In this episode, Father Matt and Father Brian discuss Thunderbolts* (2025), the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They explore the film's central themes of trauma and the power of love to overcome conflict, drawing connections to Christian understandings of suffering. The episode also includes reflections on recent films they've watched, commentary on the direction of the Marvel franchise, and a fun mythology quiz to wrap things up. 0:28: Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt begin by catching up on the few months since they last recorded an episode, discussing the appointment of Archbishop Weisenburger as Archbishop of Detroit and the election of Pope Leo XIV. They also catch up on some of the movies they've recently seen, including The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965) depicting the relationship between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II during the painting of the Sistine Chapel; Pride and Prejudice, the 2005 remake starring Keira Knightley; Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005); Snow White (2025); and Warfare, (2025) about he real-life experiences of soldiers in the 2003-2011 Iraq War. 10:41: Fr. Brian introduces the film that is the focus of this episode, Thunderbolts*. Released in 2025, the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. 11:48: Fr. Matt and Fr. Brian discuss the expansiveness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which shows and movies they've seen, and how keeping up with all this content can make it difficult for casual viewers to keep up with the characters, plots, and maintain a sense of engagement with the heroic characters. Our hosts also discuss how the last several Marvel shows and films seem to have been trying to convey a message or promote an agenda rather than simply tell an entertaining story. 16:33: Fr. Matt provides a brief overview of the plot and main characters of Thunderbolts*. 24:41: Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt discuss some of the major themes in the film: how to deal with the parts of ourselves that we may not like, managing the effects of wounds from our pasts, and breaking the stranglehold that psychological trauma can have on our lives. 28:46: Fr. Matt talks about how the film depicts the power of love to overcome conflict. Fr Brian adds to that discussion, noting that for the characters in the film, their success only comes when they stop working in isolation and begin working together. This is very much akin to our understanding that we do not suffer alone; Christ enters into our suffering with us. 30:56: Fr. Matt notes that the film also portrays the notion that we are not defined by our worst moments and that great freedom can come from bringing them to the light. 34:16: Our hosts share their “seeds of the word” ratings for the film, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story. 39:46: In the last segment, Fr. Brain quizzes Fr. Matt about characters from Roman and Greek mythology.

In episode 243 of Reel Therapy, Daniel and Donavon dive into Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts — exploring where it fits in the broader MCU, how it handles themes of trauma and redemption, and what the film says about mental health in today's culture. They also take a step back to examine Hollywood's responsibility in telling stories about mental health, and how films like Thunderbolts can either help or harm the conversation.A thoughtful breakdown packed with insight, emotion, and a little chaos — just like the Thunderbolts themselves.TABLE OF CONTENTS --00:00:00 - About the Episode00:00:41 - Thunderbolts*00:45:00 - Final Thoughts00:54:31 - Before We GoABOUT THE MOVIE --Thunderbolts brings together a team of morally complex anti-heroes and reformed villains from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, and more. Tasked with carrying out covert missions too messy for the Avengers, the group must confront their own inner demons while learning to trust one another.Directed by Jake Schreier, with a script by Eric Pearson, Thunderbolts explores themes of trauma, redemption, and identity against the backdrop of high-stakes action and espionage. The film continues Marvel's Phase 5 and dives deeper into the gray areas of heroism — where not every mission has a clean ending, and not every hero wears a cape.FIND US --For everything Reel Therapy and 241 Studios, check out our website:LINK: https://www.241studios.com/Follow us on:Instagram: @reeltherapy_podcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/reeltherapypod

Afterwards, we go on to discuss some new comics we are enjoying - the newest version of Heavy Metal magazine, DC's Absolute Martain Manhunter and Dynamite's new Herculoids series. We hope you will hit play to join us for some Marvelous Marvel Misfit Musings and More!!!
