Very few people get paid to visit shipwrecks—but for Stephanie Gandulla, it's all part of the job. Stephanie is a scuba diver, maritime archeologist, and resource protection coordinator for the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The agency safeguards Lake Huron's historic shipwrecks, many of which have yet to be discovered. That's where Katie Skinner comes in. She's an assistant professor at the University of Michigan and the director of the school's Field Robotics Group. Skinner and her team have been developing autonomous underwater vehicles that can find new shipwreck sites, all on their own. For humans, a search is costly, time-consuming, manual work. But for AI? Skinner thinks it could help us find answers in a snap. On this episode, Stephanie and Katie talk about using AI to find shipwrecks in a literal lake of data, so that they can spend less time searching and more time exploring—as only humans can do.You can learn more about some of the people and projects featured in this episode, including… The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary at thunderbay.noaa.govKatie Skinner and the University of Michigan's Field Robotics Group at fieldrobotics.engin.umich.eduPrevious efforts to autonomously map Thunder Bay's historical shipwrecks at theverge.com/2020/3/5/21157791/drone-autonomous-boat-ben-shipwreck-alley-unh-noaa-great-lakes-thunder-bay~ ~ ~Working Smarter is brought to you by Dropbox Dash—the AI universal search and knowledge management tool from Dropbox. Welcome to Episode 410 of the Microsoft Cloud IT Pro Podcast where hosts Jay Leask and Joy Apple are joined by special guest Ben Stegink for a discussion recorded live from the North American Cloud and Collaboration Summit in Branson. In this episode we focus on how organizations must adapt their change management approaches for the Microsoft 365 cloud environment. We discuss the fundamental shift from traditional IT operations, where organizations controlled software update timing, to cloud-based services with continuous updates outside of their control. Jay and Joy emphasize that successful modern IT requires cross-functional teams where IT partners closely with business units, communications, and training departments rather than operating in isolation. We then talk about the need for a shift in governance models to empower business users while requiring IT to balance user control with necessary oversight.Key themes include the importance of ongoing communication and adoption strategies, using tools like Viva Engage communities for peer-to-peer support, and adopting a "yes, and" approach to business requests rather than defaulting to "no." The episode emphasizes treating technology deployment as an ongoing service relationship rather than a one-time project, which is essential for success in the rapidly evolving cloud environment. So what does modern work look like today? Richard talks to Karoliina Kettukari about her new role as the Head of Modern Work for a financial services company in Finland, and what modern work has evolved. Karoliina talks about how the pandemic accelerated modern work, such as being able to work anywhere and collaborating with whomever you need to. Post-pandemic, there is a push for more work from the office, but remote work is still essential - and now artificial intelligence is changing the landscape again. The rapid evolution of AI technologies is a challenge for admins, but the productivity benefits are becoming obvious - you need some good governance!LinksMicrosoft 365 Copilot OverviewThe EU Artificial Intelligence ActEuropean Collaboration SummitRecorded March 6, 2025

For many people, work simply isn't working anymore. Wages have stagnated while the cost of living continues to rise. Endless hours in front of a screen leave us burnt out. More often than not, the labor we do feels disconnected from any real purpose. But what if there was another way? Imagine a future where small communities live in harmony with the land, and the work we do is rooted in care for each other, for the earth, and for ourselves. It may sound idealistic and overly simplistic, but isn't there something undeniably appealing about that vision?Today, we're thrilled to be speaking with Megan Leatherman, founder of A Wild New Work, a career development agency with a refreshing twist. Megan helps her clients uncover their passions and craft more fulfilling professional lives, while also guiding them to reconnect with nature, align with the rhythms of the seasons, and trust their own inner wisdom. In this conversation, we explore what's broken about our current work culture, how we arrived here, and how we might begin to cultivate meaningful, grounded lives in a world shaped by capitalism and social media.Show NotesA Wild New WorkA Wild New Work: The PodcastFollow A Wild New Work on InstagramCaliban and the Witch: Women, The Body, and Primitive Accumulation by Silvia FedericiComposting CapitalismRise Up RootedBiophilic Solutions We'd love to hear from you! Keywords: work, capitalism, history, nature, ancestors, modern work, change, feudalism, community, sustainability, organized labor, socialism, community, adulthood, land connection, cultural shifts, personal growth, nature, aliveness, uncertaintyBiophilic Solutions is available wherever you get podcasts. Welcome to episode #977 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Dan Heath is a frequent and always welcome guest on this show, and with good reason - few people have done more to translate complex human behavior and organizational dynamics into smart, actionable insights. You