow notesIn a packed edition of Spotlight, we start our Discourse Digest segment with a dive into the men's 5000m, where non-African athletes have taken control of the rankings and victories so far in 2025. Is this an aberration, or the beginning of a trend in distance running? We discuss what might be shifting in the sport to close the gap.Next, we explore the phenomenon of athletes switching national allegiance—this time with Jamaican sprinters now competing for Turkey. Ross and Gareth look at historical examples from track, rugby, cricket and football, while defending the right of athletes to make these switches, and the necessity for sport to minimize them. Discussion shifts to the case of a trans cricketer who has claimed “no advantage” based on test results and comparisons to females. Both the science and logic behind the appeal are bluntly rebutted by Ross, who explains how the science is being misused, and that these "data snapshots" actually reveal a mediocre male with advantage rather than a trans athlete without advantage. We also return to youth sport after Gareth flagged eye-catching performances by 10- and 13-year-olds in the UK. While their talent is undeniable, we ask whether early hype might do more harm than good?In Ross Replies (30:00), Ross has an 'off-week', because listener Ewan Morris' fascinating insights carry the segment. He explained how some young athletes experience an expiratory flow limitation during breathing, because lung growth outpaces airway development, as yet another challenge that adolescent athletes experience in the journey to adulthood. In Listener Lens (33:51), we respond to Sean's question about muscle cramps in an ultrarunner he coaches. Ross breaks down two theories—electrolytes vs. fatigue-induced failure of neural regulation—and explains why cramp is far more about the nervous system than sodium and magnesium. We also learn the fascinating reasons why pickle juice may work... but not for the reasons people think, and offer suggestions for what Sean might consider adding to the plan.In Center Stage (53:33), we revisit sports science's replication crisis. Gareth shares his frustration at the sciences, while Ross explores the structural issues behind shaky science, and offers a partial defence of the failures to produce robust science. And Finally (1:15:16), we look ahead to Faith Kipyegon's attempt at a sub-four minute mile, which haunted Ross' dreams, and we make our predictions. Some linksDistance running shifts: Aberration or a narrowing gap?A review exploring the causes of muscle crampsStudy showing that electrolyte loss is not associated with muscle crampThe pickle juice effect Hosted on Acast.
