Joining Tom now is the Baltimore-based hip hop virtuoso, recording artist and activist Anthony Parker, better known as Wordsmith, the founder of the youth advocacy organization, Rise with a Purpose… Also with us in studio are Tajae Holloway and Dayana Punnett, two of the performers in The Purple Tape, a new musical written and produced by Wordsmith in collaboration with the Baltimore Rock Opera Society, that celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip hop. Set in Baltimore in the 90s, The Purple Tape's storyline incorporates classic period rap hits from Wu-Tang, The Notorious B.I.G., 2PAC and LL Cool J. The students of New Song Academy (where Wordsmith teaches) rap their way through a summer day as they embark on a hunt for a rare copy of the famous Raekwon album. Only 10,000 cassettes of that album were printed, guaranteeing it would be intensely coveted by devoted Raekwon/Wu-Tang fans. The search for "The Purple Tape" ends up being a lesson in hip hop history, as the students come to realize the culture of hip hop is a way of living. The Purple Tape is an exuberant, educational and family-friendly musical experience. (photo courtesy Wordsmith)Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx or The Purple Tape is the first album by the icon Raekwon the Chef. This album was the first solo album by Raekwon, it came after the first Wu-Tang group album and after two other members of the Wu put out solos. RZA the group producer would produce all four albums. Check out this episode about The Purple Tape and hear snippets of some of the tracks. Thank you Raekwon for everything you've given to the world and especially this classic work. Thank you, and thank you for listening to this episode of hip hop history. Thank you and have a great day.

The closest thing you're getting to the Purple Tape this decade, Vanderslice slides through the podcast to plug 'Enigma of Dalì,' which blends surrealist art vibes with raw street rap for one of the year's most immediately engaging releases. It wasn't an easy road to get here though and this 10,000 hour journey is filled with brushes with the law, death, health problems and even though obstacle after obstacle is thrown in his direction whats important is he has the drive and perseverance to overcome it all and remain true to Phoenixville and himself. With 'Enigma of Dalì,' we're seeing two like-minded artists push themselves even further as they embody the experimentalism of Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalì. Quite the concept indeed. Episode 9: "Purple Tape, Track 9": It was a long time coming with this episode!! Back in August of 1995, Chef Raekwon dropped arguably one of the greatest albums in hip hop history. And on that album was one of the most talked about skits ever! 3 The Hard Way invites you to look up what track 9 of that album was; as they give a wink to all the haters and biters in the industry. They get into creating something of value through creativity versus just throwing money at a venture, as well as two different approaches to business ingenuity. The guys also bring back their segment Billionaire Block Gem of the Week, highlighting a gem from one of the most notable businessmen in the country. Some people are gonna be salty after this one! But 3 The Hard Way invites hate!!
Raekwon the Chef is in the building! You know what that means? No punches pulled, no questions dodged. It's all kept 100, 100% of the time. When Rae sits down to talk with Talib Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh, there's no need for chit chat. The trio gets into the meaty convos right away -- from Wu family dynamics to the Supreme Alchemy of the 5% Nation to songwriting techniques to The Purple Tape. The convo is wide-ranging and avoids nothing. It's not just about “what” is discussed, though -- it's also “how.” Raekwon and Kweli respect one another as lyricists, road warriors, and rappers who have been in the game and are still thriving. That mutual respect leads to a level of honesty that's rare in celebrity interviews. You love the Wu-Tang? Get your ears on this one -- it's a classic.

The crew reviews Raekwon's pivotal 1995 debut album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... also more popularly known in hip-hop circles as "The Purple Tape" known for its distinctive color of the original cassette tape release. It was a project that innovated the Mafioso rap sub genre with tales of street life and crime enterprises crafted by superb rhyming, a flawless selection of beats and cast of guests which made it one of the best rap albums of the 1990s.Show NotesAlbumism-Raekwon's debut solo album "Only Built For Cuban Linx..." BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 032 !! Can’t front ya'll, this show was VERY tough to do on Sunday night, given the untimely passing of #SeanPrice @sean-p the day prior. We didn’t know this man well at all, but we were VERY fortunate and blessed to have sat down with #Ruck about a month ago for an interview session. It was everything you would expect and more - straight comedy, insightful and downright crazy when Sean started playing new joints from his upcoming projects over the phone. To think this interview will go down as one of his last, if not THE last public interview before his passing - it leaves us speechless, humbled and forever grateful. The guy didn’t know us from Adam, but he still took the time out to talk with us. We decided against a tribute mix this week, instead opting to play a bunch of Sean’s current joints along with the new new you expect every week - as Sean was always about moving the ball forward, reinventing & evolving. No interview this week, but we did include one of the more memorable moments from our interview with Sean at the end of this weeks mix. Go back and check out the full interview, it’s worth every second of your time. SUPPORT the fundraiser campaign for Sean RIGHT NOW @ crowdrise.com/seanp - he was a husband & father, and his family needs your support. We don’t care if it’s $2.00...throw something on it. At a minimum go cop an album or two for a man that gave so much to hip-hop. #RIPSEANPRICE // #download #stream #listen #enjoy // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on @soundcloud & @mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #underground #DJ #mix #interviews #podcast #ATL #BROWNSVILLE #BROOKYLN #WORLDWIDE Recorded live August 9, 2015 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on @soundcloud @mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks *Inst beds by EL RTNC "Sheet Music" - Gangrene (The Alchemist & Oh No) feat. Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #19 - Attack of Lisa Loeb This week we sit down with an artist who sat at #1 on the Billboard charts, went on to sign a major record deal, followed by a Grammy nomination - all of which stemmed from having her song on a movie soundtrack. That's right Lisa Loeb, seemed like the perfect guest to have on Attack of the Killer Soundtrack. So we talk with Lisa about just how her song ended up on the Reality Bites soundtrack and what it was like to have a #1 hit single before she even had a recording contract. And all the massive changes that kicked in so quickly. Plus putting a full album together after having such a successful single, as well as crossing over into acting in film... plus several other endeavors! She’s a busy woman these days, and we are glad to have her join us on this week’s episode. Plus Lisa gives us her Killer Five music picks from soundtracks over the years. And as we keep our eyes upon the dream and go for it, someone also mentions… Jan De Bont, Gabe Kaplan, New York City, Katniss Everdeen, Brown University, just getting busy, Ethan Hawke, drinking a lot of champagne and driving in limos, being independent, putting yourself into a different character, focusing more on visual, second guessing is a loser sport, One small step for man…, Ben Stiller, walking around with headshots, Elizabeth Mitchell, 80 messages on my machine, getting it out there “for real”, Danny Elfman, one step for… me, 52nd street, when you get inspiration from outside of yourself, it’s a really fun, interesting puzzle to put together, regular music cycles, illustrated books, Stewart Copeland, live theater and the Purple Tape. “...having music placed in soundtracks... that’s really one of the best ways to get an income from being a musician - and also one of the best ways to get your music heard.“ To keep up with Lisa, check in at: http://www.lisaloeb.com/