probably know Dan as the co-author (with his brother Chip Heath) of some of the most beloved and bestselling business books of the past two decades, including Made To Stick, Switch, Decisive, and The Power of Moments. His work has reshaped the way leaders think about communication, decision-making, change, and the emotional beats that define experience. With his latest solo book, Reset - How To Change What's Not Working, Dan continues this tradition - offering a practical framework for identifying leverage points that can unlock real transformation, even in systems that feel stuck or bloated by inertia. In this conversation, we dug into why momentum beats speed, how progress (not perfection) is the most powerful motivator in the workplace, and why so many leaders miss the mark by focusing on customer experience while overlooking the employee experience. We also talk about the role of self-doubt, the necessity of feedback, and how the Great Resignation isn't just about quitting - it's about a systemic failure to reimagine work. Dan's signature mix of rigorous research, compelling storytelling, and approachable wisdom is on full display here. You should also check out his podcast, What It's Like To Be…. If you've ever wondered why change efforts stall - or how to get unstuck with the same people and resources - this one's for you. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 56:48. Elizabeth Anderson is one of today's leading political philosophers and has spent years studying how the work ethic shapes our economy, society, and politics. In her latest book, Hijacked, she explores how hard work, a principle originally intended to advance the virtue of helping others, has been used by parts of society in ways that harm workers. This is the first of a three-part series tracing the history of the work ethic, from its religious roots in Martin Luther and the Reformation to its influence on modern policies like prison labor reform in California. In this episode, Elizabeth and Dart dig into the early history: how the Protestant Reformation shaped ideas about labor, how work became a moral obligation, and how these centuries-old ideas still shape our world today. In this episode, Dart and Elizabeth discuss:- How work became a divine duty- How Locke's labor theory shaped ideas of property and work- The work ethic as a moral weapon against the poor- The origins of blaming poverty on personal failure- Why we still measure human worth by productivity- How poor laws shaped early ideas of economic survival- The hidden influence of these ideas on work today- And other topics…Professor Elizabeth Anderson specializes in moral and political philosophy, feminist theory, social epistemology, and the philosophy of economics. She holds the positions of Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy and Women's & Gender Studies, and Max Shaye Professor of Public Philosophy at the University of Michigan. A MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Elizabeth has written extensively on democracy, labor, and economic justice, including her latest book, Hijacked: How Neoliberalism Turned the Work Ethic Against Workers and How Workers Can Take It Back. **BEST OF** The way we work has never changed quite as much as it did during the pandemic. Sure, you probably knew a couple of people with home offices or flexible hours, but after lockdowns, remote work went from a rarity to the new normal. When everyone was suddenly forced to stay inside, we all realised we could get by with tools like Google Docs and Zoom. But what if we were wrong? Adam Nathan, the co-founder and CEO of Almanac, worries that where we work has changed, but how we work hasn't caught up yet. We're using tools created for a different time, he says, and simply updating the tools won't do the trick. Adam shares Almanac's ‘modern work principles', and explains why addressing our workflows and strategies is the key to keeping up with the pace of change. On our final episode this season of Working Smarter we talk to Sophia Wang, an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Stanford University. Wang leads the school's ophthalmic informatics and artificial intelligence group, which uses the latest machine learning techniques to analyze electronic health records. In practice, that means looking at disparate sources of data—from doctors' notes and eye exam data to diagnostic imagery and billing codes—and finding the sorts of patterns that can be difficult for humans to spot.Hear Wang talk about using AI to extract useful information from a sea of unstructured data, and how to make better decisions with the data you already have—which, in Wang's case, means improving outcomes for glaucoma patients and providing a better quality of care.Show notes:Learn more about Sophia and her researchVisit Stanford University's Ophthalmic Informatics and Artificial Intelligence Group~ ~ ~Working Smarter is a new podcast from Dropbox about how AI is changing the way we work and get stuff done. You can listen to more episodes of Working Smarter on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, or wherever you get your podcasts. Now there is a danger with building friendships, which I said before, because there are many organizations that need to cut back, are too big, are facing adverse times, and have to do cutting. So it has to be clear that we're building a relationship to get the job done. That's the purpose of an organization. We're not building an organization to have warm and fuzzy friendships; that's the means to an end, not an end in itself. And we have to realize that