Jennefer Pursifull is the VP of Marketing and Sales at Medxcel, where she believes in the importance of collaboration. At Medxcel, Marketing and HR join forces to increase overall engagement of both clients and employees. She knows when you have employees who are proud of the company, telling their stories is the best way to spread a company’s brand. In this episode, you’ll learn how she builds brand ambassadors by equipping people to tell their stories . Truth You Can Act On 1. Align Marketing and HR Supporting Quote Jennefer Pursifull: “We have a research side of our marketing group, and they really do the customer relationship survey. They oversee our service, transactional surveys on customer satisfaction, and then they do this piece of associate engagement research. And in the last year we have developed an associate index that we combined with our relationship and service, transactional service strategy to create a health index for our remote sites. Our associates do their job out in hospitals and healthcare locations, and so they're dispersed across the country. And one of the things that our HR team really struggled with was understanding the environment within each one of those sites. We now have this index, and we come together with HR, and we look at the index, how the site is doing. We look at the data within that site, and then HR really focuses on kind of the HR basics--the training and leadership development skills, understanding what needs to be supported from technical education and leadership education--and our team looks at what are those drivers of engagement and how do we support the connections between the leaders? And what's around the pieces that will make the greatest impact on how our associates build pride and build their confidence and their support of the organization?” 2. Do Research First Supporting Quote Jennefer Pursifull: “I think anytime you start something new, you really need to start with the data. And that's what we did. We started with the research on our customer side, then we added the research on understanding our associates engagement level, and then we use the analytics it takes to bring those two together. So start with the data. Once you have the data that will guide you, watch what your next steps are. Where do you need to focus to build your associate engagement levels? And that's just working on the assumption that the associates engagement level, as it goes up, move towards a brand ambassador position. And we have absolutely seen that result once that associate engagement level is high and your associates are just naturally telling the story of your organization and how they fit and work within this organization.” 3. Equip Employees to Be Brand Ambassadors Supporting Quote Jennefer Pursifull: “There are a lot of internal ways that we tell those stories, and as you tell them, you actually encourage people to share their stories. But then our brand team very much uses these stories externally, and we use them in social media. We use them in identifying sometimes a story that will turn into an actual case study in one of our accounts where we can focus on a successful service delivery partnership with a customer. Todd Richardson is the CEO of EDGE Mentoring, a non-profit organization connecting generations in meaningful mentoring relationships. In this episode, Todd and Nikki discuss the importance of developing the whole person–the professional, personal, and spiritual self–and the tremendous impact it has on engagement. Truth You Can Act On 1. Spend half your one-on-one meetings having real conversations about the person’s well-being. [00:07:43]I had a colleague, dear, dear friend, um, Les Gleaves, who was a lifelong professional development guru. And whenever. We would meet, he would take a deep breath before saying his first word and ask, how are you? And he asked it in a way required more than a one word answer. You know, I asked my kids every day when they come home from school, how was school? And the reality is. It's more out of repetition and more out of kind of requirement and routine where I say, you know, have a school, I am expecting a good answer.[00:08:42] 2. Personally check in with your people frequently–at least every other day. [17:37] I try to make it a point to reach out to each of my employees, at least every other day in daily. I can. And it doesn't have to be anything more than a Hey, checking in on you. Hope all is well today. Let me know if I can be of assistance, but I think what happens is we all escape too. You know, the dark corners of our houses and apartments and condos, and it's easy to get isolated into like your on an Island. [18:09] 3. Create space for employees to connect with each other. [19:39] as leaders, one thing that we can really push on is create the space and the opportunity for employees to devise and come up with affinity groups that are important to them, and then allow them to play leadership roles. It allows them to. Show up to the office show up to the, you know, whether it's live or, and to be able to ring others in the workplace together around topics that are important to them. Truth You Can Act On: In order to make the best decisions on the HOW and WHAT you will do to move the needle on employee engagement, create a vivid vision of WHO you want to be. [00:15:32] Take the time and invest the resources to work on who you want to be. What's your mission, what's your purpose? What's your vision? And not only develop the strategies for how you're going to achieve that vision–the what you're going to do– but also the how you're going to do it. [00:15:48] Make feedback a simple habit versus a check the box. Find opportunities to give the feedback right away and tie in how you felt and why it’s important. [00:11:05] if you get into the habit of doing this and especially if leaders can get into the habit of accepting feedback from others, that becomes safer for people to