The Substance is a 2024 body horror film written and directed by Coralie Fargeat. It follows a fading celebrity, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) who, after being fired by her producer (Dennis Quaid) due to her age, uses a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley) with unexpected side effects.Noted for its satirical elements and grotesque, hyperrealistic imagery, The Substance is Fargeat's second feature film, after Revenge. Motivated by societal pressures on women's bodies and aging, she wrote the screenplay over two years, assembling a team to co-produce the film between France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Principal photography in France lasted 108 days. It made extensive use of prosthetic makeup designed by Pierre-Olivier Persin and primarily practical effects; these included suits, puppetry, dummies, insert shots, and approximately 21,000 liters (5,500 US gallons) of fake blood to portray Elisabeth's drug-induced transformation. The film score was written by Raffertie and features a cover of "Pump It Up!" by DJ Endor. The Substance premiered on May 19, 2024 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival main competition, where Fargeat won Best Screenplay. It was released theatrically in the United Kingdom and the United States by Mubi on September 20, 2024, and in France by Metropolitan Filmexport on November 6, 2024. At the box office, the film grossed $77 million on a $17.5 million production budget and became Mubi's highest-grossing film. It was a critical success and received numerous accolades, including five nominations each at the 97th Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and the 82nd Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy). For her performance, Moore won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and earned Best Actress nominations at the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. On her fiftieth birthday, Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-celebrated but now-faded Academy Award-winning Hollywood film star, is abruptly dismissed from her long-running aerobics TV show by the producer, Harvey, due to her age. A distraught Elisabeth crashes her car while distracted by a billboard of herself being taken down. At the hospital, a young nurse covertly gives her a flash drive advertising "The Substance", a black market drug that promises a "younger, more beautiful, more perfect" version of oneself.Plot[edit]

Bangalore based duo Audio Units showcases a more downtempo, laid back-side to their aesthetic in Wild City Mix #109. Brothers Ashwin Baburao and Ashrith Baburao have been making music together as Audio Units since the early 90s. Ashwin had already established himself as a selector by 2000, playing at large festivals and venues across the country, while Ashrith dived into the self-described ‘geekier’, more technological side of things. Audio Units’ sound traverses a range of styles within experimental, often bass heavy house and techno music tailored to suit the needs of the dance floor. Over the last couple of years, the outfit has managed to release music through labels like Dutchie Music, Deep Edition Recordings, Qilla, Soupherb and many more. Their charismatic live lets are usually brimming with energy, which is why their laid back mix #109 for Wild City came as a bit of a surprise. The brothers forego the music they usually have to play to cater to club audiences for more downtempo, minimal and melodic electronica best heard on headphones. Beginning with some trance courtesy H.U.V.A. network, the selection goes on to exhibit an array of experimental electronic tunes by the likes of Detroit based percussionist Shigeto and British producers Raffertie and Rival Consoles. Big names like Four Tet, Moderat and Com Truise follow in the second half along with Audio Units’ original, stellar tune ‘Grainspace’. Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementJoe bought his first decks after moving to Manchester in the late 90s to pursue the acid house dream. With a schedule that involved clubbing three nights at week, he was soon running his own night, ‘Milk’ at the New Order owned Dry Bar, while DJing at other clubs around the city and purveying an ADD-ish eclecticism that had been born out of bleary nights watching the young Chemical Brothers at the Heavenly Social. Moving back to London, he started writing for DJ Mag, alongside a ‘proper’ job, was a founding member of a well-known music website, before the greedy machination of one of its members taught him the value of having a contract (though possibly not written on a napkin), and continued to put on parties in a variety of clubs and bars.Following a hugely successful warehouse party in East London to mark the momentous arrival of 07.07.07, he began running a new series of nights, under the name ‘No Way Back’, at a grimy all-night pub in Brixton, moving through a series of bigger venues, and playing guest slots at clubs like Trailer Trash and Neon Noise alongside Fischerspooner, until finding himself running the lounge for Chew the Fat! at The End (including, appropriately enough, on 08.08.08).With a hugely successful room, helped in a no small part by a large old school jungle collection, a job and residency swiftly followed, with gigs alongside Hervé, Tittsworth, Duke Dumont, Riton, Jack Beats, Trevor Loveys, Drums of Death, Raffertie, Reso, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990, and more, even standing in as a fake Fake Blood to a packed Corsica Studios when the real Fake Blood failed to show. And summer 2009 saw gigs at Glade and Notting Hill Carnival.Leaving Chew the Fat! to become an editor at DJ Mag, Joe now has a new party in the offing and is currently in the studio with Dan Cat, who reached the heights of Pete Tong Essential New tune under his previous guise of Cheshire Catz.www.myspace.com/joerobotssoundcloud.com/joe-roberts