there are going to be times in which we're going to have a reduction in force. There are going to be times in which we get rid of people.Organization are held by network of relationships02:49: Organizations are held together not by the organizational chart, but by the network of relationships that people have in the organization. On vulnerability in leadership37:41: The research on vulnerability shows two things: leaders who are vulnerable about their core competence lose power…[38:12] So leadership, which questions your basic competence, does lose power and does lose influence, but vulnerability, which shows your humanness, is different.Do you have an understanding of human psychology, social psychology, and cognitive psychology to have a good relationship?08:56: In general, the more that we know, the more we can start to see them as an individual, as a unique person, which is, I think, what all of us want and which all of us are. There is no rule that applies equally to all people. So I think that the broader our knowledge, the more we can find out. What approach allows me to understand you as an individual, you as a person, and we can move beyond me treating you like an object, which you don't want and I don't think I want.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Neo-FreudianismGallup, Inc.Jeffrey PfefferPetrarchGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Stanford GSBProfessional Profile on LinkedInHis Work:Connect: Building Exceptional Relationships with Family, Friends, and ColleaguesInfluencing UpInfluence Without AuthorityPower Up: Transforming Organizations Through Shared Leadership
For our seventh episode of Working Smarter we're talking to Drew Houston, the co-founder and CEO of Dropbox. If you've been online long enough, it's likely Dropbox was your introduction to the cloud. The goal is still more or less the same—give you one organized place for all your stuff—but it's no longer just about storing and syncing files. A hundred files on your desktop is now a hundred tabs in your browser, and Houston believes AI is what will finally bring calm to the chaos that's been created by the tools of modern work. For Houston, AI's potential is so great that its arrival feels like a civilization shift. It's also not just a professional preoccupation; AI is a personal interest too. A few years ago he decided to teach himself machine learning in his spare time—and some of the AI tools Houston now uses to run Dropbox are ones he built himself. Hear Houston discuss why it's gotten so hard to find the information you need to do your job, the types of tasks we'll increasingly offload to our silicon brains, and what Dropbox is doing to help make modern work more meaningful and fulfilling.Show notes:To learn more about Dropbox Dash and try Dash for free, visit dropbox.com/dashThe two books Houston mentions are “High Output Management” by Andy Grove and “The Effective Executive” by Peter Drucker~ ~ ~Working Smarter is a new podcast from Dropbox about how AI is changing the way we work and get stuff done. You can listen to more episodes of Working Smarter on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, or wherever you get your podcasts. Are IT leaders prepared to harness the full potential of AI in today's fast-paced business environment? In this episode of the Tech Talks Daily Podcast, I sit down with Paige Costello from Asana to explore this intriguing question. Paige, who leads AI strategy at Asana, shares her insights on the evolving role of IT leaders and how Asana's new AI-powered product features are shaping the future of work. As the enterprise work management platform of choice for many Fortune 100 companies, Asana is at the forefront of connecting strategy to execution for cross-functional team collaboration. Paige discusses the significant responsibilities IT leaders now bear, with 77% feeling personally accountable for driving IT transformation and 90% believing AI is crucial for overcoming future business challenges. Yet, a surprising 31% of executives and employees report a lack of a strategic plan for deploying AI within their organizations. We delve into Asana's innovative approach to AI with the introduction of "AI Teammates," a feature designed to seamlessly integrate AI into workflows. This development leverages Asana's unique data model, providing contextual accuracy that enhances productivity and decision-making. Paige also shares the future roadmap for Asana, which includes AI-powered reporting, visibility, and goal tracking. Our conversation also highlights the changing dynamics within IT leadership. As AI becomes more integral, IT leaders find themselves increasingly consulted on AI strategy, a shift that brings both opportunities and challenges, such as the need for careful budgeting and managing the pace of AI adoption. Despite the enthusiasm among employees for AI, there remains a disconnect with cautious executives, often due to low AI literacy and a lack of strategic vision. Throughout the discussion, Paige emphasizes the concept of collective intelligence—blending human and AI expertise to achieve superior outcomes. She notes that individuals can be up to 33% more productive when collaborating with AI as a teammate, enabling teams to tackle more complex tasks effectively. Join me in this insightful episode as we unpack the transformative power of AI in IT leadership and explore how tools like Asana are paving the way for smarter, more efficient workflows. How do you see AI reshaping the role of IT leaders in your organization? Share your thoughts and let's continue the conversation.

