Ahead of the dreamy indie icons' return to Australia, founding member and vocalist Rachel Goswell shares songs by performers who have inspired her to take to the stage, from ABBA to Joni Mitchell.
Paul sits down with Danish producer and musician Anders Trentemøller, unpacking his journey from early electronic EPs to the lush, melancholic soundscapes of his latest album, "Dreamweaver." Anders opens up about his creative process, the emotional depth of his music, and even the quirks of writing lyrics in a language that's not his own.We also touch on the delicate balance between creativity and constraints. Anders shares how setting artistic boundaries can actually ignite innovation, and contrast the introspective solitude of studio work with the energy of live performance. We dive into the struggles of writer's block and the importance of receiving constructive feedback, all while emphasizing the joy that comes from evolving a piece of music with trusted collaborators. Anders has gone from bedroom producer to international success and we dive into one of his key moments with the seminal album, "The Last Resort."Finally, we explore how childhood influences and early musical experiences shape our paths. We also get a peek into his collaborative spirit, whether working with musicians like Rachel Goswell of Slowdive or navigating the complexities of evolving musical styles.Dreamweaver, Trentemøller's 7th studio album is out now, find out more here.Follow Paul Hanford on InstagramLost and Sound is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's BBC World Service radio documentary “The man who smuggled punk rock across the Berlin Wall” is available now on BBC Sounds. It's the final days of 2023 and therefore time for us once again to reflect on all of the amazing music released this year. 2023 will go down in We Dig Music history as the year Tracey went Pop, Colin went cynical, And Ian continued submitting doom metal songs almost as long as the rest of the playlist put together. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Bell WItch, Blink 182, Boygenius, The Bug Club, Cloth, CLT DRP, Craven Faults, Crosses, Darkher, Doja Cat, Drab Majesty ft Rachel Goswell, Fred Again & Brian Eno, Kenya Grace, Heartworms, The Hives, KEN Mode, Lichen Slow, O., Caroline Polachek, Рожь, Quiet Man, Ren, Olivia Rodrigo, Monika Roscher Bigband, Sleep Token, Sparks, Special Friend, Sunnsetter, Svalbard, & Yo La Tengo.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5Q6haXdmCbDR2quq13dX6N?si=e3c4280a88c642d0Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQ If you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Hello Talkhouse listeners; this week we're resurfacing a talk featuring a frequent Talkhouse contributor who seems to be having yet another career moment: Michelle Zauner, aka. Japanese Breakfast. You may have caught Zauner and her band on the season finale of SNL, or playing your local theater, or on every playlist worth a dang. This talk, which originally ran on June 3, 2021—around the time the latest Japanese Breakfast album, Jubilee, came out—features Zauner in conversation with Rostam, the musician and producer best known as part of Vampire Weekend. If you like what you hear, there are two more Zauner-led Talkhouse Podcasts in the archives, one with Alex Cameron, and the other with Rachel Goswell of Slowdive. -------- Today's Talkhouse Podcast started with a little bit of serendipity in the form of album release dates: Both of our guests, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast and producer/musician/former Vampire Weekend guy Rostam, have excellent records coming out on June 4. They're also fans of each other's work, so we figured it made plenty of sense to put them together. Zauner's album, her third under the Japanese Breakfast name, is called Jubilee, and as you'll hear in this conversation, it took a deliberate turn toward slightly happier themes than her first two. It comes hot on the heels of Zauner's first book, a heartbreaking memoir called Crying In H Mart, that deals with her mother's death—also a theme in her early music—and food, lots of food. It's a really touching read, and an ideal companion to her musical catalog, which grew in really compelling ways with Jubilee. Rostam is best known as a founding member of Vampire Weekend, and even though he officially left the band a few years ago, he still contributes some songwriting and production work. He's kept plenty busy otherwise, producing records and writing songs with an incredible array of other artists, from Hamilton Leithauser to HAIM to Clairo. His first proper solo album is the gentle, string-filled, fantastic Half-Light, which came out in 2017, and now he's releasing Changephobia, which as you'll hear ditches the string section and brings in a sax, among other things. These two jump right into a conversation that flits around from silly to deep: On one hand, they talk about childhood loves of chess and fencing and the importance of song five on an album. On the other, Zauner gets rightfully annoyed at interview questions she gets that other people don't, and Rostam talks about being Persian in a band that was sometimes pegged as particularly white. It's a funny, smart chat. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan. The Talkhouse theme was composed and performed by The Range.

