S03E05 - For the Glory KC is back with the 70th episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City had a relative active week, considering how slow the offseason has been. They played the final preseason game of leg one before coming to and from KC in the proceeding days. They'll be back in Miami by the time you read this. Outside of the preseason game itself, a 2-1 Nashville SC win, Peter Vermes gave updates on player performances, Khiry Shelton's injury and more. Then there were the transactions. Sporting KC made a trade that could open the door for a future move and added Memo Rodriguez as depth. I lay out my theory how the next few weeks and then summer transfer window may play out. My masterplan if you will (that's during segment two, timestamp below). Then we switched gears to talk about Sporting KC's youth development problem and its latest saga with Ramiz Hamouda leaving the SKC Academy without a contract and the team getting nothing for him. We also briefly talked Leagues Cup news too. The KC Current made a series of signings this week too (Mallory Weber, Regan Steigleder and Sophie Braun) as well as an extension for Lo LaBonta. Vlatko Andonovski also gave some training updates and let us know who is a full participant and who we'll still have to wait on. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics: KC gets six (!) World Cup games. Daniel Salloi is changing numbers again. Several former KC Current players are on the move. KU football at Children's Mercy Park. and Kelyn Rowe retires. Drew and Cody have a cathartic discussion about all the things that went wrong for SKC vs. Seattle last Saturday. It was a match rife with many of the problems we have highlighted for the past 12 months: Poor individual errors by veterans supposedly on the field because they aren't as prone to them, Poor effort by a team supposedly "Sporting Fit" and coached by someone that supposedly gets that effort from them, and Zero offensive ideas against a team playing Kelyn Rowe at left back. It was just a cornucopia of bad. We discuss how and why SKC got here and whether there is a way out other than just hoping the injured players can save the club when they get healthy. Tactical Corner is replaced by GM Corner this week. Drew gets into the details of the roster and salary cap situation for 2024, what the club's options are, the level of rebuild that could occur if the staff decides to do it, and whether that likely or even advisable to give the current technical staff the responsibility to do. The USMNT won their last two Nations League matches, setting up a semifinal matchup with Mexico this June in Las Vegas. We spend a fair bit of time discussing Gio Reyna's creative capabilities, and how they will likely be key to the USMNT's success over the next few years. Finally, a quick preview of this weekend's match and the issue being that there is only one fullback available currently on the roster. Music by The Spin Wires

The Colorado Rapids meltdown in Seattle in a must-win game. The Sounders went down early thanks to a spectacular goal from Jonathan Lewis. After the Sounders went down, they took over. Towards the end of the first half, Seattle tied the game. In the second half, Kelyn Rowe got sent out because of an accumulation of yellow cards. That didn't matter because William Yarborough gave an unnecessary penalty to Jordan Morris. In the end, the Rapids could not step up and deliver a win after having a man advantage for more than 45 minutes. MLS mainstay and style ICON Kelyn Rowe drops by with what has now become the infamous jacket. Post CCL championship celebrations, all the wine chat you could ever imagine, and how Macklemore helped make his CCL celebrations iconic. You won't want to miss this one!
Tonight on Sounders Weekly, Jackson Felts reacts to last night's 2-1 loss to Montreal, chats in the locker room with Jordan Morris and Kelyn Rowe, talks to General Manager Garth Lagerwey about injuries on the team, then previews Saturday's match in Toronto with Michael Singh of MLS.
Seriously, what are we doing? Drew and Cody discuss a pretty demoralizing loss to Seattle. SKC's play wasn't overtly terrible, but this was a clear distillation of clubs in vastly different places. Schmetzer had a fantastic scheme to both keep SKC from being dangerous and to exploit them for chances. Watching Will Bruin and Kelyn Rowe be significant pieces in said scheme is hard to stomach given SKC's inability to get similar value out of the same or similar players in the past, and Drew and Cody discuss why that may be. Additionally, can SKC finally move on from the possession based system that seems to be ill-conceived for the skillset of its roster? We've been talking about pragmatism for a few weeks, and we discuss some simple changes to philosophy that could potentially lead to more useful results. Do we expect them? Maybe not, but the options do exist. It's not all bad, and there are opportunities for players to continue to grow and hone their craft, and while RBNY will press heavily, they are a gettable opponent. Music by The Spin Wires