sort of do it on a more regular basis. [00:11:15] Slow down. Human-first means building relationships and slowing down to truly connect. Be self-aware of what you know you can do better and be intentional to do it. [00:08:03] You start off by making this human connection because once you do that, everything else will flow easier. So you slowed down a little but you sped up. Truth You Can Act On: Own your fears and deficits – we all have them. Know what they are and embrace them, and go at your own pace to work through them. Ask your people for feedback. Truth You Can Act On: Know people’s motivation: We can't treat all of our people the same. Everyone's motivated in different ways and we have to know what's there why. We have to spend time listening and understanding how your employees are motivated. Employees first: Customer service should be a top priority but it can’t take precedence over your employees. When you help your employees win they’ll walk through fire for you and your customers. Build on their strengths: Always look for the good in people and acknowledge what they’re doing well. You can build loyalty by leading with positivity. When we have a strong relationship with people they stop expecting you to be perfect and start focusing on how they can help bring the company’s vision to life. Truth You Can Act On: Relationship skills are essential skills. They’re not optional and they’re not “soft” skills Make sure your mindset is locked-in to the endgame. This helps us fast track and innovate faster and helps our people feel safe. Deliberately recruit diversity and on-board uniquely. Stop cloning. Every human needs a unique experience to help them unlock their potential. Walk the talk. Truth You Can Act On: Teams need safety and trust to truly enable and empower people to speak up. Inspire curiosity of your team members and be a curious leader. Consider different perspectives and embrace diversity. Have a mindset that embraces conflict. Challenge yourself: do you really believe it’s a powerful thing to fail forward? Have a framework for feedback. Give feedback on behaviors coming from a place of care inspiring change. Truth You Can Act On: Mentoring is a mindset. In order for us to deploy an effective mentoring program, we must be intentional about developing mentors inside of our organization and at the same time making mentoring relationships a norm. The core of a mentoring relationship is trust. What are you doing to equip your people with trust-building exercises and giving them a platform and tools to do this consistently? Relationship building is an essential skill. Are you teaching and encouraging it in your company? All mentor-mentee relationships need goals. Start with the end in mind knowing what you're working to accomplish both on the mentor and mentee side. Many times where mentoring relationships break down is just their way too gray. So stay on track, stay focused and keep your eye on the prize. Truth You Can Act On: Start with the end in mind: Define the problem or goal you want to solve then start building the gamification technique. Make the mundane fun: Gamification is a great way to do this but most important is to make life at work fun. Ensure key stakeholders are involved at all levels: Everyone in the organization needs to know the Why, why they’re doing it and how it helps them. Be careful on competition: Don’t let it get too far or it could become unhealthy. Truth You Can Act On: Set expectations with employees. When setting expectations, there’s a big difference between being “kind of clear” and being “very clear”. Employees want to know what’s expected of them. They want to know what it means to be successful, and they want to know when they’re falling short. Don’t let them down. Be crystal clear with your expectations—showing them exactly where the bar is set. Care about employees as people. Be intentional about getting to know your people. Learn about their interests, their family, their dreams, and their fears. Be genuine. When you’re employees feel like you care about them beyond the scope of their job, that’s when real engagement begins. Lead with self-awareness. Develop an awareness of your gifts as well as your shortcomings. Show a desire and willingness to continue learning and growing. Don’t pretend to be perfect (you won’t fool anyone). Instead, be real. Be vulnerable. Doing so will foster intimacy with your team—the foundation for long-lasting engagement. Nikki Lewallen fosters connections and promotes networking as CEO of Rainmakers, an Indianapolis firm she joined in 2007 that builds bridges within Indiana’s business community. She also shares her expertise on the Gut + Science podcast that started in April this year. ----- Do you know someone who lives for the weekend and hates the thought of Mondays? If so, learn how Nikki Lewallen inspires people to live life for Mondays. She enjoys connecting people and enhancing corporate culture by helping others appreciate their contributions as valued members of their companies. In this episode, Nikki encourages managers and leadership to discover what motivates staff and how we can inspire them to find deeper meaning in their work. This motivational speaker and philanthropist shares her passion for putting systems in place that allow us to gain valuable feedback. She encourages the use of an assessment tool managed by a third party to encourage higher participation and honest responses. When we solicit feedback from employees, we must act upon it rather than file it away. We need to do this regularly, perhaps once each quarter. If we plan to inspire action and enhance our corporate culture, we need to reassure those willing to share their opinions that they will be valued, disclosed in a way that assures confidentiality, and will lead to change. We must do more than go through the motions. Nikki encourages intentional acts of kindness and discusses the value of seeking mentors.
