As the green energy transition speeds up, demand for lithium — used in electric car batteries — is skyrocketing. Currently, the bulk of the global lithium supply comes from Australia and Chile, but as demand increases, countries around the world are looking to tap into their reserves. In the United States, the quest for this in-demand metal involves California, which has one of the world's largest known lithium reserves, located in Southern California's Imperial County, near the Salton Sea. These reserves have yet to be commercially developed, but companies are itching to start. In California's Imperial County, lithium extraction proposals are tied to geothermal plants that produce low-carbon electricity by extracting brine from geothermal wells. Photo by Chuck Holland. The lithium in Imperial County is located in hot brine. If done right, extraction from hot brine might be less damaging than other forms of extraction, namely that from bedrock and salt flats. But the technology involved remains unproven, and the industry comes with real risks to the air, water, and more. Locals are pushing to make sure potential costs are factored into decisions around extraction in the region, which already experiences far more than its fair share of environmental pollution; that community members have a voice in the decision-making process; and that any extraction in the region ultimately benefits the local community. Christian Torres, special projects manager with Comite Civico Del Valle, Inc, and Jared Naimark, California mining organizer with Earthworks, join Terra Verde host and managing editor Zoe Loftus-Farren to discuss the state of lithium extraction in Imperial County, the possible environmental and health impacts, and the fight to give community members a seat at the table. The post California's Budding Lithium Industry appeared first on KPFA.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of sharing a recent conversation I had with Brooke and Christian Torres. With years of experience in the trailer park industry and real estate investment world, they started their own business and quickly scaled an impressive real estate portfolio consisting of trailer parks and RV resorts across the country. Today, they share their story, including growing a trailer park portfolio to $100 million in one year's time. This husband and wife duo bring an incredible energy and drive to the table that is sure to captivate you. Join me for this informative and exciting conversation! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The power of being relationalLessons learned from hiring a contractorFlipping a trailer park portfolioTapping into the power of mentorshipEpisode Highlights: [10:09] The Power of Being Relational to Become TransformationalWhen it comes to building relationships, focusing on commonalities is key. By avoiding transactional interactions and instead seeking to connect with others on a deeper level, you open up the potential for long-lasting and meaningful relationships. Whether you're living in a high-end building like the Porsche Design tower, or simply meeting new people in your day-to-day life, take the time to ask questions and show interest in their lives and this will lead to unexpected opportunities. Rather than forcing transactions, let trust and connection grow naturally over time. This approach can lead to lifelong connections with high-performers and successful individuals who can help you achieve your goals.[33:54] Flipping a Trailer Park PortfolioBrooke and Christian's experience in growing a trailer park portfolio can be attributed to their prior success in business. As co-CEOs of a company focused on RV resorts and mobile home parks, they were able to increase revenue from $6 million to over $25 million in just two years. The company had a portfolio valuation of $100 million when they joined, and Brooke and Christian leveraged their skills to take it to an impressive $400 million valuation. Their commitment to building the company over two years resulted in annual revenue of $25 million. This experience gave them the expertise and confidence to start their own business and scale it rapidly to become industry leaders.[37:32] How Brooke and Christian Leveraged Their Past to Build a Trailer Park PortfolioBrooke and Christian's experience in scaling a company provided them with invaluable knowledge about what not to do. They used this insight to approach their own business with a clear plan of action. After taking massive action, they repositioned properties that they knew fit the model of a successful company they had previously worked with. This allowed them to accumulate a valuable portfolio that was attractive to potential buyers. Ultimately, they sold $78 million worth of their portfolio to the other company, while keeping three properties for themselves. Their ability to learn from past experiences and leverage that knowledge enabled them to build a profitable trailer park portfolio.Resources Mentioned: Connect with Wyatt Graves: LinkedIn | Website The Mentee Podcast: Website | Apple |

