The Seattle Sounders: Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan, Raul Ruidiaz, Nico Lodiero, Nouhou, Yeimar, Joao Paulo, and Brian Schmetzer. Lumen Field. Turf. Ted Unkel. Chris Penso. The deck was stacked with reasons why LAFC shouldn't win. Why LAFC shouldn't advance to their third Western Conference Final in our 6-year history. Why the Black and Gold faithful would be rueing another missed opportunity. Well, somewhere along the way, nobody in Black and Gold got the memo as LAFC wins an absolute nail-biter, 1-0, on the road at Lumen Field, over the hated Sounders! LAFC will host the Western Final at BMO on Saturday, December 2nd!Denis Bouanga did it yet again, scoring in the 30' for the match's only goal. From minute one through the end of the 8 minutes of second-half stoppage time, LAFC's defense, led by Maxime Crepeau between the pipes, Giorgio Chiellini at center back, and a huge play by Timothy Tillman, put on an absolute masterclass. What a match! Also on this episode, former LAFC players make their mark on this year's MLS Cup and USL Playoffs, the young kids of LAFC2 and the Academy make their mark on a few youth national team camps, and Filly apparently tries hard NOT to make marks on his nice pants while watching the match. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and we hope you enjoy Episode 285. It's one of our favorite episodes of the year!

Give the Sounders this: At least they made it entertaining. The Sounders finally broke out of their scoring doldrums by putting three past Charlotte FC, including a brace from Raul Ruidiaz and another from Cristian Roldan in both of their first starts in about two months. The only problem? The Sounders also gave up three goals, albeit all pretty well taken. Each of Charlotte's goals erased a Sounders lead, meaning the Sounders blew more leads in this game than they had in their previous 17 combined (it had only happened once). In the second half of the show, we discussed Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris' USMNT call-up, suggest holding the Leagues Cup concurrently with the Gold Cup in future seasons and give our outlook for the second half of the season.  Sponsors Full Pull Wines Watson's Counter If you'd like to become a subscriber to our Substack, that can be found here. Coming out of a week that was pretty darn depressing and only seem to get worse as it wore on, the Sounders put together a workmanlike win that should calm any lingering concerns that this season was poised to go off the rails. A quick recap: First they lost 4-1 to the Timbers, collapsing in a way we've never really seen. Then on Wednesday, Raul Ruidiaz goes down with yet another hamstring injury, that night Jordan Morris plays 88 minutes for the USMNT in an ultimately meaningless friendly that ultimately kept him out of startering consideration and then on Saturday we find out that Nouhou was a last-minute scratch due to some migraines. Through about 75 minutes, the Loons made life pretty difficult, setting up shop in a midblock and refusing the Sounders any sort of transition opportunities.  But rather than get over-anxious or settle for a tie, the Sounders found a bit of magic through Fredy Montero and a perfectly hit shot from Albert Rusnak to secure three points. Stories to Watch: Wednesday's FoeAfter this weekend's series of matches, Sounders FC remained the only undefeated team in Major League Soccer with a 6-0-3 record. Its leading scorer, Raul Ruidiaz, is tied with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez from the LA Galaxy for the most goals thus far this season, having each netted seven. On the other end of the field, the Sounders have been utilizing backup goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland after longtime stalwart Stefan Frei went down with an injury earlier this season. Kreilach Kid Strikes AgainLast weekend RSL's Damir Krielach netted his third brace of his MLS career, earning himself a spot on the MLS Team of the Week and a nomination for MLS Player of the Week. Episode 118 – The Referee’s A Sounder! We are back for yet another September episode of Defenders of the Banc, and it’s another tough result for LAFC. LAFC makes their way up to the Emerald City to take on the defending champs, and, unbeknownst to them, the referee, as well. It’s a 3-0 loss to the champs, and it’s Episode 118 of Defenders of the Banc. LAFC started out well, and it was punch/counterpunch for the first 25 minutes or so. Solid chances by both sides wiped away by errant touches or an offside call, and one solid save by Pablo Sisniega. In the 27th minute, things took a bit of a turn as Dejan Jakovic was called for a handball that everyone in the building missed the first time around. Nico Lodeiro slots it home and LAFC are down early, yet again, 1-0. Just five minutes pass before referee Joseph Dickinson switches out his yellow PRO referee top for rave green, as Latif Blessing is whistled for a foul in the box that is literally never actually called a foul except for tonight, and one more Nico Lodeiro PK later, it’s 2-0. The sky is falling along with the rain in Seattle. LAFC looked to regroup after the half and bringing on both Andy Najar and Eduard Atuesta seemed to do the trick. Play improved and passes tightened up a bit, but LAFC was still having trouble creating meaningful chances. To further the Black and Gold frustration, a clear handball on Seattle wasn’t just missed, there was also no call to review it. Turnabout couldn’t even lead to fair play. A crisp connection between Joao Paulo and Raul Ruidiaz late in the match salted things away for Seattle, and it’s another punchless, shutout loss for LAFC in September. Also, on this episode, a significant PK makes its way into This Day In LAFC History, Hello Kitty stops by, Filly learns the word pejorative, and for much of the episode, it’s actually Scarf who sounds like the optimist. We celebrate both Hispanic Heritage Month and Rosh Hashanah while Beita Time returns to MLS. The boys remember their “Wait, What?!” moment of the podcast, and it’s not Kenneth Vermeer’s FIFA 21 rating, Filly quotes Dolly Parton, and Scarf helps the haters on social media do some good with their awful hot takes. Lick your wounds quickly, Defenders, as LAFC heads back home to take on the Whitecaps in just 5 days! We hope you enjoy Episode 118 of Defenders of the Banc!

