Secure remote file access without OneDrive or VPNs? Richard chats with Ned Pyle about the power of SMB over QUIC. Ned talks about the ongoing battle to put older versions of SMB to bed and how QUIC is becoming the de facto standard for moving files around, both within the network and across the internet. While a lot of business files can be served effectively from OneDrive for Business, often, you have applications and infrastructure that depend on UNCs and other file mapping approaches. SMB for QUIC through Azure VMs and Azure Stack HCI allows the same UNC paths to work securely inside and outside your office network. Why do you need Azure Stack? Richard chats with Sarah Lean about the capabilities Azure Stack HCI brings to your organization. Sarah describes the three flavors of Azure Stack, including Hub, Edge, and HCI - short for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure. While all the options act like a part of Azure, they are optimized for different needs, but primarily focus on putting Azure-style compute closer to where you need it, perhaps as part of a machine learning solution, IoT, and so on. Azure Arc plays a role in giving you a broad view of your cloud assets, Stack assets, and regular on-premises resources also!Links:Azure Stack HCIAzure ArcAzure Stack HCI Pro 2FastTrack for AzureRecorded October 24, 2022

Windows Admin Center in Azure? Richard talks to Prasidh Arora about the preview of WAC in Azure - giving admins that familiar Windows Admin Center view of Azure Virtual Machines running Windows Server 2016 or later. Prasidh talks about creating a unified view and admin access to your servers, whether they are running on-premises, in Azure, or even on other cloud infrastructures. Installing Azure Arc on a server makes it available from WAC in Azure. The conversation also digs into the privileges challenges - making sure you have rights on the server for WAC's different capabilities. But with WAC for Azure, we're one step closer to a unified view and control of infrastructure.
We've got Microsoft MVP Eric Siron for a conversation about the end of Hyper-V Server (the free SKU of Hyper-V). Again, to confirm, we're talking about the free SKU of Hyper-V. The normal paid SKUs - the well-known role within Windows Server - will be remaining. This announcement came abruptly and was something of a shock to many people. Hyper-V server was the primary test/dev hypervisor for many organizations, not to mention it was great for licensing in VDI scenarios. News of its untimely demise has created some angst in the community. Many IT Pros see this move by Microsoft as a way to takeaway a great free tool and use the situation to start pushing Azure Stack HCI, which many organizations are not ready to adopt at this time. The good news is that Hyper-V Server 2019 is going to continue to be supported until its extended support lifecycle runs out in 2029. This means that many organizations will have plenty of time to migrate to an alternative. What do you think? Is this change going to be impactful for you? Let us know! We talk Hybrid Cloud Management via Azure Arc with Thomas Maurer from the Azure Advocacy team at Microsoft! This episode features a lot of discussion around Microsoft's hybrid cloud strategy, planning, and management with Azure Arc. Azure Arc brings together management of different clouds into the same UI. You can even setup your on-prem Azure Stack HCI deployments as “Custom Locations” inside of Arc so they appear as sites within the Azure control plane. This management story is becoming critically important. Many IT Pros see Hybrid Cloud as a destination and not a temporary state. The need for these kinds of management tools is only going to grow. With that said, Andy and Thomas spend a good chunk of the episode talking about Hybrid cloud deployments, technologies, and where Azure Arc fits into it all! We hope you enjoy! Carsten Rachfahl and Andy Syrewicze hosted a webinar focused on Azure Stack HCI and Hybrid Cloud. The webinar covered several aspects regarding Azure Stack HCI, including: What is Azure Stack HCI? Installation Networking and Storage Considerations Example Use-Cases for Azure Stack HCI And more! The other thing the guys discussed was some of the findings from our recent survey on hybrid cloud technologies and adoption. One of the most interesting aspects was the fact that most IT Pros see hybrid cloud as a permanent destination and not necessarily a temporary state. This showed in the amount of questions that were asked during the webinar as well! In fact, we had so many questions that Andy and Carsten wanted to use this podcast to expand on some of the most interesting questions from the webinar! When we sat down to record this episode we ended up in a situation like we did with our episode with Ben Armstrong, too much content for one episode! To those familiar with Hyper-V, this likely doesn't come as a surprise being we're discussing the various management tools that are available for Hyper-V, along with the overall management story for Microsoft's hypervisor. In this episode, we sit down with Eric Siron to discuss modern day usage of the traditional Hyper-V management tools which include: Hyper-V Manager Failover Cluster Manager PowerShell System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) In the next episode, we'll focus on the new management tools for Hyper-V such as Windows Admin Center and Azure Arc. Welcome back to another episode of Lisa at the Edge. In this episode I am joined by my teammate Jaromir Kaspar. Jaromir walks us through his career in tech journey, spoiler alert, he knew he wanted to be in tech from the age of 6. Jaromir worked for Microsoft where he travelled the world as a Customer Engineer. He also created MSLab on GitHub. MSLab enables you to deploy and test Windows Server and Azure Stack HCI scenarios quickly and repeatably for testing, learning or deploying.