In late February, Grimes and her brother Mac Boucher made $5.8 million in under 20 minutes by selling copies of two short videos on the blockchain, among other digital artworks: The roughly 30-second clips, “Earth” and “Mars,” featured a cherub floating in outer space, set to a bit of spacey music. Days before, the artist Christian Torres sold a gif of a famous cartoon cat at auction for almost $580,000—even though the meme had long been available in the form of a YouTube video, where it went viral in the way that makes things kind of belong to all of us.Kings of Leon, an act hardly associated with the cutting edge of music and technology, followed in their footsteps on March 5, when it became the first major rock band to release an album as an NFT, or non-fungible token, which loosely translates to a kind of digital certificate of ownership that exists on a blockchain. The release, When You See Yourself, netted somewhere between $1.4 and $2 million in five days, and the auction isn't even over yet. Tory Lanez, Mike Shinoda, Steve Aoki, and Shawn Mendes have jumped on the bandwagon, too. For fans of independent music and culture, it's been hard to bear witness to the NFT's sudden eruption in the mainstream conversation without feeling a bit… queasy. Dizzy? We spent most of the first season of The Culture Journalist talking about how the pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated the existing structural inequalities of the culture industry. How is the spectacle of already-popular artists making unimaginable sums of money by selling their work as speculative assets on the blockchain supposed to be anything but a reminder of the excesses of financialization and the widening gap between the rich and the poor?At points, the frivolity almost felt like a troll: After we wrapped recording for this week's interview, we logged online to discover that artist Ryder Ripps and his new bride-to-be, Azealia Banks, had used the technology to sell a 24-minute sex tape as an NFT, for $17,000. That many of the beneficiaries of these buzzworthy sales donated a portion of the proceeds to charity almost seemed like a tacit acknowledgement of the cupidity in the air. (Although maybe the Ryder Ripps and Azealia Banks stunt was just supposed to be some kind of commentary on that dynamic.)Image courtesy of Mat Dryhurst. For Emilie and Andrea, one question in particular stood out: What does the unfolding NFT craze mean for the future of music—and particularly, for independent artists? To help us make sense of this strange new chapter in the cultural economy, we enlisted Mat Dryhurst, a Berlin-based artist, technologist, and teacher who you've probably seen commenting on such brain-bending matters on Twitter—and who co-hosts the fantastic Interdependence podcast with Holly Herndon. He's been exploring the possibilities of blockchain technology in his work for some time, and is a firm believer that it has the potential to rewire the economics of independent music from the ground up—just not in the way that you might expect, judging from the recent hullabaloo. We spoke to Mat about how NFTs work, how cryptocurrency may represent a potential antidote to streaming's devaluation of musical value, and why the boom-and-bust speculation market we're seeing right now is only just the "GeoCities era" of this technology's potential. Season 4 is almost upon us, and, with the preseason about to begin, Filly and the Scarf are here to catch you up on all the Black and Gold news from the past few weeks! The biggest news of the last 11 months or so MUST be the potential return of at least some supporters to the Cathedral of the Black and Gold, Banc of California Stadium, starting on April 1. As long as numbers continue to progress in a positive direction, we can expect at least some of us to be there for our boys!LAFC announced a rather abbreviated preseason schedule, featuring an intrasquad scrimmage and two games against the Revolution. It's the first Scheduling with the Scarf segment of 2021!LAFC also finalized two incredibly important partnerships, one with the Las Vegas Lights of the USL and another with Real So Cal and their youth squads. The pipeline has now been extended through Southern California and even into the Nevada desert! LAFC brought in Steve Cherundolo to head the USL club, bringing a USMNT and Bundesliga legend's pedigree to the pipeline. From youth opportunities, to the Academy, to USL, and on to the parent club, the Black and Gold system is stronger than ever. We couldn't be happier for our Athletic Training staff, Sean and Luis, as they were named Staff of the Year according to PSATS. Our first captain in club history, Laurent Ciman, retired to join Thierry Henry's staff on Club de Foot just in time to be deserted by the leader of the Foot Clan, becoming the second former LAFC member to join the coaching ranks this offseason. (Benny!) On the player news front, Uruguay hopes Diego Rossi and the recently loaned Brian Rodriguez can give their national team a lift. It hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for Rayito in Spain, either. it's a pair of U-23 national team call-ups for Tomas Romero (El Salvador) and Marco Farfan (USA). Hopefully, they'll still be on the final rosters for their respective countries when they are announced March 8. Our history-making trio of teens, Erik Duenas, Tony Leone, and Christian Torres, were all called in to join El Tri's U-17 camp, marking another first in their wonderful careers. Finally, our eMLS stud, RemiMartinn, makes one more push for the eMLS Cup in the Last Chance Qualifier, beginning March 16. We are back and couldn't be happier. Our fans are getting healthier, our club is practicing again, and we are together in World Famous Filimonster Studios for another episode! Let's get back to the Banc!
