The absurdist dark comedy is a crowd favourite and the winner of the Adelaide Fringe 2023 Critics' Circle Award. However, its carefree gags have ruffled many feathers in politically correct circles, so much so that one activist asked that the public boycott the show or demand refunds for tickets already purchased. This week's guest is the wonderful and inspiring Katherine Wolfgramme. Katherine is a well-respected and prominent transgender woman. She's a multi award-winning, internationally recognised transgender advocate and gender diversity educator. Katherine is currently on the board of Qtopia, Sydney's Pride Museum, she's a Sydney World Pride Rainbow Champion, and a really loved member of Sydney's Gay Community. Katherine transitioned over 30 years ago in Melbourne and throughout her life has been a trans child, trans youth, trans adult and now trans elder. She has a goal to broaden awareness through her training programs and a vision to reduce transphobia towards all transgender people and turn fear into understanding.  In this episode, we hear Katherine's truly remarkable story. She shares what it was like growing up in Australia in the 1970s as a child born with gender dysphoria (and she helps explain what that is). She tells us what it was like to be born in a body that was biologically male, but with a brain that felt she was female. Katherine talks about transgender issues and her personal experiences in a way that opens our eyes and hearts to what transgender people go through and truly creates understanding.  Katherine opens up about the discrimination and bullying she's experienced throughout her life, not only as a transgender woman, but also as a woman of colour. Born in Fiji, Katherine unfortunately had to deal with racism when she moved to Australia. But as well as the hard times, we hear about the beautiful and uplifting moments in her life - the life-changing dream she had as a teenager when she was at rock bottom, how incredible she felt when she first started taking hormones, and the progress we've made as a society that means that transgender youth can live with more freedom and acceptance today.  Katherine is such a great storyteller and we loved hearing about the highs and lows of her life and the strength she's shown to cope with it all, rise above it and become a role model for so many. We also hear a sneak preview of Katherine's upcoming show in the Sydney Fringe Festival, SHE: The Extraordinary Journey of an Ordinary Transgender Woman. The show is running from the 5th-8th of September in Sydney and has just been selected as one of the Fringe's picks, so make sure you grab your tickets below. Over the past 30 years he has been involved in theatre works, production and performance at Mardi Gras, in fashion parades, film, and dance variety at Belvoir St Theatre. Tobin is now working solo with the Vanessa Wagner character and is also freelancing as an actor. He appears on TV as a social commentator and contemporary icon. His eclectic experience and skills have enabled Tobin to produce work that is fresh, challenging and innovative. Avoiding the labels of “Dance”, “Theatre” or “Comedy”, he combines all into a vibrant hybrid. Vanessa Wagner is one of Australia's most colourful and entertaining identities. She started as a dedicated housewife and part time hostess. Vanessa was crowned Sydney Mardi Gras Miss Fair Day 1993 and for seven years she coordinated and hosted the spectacularly successful Drag Race Meet at Bondi Beach for the Sydney Fringe Festival. From early 1993 till 1996 Vanessa captivated audiences with ‘Jamie and Vanessa' parties and stage shows. Vanessa now produces her own parties, events and shows. She is proud dance mistress of her very own Crystal Stepz Dance Company, creating works of a kind rarely seen! Her sell out hit dance show, Vanessa Wagner's History of Dance broke box office records during its premiere season. She Co-hosted the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade telecasts on Channel Ten for 5 years. She also had a regular appearance as talk back host, on national youth radio station Triple J. Vanessa's intelligent, opinionated and funny repartee is a sure crowd pleaser. She was the most colourful and loved entrant in Celebrity Big Brother, has made Australia laugh featuring in a saucy Snickers TV commercial and keeps Australia laughing with TV and Cable appearances. As a tireless advocate for HIV health education and safe practice, Tobin's work has had far reach in many communities. In July 2022, Academic Daniel Reeders commented - “Tobin's ground-breaking work as Vanessa Wagner with Kath Albury as Nurse Nancy was a key inspiration for Michael Hurley's theory of cultures of care that has had a sustained and powerful influence on HIV health promotion practice in Australia. Vanessa and Nancy used glamour and humour to bring audiences on a journey through sensitive topics like having a positive sex life and managing complicated medication regimes in the emerging era of antiretroviral treatments.” With a myriad of corporate speaking & charity works across Australia, Vanessa has proved her flexibility and has cemented her position as a loveable Australian icon. Ally's show Not Today arrived at the 2022 Sydney Fringe Festival to stellar reviews and nominations and now we get all the behind the scenes stories on how it came to be. Ally sits down in our powerhouse museum studio to discuss climate change activism, how lockdown forced her to be creative and how this eventually led to her writing her own one woman show. We also have the return of our new favourite game, One Minute Theatre Thoughts and Ally also performs one of her songs from Not Today just for the podcast! This episode was produced by Echidna Audio (@echidnaaudio) and organised in coordination with Rogue Projects (@rogueprojects). Not Today It's the one-woman cabaret that was meant to save the world from climate change. It won't, but it just might save us from ourselves. 