Today's guest began his career writing novels informed by his experiences growing up in the troubles of 1970s Northern Ireland such as The Second Prison which was shortlisted for the 1991 Irish Times prize.Soon after, he began writing for television and film, again bringing signature realism to his work in later projects including Michael Mann's gangster pic Public Enemies, Gunpowder starring Kit Harrington and most notably his creation of cultural phenomenon, Top Boy, for which he was also nominated for a BAFTA.My guest is Ronan Bennett.
The show “Top Boy” has had an interesting life. The gritty British drama about drug dealers on a low-income housing estate was originally cancelled in 2014 — until an unlikely saviour stepped in. Turns out, Drake was a big fan of “Top Boy” and he was able to get the show back on the air for three more seasons. Now, the drama is back again, but in a different form: a novel. “Top Boy” creator and showrunner Ronan Bennett joins Tom to talk about the history of the series, and why he wanted to write a book based on the show.

The joys of live broadcasting played out on BEHIND THE LENS this week as we had to shift gears and deviate from our planned show celebrating South African filmmaking with live guests out of TIFF and "go global" with some exclusive prerecorded interviews with production designer GRANT ARMSTRONG talking MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 3 and filmmaking brothers THOMAS & CHARLES GUARD talking DEAD SHOT. Shot on location, Grant Armstrong did extensive location scouting for MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 3 on the island of Corfu and not only found multiple locations that service the story beautifully but had to build one key set piece and "marry it" with the actual locations. In this exclusive interview with Grant, he talks about his search for the perfect locations including the top of a mountain, the color palette, finding specific locations that include the village and town square where a good portion of the film takes place, the town fountain, and a 2000-year-old olive tree, not to mention a magical hillside wedding set. Then we head to the UK to speak with filmmakers THOMAS GUARD and CHARLES GUARD about their latest film DEAD SHOT. Best known for their freshman feature "The Uninvited", DEAD SHOT is as far away from that as one can get as the brothers adapt Ronan Bennett's book "Road to Balcombe Street", taking us into 1975 UK during the heat of The Troubles. Interestingly, with this adaptation, the film shies away from The Troubles itself and instead focuses on how individuals are affected and the cycle of violence that permeates and propels the situation. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore the influence of David Simon and The Wire, as the Baltimore-set opus celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Beginning his career as a police reporter for the much respected Baltimore Sun, David Simon eventually became disillusioned with changes being made at the paper and spent a year embedded with the Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit. That resulted in the book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, which became the basis for the TV show Homicide: Life On The Street. Simon followed that with another book, The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood, which was adapted for TV as The Corner, and then created The Wire, which changed television forever. Simon has since been behind the shows Generation Kill, Treme, The Deuce and The Plot Against America. His latest project We Own This City sees him return to Baltimore, this time to tell the true story of the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption surrounding it. Ellen looks at the influence of David Simon's work with a focus on unconventional casting - Simon repeatedly casts non-actors, and people with first hand experience of the subjects he explores. She speaks with casting director Pat Moran, who has worked alongside Simon on several projects. She also talks to Ronan Bennett and Gerry Jackson. Ronan is the creator and writer of Top Boy and Gerry is the series' story consultant. Gerry is a fitness trainer but his knowledge of Hackney and connection to the local community helped Ronan to write Top Boy, and to find local talent to feature in the show, in an echo of The Wire. And Mark goes back 20 years to speak to someone who was there when The Wire began. Actor Clarke Peters was on the show for all five seasons, playing fan favourite Detective Lester Freamon and delivering some of the show's greatest lines. Mark also talks to Professor Liam Kennedy, editor of The Wire: Race, Class, and Genre - a series of essays exploring the show's portrayals of race, drug war policing, deindustrialisation, and the inadequacies of America's civic, educational, and political institutions. Also, Top Boy star Ashley Walters shares what he's been watching. Screenshot is Radio 4's guide through the ever-expanding universe of the moving image. Every episode, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode journey through the main streets and back roads connecting film, television and streaming over the last hundred years. Best remembered for containing Damon Albarn's one film acting performance, as wet-behind-the-ears aspiring gangster Jason, this week's Pop Screen argues that Antonia Bird's 1997 movie Face deserves more credit. A British gangster movie made in that brief moment before Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels inspired every screenwriter in the country to write a gangster movie, it's a brutal postmortem on eighteen years of Conservative government disguised as a brutal heist-gone-wrong thriller. Those unexpected political grace notes - including an eyebrow-raising opening cameo! - are among the topics discussed by Mark and Graham in this episode, along with the film's savvy use of genre icon Ray Winstone, the rise and fall of the Blair-era London gangland thriller, and the baptism of fire Albarn received at the hands of Quadrophenia's Phil Davis. We also praise the late, much-missed Bird and her writer Ronan Bennett, and if that sounds like we've not left much room for discussion of Blur... ...well, you're right, but that's a fine reason to donate to our Patreon where we're about to release an exclusive episode about the band's 1993 documentary Starshaped. It's the latest in our monthly Pop Screen bonuses; we've also just put out an episode of our other exclusive podcast Director's Lottery about Robert Wise, covering his films The Day the Earth Stood Still and Odds Against Tomorrow. In this episode Hugh and Jenna explore the 2017 BBC miniseries Gunpowder, directed by J Blakeson, written by Ronan Bennett and staring Kit Harington, Peter Mullan, Mark Gatiss and Liv Tyler. This time, Hugh and Jenna discuss the gunpowder plot, and what lead up to it including the transition from Tudor to Stuart Rule, religion of the period, and what happens when people are given hope, and then it is taken away, plus alcohol. Actors Ashley Walters, Little Simz and writer Ronan Bennett are here! The trio join Reece Parkinson to discuss the brand new season of Top Boy, youth violence, black representation on screen and what role a show like Top Boy plays in the current political climate.