This week the boys have their very first guest, the very funny and talented Christian Torres, and they write a giant monster movie for the modern times.
It’s the final match of the season, and potentially, the final match at Banc of California Stadium in 2020. A familiar foe awaits, as for the fourth time this year, LAFC takes on Portland. On Episode 129, Filly and the Scarf break down all the good and the bad from our tussle with the Timbers! Things got off to a beautiful start, as just 5 minutes in, Carlos Vela, back in the starting lineup, slots one home off a rebound to put the home squad up 1-0. The connections between Diego Rossi, Carlos Vela, and the 16-year old Christian Torres came early and often for the Black and Gold, and it was fun to watch. Rossi found the post and Vela found the crossbar as LAFC head into the half up just one goal. It would be more of the same early in the second, as Rossi found the post again. It was a back and forth affair in the second, with LAFC creating fewer chances and Portland finding more comfort, especially off the foot of Diego Valeri. Kenneth Vermeer came up huge several times but was equaled by his counterpart between the pipes, Steve Clark. Just before stoppage, Portland found the equalizer, as Southern California native Jorge Villafana got on the end of a Diego Valeri pass to make it 1-1. It was a somewhat frustrating, if not oddly poetic, end to LAFC’s regular season. LAFC sit 7th in the table, which means a date with the Sounders in Seattle to kick off the playoffs. Revenge is a dish best served Black and Gold! It’ll be about a 2-week break for Bob and the boys, which should be plenty of time to get ready for Seattle. Diego Rossi ends the season as the youngest Golden Boot winner in league history, and he and Vela become the first teammates to win the boot back-to-back. LAFC also finishes the season as the Best in the West and the Best in MLS at scoring goals, pacing the circuit with 47. Rounding out the episode, we fondly remember Alex Trebek while saying goodbye to the Supporters Shield. This Day in LAFC History celebrates the birth of the first signing in club history while highlighting a goal for Brian (just not one for LAFC). Filly nurses a hangover, Scarf congratulates another expansion team on their playoff berth, and the boys can’t help but feel sorry for Philadelphia as they raise a plastic shield. LAFC vs Timbers Press Call with Bob Bradley, Diego Rossi, and Christian Torres. Gio Garcia - @GioGarciaLA https://twitter.com/GioGarciaLA
This week on Inside LAFC, Max is joined LAFC Academy Director Todd Saldaña. They chat about the debut of Erik Dueñas and Christian Torres, scouting in Los Angeles, and the impact the Club and brand has had on young Angeleno players.
In the aftermath of the MLS is Back tournament, Los Angeles Football Club has continued its up-and-down season during phase one of the restarted Major League Soccer season. It's a black and gold rollercoaster with only four more games to the regular season, and over the last four matches, LAFC is trending upward. LAFC's last four matches are as good a stretch as the club has had since the restart of the 2020 season. Back-to-back 3-1 victories over Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders, a 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps and a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers works out to a 2-1-1 record, and there and positives to draw from each match. The youth movement, led by Christian Torres and Erik Dueñas, give the Portland draw and even the loss to Vancouver a silver lining. The consecutive victories by multiple goals speak for themselves, but LAFC's performance against Seattle with a short-handed roster stands out at the brightest moment of the four. Writers at Large Alex Dwyer and Ryan Wallerson, alongside long lost Josh Gross(!!!), have gotten the original band back together. On the latest episode since the restart, the crew recaps LAFC’s encouraging performances over the last four matches and preview the end of the regular season.