LAFC. Seattle. It's taken just two-plus seasons for MLS to have a new must-see matchup. Last year's Supporters Shield winners taking on last year's MLS Cup champions. A game made all the more important considering LAFC's previous result against Carson, our current unfamiliar place in the standings, and our holes in the lineup created by injuries to our captain Carlos Vela and midfielder extraordinaire Eduard Atuesta. Could LAFC stop the slide of recent losses and poor play at the site of our first win in club history? In a word, no.Episode 113 sees Filly in Las Vegas, Scarf in Lawndale, and our back line in tatters. Seattle's Peruvian talisman, Raul Ruidiaz, struck yet again, this time from distance, while Jordan Morris ran laps around the defense en route to a brace. Questions abound. Should we see more of San Pablo in net? Was that injury the end for Danilo Silva? Do we need to look outside the club for defensive help? Can we call "take-backs" on the deal with Nashville? Though the sky may be falling right now for LAFC, there were several silver linings during the match. Jose Cifuentes's midfield play looked solid as he did his best to fill in for Atuesta. Diego Rossi netted once again to move back to the top of the Golden Boot race. And in a bit of history for the club, 16-year old Christian Torres, the pride of Fontana, became the first LAFC Academy product and Homegrown signing to take the pitch in an MLS match. Perhaps the light at the end of the tunnel isn't an oncoming train after all. On this episode, we wish a very happy 21st birthday to Phillip Ejimadu while recalling our own 21st birthday celebrations. This Day In LAFC History takes us back to Carlos Vela's "Houdini" goal against San Jose, our "Wait, What?!" moment takes 61 seconds, Scheduling with the Scarf makes a comeback, and Banc of California Stadium gets a new address! Hear yet another reason we are proud of Bob Bradley, inspired by Mark-Anthony Kaye, and disgusted with Dell Loy Hansen. Not much time to cry in our Cheerios, Defenders, as we take the pitch in just three short days against San Jose at home. Will we right the ship against the Smurfs? You'll have to tune in to Episode 114 to find out!

Hello Defenders! It's been over 10 days since you've heard from us. Yes, part of the time was spent nursing our wounds (and hangovers) from the defeat at the Banc in the Western Conference Finals, but we have also been anticipating the MLS Cup Final between our new least favorite team in the league, Seattle, and our former captain's current home, Toronto. Joining us for a fun, sometimes off the rails, and Theraflu-infused episode are Nina and Panda of the Center Mid Chicks podcast and a friend to the Defenders of the Banc (and Filly's co-worker), Byron Paredes. Our day started with a heavy dose of EPL, as we took in the Liverpool vs. Manchester City match with our friend Al Raitt. After a bit of grilling (and a beverage or two), it was time for the MLS Final, where, for the third time in four years, it was Seattle vs. Toronto. Seattle takes the crown in 2019, 3-1, behind another playoff goal for Raul Ruidiaz, some help from Toronto to get on the board first, and the eventual winner by Cup Final MVP Victor Rodriguez. A late goal from superstar substitute Jozy Altidore wouldn't be enough, as Toronto fell in Seattle in front of almost 70,000 fans. Also on this episode, our apologies to the Hanna family, as Filly prematurely announces the death of beloved animal caretaker Jack Hanna. Scarf knew you were very much alive and well! Hear Nina reminisce somewhat poorly about the times she rejected Scarf's dating advances several times! Hear Scarf cough, choke and struggle to breathe as he waits for the Theraflu to kick in! What a show! With the end of the season comes the start of the madness, as a small trade window, contract extension deadlines, and the expansion draft all loom on the horizon. Rest easy friends, as Filly and The Scarf will have another episode for you in about a week, discussing all the dates, moves, and possibilities. Until then, thank you for your support, and, from a very grateful podcast team, Happy Veterans Day to all our servicemen and women, especially Panda and Papa Scarf. We thank you all for your service.