Trentemøller - "All Too Soon" from the 2022 album Memoria on In My Room. Danish producer Anders Trentemøller has been making cinematic electronic soundscapes for over 20 years now and is constantly finding new avenues of traversing genre-bending lush landscapes. The latest singles off his forthcoming sixth studio album, Memoria, “In the Gloaming” and our Song of the Day “All Too Soon,” find him employing textured dream pop and the glistening vocals of his girlfriend Lisbet Fritze for a majestic and mysterious mood. According to Trentemøller's Bandcamp: “‘All Too Soon' examines ostensibly diametric relationships of light and dark, life and death, day and night, love and hate, while actually presenting them as dualistic, and symbiotic, influencing each other as they interrelate. What might appear to be a dispiriting take on our mortality could just as easily be interpreted as its acceptance being liberating.” Memoria follows up 2019's Obverse, which featured Rachel Goswell of Slowdive and Jenny Lee Linberg of Warpaint. Wayne Hussey is goth-rock royalty. Between his tenure as guitarist in The Sisters of Mercy to founding the The Mission UK, the frontman/guitarist has created some of the most iconic and evocative work in the genre...and beyond. Never content to rest on his laurels, Hussey remains a creative force, as evidenced on The Mission's 2016 epic 'Another Fall From Grace.' And now he's lending his musical talents to a host of charities for Covid-19 frontline workers with a new charity version of one of his biggest hits. Hussey has remade The Mission's 1988 classic 'Tower of Strength' (retitled as 'TOS 2020') with a huge host of musicians (christened as The ReMIssion International) that reads like a Who's Who of alternative icons, including (deep breath) Andy Rourke, Billy Duffy, Budgie, Evi Vine, Gary Numan, James Alexander Graham, Jay Aston (who we've interviewed for this podcast), Julianne Regan, Kevin Haskins (who we've ALSO interviewed for this podcast), Kirk Brandon, Lol Tolhurst, Martin Gore, Michael Aston, Michael Ciravolo, Midge Ure, Miles Hunt, Rachel Goswell, Richard Fortus, Robin Finck, Steve Clarke, Tim Palmer and Trentemøller. In this episode, Hussey and I discuss what inspired remaking 'Tower of Strength', the Herculean task of assembling such an intimidating list of collaborators (and how he got Jay and Michael Aston to appear on the same track), his thoughts on being a musician during a pandemic, his other recent creative pursuits and more. So check it out, and be sure to stick around afterwards, when we'll be playing the radio edit edition of 'TOS2020', And you can purchase the new single in a variety of digital and physical formats by visiting the band's official website. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/slis/support

Mike also discusses catering to the emo crowd in your 40s, working with Hayley Williams of Paramore and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, and how one of the songs has ties to Pure Bathing Culture. We also head back to that famous house from the first album's artwork to hear why it doesn't grace the latest, and what the future holds for the band. Slowdive In Conversation with Mark Van Hoen Channel of Light host, Mark Van Hoen, caught up with Neil Halstead of Slowdive for a mid-tour conversation about the evolution of the band from their start in the late 80s to the present day. Slowdive formed in 1989 in Reading, Berkshire (UK). The shoegaze pioneers released four albums between 1991 and 1995. The band reformed in 2017 and released the self-titled album Slowdive. In Conversation is produced by dublab.