Gio is joined by Vince La Rosa to talk all things LAFC ahead of the fourth El Trafico of the year vs LA Galaxy at the Banc of California Stadium this Sunday. They talk about Christian Torres goal vs Timbers that helped the team secure points and what that meant for the LAFC Academy and for Christian. They also discuss Latif Blessing not traveling with the team, the four DP's returning to the team, and what to expect this weekend's matchup. It’s Episode 125, and we are doing something we don’t normally do here on Defenders of the Banc: We are celebrating a tie! It’s been a long and tumultuous road both on and off the pitch in 2020, so when little victories come, we need to take time to celebrate them. Tonight’s match against Portland certainly gave us another moment to celebrate, and we recap the entire 102-minute match in Portland here on 125. LAFC got off to an inauspicious start, with an early yellow on Jordan Harvey opening the bookings in just the 5th minute. The Black and Gold had a few chances in the opening half but, for the most part, Portland controlled the pace and flow of the first 45 minutes. San Pablo looked very good, making several saves and keeping it scoreless going into the locker room. Jeremy Ebobisse, fast becoming a Rose City thorn in the side of LAFC, found the back of the net against us yet again, as Pablo seemed to be at least a little off of his line after a bad turnover by Adrien Perez. With LAFC down at about the hour mark, Mahala checked in and immediately provided some life and energy to the lineup. The Academy kids check in along with Dejan Jakovic for the final push, and LAFC played their best 20 minutes of the match with the young guys leading the way. Three minutes into stoppage, more LAFC history was made as midfielder, yes, midfielder Eddie Segura found Mahala who slotted a soft touch pass to 16-year old wunderkind Christian Torres for his first MLS goal and the game’s equalizer. LAFC walks out of Portland with a point. Also on this episode, Carlos Vela has a girl! Congratulations to Carlos, Saioa, and Romeo on welcoming their new daughter, India, into the world. LAFC gets their four stars back from international duty as Bob Bradley coaches his 100th match for LAFC across all competitions. It’s a rare full week off for LAFC, and Filly and the Scarf intend to take full advantage. It’s time to rest up, run that 5K for Athletes In the Making, and detox just in time for the LA Derby as Carson makes the trip into Los Angeles to take an L at the Banc.
LAFC Press Call with Bob Bradley, Christian Torres, and Adrian Perez. Gio Garcia - @GioGarciaLA https://twitter.com/GioGarciaLA
Episode 124 is up, and on this episode, we recap LAFC’s trip up the coast to Portland. To take on Vancouver. How 2020 is that? And unlike our previous match, a 6-0 shellacking of the Whitecaps, this match did not end well for the Black and Gold. It was not without its moments of history for the “Next 5 Years” LAFC hardcover book, however. Christian Torres became the first Academy player to start a match and 15-year old Erik Duenas took the pitch for the first time for LAFC. During a first half that will live on only in our imagination thanks in part to an outage at the YouTube Studios and the sultry tones of Dave Denholm on the radio, LAFC fell behind early on a goal by “The Tank”, Lucas Cavallini. With their bunker-first mentality and a starting lineup with six players who didn’t start in the big loss, Vancouver went into the half up a goal but down many LAFC viewers. LAFC would fall behind by two after another goal scored by Cavallini, assisted by the same pair of Dajome and Montero, before a few subs by Bob breathed some life into the match. Mahala, Duenas, and a little earlier, Bryce Duke, changed the energy of the match, and the score line. Despite the best efforts of the ref, who was in charge of just her second MLS match ever, Duke helped LAFC earn a PK. After not one but two bites at the cherry, as Max says, Eduard Atuesta slots it past Evan Bush to cut the deficit in half. It really did seem like LAFC would claw back to earn a point on the road, but it was not to be, and Vancouver took all three points on the road. It was a big week for LAFC signings, with Jesus David Murillo and Mark Segbers coming on board, two signings that should definitely bolster our back line just in time for a playoff push. Is Murillo the answer at CB we have been clamoring for since the Walker Zimmerman trade? We hope so! This Day In LAFC History celebrates the birth of John Thorrington while News and Notes sees four LAFC players facing off on the international stage. The Defenders find themselves an amazing breakfast spot in La Habra (Eggbred) while Dexter Quinn joins us in the third chair for the first time in 98 episodes. If only we let him speak more… LAFC plays again in just 4 days as they hope to solidify their place in the table. That’ll be Episode 125, a quarter of the way into the next 100. We couldn’t be more appreciative of all the support for us here at Defenders as we make the playoff push during our final five matches.
