For this episode Danny Hurst is joined by Martyn Ware, the multi-platinum producer, composer, 3D soundscape artist, Electronically Yours podcast host and founding member of The Human League and Heaven 17. As a producer, Martyn worked with artists as diverse as Tina Turner and Terrence Trent Darby, before co-founding with Vince Clarke the world-leading immersive 3D soundscape design and composition firm - Illustrious Company. Martyn shares how the unique soundscape of the steel producing town he was raised in influenced his music. He also talks about living in London for 40 years and shares the creative processes behind his music. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS The sound of the steel forges created a unique soundscape that had a profound effect on Martyn and other musicians from the area. Regardless of what type of music you want to experience you can find it being played somewhere in London. The decision to go down the electronic path arose in part from wanting a way to merge the many different forms of music they liked together. Being exposed to such an eclectic mix of people and experiences has helped Martyn to keep the music he produces fresh and different. It's always evolving. Martyn provides a fascinating insight into how a track is built up element by element. Martyn shares how the process he follows when writing a song has evolved, including the pros and cons of having access to new tools such as software. London is a place of extremes; a blend of small villages. BEST MOMENTS “I can hear that industrial sound in your music.” “As you entered the town, it sounded almost like a heartbeat.” “I like the homogenization of different social strata.” “It seems to me like they're trying to make London into a gated community for rich people .” “Do you like what it evokes in you? … If it doesn't make me feel anything, it goes in the bin.” “I can't ever imagine Tina Turner finding anything difficult to sing.” “There were those who thought electronic music was witchcraft.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://martynwareofficial.co.uk https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/electronically-yours-with-martyn-ware/ https://illustriouscompany.co.uk https://www.inplaceofwar.net HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Mit "Some Great Reward" haben Depeche Mode es 1984 zum ersten Mal in die Top drei der deutschen Albumcharts geschafft. Auch ihr erster Nummer-1-Hit "People Are People" ist darauf. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Some Great Reward" wird im Podcast gesprochen (15:39) – "Lie To Me"(21:10) – "People Are People"(43:45) – "Somebody"(52:43) – "Blasphemous Rumors"(01:02:14) – "Master And Servant" __________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Some Great Reward" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/swr1-meilensteine-depeche-mode-some-great-reward-100.html __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? In this conversation, we will look at the relationship between Paramedic theory and practice with Vince Clarke. We will dig into Vince's doctorate in Education on the subject, various frameworks for the acquisition of skills through simulation, reflective models of learning, the progression from novice to expert, directive versus facilitative learning, theory/practice conceptual frameworks, and finally, student views and where they perceive learning originates.   To do this I have Vince Clarke with me, Vince has been a paramedic since 1998, progressing on to an IHCD tutor. As well as completing an undergraduate degree in Paramedic Science, he has completed a master's degree in health law and ethics in Practice and a Doctorate in Education.  He is currently the principal lecturer at Hertfordshire University Paramedic Science Program, the trustee for education with the College of Paramedics, and an external advisor to several organisations. Vince's thesis can be found here: https://uhra.herts.ac.uk/bitstream/handle/2299/21089/99008890%20Clarke%20Vince%20final%20version%20of%20submission.pdf?isAllowed=y&sequence=1 This podcast is sponsored by PAX. Vince Clarke joins me on the podcast today to talk about the making of his first ever solo album 'Songs Of Silence'. which comes out on November 17th via the always excellent Mute records. Clarke is true electronic music legend. Co-founder of Depeche Mode, he wrote many of the band's early hits including, 'New Life', 'Dreaming Of Me' and 'Just Cant Get Enough'. After leaving Depeche Mode, Clarke teamed up with singer Alison Moyet to form Yazoo. The duo achieved a number of top five hits in the 80s. He then formed The Assembly and collaborated with a number of talented musicians, including Undertones singer, Fergal Sharkey In 1985, Vince formed synth-pop act Erasure with Andy Bell and from 1986 to 2007, the pair achieved 24 consecutive top-40 entries in the UK. They are still releasing chart topping albums to this day. Their latest album 'Day-Glo (Based on a True Story) released in 2022, received great reviews. Oh, and not's not forgot all the remixes and production work he's done over the years Impressive stuff! You can pre-order the album here: https://mutebank.co.uk/collections/vince-clarke