This podcast with Ben Armstrong from Microsoft is part two of our interview with him. In the first podcast with Ben we discussed all things Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) running on Azure Stack HCI. Those that are familiar with Ben though know that he's often closely associated with the development of Hyper-V, and we figured we'd be doing our listeners a disservice by not asking Ben some questions about what's new in Hyper-V! We talk about some of the new features that Ben feels are most impactful and useful for IT Pros. More importantly, Andy and Ben spend some time talking about the recent Microsoft decision to discontinue future releases of the free Hyper-V Server SKU of Windows Server. For those not aware, Hyper-V Server is/was a free version of Windows Server that contained only the roles and features needed to run virtual machines. It came with no licensing and was often used to run open-source workloads on top of Hyper-V. Ben gives us the behind-the-scenes info that led to the decision to stop releasing future versions of this free SKU. As Ben says, for those people that want to continue using Hyper-V Server, please keep sending in feedback. The feedback is heard. We sit down with Ben Armstrong from Microsoft to talk about Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) on Azure Stack HCI! Being a Group Program Manager for AKS on premises, Ben spends his time making life easier for infrastructure administrators running compute workloads on premises. In previous roles for Ben, this meant VMs, but now his focus is on Containers and Kubernetes! In this episode we cover what AKS is, why it's important for IT Pros, adoption outlook and more! Also worth mentioning is that we changed things up with this episode. The conversation with Ben was so engaging that we've split this episode into a two-part episode, with this one focusing on the AKS discussion. Part two will focus on Hyper-V, including some behind the scenes information on Microsoft's decision to stop development of the free Hyper-V Server SKU. So, keep a look out for part two next week! Welcome back to Lisa at the Edge. After a break I am easing back in slowly to the world of social media and kicking off the podcast again. I'm definitely a little rusty and I think it shows in this episode but hopefully I'll be back to myself after a few more episodes. In this episode I am joined by some of my team mates to discuss the Azure Stack HCI and Azure Arc announcements from Microsoft Ignite November 2021. I was in Paris during Ignite so missed the live content but I have been catching up via the blogs and video content and my team mates were on hand to bring me up to speed.

Welcome to Episode 25 and the last episode of 2020 - can you believe it? In this episode I am joined by an awesome friend and colleague Mike Lamia. Mike shares with us his career story. A born technologist there is nothing else that Mike could imagine himself doing. Although one role and terribly managed server room almost made him consider it. But VMware and virtualisation saved the day and he stayed with the industry. Mike now works in Technical Marketing at Dell Technologies focused on Azure Stack products and loves to 'make tech real' for our customers. We also discuss setting some goals for 2021 and I get a special commitment from Mike! Have you thought about your 2021 goals yet? Let us know in the comments below! Linda Rendleman - Vice President, Microsoft North American Device Partner Solution Sales Welcome to the 78th episode of the Ultimate Guide to Partnering™. For this episode, I was delighted to welcome a friend and former colleague, Linda Rendleman. I met Linda many years ago when we both worked at Microsoft, and her career as a woman in technology has blossomed over the last few years. Linda Rendleman has served as Vice President, North American Device Partner Solution Sales at Microsoft since August 2020. In her role, she leads the strategy, relationships, and business operations of the company's device solutions and partnerships to support building devices that consume our cloud, innovating with device partners, and transforming how we sell devices and services with partners. Linda focuses on helping channel partners capture more opportunities by rethinking how work is done and leverages aggregated solutions to increase business agility, work productivity, and operational efficiencies. I was excited to feature Linda to discuss her award-winning career as a woman in technology, her new role, her team's priorities and how the market is thinking differently now about devices. DEVICES ARE THE GATEWAY TO THE CLOUD With so many of us working from home with the pandemic, using a first-class, modern computing device is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Selecting devices with excellent audio, video, and computing is essential. Linda's team works with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to design and build devices that best utilize the cloud with next-gen delivery models to transform the Modern Workplace. Her Team's Priorities: Champion the value of a modern device, both in commercial consumer and education channels - why a modern device is essential.Attaching client office and server perpetual licensing to those devices for businesses that aren't yet ready for the cloud.Closely align with OCP (One Commercial Partner) counterparts to support our partners in their Microsoft CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) attach motions.Transformational initiatives around selling the Commercial Intelligent