Options for very low latency networking with Azure Edge Zones. It brings Azure's global network fabric into local metro area data centers, provided by Microsoft or with mobile carriers, and onto 5G and 4G LTE networks, so your processing power is local to your users. Edge Zones is a turnkey solution for running your own private mobile network with dedicated bandwidth managed by Azure. Join Matt McSpirit, Microsoft Azure’s Senior Product Manager, for an overview of Azure Edge Zones and the three main options available to you for very low latency networking: • Azure Edge Zones Allows you to deploy apps and services and your IoT device infrastructure to a Metro Azure Data Center, close to where your users are. In the same way you're used to pulling your apps and services to a region in Azure, you can now deploy them to available Azure Edge Zones. • Azure Edge Zones with Carrier You can deploy your apps and services to a Carrier Hosted Edge Zone. The goal of this approach is to ensure that as your code runs in Azure Edge Zones with Carriers, it's only a single hop from the mobile 5G or 4G network of your users. Because your apps and services can be deployed locally across the carriers edge network, they can remain close to the users and their devices at all times, greatly reducing app response times to deliver superior user experiences. • Azure Private Edge Zones Great if you want to connect to manage your IoT devices, or establish dedicated networking and compute scenarios like smart warehousing and more. With Azure Private Edge Zones, you can build and deploy your own Private Mobile Network. ► QUICK LINKS: 00:00 - Introduction 01:39 - Azure Edge Zones 02:08 - Azure Edge Zones with Carrier 03:43 - Azure Private Edge Zones 04:30 - Building block approach 06:14 - Attabotics: Real world example of Azure Private Edge Zones 07:00 - What role does 5G play? ► Link References: • To try out Azure Zones for yourself, sign up at https://aka.ms/EdgeZones. • Learn more about Edge Zones and see the current list of partners by visiting https://aka.ms/AboutAEZ. • Find latency solutions at https://aka.ms/LowLatencyComputing. in control of your own identity online. Owning your identity is more relevant than ever. In the digital environment, it’s hard to retain ownership of your identity once you’ve shared it. Every time you give away personal information in exchange for a service — like bank account numbers, proof of education, or even employment, it’s now in the custody of those different institutions. You no longer control the data associated with them, and you can’t take it back. Verifiable Credentials is one of the most exciting and transformative areas of innovation. Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized Identifiers help you share your verifiable credentials without giving up your privacy. No one company or institution can control or store your information centrally— you can revoke your verifiable credentials at any time. Joy Chik, Microsoft’s Identity CVP, joins Jeremy Chapman to show you how it works and gives you the key steps to get up and running. ► QUICK LINKS: 00:00 - Introduction 00:07 - New solution: Verifiable Credentials 01:39 - What is it, and how do things change? 02:16 - See how it all works 06:29 - Blockchain-based 08:04 - Get it up and running 13:26 - Where else are Verifiable Credentials applied? 14:08 - Links to learn more ► Link References: To learn more and get all of the tutorials, go to https://aka.ms/DIDForDevs. Download the Verifiable Credentials SDK and create your own DID at https://aka.ms/VCSDK. The latest updates for endpoint and app management, to enable secure remote work experiences from wherever your users are. Due to the pandemic, “work from everywhere” is the new normal. Common tasks like hardware procurement and provisioning, and help desk are radically different when users and IT teams aren’t coming into the office. People have quickly realized not all of their hardware is up to the task of enabling work from everywhere. Brad Anderson, Microsoft 365 CVP, joins host Jeremy Chapman to walk through the latest updates. ► Windows Autopilot: Dropship devices directly to your users – whether that is a work or home address. We recently added support for co-management to Autopilot. Apps you’ve been managing from Configuration Manager can now easily be deployed as part of the Autopilot process. ► Tenant attach: You get a unified list of devices and don’t need to choose between one tool or the other. This is a huge update and simplification on enabling customers to attach the Microsoft 365 Cloud to their ConfigMgr deployment. ► ADMX Templates: We keep these up-to-date with not only the latest Windows policies, but all of the policy settings you need to manage Microsoft 365, the Edge browser, Office 2016 – which manages everything Office 2016 and newer, as well as your Office 365 apps and OneDrive policies. In our last conversation, we talked about the "what" of Imposter Syndrome, and this episode we're talking about the "how" of it. The Impostor experience is a real thing. It's a "fancy" way to say we have persistent self-doubt and don't feel like we belong. Recognizing the problem and having support from others are two big steps in dealing with Imposter Syndrome. Find out how GE Aviation has implemented Azure's Custom Vision to improve the variety and accuracy of document searches through OCR. See the steps they are taking to modernize their on-premises records management system as they move to Azure, and how they are making it easier for their airline customers to respond to new