Episode 67 is here, and, unfortunately, with it comes the end of the 2019 season, with two less wins and one fewer game than we had hoped. Apparently, it’s time to wake up from the dream season that was 2019.In an episode we are calling Yellow and Green Make LAFC Blue, Filly and The Scarf recap the ugly defeat at the hands of the Seattle Sounders. While it’s hard enough to play against the 11 on the other side, the yellow team did us no favors tonight either. Beyond blatant handballs, flagrant fouls, and a lack of awareness of what was happening on the pitch led LAFC to fight an uphill battle all night, even while opening the game’s scoring in the 17th minute. A wonder strike from Eduard Atuesta gave us an early lead, but the front line of Nico Lodeiro, Jordan Morris, and the debut game against the Black and Gold for Raul Ruidiaz proved too much for LAFC. The 3-1 defeat doesn’t take away any of our accomplishments during this historic season, but it does give the feeling of unfinished business. We have so much to be thankful for, while still being left wanting so much more. Congratulations to LAFC on a wonderful sophomore season. We at Defenders of the Banc cannot wait to see what 2020 has in store. Thank you for all of your support throughout this second season of Defenders of the Banc! Look out for new episodes, more fundraisers, and fun interviews this offseason as we look to do something other than drink out of a shoe until the first match at The Banc next season. All things considered, this seems to be a good time to be doing a live show. After a bit of a rough patch, the Sounders have now won 3 of 4, and find themselves second in the west and second in the Supporters' Shield standings by points per game. Their latest win was probably their best of the season, beating the defending MLS Cup champs 2-1 at home. The scoreline doesn't quite do the performance justice. The Sounders had the far superior chances on the whole -- only giving up two shots on goal -- which showed in a season-best expected goals total.  It was a performance I think we were all hoping to see from the Sounders, especially given that they were playing with as close to a first-choice squad as they've had for months after getting Raul Ruidiaz, Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan back from international duty. What a way to head into the first tricky portion of the schedule. The Sounders improved to 5-0-1 on the young season by beating previously unbeaten Toronto FC 3-2 at CenturyLink Field on Saturday. It was easily the Sounders biggest test of the season and I'd say they passed with flying colors, especially when you consider they were missing Raul Ruidiaz. This sets up a pretty enticing matchup with LAFC on the weekend, who may well be unbeaten as well depending on tonight's result. Hard to imagine how the season could have started any better than it has. As the Sounders enter the first international break of the season, they find themselves atop the Supporters' Shield standings as the league's only 3-0 team. They've outscored their opponents 10-3 along the way, including a 4-2 win over the Chicago Fire last weekend. The goals are flowing like perfectly heated chocolate from a fountain, and the front four of Raul Ruidiaz, Nico Lodeiro, Victor Rodriguez and Jordan Morris have combined for a rather astounding eight goals and seven assists. Fullbacks Kelvin Leerdam and Brad Smith have even gotten in on the act with a couple goals and an assist between them. In addition to discussing the Sounders' awesomeness, we also talked to Lamar Neagle about his new team, Game of Thrones and his thoughts on Sounders fashion. Not a bad way to start the season. For the first time since 2015, the Sounders won their first season opener, overwhelming expansion FC Cincinnati 4-1 in a match that probably could have been even more lopsided. Their four goals actually equaled their goal-scoring output of their past six March home matches combined and it featured Kelvin Leerdam's first goal since 2017, Jordan Morris' first goal at CenturyLink Field in nearly two years and Raul Ruidiaz's sixth straight game with a goal. All in all, pretty satisfying stuff. Lo' and behold the Sounders are heading into another busy week riding a four-match unbeaten run. Yes, that's a season best and they are actually looking reasonably good doing it. The latest result was easily their most convincing, as they scored their first shutout win of the season by beating the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0. Neither of the goals were particularly well constructed -- Nico Lodeiro scored a penalty and then got a brace off a whipped-in ball that badly fooled the Whitecaps goalkeeper -- but the Whitecaps never really threatened. Jeremiah and Aaron discuss the win, as well as Raul Ruidiaz's debut, Magnus Wolff Eikrem's release and the rumors around Paolo Hurtado. Chicken Little was wrong. The sky wasn’t falling for the US national team. In fact, Jurgen Klinsmann’s boys won Group A thanks to a gutty win against Paraguay and some wholesale tinkering by Colombian manager Jose Pekerman against Costa Rica. The guys break down the shorthanded victory in Philly, then look toward Ecuador in the quarterfinals with Fox Sports and Sirius XM pundit (and USMNT legend) Eric Wynalda. Rein in those expectations, but Waldo says the final is possible. FutbolMLS.com’s Kristel Valencia, a daughter of Ecuador, is an enemy until Thursday night, but she gives you the inside scoop anyway.   Of course, the tournament is bigger than Group A. First, the no call that saw Peru sneak past Brazil and eliminate the five-time World Cup winners from the tournament. Was it a handball? Of course, it was, says just about everyone but Raul Ruidiaz. Franco Panizo joins to shine a light behind the scenes, then the guys attempt to play out the tournament via prediction. Will the US make the final? Will Mexico crash out? You’ll have to listen to find out.   In the mailbag, a moment to honor the people of Orlando in their time of mourning followed by a US Open Cup preview, defense of Gyasi Zardes (but not his first touch) and advice on how to survive the summer soccer glut.