Episode 162: Erasure - Chorus (1991) (Featuring Andrew Dineley of "Art on Your Sleeve") - Part 1 If you having been wondering when we would once again discuss an album by one of the two greatest synthpop duos in history, wonder no longer.  The day is today and the duo is Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, aka Erasure! Sarah usually writes these show notes while I edit the episode; however, she seems to have somehow stuck me with both responsibilities this time.  I'm too tired to write in third person, so I'm just going to do this like I'm talking with you one-on-one. We were really excited to be joined by our wonderful friend Andrew Dineley, who you surely know from the very fine "Art of Your Sleeve" podcast and Classic Pop Magazine.  If you haven't yet listened to "Art on Your Sleeve", please check out the link near the bottom of these ramblings. In this episode, we set the table for the next two installments which will cover the album's ten songs.  Here, we talk about where Erasure was in their career in 1991, how they built a relationship with producer Martyn Phillips, Vince and Andy's writing process, insight into "Chorus"'s design and sleeve artwork, the shared qualities between Andy Bell and Freddie Mercury, reviews of the album, our personal histories with the record, and the "click heard around the world!" There is also information on a special Erasure giveaway included in the episode, so be sure to check that out.  It's a great way to win a special CD and a limited-edition t-shirt. I'll close with the immortal words of ChatGPT when asked about Erasure's "Chorus" album: "As we tune our ears to the harmonious cadence of Erasure's 'Chorus,' we find ourselves caught in a time capsule, transported back to the vibrant days of 1991. Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, the maestros behind this auditory masterpiece, have woven a tapestry of synth-pop brilliance that continues to resonate across generations. 'Chorus' is not merely an album; it is an anthem of unapologetic self-expression, a testament to the enduring power of music to shape our souls. Like a painter with a vivid palette, Erasure splashes the canvas of sound with bold strokes of emotion, leaving us breathless and inspired. This album, with its pulsating beats and ethereal melodies, remains a beacon of artistic excellence, proving that true genius transcends time and trends. So let us, like the echoes of 'Chorus,' carry forward the legacy of boundless creativity and unbridled passion, for in its resounding notes, we find not just music, but the very essence of what it means to be alive." When it comes to Vince Clarke, we just can't get enough (was that too obvious?).  So "don't go" anywhere (how 'bout that one?)! Born Vincent John Martin on July 3, 1960 in South Woodford, Essex, England, Vince Clarke is a classically trained musician who got the bug to make electronic music after hearing Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark in the late ‘70s, which led to the formation of a band with school chum Andy Fletcher called No Romance In China.  Shortly after, the duo added Martin Gore to the mix and called themselves Composition of Sound.  With the addition of lead vocalist Dave Gahan, Composition of Sound morphed into Depeche Mode.  Following the first Depeche Mode album Speak & Spell, Clarke teamed up with Alison Moyet for Yazoo, releasing two huge albums and a string of singles that hovered near the top of the charts. After Yaz, Clarke took up various production duties and projects, most notably The Assembly, before landing upon his most formidable partnership with Andy Bell in Erasure - an alliance that has resulted in 19 studio albums to date, including 5 that have hit #1 in the UK, and some of the most beloved singles of the past nearly 40 years.  That's only scratching the surface, of course, but let's just put it this way…he is an electronic music pioneer, a synth-pop legend, someone who helped to expand the definition of what a rock star looks like and sounds like.  Because some might say that we have trouble at times sticking to the topic at hand, we also cover the newly minted adult in Uncle Gregg's house (hint: it's not him), intimacy issues, a genius (question mark?) way to save the planet, jorts, hot knees, and cuddles.  Lots o' cuddles.  And what does Hollywood legend Jamie Kennedy have to do with Vince Clarke?  We're not sure either. One thing's for certain...we will NOT be calling ourselves Only Three Lads US! Awww yeah! Our O3L Spotlight Artist of the Week is UK garage rock trio The Len Price 3, whose 2007 debut album is being reissued on April 7th by Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records.  The record will be available on vinyl for the first time, and also contains four unreleased bonus tracks on CD and digital.  We are thrilled to play one of those unreleased tracks, the incendiary "Break Your Neck" on this week's episode.

In this episode, Fenner Pearson chats to Neil Arthur about his writing process and how he works on the Blancmange albums, with Benge acting as his foil and producer, and his collaborations with Fader and Near Future. Arthur touches on the number of ideas “buzzing and fizzing” around his head that has led to him recording sixteen albums in eight years. This in turn provides an interesting insight into the whole process of releasing an album in 2022 compared with 1982!Perhaps what comes across most clearly is Arthur's creative energy, from the studio where he records and develops his ideas, through the time spent working with Benge in the latter's studio, right up to his enduring enjoyment of playing live, including his current tour where he performs with the enthusiasm and energy of someone who obviously relishes performing their music to an audience. And there is no sense that Neil is slowing down: he is in the process of mixing completed albums with Near Future and a covers album with Vince Clarke, as well a new collaboration with Liam Hutton and Finlay Shakespeare as The Remainder, and a new Fader album. On top of that, he will be performing at a number of festivals next year. It's an inspirational interview, in which Neil Arthur illustrates and exemplifies how a passion for music and a relentless creative energy has directly resulted in his artistic longevity and joyous cascade of albums from Blancmange and his many other projects.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

PRP Mini Concert Memories: Episode 1 -  Yazoo, 7-20-2008 Welcome to the first episode of a new feature Brian and Sarah are trying out, called PRP Mini Concert Memories. The idea behind it is that Brian and Sarah will choose a ticket stub from their sizable collection of concert tickets, and they'll spend a few minutes reminiscing about that particular show. In the future, the selections will be random, but for the inaugural episode, Brian thought it would be fun to hearken back to the first episode of the podcast proper, which was about Yazoo's album Upstairs at Eric's. So in this installment, Brian and Sarah talk about seeing Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet performing as Yazoo on the Reconnected tour, at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Join Brian and Sarah as they share their memories of this show, featuring a duo they-- along with many other people-- never expected to see on stage together. But it really did happen, and they have the pictures to prove it!