requirements and regulations. Jeremy Chapman joins Nate Hicks, Senior Product Manager for GE Aviation's Digital Group, to discuss how they are taking advantage of Azure Optical Character Recognition (OCR), a part of the Azure Custom Vision. Airlines are under increased pressure to show they can safely host passengers. Whether that's checking the air filtration system on planes due to public health requirements with COVID-19, or meeting industry standard general maintenance requirements — being able to keep good records is essential. Much of what gets archived is still paper-based, and these documents can contain both handwriting as well as printed text. Being able to convert documents that are in paper format to digital format, as well as process and store any documents that were never printed in the first place, is more important than ever. One of the main challenges with Alexa Skills is discoverability. How do you find them? Marketers and business owners are constantly telling me - "hey Paul, all this Alexa Skill stuff is cool and everything, but how do I let people know about it? Does our business have to promote it in order to gain users?" My answer is always, unequivocally YES, you have to promote your Alexa Skills in order to drive user adoption. I've blogged and vlogged at length about how businesses can benefit from Alexa Skills, and Amazon continues to roll out solutions for not only Voice App developers, but also marketers and business owners. The latest was announced at the end of July, 2020, at Alexa Live, and it's called Quick Links. As explained in this video/audio, Quick Links are a way to embed a link to your Alexa Skill in your website, email marketing blasts, social media posts and more, that allows a user to click a button to either launch an Alexa Skill immediately on one of their devices, or send their device a reminder for later to launch a skill. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support

In this episode, Teri welcomes Dr. Steven Arkonovich, a professor of philosophy at Reed College by day and a leading Alexa skill developer by night.Welcome, Dr. Arkonovich!Dr. Arkonovich began developing Alexa skills in 2015 before the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) SDK was even released and is best known for having the top-rated Alexa skill for weather. Big Sky has over 2,500 reviews and a 4.5-star rating. That puts Big Sky in the top 20 for skill reviews overall and number one in the weather category. He comes on to talk about his experience in creating skills for Alexa and Bixby, and his award winning skill, Big Sky.Philosophy Professor to Voice Technology EnthusiastA combination of trying to put off doing a research project and an Achilles tendon injury is what ultimately led him into developing an interest in voice technology, He was confined to a chair for a long time and so he was looking for things to do.He got an Alexa device early on and he liked the technology. He kept hacking around with it to have it do things that it wasn’t capable of doing at the time, like play music on his stereo or turn his lights on and off.Coding ExperienceHe hadn’t done any coding before he got into Alexa skill development. The fact that critical aspects of philosophy and coding are similar helped him in his start as a skill developer. He wanted to integrate Alexa into his music server software so he could tell Alexa to play his preferred songs or albums. That was when he was referred to an actual Alexa skill developer who was doing some early Alexa projects. The developer wrote some basic code for him, but it had some issues and he decided to fix them himself. That’s how he started self-teaching himself the necessary coding to do to the skill development. His First SkillsIt was a lights integration skill which included color loops and timers, features that are not yet available in any Alexa skill or device. He would use it to control his lights. He also developed skills for Evernote integration, Google Calendar integrations, and other things. The Google Calendar integration skill is actually still available in the skill store.Big SkyThis is his flagship skill and it’s all about the weather. He created it to give him much more detailed and obscure weather information that at the time Alexa didn’t provide. Amazon has since upped their game in that regard. He didn’t think much about it when he published it, but then over a period of six months, people started using it and it became very popular.Facing Skill ImitationsHe has unique features in his skill (Big Sky), but he has witnessed some concerning issues with Amazon copying some of his features into their own weather skill.Asking for the weather from Big Sky or Alexa is similar in certain ways, but Big Sky is much more detailed in the forecasts it provides. It, for example, analyses the weather behind the scenes to find interesting patterns like whether the chance of rain is increasing or decreasing. The data it provides comes from the Dark Sky API.Takeaways From Alexa LiveHe loved the event and the features Amazon released. He thinks the Quick Links feature is going to be beneficial for all users including Alexa skill developers. The NFI tool kit will also be great for developers and users depending on how it will be implemented.Other features that he liked included Alexa Conversations (which was integrated into Big Sky).List of resources mentioned in this episodeDr. Steven Arkonovich on TwitterBig SkyThe Comprehensive Flash Briefing Formula CourseThe Voice DenOther useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
