Join DiscourseDiscourse is our VIP community where listeners share insights, opinions and perspectives on the stuff we love to talk about. You can become a member by making a small monthly pledge hereShow notesIn a packed edition of Spotlight, we start our Discourse Digest segment with a dive into the men's 5000m, where non-African athletes have taken control of the rankings and victories so far in 2025. Is this an aberration, or the beginning of a trend in distance running? We discuss what might be shifting in the sport to close the gap.Next, we explore the phenomenon of athletes switching national allegiance—this time with Jamaican sprinters now competing for Turkey. Ross and Gareth look at historical examples from track, rugby, cricket and football, while defending the right of athletes to make these switches, and the necessity for sport to minimize them. Discussion shifts to the case of a trans cricketer who has claimed “no advantage” based on test results and comparisons to females. Both the science and logic behind the appeal are bluntly rebutted by Ross, who explains how the science is being misused, and that these "data snapshots" actually reveal a mediocre male with advantage rather than a trans athlete without advantage. We also return to youth sport after Gareth flagged eye-catching performances by 10- and 13-year-olds in the UK. While their talent is undeniable, we ask whether early hype might do more harm than good?In Ross Replies (30:00), Ross has an 'off-week', because listener Ewan Morris' fascinating insights carry the segment. He explained how some young athletes experience an expiratory flow limitation during breathing, because lung growth outpaces airway development, as yet another challenge that adolescent athletes experience in the journey to adulthood. In Listener Lens (33:51), we respond to Sean's question about muscle cramps in an ultrarunner he coaches. Ross breaks down two theories—electrolytes vs. fatigue-induced failure of neural regulation—and explains why cramp is far more about the nervous system than sodium and magnesium. We also learn the fascinating reasons why pickle juice may work... but not for the reasons people think, and offer suggestions for what Sean might consider adding to the plan.In Center Stage (53:33), we revisit sports science's replication crisis. Gareth shares his frustration at the sciences, while Ross explores the structural issues behind shaky science, and offers a partial defence of the failures to produce robust science. And Finally (1:15:16), we look ahead to Faith Kipyegon's attempt at a sub-four minute mile, which haunted Ross' dreams, and we make our predictions. Some linksDistance running shifts: Aberration or a narrowing gap?A review exploring the causes of muscle crampsStudy showing that electrolyte loss is not associated with muscle crampThe pickle juice effect Hosted on Acast. Dimes and Judas discuss Trump holding the President of South Africa to account for all the murdered Whites, James Comey announcing a new false flag with weird seashell math, and a tour through the failed scammers Dimes has known in his life. After discovering a study showing most English majors in college can't read properly, they swing into a review of the book “Stalin's War: A New History of World War II” by Sean McMeekin. An exhaustive exploration of Stalin's agitation of international conflict for the Soviet Union's benefit, it lays out a model for international relations that explains the role of Communism in the 20th century as much more realistically antagonistic. Lastly, on this edition of The Copepranos Society, Dimes welcomes back Clossington to discuss Alexander Hamilton, the Mingo Creek Association, and the violent history of taxes in America.

Spherical aberration is a term often used in ophthalmology and optometry, especially in relation to lens surgeries and intraocular lens design. Recently, IOL manufacturers have been manipulating spherical aberration as a tool to provide a greater range of vision, but rarely explaining the mechanism. Your OATR hosts, Dr Nick Andrew and Dr Ben LaHood, as always, discuss the simple things often overlooked and the complex things often ignored in the eye world. They take a deep dive into spherical aberration of the eye to provide you with a better understanding of an increasingly important topic for ophthalmologists and optometrists.

In the U.S., so-called "per se" antitrust crimes require nothing more than proof that the conduct occurred, relieving prosecutors of the difficult job of proving harm to competition. Is the Fourth Circuit's 2023 opinion in U.S. v. Brewbaker part of a growing judicial trend toward limiting the prosecution of per se cases? Ann O'Brien, the co-leader of Sheppard Mullin's Antitrust and Competition Practice Group, joins Alicia Downey and Brendan Coffman to talk about Brewbaker and its implications for applying the per se standard in criminal antitrust actions. Listen to this episode to hear about whether the rule of reason might be applied in the criminal context and the U.S. Department of Justice's possible responses to a changing legal landscape. [originally published on Patreon Sep 22, 2023] cw: rape, assault, etc. This is the first episode about the serial killer Israel Keyes. I begin with the logical starting place: the Keyes family, and get into a brief history of Christian Identity in the UK and US. From there, we discuss the Kehoe family including some interesting details which are often left out of the conversation. Then I go over Israel's early life and upbringing, his early military service, his first major relationship, and end discussing Israel's Grand Plan. (note 1: I wrote and recorded this before I had Wendy Painting on the show and consequently realized I kept saying 'Aberrations' instead of Aberration in the Heartland of the Real, the correct title note 2: I have learned much more about Fort Gulick since writing these episodes and I think Keyes was trained there) Songs: I Saw the Sign by Ace of Base Loco by Coal Chamber (when talking about psychiatric evaluation?) TRYNA SPIT GAME by STOVE X DJ AKOZA (outro)
REUPLOADED due to some technical capitalist issues.
This Ep is a banger! Enjoy!