Edge, including Azure Stack HCI offers, DaaS, Autopilot, and Microsoft Teams Rooms. TEAM LEADERSHIP AT MICROSOFT & PARTNERSHIPS As this is the year of the essential worker, and the device is the essential worker. Linda has a unique perspective on the Device Business as she held leadership roles as a Senior VP at a top partner and now as a VP at Microsoft. In this tough year, I wanted to ask her how she is coaching her team and supporting her top partnerships. Her Team? - performing and transforming is hard. Set boundaries to ensure you are working on your plan versus the plan work you. What Keeps Here Up at Night? - The care, concern, and support for her team and her partners during this challenging year.Attributes of Great Partnership? - Listen, have courage, take action when needed, take a step back when needed, really be invested—having a Growth Mindset, Empathy, and Trust. When Partnerships Failed - listen, open to giving and receiving advice, not seeking to understand, to get them on the path to success. HOW SHE GOT TO THIS SPOT IN HER JOURNEY Linda and I discuss her career journey and her path to a Vice President at Microsoft. Here are some key takeaways: Self-improvement - focusing on health, educating herself on food, exercise, and well-being has improved her performance. Her Metamorphosis - after a dark period in her life, she regrouped and propelled her journey. It's okay to take a step sideways or back on your journey."Imposter Syndrome" - how shifting her mindset, being authentic, having an abundance mindset, and focusing on helping others - made all the difference. Her Focus Today - "being present" and "unexpected blessings"- it's hard to be stuck in a bad place when you are fully engaged and feeling grateful. If you are a business leader, partner leader,
How to enable seamless management across your hybrid and multi-cloud environments, and tap into Azure services locally, by taking advantage of the latest updates to Azure Arc and the newly refactored Azure Stack HCI. This week I have been off work, and although I haven't went away anywhere on vacation I've been taking the time to explore a bit of Scotland and disconnect from social media and work. So it feels very wierd to be checking in on what has been happening with Azure news this week, but here goes.
At Microsoft Inspire in July there were some pretty big announcements regarding Azure Stack HCI. This resulted in a lot of excitement and a lot of questions. To help get some of those questions answered I pulled together some experts from the community and Microsoft to discuss the announcements and answer your questions. From Microsoft I am joined by Darren Small, John Marlin and Thomas Maurer and we also have MVPs Kenny Low and Jan-Tore Pedersen. I will publish a blog in the next week or so with a summary of our conversation and all of the questions and answers. In the mean time I have included some important links below so check them out! @JohnMarlin_MSFT @DarrenMsft @ThomasMaurer @Jantorep @KennyLowe For asking questions or reporting issues, you should go to https://aka.ms/hci-qa. Think of this as the old MSDN forums. When you ask a question, please ensure “azure-stack-hci” is the tag as this is what the Microsoft Product Group is searching on. For suggesting new features or improvements, you can go to https://aka.ms/hci-uservoice. For more information about Azure Stack HCI, you can visit our Azure Stack HCI page (https://azure.com/hci) or read through the various documentation (planning, deploying, etc) that is available at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/?branch=release-hci. For the support billing options and pricing, you should be able to get it at https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/support/plans/. The Premier/Unified Support option is not listed as this is not a specific Azure support offering, however, it does cover Azure Stack HCI. For opening up a support ticket, you can either call in or use the open a ticket through Azure.

Shekhar Mishra, Director of Product Marketing for Software Defined Data Center at Lenovo, joins us to discuss trends in software-defined storage. Shekhar supports Intel® Select Solutions because pre-validation gives customers confidence that they are using the right recipe for their business needs - especially for customers adopting new technologies. Combining Intel’s validation with Lenovo’s testing, as well as Microsoft’s certification, reduces risk and creates configurations that are optimized for high-priority workloads. Lenovo’s latest Azure Stack HCI solution is a result of collaboration between all three companies and is designed to simplify deployment by taking the guesswork out of system configuration. In this episode myself and Kenny Lowe Senior Engineering Technologist at Dell Tech and Azure MVP are lucky to be joined by Jeff Woolsey Principal Program Manager at Microsoft looking after Azure Stack HCI, Windows Server and all things Hybrid cloud. This episode is the result of a threadzilla on Twitter where there was a hot debate on Azure Stach HCI's naming convention. Is it just a marketing ploy? Does it mean something more? Is it a sign of things to come? So of course I address this topic with Jeff. We also discuss Azure Arc, Windows Admin Centre and Azure portal and the use cases for each. We go in to a bit more depth on Azure Stack HCI use cases and we get a cheeky glimpse of what is to come for Azure Stack HCI! I look forward to having Jeff back on Lisa at The Edge when he can talk more about future announcements. You can find Jeff on Twitter at @WSV_GUY