Today on Integrative Cancer Solutions Dr. Karlfeldt is joined by Jennifer Payeur and she shares her journey who, starting at the age of 22, experienced frequent travel to Europe for work. This lifestyle, characterized by long hours, isolation, and constant exposure to unnatural environments such as fluorescent lighting and airplane cabins, took a toll on her health. Despite efforts to maintain a healthy diet while traveling, the lack of nutritious food options and exposure to environmental toxins, such as jet fuel and radiation, contributed to a cancer diagnosis. The diagnosis came as a shock to colleagues who viewed the Jennifer as health-conscious, prompting a deep reflection on the underlying causes of her illness. The narrative underscores the complexities of health and disease, particularly cancer. Jennifer, identifying as a Type A personality, was driven by a need to achieve and be seen, often at the expense of her health. Despite suffering from various illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and chronic fatigue, she continued to push herself, ignoring the signs of deteriorating health. The journey of unraveling the root causes of illness revealed connections to childhood trauma and a misalignment with her true self, leading to a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological layers that contribute to physical ailments. This introspection led to significant lifestyle changes, including leaving a high-stress corporate job and embracing holistic healing practices. Jennifer's path to recovery involved alternative treatments, dietary changes, and a focus on building their immune system. Discovering the power of plant stem cells played a pivotal role in their healing process, offering a means to detoxify and revitalize the body at a cellular level. This journey highlights the importance of addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of health and the need for a holistic approach to healing that considers the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit.Intense travel and isolation: Jennifer began a job involving frequent travel to Europe at age 22, leading to isolation and exposure to unnatural environments, such as fluorescent lighting and airplanes, which they believe contributed to their cancer diagnosis.Unhealthy diet and exposure: Despite efforts to make healthy food choices, the frequent airport junk food, jet fuel, and radiation exposure during travel likely impacted their health negatively.Surprise diagnosis: Colleagues were shocked by the speaker's cancer diagnosis, given their reputation for prioritizing health, highlighting the disconnect between appearance and underlying health issues.Emotional and physical factors: Jennifer reflects on how a Type A personality and a drive to overcome signs of illness contributed to chronic stress and a series of health problems, including cancer.Holistic understanding of cancer: Jennifer emphasizes the complexity of cancer, linking it not only to physical factors but also to emotional trauma, personal beliefs, and environmental toxins, advocating for a deeper understanding and holistic approach to health.----Connect with Jennifer - https://nature-provides.com/----Grab my book A Better Way to Treat Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Most Effectively Treating Our Biggest Health Threat - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM1KKD9X?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860 ----Integrative Cancer Solutions was created to instill hope and empowerment. For our third episode of Working Smarter we're talking to May Habib, the co-founder and CEO of Writer, a generative AI platform for businesses. Writer helps streamline the writing parts of people's workflows, so they can get to the “thinking part” of their jobs more quickly. For Habib, AI isn't just about automating mundane or repetitive tasks, but a way to amplify the talent and intelligence of a team. There are some types of writing, such as an RFP or a JIRA ticket, where it doesn't always make sense to start from scratch. By using AI to learn how a company works and the knowledge a person needs to do their job, Writer aims to make those kinds of writing-related tasks faster, easier, and more efficient. Hear Habib talk about how AI-powered tools like Writer can help increase the amount of time you spend in flow, supercharge your existing workflows, and create more space for insight, creativity, and inspiration in your job.
