This presentation will help to clear up common misconceptions about marijuana, particularly among young people. As marijuana becomes legal in more states, it is easy for families to misinterpret this to mean that it is safe for their teens. This is not the case. Marijuana is more harmful to teens than adults, can increase the risk for progression to a more severe substance use problem, and can lead to withdrawal when stopped. This information is not getting conveyed enough to our youth in this era of growing cultural acceptance. Learning Objectives: Understand that marijuana is particularly harmful to the developing brain of a teen Learn why teens are more susceptible to a progression in their use by using marijuana Understand that withdrawal can be part of stopping marijuana use, contrary to popular belief Presenters: Matthew Quinn, MA, LCPC, CADC Matthew Quinn provides community relations for Rosecrance Health Network in the western suburbs of Chicago in Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Kendall counties. Joining me on this week’s episode is Matt Quinn, Community Relations Coordinator at Rosecrance, a substance abuse treatment center with locations throughout Illinois. Matt’s here to help me touch on a number of areas we haven’t really had an opportunity to discuss on the podcast just yet, mainly as it relates to marijuana and alcohol usage in teenagers. Topics we discuss include: — Substance abuse trends that have surprised him. What drugs has he seen decreases and increases in? — His biggest concern about teens and young adults using marijuana — Marijuana usage as it related to brain development in teens — Can marijuana be a long-term healing solution overcome anxiety, or does it only have short-term benefits? — Is Connection the opposite of Addiction? An interesting theory you’ll want to tune into…

You say you don't have a "problem" because you only drink at social gatherings. But is that just an excuse?A social alcoholic, or a social drinker is known as a low-risk drinker. You may not think that you have a problem and become defensive when your friends or family members begin to question your drinking habits. You're just a social drinker, after all, and there is really nothing to worry about. But what does that even mean?Of course you can go to a party and have a few drinks while being social; however, might you be having the same symptoms as an alcoholic but just in a social setting? Or are you saying that you're a social drinker to hide your true patterns of alcohol abuse?A true social drinker should be able to stop drinking without having any cravings, without wanting to suppress emotions, or without feeling like you have to sneak around to get a drink.Addiction expert at Rosecrance, Dr. Thomas Wright, MD, explains the differences between a social drinker and an alcoholic, as well as the signs to look out for if you or someone you know is a social alcoholic.