26-year-old Ally Morgan is determined to save the world from climate change. How does she plan to do it? Through the power of THEATRE! Nobody ever remembers women writers - but playwright Jo Kadlecek wants to change that.  --- “In Parker’s case, I think creativity was a burden. I genuinely think she didn’t know what to do with it. She had these great outlets - helping start The New Yorker magazine, writing for Vanity Fair and for Vogue, writing poetry, being a theatre critic - but nothing fed her soul. It was a sad existence. She attempted suicide three or four times, and wrote a poem on suicide, and said it at a party with F. Scott Fitzgerald! What a conversation killer - no pun intended.”  A play that debuted at the 2019 Sydney Fringe Festival brought together three women who led strangely parallel lives, but (probably) never met: Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Parker, and Dorothy Day. These remarkable women all wrote and worked from the 1920s on - but are largely and unjustly forgotten, says Jo Kadlecek, the woman behind the play Speak … Easy.  “That’s a line from the play: nobody ever remembers women writers." Jo has been a novelist, journalist, and teacher (among other things!) and she’s been trying to get the Dorothys in the same room for the last fifteen years. One of the first women to graduate from Oxford, the first woman to write for the New Yorker, and a firebrand socialist who’s now up for sainthood in the Catholic Church … there is nothing about these women that’s not fascinating.  In this episode of Life & Faith, Jo talks writing, motherhood, whiskey, falling in love, and being a woman of your time (or not), through the lens of the three Dorothys.  --- To find out more about Joining the Dots Theatre - which aims to combine the wit of Dorothy Parker, the theological depth of Dorothy L. Sayers, and Dorothy Day’s passionate compassion for those in need - visit www.joiningthedotstheatre.com.au Find out more about Dorothy L. Or ending up in the Sydney Morning Herald as the lone voice at the time from the legal profession who spoke up about his own drug taking and his legal perspective on the need for reform with our drug laws.Miles has a lot to say and has the courage to make a stand for what he believes in.You can find Miles here: http://therenegade.com.au/Or get a copy of his novel, The Unfortunate Death of James Douglas O’Flaherty, here: https://jdof.com.au/Also, a shout out to my pod-friend from the USA, Marita and her amazing Turning Point Podcast, which has helped me a lot recently in my own life as I've introduced a large dose of change. Who do you look up to or learn from? For Thoughts That Count we talked pros and cons of Father's Day and all kinds of families/relationships, featuring an analysis of some problematic Kanye West lyrics about being a father and what that means to him.  We were also joined by filmmaker, producer and actor Vonne Patiag, who works across stage, screen and performance to focus on issues exploring queer and ethnic intersection in Australia. Vonne has co-written a queer sitcom called Obviously! That opens as part of Sydney Fringe Festival next Thursday night, he’s also recently created a short documentary calledShading, examining current practices of ‘white-washing’ ethnic skin tones of performers in the film and theatre industries. Plus, we spoke to Sarinah Masukor and Jaya Keaney about The Watermelon Woman, a film that stars Cheryl Dunye as a movie-obsessed young queer woman working in a Philadelphia video store. She’s drawn to films from the 1930s which feature anonymous black women and decides to make a documentary about actress Fae Richards, known as ‘the Watermelon Woman’. Sarinah from Runway Australian Experimental Art has been working with Jaya Keaney to feature Jaya’s written response to the film, and Runway are hosting a screening happening at Golden Age Cinema and Bar on Wednesday September 12.

My guest this week is designer, artist and pop-phenomenon Stavroula Adameitis - though you may know her by her pop art moniker, Frida Las Vegas (www.instagram.com/fridalasvegas). I have long been a fan of Stav’s creative output, from her illustration, to her actually LOL-inducing Instagram captioning for said illustration, to the practical application of her aesthetic through jewellery design and now fashion and textiles and a foray into the “serious art world” through gallery shows and neon-fused illustrated artworks. There are a few people in the world who gave me more life as a creative. She is one of the most focused and dedicated practitioners I have observed, a master class in leveraging your skills to earn an income to facilitate a creative practice that speaks to your soul. I wanted to talk to Stav about the practical side of how she structures her day and designs the life to facilitate the work. She shares wisdom around motivation, determination and how to tackle the process of moving into a career path that is aligned with your what you’d not only love to do - but what you NEED to do.