The last time the two sides faced one another Seattle took the 2-1 win at Lumen Field, prior to that they two drew 2-2 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Stories to Watch: Wednesday's FoeAfter this weekend's series of matches, Sounders FC remained the only undefeated team in Major League Soccer with a 6-0-3 record. Its leading scorer, Raul Ruidiaz, is tied with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez from the LA Galaxy for the most goals thus far this season, having each netted seven. On the other end of the field, the Sounders have been utilizing backup goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland after longtime stalwart Stefan Frei went down with an injury earlier this season. Kreilach Kid Strikes AgainLast weekend RSL's Damir Krielach netted his third brace of his MLS career, earning himself a spot on the MLS Team of the Week and a nomination for MLS Player of the Week. His five goals are tied for the third-most in the league. Combined with his three assists the Croatian is contributing to a goal every 78 minutes. Kreilach is now tied for fifth all-time in club history across all competitions with 35 goals. Magic in the MidfieldMidfielder Everton Luiz made his return to the pitch after a nearly two-month absence due to injury, coming on as a substitute in the 80th minute. We're joined this week by Niko Moreno (@ELROLONW on Twitter) editor at Pulso Sports Network and Sounder at Heart contributor. Niko's connections to the scouting side of the soccer landscape as well as his relationships with players from all over the league lend an interesting perspective to the current off season of Major League Soccer. We start off by talking about the move of Sporting Director and VP of Soccer Chris Henderson to Inter Miami where he will take over a similar role for the second year expansion side. The Sounders will have a big hole to fill in their scouting department and we discuss the successes that Henderson had with player acquisitions over the years and who will be filling the void left by Henderson's departure for the Sounders. Will there be a gap in talent coming to the Sounders as players divert to Miami? We speculate a bit on what the future holds. But will we even have a MLS season this year? Thursday night saw the 30 day negotiating window set by the league expire after invoking the force majeure clause that was put into the CBA last summer before play returned last July. MLSPA sent their own offer to league that was rejected despite the concessions that players presented. The league has since extended the bargaining window by another week and has threatened a lock out of players if no agreement is reached. Despite the uncertainty, the Sounders have re-signed a couple of familiar faces from last season in Jimmy Medranda and Stef Cleveland. Federal Way native Kelyn Rowe was also announced as a new signing by the team, joining the Sounders as a free agent from the New England Revolution. How will these players affect the formations that the Sounders roll out in 2021? Are we going to see a return to a 4-4-2 or even a 3-5-2? Niko Moreno was able to get a candid interview with Nico Lodeiro, current captain and midfielder for the Sounders. The two discussed Lodeiro's concerns about the state of the Sounders, Chris Henderson's department, Jordin Morris' move to the English Championship where he joined Swansea, and what 2021 looks like for the Sounders without the young winger. The conversation can be found on Sounder At Heart here: https://www.sounderatheart.com/2021/2/1/22259777/nicolas-lodeiro-reflects-on-jordan-morris-departure. Sam and recurring guest Matt Turner lure Kelyn Rowe onto the program to discuss his time at UCLA (lordy!), why a quick job interview in France/Germany led him to hate Canada, the highs and lows of his initial relationship with New England, sleeping around (*professionally*) last year, and a shockingly civil reconciliation for 2020. While giving him the old what-for, we also discuss Matt's obsession with Game of Thrones, Kelyn's unfortunate opinions on Pixar films, thoughts on a soccer-specific stadium in Boston, whether Robert Kraft knows them from Adam (or Sam) and we finally get to the bottom of Kelyn's LOVE for leathery wines. Also, used couches and possible crabs may have come up (maybe).

The gang's all here! Aly was back at it again on Wednesday night with Cody, Robert, and Thad to revisit the huge win over Seattle and preview Saturday's equally important match with RSL. Sporting Kansas City got the 3-2 win over the Seattle Sounders last week on the back of a Felipe Gutierrez brace. The Chilean has stepped up as of late, both on and off the field. Can he be the guy to put SKC on his back and climb up the ladder into the playoffs? We also discuss the encouraging start (and goal) from Erik Hurtado in Krisztian Nemeth's absence. He brings something different to the table and the fans are here for it. Botond Borath has claimed the starting role, but is Andreu Fontas really as bad as the criticism he's been receiving? He won't be winning a footrace anytime soon, but the entire back line is lacking in the speed department. Do you blame centerbacks or the fullbacks? There was also some breaking news while we were recording as Kelyn Rowe was traded to RSL in exchange for $75,000 in TAM as well as an international roster spot. He was unable to contribute much on the field in his short time here, so it was a fairly easy choice for Peter Vermes to move him and open up that international spot. Real Salt Lake is coming to KC on Saturday for what is a real big match (I'll see myself out). They will be without head coach Mike Petke who has been suspended by MLS and additionally by RSL for an outburst after a match. We'll also tell you who is training, who is match fit, and who the fans want to see in the Starting XI. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