Six years since it last aired, the TV series Top Boy is back. Although the show, which revolves around an east London estate and the people who live there, is entirely fictional it was lauded for depicting the reality of inner-city life. But even though its second series premiered to critical acclaim, Channel 4 cancelled Top Boy. It was only after an intervention by the Canadian rapper Drake that Netflix decided to bring it back. The creator Ronan Bennett came to the Beyond Today studio to talk about why he wanted to write Top Boy, the show’s revival and Drake’s involvement. We also speak to the rapper Kano about his character Sully and why the show is more relevant than ever. Producers: Seren Jones, Alicia Burrell Mixed by Andy Mills Editor: John Shields
Jessie Buckley talks about Wild Rose, the story of a Country And Western singer from Glasgow, in which she stars and sings and writes her own songs. She tells Antonia Quirke what was it was like to reach the final of talent show I'd Do Anything in 2008, and why she gave up a career on the West End stage to go back to drama school. Author and screenwriter Ronan Bennett reveals the moment he saw himself reflected on screen, in the prison drama The Jericho Mile. Writer Iain Sinclair pitches a 1960's London novel as a suitable case for the movie treatment. Industry insiders Clare Binns, Rowan Woods and Lizzie Francke pass judgement on the pitch. Antonia reflects on her recent encounter with the legendary director Agnes Varda, whose death was announced last week
Ronan Bennett is a novelist and screenwriter whose latest drama series on the BBC, "Gunpowder", dramatizes the story of Guy Fawkes from the point of view of the Catholics, who were persecuted in England at the time. All through his substantial body of work Ronan Bennett has explored the roots of violence and terrorism, something he knows about from personal experience, having grown up as a Catholic in Northern Ireland in the 1970s. He was imprisoned twice as a young man, accused of IRA terrorist offences, but was acquitted both times, not before spending a total of almost three years in prison, sometimes in solitary confinement. After he came out of prison for the second time, Ronan Bennett made the decision to study history at King's College London, and went on to do a PhD on crime and law enforcement in 17th-century England. In Private Passions he talks about how studying history is a way of trying to make sense of his own painful experience. He looks back on his childhood and chooses Berlioz's opera "The Trojans" for his mother; he includes, too, choices for his own children, who have widened his musical tastes, with Chopin and the grime artist Kano. He talks movingly about the death of his wife, the journalist Georgina Henry, and about the music which he listened to as she died - and which then gave him hope. Musical choices include Thomas Tallis, the Chieftains, Jessye Norman singing from Strauss's "Four Last Songs", and Bon Iver. A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3 Produced by Elizabeth Burke.
Antonia Quirke presents a special edition on the thriller. She hears some tricks of the trade from Ronan Bennett, writer of Face, Public Enemies and Gunpowder, who reveals why he thinks thrillers should really be called "tensers". Award-winning editor Walter Murch takes us through a key scene in the classic conspiracy thriller The Conversation and explains how to build paranoia in the audience by embedding subsonic frequencies in the soundtrack. Composer Rachel Portman explains how music can achieve the same effect with the application of low strings and alto saxophone. Alexandre O. Philippe reveals the secrets of the shower scene in Psycho in his new documentary 78/52, including the identity of the painting that covers Norman Bates' peep-hole. Woman In Black director James Watkins reveals how he took screen grabs of fifty of the greatest supernatural thrillers in movie history and dissected their key moments shot by shot in order to learn how to chill the audience to the marrow.
Stars Kit Harrington and Liv Tyler, writer Ronan Bennett and director J Blakeson discuss how they brought a new side of the gunpowder plot to light with their new BBC three-part series.
The Gunpowder Plot in a new tv dramatisation by Ronan Bennett plus presenter Rana Mitter explores anti-Catholic prejudice in Britain today with Catherine Pepinster and Tim Stanley, and historians Richard McGregor and Hans van de Ven discuss relations between Japan, US and China. And the Icelandic poet and songwriter Sjón on hisrole in Poetry International as it celebrates its 50th anniversary since it was founded in 1967 by former poet laureate Ted Hughes. Hans van de Ven has written China at War: triumph and tragedy in the emergence of the new China 1937 - 1952. He is Professor of Modern Chinese History, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Cambridge. Today's guest Gabriel Valjan lives in New England. Ronan Bennett short-listed him for the 2010 Fish Short Story Prize. His debut book "Roma Underground" the first in a series has been described as "provocative thriller with a riveting and surprising plot.