Advisor Graciela Berumen and a student panel of Sarahy Colorado, Christian Torres, and Kevin Alvarez tell us all about We Are F1rst, the importance of civil and social involvement, and all of the oppurtunities available to first generation students at Washburn. https://www.facebook.com/WU1stGen
Christian Torres talks “Culture shock from Atlanta to Langston University, Never having a plan B, Mothers tough love, Handing out roses+ More.
History has a way of repeating itself. Coming into this matchup LAFC have dominated the series vs San Jose and today was no different. LAFC was back at the Banc in search of their winning ways and boy did they win today. LAFC, without Carlos Vela and Eduard Atuesta, managed to once again dine on Smurf Stew. How does Smurf Stew taste, it’s good enough for 5 servings. Diego Rossi and Bradley Wright-Phillips continued to add goals to their stat lines with some beautiful plays. We had two newcomers make their presence felt in the goal columns. Welcome Jose Cifuentes and Danny Musovski. So exciting to see these young men enjoy the fruits of their labor. This was also a coming out party for Chiqui Palacios he added an assist and several important tackles. Latif Blessing started in the backline and was seen everywhere on the pitch. We finally looked solid in the backline. We even had an Andy Najar sighting and another glimpse of academy player Christian Torres. It certainly was a fun night at the Banc. Episode 114 has some of the usual segments, This Day in LAFC History, Scheduling with the Scarf, and we even managed to remember our Wait What segment. Hear Filly howl like a wolf, and Scarf call someone a poop-sickle. All this and more on the 114th edition of Defenders of The Banc
LAFC. Seattle. It's taken just two-plus seasons for MLS to have a new must-see matchup. Last year's Supporters Shield winners taking on last year's MLS Cup champions. A game made all the more important considering LAFC's previous result against Carson, our current unfamiliar place in the standings, and our holes in the lineup created by injuries to our captain Carlos Vela and midfielder extraordinaire Eduard Atuesta. Could LAFC stop the slide of recent losses and poor play at the site of our first win in club history? In a word, no.Episode 113 sees Filly in Las Vegas, Scarf in Lawndale, and our back line in tatters. Seattle's Peruvian talisman, Raul Ruidiaz, struck yet again, this time from distance, while Jordan Morris ran laps around the defense en route to a brace. Questions abound. Should we see more of San Pablo in net? Was that injury the end for Danilo Silva? Do we need to look outside the club for defensive help? Can we call "take-backs" on the deal with Nashville? Though the sky may be falling right now for LAFC, there were several silver linings during the match. Jose Cifuentes's midfield play looked solid as he did his best to fill in for Atuesta. Diego Rossi netted once again to move back to the top of the Golden Boot race. And in a bit of history for the club, 16-year old Christian Torres, the pride of Fontana, became the first LAFC Academy product and Homegrown signing to take the pitch in an MLS match. Perhaps the light at the end of the tunnel isn't an oncoming train after all. On this episode, we wish a very happy 21st birthday to Phillip Ejimadu while recalling our own 21st birthday celebrations. This Day In LAFC History takes us back to Carlos Vela's "Houdini" goal against San Jose, our "Wait, What?!" moment takes 61 seconds, Scheduling with the Scarf makes a comeback, and Banc of California Stadium gets a new address! Hear yet another reason we are proud of Bob Bradley, inspired by Mark-Anthony Kaye, and disgusted with Dell Loy Hansen. Not much time to cry in our Cheerios, Defenders, as we take the pitch in just three short days against San Jose at home. Will we right the ship against the Smurfs? You'll have to tune in to Episode 114 to find out!

On this episode of I Don’t Care, host Kevin Stevenson was joined by Christian Torres for a discussion about the ins and outs of revenue cycle management, or medical billing, in the healthcare industry. Torres has more than two decades of experience helping healthcare professionals manage this complex aspect of the business.“We help doctor’s offices and other healthcare providers, whether they’re therapy, counselors, you name it, with their billing,” Torres said. “We help them get paid by the insurance, and, really, we help them navigate the ever-changing of insurance claim filing.”Today, coding has also become critically important – essentially, with the advent and adoption of electronic healthcare management systems, there has arisen a necessity to correctly provide diagnosis codes in these systems to ensure the process of making claims and getting paid runs as smoothly as possible.Barriers have risen in the face of this process as a result of much more detailed and specific diagnosis codes – as Torres put it, instead of a few codes for types of broken legs, there could now be a code for breaking a specific leg, in a specific place, because of a fall off of a skateboard.Stevenson and Torres also dove into more issues surrounding complications and challenges associated with electronic health record systems, the pressures put on medical staff assigned with managing these processes, and more.