Dylan, once again lost without Ryan to guide him, finds his way into a review of Thunderbolts*, the latest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Are you tired of superheroes who always do the right thing? Exhausted by teams that save the day and, dare we say it, have a plan? This month, The Film Board dives into Marvel's Thunderbolts—the super squad you get when you order the Avengers from the bargain bin. Pete Wright is joined by Mandy Kaplan, Justin Jaeger, Tommy Metz III, and Steve Sarmento for a roundtable that spoils everything, celebrates Florence Pugh's star turn, and debates whether more MCU movies should end with a hug instead of a fistfight. We dig into the surprising emotional depth, the ensemble's knack for both grounded action and found-family pathos, and a Taskmaster controversy that set the chat ablaze. The conversation covers what works for Marvel die-hards and superhero newbies alike, why Florence Pugh and Lewis Pullman might be the new MVPs of the MCU, and how Jake Schreier's direction finds the sweet spot between earnest and absurd. Along the way, you'll hear our takes on trauma, group dynamics, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus's master class in playing Marvel's most maladaptive Nick Fury. This is a rare comic book movie that's as interested in grief and group therapy as it is in punching things.Film SundriesWatch this on Apple or find other places at JustWatchTheatrical trailerLetterboxd Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. Said X-Men film remains untitled, but is in active development with Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes writer, Michael Lesslie, currently writing the script. Elsewhere, Despite wide traveling rumors, James Gunn affirmed that Matt Reeves is still set to direct The Batman 2 with his Threads response “Yes. Editors - Harry Yoon, ACE and Angela M. Catanzaro, ACE THUNDERBOLTS editors Harry Yoon and Angela M. Catanzaro each gained a whole new appreciation for production crews, having spent considerable time themselves cutting on-set and as a integral part of the process. Harry reflects on his previous working relationship with director Jake Schreier on Beef and how he came on board for THUNDERBOLTS. Angela also shares her excitement about joining the MCU after working on the feature film Prey. The editors delve into the collaborative process and the importance of depicting mental health themes, and also touch on the critical balancing act of creating a film that feels both intimate and action-packed. The discussion includes the unique musical approach of involving the composers early in the production and the nuances of fine-tuning comedic timing in the edit. Directed by Jake Schreier from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, THUNDERBOLTS* is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story follows former black widow Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) as she carries out deadly operations for CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). De Fontaine faces imminent impeachment for her work with O.X.E. Group, so she dispatches Yelena, John Walker, Ava Starr, and Taskmaster to a covert O.X.E. facility under the pretense of a special assignment. Once there, they find themselves ensnared in a death trap, uniting the unconventional team of antiheroes as they take on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. HARRY YOON, ACE THUNDERBOLTS* marks Harry's second stint in the MCU with the first being Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). Immediately prior to his work on that film, Harry was being lauded for his work with director Lee Isaac Chung on the Oscar®-nominated film, Minari (2020). Harry's other work includes the films The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019), First Man (2018) and Detroit (2017). ANGELA M. CATANZARO, ACE Angela Catanzaro is a Los Angeles-based Emmy and Eddie Award-nominated editor who works in both television and feature films. Angela is a member of The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the Motion Picture Editors Guild, American Cinema Editors, and serves on the editing faculty at the American Film Institute. Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe produced by Marvel Studios. An unconventional team of antiheroes assemble -- Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. We break down the story, the characters, discuss the film's unique third act, and explore the delivery of the mental health allegory through one of the MCU's most powerful characters.
Frank and Jonathan break down Marvel's surprise decision to market Thunderbolts as The New Avengers and share a spoiler‑free then spoiler‑filled review of the film. They explore its focus on mental health, standout character arcs, and smaller‑scale storytelling that still packs emotional weight. The episode also features an in‑depth interview with producer Caitlin Delaney, who explains what a service producer really does, how to launch movies on tight budgets, and why mentorship shortens every filmmaker's learning curve. Bob Reynolds / Sentry introduces massive power balanced by bipolar‑coded vulnerability, hinting at future MCU stakes. Indie director Jake Schreier's muted color palette and tight locations give the movie an A24 vibe within the MCU. Two credit tags tease Red Guardian's comedic future and a stronger rival Avengers squad led by Sam Wilson. Producer Caitlin Delaney explains how service producers turn money and script into finished films and why every creative benefits from mentorship. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the film, a group of antiheroes are caught in a deadly trap and forced to work together on a dangerous mission.Marvel Studios first teased the formation of a Thunderbolts team within the MCU in 2021. The film was revealed to be in development in June 2022, when Schreier and Pearson were attached. The main cast was revealed in September, with additional casting through early 2023. Lee Sung Jin joined to rewrite the script by March 2023, one of several creatives who returned to work with Schreier from the Netflix series Beef (2023–present). Production was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes, causing some cast changes in early 2024. Calo joined by then for further rewrites. Filming took place from February to June 2024 at Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and also on location in Utah and Kuala Lumpur.Thunderbolts* premiered on April 22, 2025, at the Cineworld Leicester Square in London, England, and was released in the United States on May 2, as the final film of Phase Five of the MCU. The film received positive reviews from critics, and has grossed $160.4 million, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2025. The film's ending reveals that the asterisk in the title denotes The New Avengers, with the Thunderbolts team rebranded as the "New Avengers". Dave can't make it this week, so Megan and Evan review this week's very different films as a duo. First, Megan covers the Ami Canaan Mann's biopic AUDREY'S CHILDREN (2:32), which chronicles a period in the life of world-renowned children's doctor Dr. Audrey Evans (Natalie Dormer), as she works to revolutionize treatment of childhood cancer during the late 1960s and helps co-found the first Ronald McDonald House. Come for Natalie Dormer's excellent performance. Next, they discuss Jon Kasbe and Crystal Moselle's disappointing documentary MY ROBOT SOPHIA (17:41), which follows inventor David Hanson's attempts to build life-like AI. The film features a fascinating topic, but fails to delve deep enough into it to be worthwhile. Lastly, Evan reviews Jake Schreier's THUNDERBOLTS* (37:08) the latest Marvel film, which follows a ragtag group of anti-heroes led by Florence Pugh who must confront a powerful force: their traumas and darkest secrets. It's not your typical Marvel movie, and that's a very good thing because it has a lot of heart and soul. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the Coen Brothers' 1984 directorial debut, BLOOD SIMPLE!
"Thunderbolts*" marks a potentially major turning point within the MCU as it brings a group of anti-heroes together to face a new threat and forces them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. The marketing has been called out for its A24 style, with particular early positive reactions directed towards the cast and director Jake Schreier's more grounded approach to the filmmaking. Schreier and the film's Oscar-nominated composers, Ryan Lott, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ian Chang (otherwise known as "Son Lux"), were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is opening in theaters on May 2nd from Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Thank you, and enjoy!