LAFC completed an undefeated preseason with Wednesday's victory over Toronto F.C., but all the work that Bob Bradley & C.o have put into the preseason was in preparation for the club's Champions League debut. The warm up period is over; Leon awaits on the other side of President's Day weekend. Uruguayan forward Brian Rodriguez continued his preseason dominance, scoring his third goal in three matches for LAFC against Toronto. Carlos Vela and newly minted academy legend Christian Torres scored the other goals in LAFC's 3-1 victory on Wednesday. It's always good to see the MVP contributing to the offense, but watching the 15-year-old Torres, the first academy player to score in a senior team match, find the back of the net was a heartwarming moment for the entire organization. Now it gets real. LAFC will play its inaugural CONCACAF Champions League match against Leon on Tuesday, and though the team looked impressive this preseason, LAFC still has many roster questions as it heads to Mexico to try to get a result on the road in arguably the biggest game in the club's short history to date. Ryan Wallerson of the Los Angeles Daily News and Writer at Large (he said small, but we all know Dweezy is anything but) Alex Dwyer are joined by Tigers Supporter Group member and youth soccer coach Pierce Maher to talk about the Toronto F.C. match, how LAFC should balance returning players with those who participated in the full preseason, and begin to look toward Leon.
The preseason comes to a close with a mid-day, mid-week match against Toronto FC, and with that comes Episode 82 of the LAFC Podcast for the People, Defenders of the Banc!Walker Zimmerman was traded to Nashville SC. We didn't believe the headline when we read it, either, but it's true. Yes, it was for a potential record-setting amount of GAM for a defender, but, wow. Just like that, one of the key members of our record setting first two seasons is gone. It felt different than the departures of Tyler, or Lee, or Laurent. But the team presses on without him, and so do we.Just 6 days from the kickoff of CCL in Guanajuato, LAFC wraps up the 2020 preseason with a solid 3-1 win over Toronto. The start of the match felt a little different, as the Black and Gold played to a crowd much smaller than usual due to the noon kick time on a Wednesday. The pre-match festivities saw the debut of Sunny, the falcon named after Sunset Blvd. After her longer-than-usual flight, and in front of about 6,000 or so, our boys did not disappoint. Brian Rodriguez got us on the board first on a pass from Carlos, and he nets his 3rd in as many games this preseason. We are really hoping this carries over into the regular season, CCL, and beyond! After Toronto tied things up at 1, it was our MVP's turn to get in on the action. This time, it wasn't a left-footed curler as much as it was a straight smash home to put LAFC back up 2-1. In the 81st minute, another chapter in the LAFC history books was written, as Latif Blessing sets up LAFC Academy product Christian Torres for the goal, the first goal scored by an Academy player in team history. This might just be a preseason match, but it's moments like this that we can all build on and look optimistically toward the future. Congratulations to the 15 year old on his history making accomplishment. Also on the episode, there is a Peter-Lee Vassell sighting in Denmark, a Locomotive trains with LAFC, a surprise trialist makes his mark in the final match before it gets real, Imad and Joe share a birthday, and Number Watch 2020 hits Day 64. Oh, and Filly sings Good Charlotte! But don't worry, no XFL news to be found. It's on to Leon for Scarf, and Rome for Filly. Will we return from Leon with a point, three, or the dreaded zero? You'll have to tune into Episode 83 to find out!

As a youngster, Christian Torres always scored well on tests so he was told he should be a lawyer when he grew up, but he thought that would be boring. He needed more of a rush, so inline skating and other thrill activities took up his time. However, he got a scholarship to a prestigious high school and was actually looking to be a profiler in the FBI at one point. He had started at the Police Academy when debt began to overwhelm him, and in trying to make some easy money with a friend who was a bank teller, he got caught. His sentence in Federal prison gave him time to do some leading-edge computer work and he had a skill to take to the outside. He got married after release and his wife had an MBA. It seemed natural that the two of them had a lot of the bases covered to start a business and AriaLab was born.
